The Great PEBL adventure part 10

  • Merry Christmas everyone! I've been wanting to do a detailed review video for you of my experiences in the PEBL so far, so I put some stuff together yesterday with my son Trevor who helped video. Overall I really like the PEBL and am glad I purchased it. It hasn't been without issues and as a brand new vehicle purchased from the manufacturer, I guess I would expect it to be more "refined" but I was an extremely early adopter, so I knew I might face some issues. On the bright side, I'm learning a lot about things I never knew before.
    I tried installing a wireless computer on the PEBL but wasn't able to get the thing to work at all. Not sure if it was an angle issue with the sensor and spoke magnet, or if the distance was too long or some other issue. I'm considering adding a wired one or possibly getting the fancy one that the ELF owners use which is plugged right into the electronics so its much more accurate and powered by the PEBL itself instead of batteries. I'll let you know as that proceeds.
    The 8-speed Sturmey Archer hub has been pretty good, but I typically have 1-3 gears that don't really work since adjusting it perfectly over the long cable run is challenging. Eventually I'll probably swap it out for a 5-speed hub or hopefully one of the new Bosch hubs or something more refined as more of this type of vehicle gets on the road around the world.

    Merry Christmas!! I think your assistant videographer is great. Thank you for the update. You always have valuable information. I plan to move when I retire but our hills are 2+ miles up to my home.
    The leaking info is important. I’m sure they will address that. If not, it’s something I will address when I can get mine. We seem to get our share of rain here in eastern PA. That was good advice about the fan & heater. I’m going to be getting mine late enough that I’ll take that into consideration. Do I really want to ride when it’s 10*? I’d probably like to try.
    Looking forward to your next vlog. You provide a great service.

      T&L's Nana I think 10 degrees would be no problem even without a heater. My wife got me these hot packs to put in my back pockets when it gets really cold. Wear winter gloves, and such. The biggest problem will be battery wear at that temp.

    Dear Eric,
    I have been enjoying your videos. I just moved to Colorado Springs, and my new job is about a 30 min ride from my place. I am looking at the PEBL or the ELF as a possible daily commuter. What version PEBL did you purchase? Looks like there are three models to choose from. The suspension looks cool, but I also don’t mind a rigid frame either. I currently ride a catrike 700 and I’m used to the rigid frame.
    Any who, I had a couple of questions.
    When you did your front wheel alignment, did you have the vehicle on the ground? Or did you lift the front end?
    Have you Tried the ELF? I was wondering if you have any opinions/comparisons. They both seem like awesome vehicles!
    Thanks and keep posting the videos,
    Sincerely,
    Danny

    A very cool way to commute or run to the shop. Clearly there are big advantages from having that roof. E bikes and motor bikes are vulnerable to rain and cold.. As for beating Big Oil..........priceless.

      I have a windshield and cover for my upright electric bike called a Veltop that protects me from the rain and cold weather.
      It's from France and only cost a few hundred USD.
      However you also need good long front fenders to protect your legs from getting wet from splash from the front wheel.
      It looks weird but it works

      beating big oil...hahahahahah..the whole Pebl is fiberglass, plastic, plexiglass, solar panel, rubber tires and
      highly processed 6061 Alum. Beating oil? What world do you live in....this Pebl ( and the Elf ) will never
      recover the oil investment that's in this little bike//car.
      Just think on this...you're being hyped. Think along the lines of recycyled bikes and power systems that use
      recoved materials.....then you can beat oil.

    Thanks for your reviews. One thing I couldn't find is what battery option you chose. I would have been interested in how the hill gearing would be with the smallest front chain ring. I am considering one for my partially handicapped sister so your brake comments were very important.

    • @EricFischnaller
      @EricFischnaller  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charles Brockway with the smallest front chainring, the motor quickly outpaces your pedaling rpm speed on the flats and since you must physically move the chain with your fingers it’s not something you’ll want to change often. It would however help for hill climbing.
      I have one of the 16 amp hour and one of the 32 amp hour batteries. Nice having two so I can switch off for better longevity

      Andrew, I'm actually just waiting on a sunny day so my videographer (son) doesn't get soaked while I take some video and give everyone a long-term update. Still really enjoying the PEBL and since I don't have a car, I really am enjoying not EVER buying gas, I don't even know what gas costs these days. I also am enjoying not ever worrying about traffic... since there really isn't any. The bike paths are getting more clogged with pedestrians that like to walk 3-abreast, so I've been taking the on-road paths lately both ways where before I'd take the bike paths in the AM, but it's not an issue. Still really nice. There are certainly a few things I'd like to see Better Bike change or add as options on upcoming models and I'll be making comments on those in the video. There are also a list of changes that they've implemented which I feel makes the PEBL a better.bike : P

    Season's greetings Eric. How about a 4000 mile road trip to see what this baby can do? Pedal down to Key West or to Yosemite? Would the extra battery and camping gear be too much for hills? Maybe a front derailleur would help.

    Hi. I enjoyed your post about the pebble. But I'm wondering when you purchase this model did you choose the highest available wattage of motor? I mean Florence just 60 miles to your West without too many local Hills but I'm a big guy.

    • @EricFischnaller
      @EricFischnaller  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Smyth the new ones have an on road switch which functions at 750 watt, and an off road switch that’s at 1500 watt. Many people are using the 1500 watt switch to hill climb.of course that will lessen your range. My PEBL has both the standard 16-amphr(25-mile) battery AND a 32-amphr (50-mile) battery. Personally with my experience with range of battery in relation to long hill climbs I wouldn’t try going the 60 mi to Florence without the 100mi range battery. I might give it a go if I weighed 50# less, but that extra weight plus the PEBL would not be advised. Plus the width of the PEBL on some of that hwy where little to no shoulder is present and blind corners, it’d be dangerous

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel - federal law limits these designs to a 750 watt motor. That wattage determination is a bench test average with no over heating when running 24 hours a day. The motor controller is required by that same law to limit top speed to 20 mph. In reality the motors can and do draw much more than 750 watts while climbing hills. My ELF hits 1,800 watts when starting up steep hills, I weigh 300 pounds but my ELF curb weight is 45 pounds less. The PEBL so-called 'off road' switch changes the settings on the motor controller to limits that are technically illegal on public roads, bike lanes or bike trails but so far I have heard of no legal challenges to offering that switch as a factory option.

      Robert Au if you’re talking about parking outside all night I wouldn’t recommend it. Even if you were to install u-bolts into the concrete, and Krypto lock to that at all 3 wheels, there’s no way to secure the cab. I could see it being vandalized or wheels removed and carried away. I’d recommend a storage shed at least to keep it out of the prying eyes of thieves. Plus heavy rains and winds will cause the seals to leak on the tailgate and windows so you may have electric problems long term

      Yes there are pedals AND electric. You'll use electric and pedaling to get started. I always pedaled along with using the throttle since the smaller 750 watt motor isn't really adequate to keep a vehicle like this moving fast without pedaling. Especially up a hill, you have to pedal if you have any hope of reaching the top.

    This is one of the reasons I had to drop the Pebl the motor just can not handle the wight of the body. If you stopped on a steeper grade you have a lot of difficulty getting it started. That would become too dangerous with traffic.

      @EricFischnaller  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VeloVloger I had a guy test ride today who lives in the South hills and found riding up hills very difficult. He’d probably need a PEBL with a 1500 watt motor but of course that’s a no go

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Velo - So you recant all those nasty things you said about the ELF and about me on the deleted Blue Monkey video? Look, I want better.bike to succeed but unless the federal law changes so they can use a higher wattage motor they are in trouble. The extra 40 pounds broke the camel's back. I predict a 1500 watt aftermarket kit will be developed by someone to power up the PEBL.

    • @EricFischnaller
      @EricFischnaller  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to say that the extra 40 pounds DEFINITELY didn't break the camel's back. I had a guy ride my PEBL yesterday that was at least 50 pounds less heavy than me, fit and ready to ride, but after trying to ride the PEBL up a hill, he decided it was a no go. He lives up a very steep hill in Eugene and wanted to know if he could take his two very small children with him out to school, grocery store etc. After trying it on the steep hill he decided he was going to have to find another solution.

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eric - that's a little confusing, your double negative implies the extra vehicle weight did not (?) make a difference but then you proceed to describe someone not being able to climb a hill to his satisfaction as can be done with the ELF with an adult passenger. 40 pounds is the weight of one kid and another penalty comes from the choice of motors used in the PEBL. I'm 65, multiple disabilities, 300 pounds and still climb the steepest hill in town with a load of groceries. My watt meter says I'm pulling 1400 to 1600 watts as I pedal in 6th gear at 12 mph. My ELF has about 12 pounds worth of useful upgrades too. BTW I'm having a 5 speed Sturmey Archer rear wheel built now, I think you are right about it working better with our shifting problems.

    • @glenswada
      @glenswada 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like the PEBL needs something like a bafang bbs01 or bbs02 electric motor which powers through pedals thus utilising gears for hills. The hubs are great for general riding but many lack lower speed torque.

    Eric - a contact of mine through Facebook owners group owns both a PEBL and an ELF. She modified the motor controller programming and claims it is a hill climbing beast now, faster than her ELF up hills and 23 mph on flat roads. I know you could be aware of this through your private owners forum but I have no access to that. What do you think? Worth pursuing? I am skeptical because it is not just about breaking laws but could burn out the motor during sustained loads.

    • @EricFischnaller
      @EricFischnaller  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Popeye Gordon that has been my concern. I don’t want to Damage the electrical systems or motor as I suspect it’d be expensive and a hassle to repair. Not unlike you I don’t have much call for hill climbing so I’m happy with mine as is

      @@stan.rarick8556 The Federal law states a 750 watt motor limit and 20 mph speed limit on all public roads and bike trails unless local laws change those limits. The PEBL is now sold with an "off road" switch for a 1500 watt power limit that is legal only on private roads and unpaved bike paths or logging roads. Turns out the actual curb weight is 205 pounds so they had to do something to stay in business. The ELF weighs 45 pounds less.

    I live in Melbourne, Australia, and I’m wanting a vehicle like this (time will tell which company actually launches here with a compliant 250W model) for my work commute, and shopping. I don’t have a bike because I know what I’m like. For 50% of the year, I’ll complain that it’s too hot and sunny to ride to work, because I’d end up sweaty and exhausted, and for the other 50%, I’d complain that it’s too rainy. A little enclosed cab ebike like this would rob me of that excuse not to ride.

      @@EricFischnaller The real stumbling block for me is that Australia adheres to an old version of the European Pedalec standard, meaning we’re limited to a 250W motor that can only be engaged while pedaling, and a maximum speed of 25 km/h, so even if I could afford to import one (base cost, cruel exchange rate, shipping, import duties), it’d have to be significantly modified to be road legal here.

      @@EricFischnaller I've seen a couple of videos, watched their Cycle Analysts, and for the majority of the ride the motor hangs around 100-200W load, but that's with a fair bit of pedaling. The ELF is somewhat lighter and 250W would perform better in it, but I guess I'll have to wait for the British Drycycle, or the Swedish Podride, both of which are designed for the European market where 250W is the standard.

      Yeah maybe 1500 if you're doing any real hill-climbing. What I'd like to see from a law standpoint would be a speed limiter of 19mph with no watt requirement. That would solve the problem because you could do more like 350 watt on an upright pedal cycle and on something like this 1500 or 2000 watts to have the torque to move the vehicle up a hill at 19mph still.

      Damian Vesik I think the reasoning for the lean in is for stability

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a common popular intentional design feature of the 'tadpole' trike. The wheel spokes are tensioned to be stable at that angle. The idea is that when you turn, the outside wheel gets more loading. The angle lets the wheel give a bit more traction with the stress closer to the center of the tire tread while turning. When going straight the leaning wheels are not noticed but you do need to rotate your tires every 800 miles to allow even tread wear.

    Without a front derailleur, if you can't add one yourself, you might want to consider getting a Rohloff 14 speed hub built into the rear wheel. It'll give you a wider gear range both on the lower end and the higher end. It would make climbing the big hills like this more of a breeze. The only drawback is Rohloff hubs are expensive...

    • @JaleelJohanson62
      @JaleelJohanson62 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes.... I actually saw that, but forgot about it when I posted above... If I recall, it looked expensive? The solution could also be as simple as replacing your middle sprocket with one that's a little smaller. That depends on how well what you have now works for you on the flat in the highest gear. I have a Tripod velomobile with a Bafang mid-drive so only have one sprocket in the front with an 8 speed derailleur in the back. With my gearing, I have plenty of low end, but can't easily assist the motor at speeds exceeding 20mph. In concept, it's similar to what you have in operation. Another option might be to lower the gearing of your mid-drive? I'm not familiar enough with it to know if that's actually possible? One thing is for certain... I am totally aware of the trade-off involved with only having one gear in the front. I'm considering the Rohloff hub myself because it gives the same effective range as a 27 speed gear train with no repeated gearing. Good luck solving your issue! It's definitely solvable. 750W is plenty to climb the hill in this video with the correct gearing.

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jaleel - Bikers talk about the Rolhoff but very few will shell out the money for them. My ELF has ruined two 8 speed Sram rear internal hubs which never shifted right due to the excessively long shift cable run that can not be properly calibrated. Same thing is happening with the Sturmey-Archer 8 speed hub on the PEBL, adjustments problems. The answer appears to be changing to a 5 speed hub which has enough indexing travel in the cable to work with longer cable runs so I'm have one built. You are incorrect about the motor wattage being sufficient, it is not. The PEBL design violated the rule about horsepower/weight ratio with their 195 pound curb weight. It may cost them their business in the end unless the federal law is changed to allow 1000 watt motors on heavier ebikes. We will know by the end of 2018.

    • @JaleelJohanson62
      @JaleelJohanson62 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Popeye - Someone who's willing to shell out in excess of $5000.00 for a velomobile or very high end recumbent trike is exactly the kind of person who'd consider a Rohloff hub if it would solve a gear range problem. That's why I thought it appropriate to throw the suggestion out there. That said, I went back and re-watched Eric's Part 3 video and I really think the solution he outlines with the shiftable planetary geared front sprocket is probably the best way for him to go. Not as expensive as I thought it would be either... I think if Eric moved the chain in the front to the lowest gearing and tried this hill he'd know if he's got enough power to climb it. I live on the top of a mountain with steeper hills than this and have a Bafang 750W motor running through an 8 speed derailleur in the back powering my Tripod velomobile. I climb the hills with ease in the lowest gear. The PEBL is on the HEAVY side though when it comes to velomobiles... No denying that...

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the 195 pound curb weight combined with a less than ideal motor selection is a bad combo. Most any vehicle like these will of course work harder when carrying a passenger in the rear, regardless of what gearing is used to add the human power which is simply not sufficient for vehicle weight and load. The real solution is a 1000 watt motor but of course that will not conform to federal ebike laws.
      I'm retired on SS so an outlay like the cost of a Rolhoff, an import at that, is not practical. If it was US made, maybe. I'm trying to save up for the cost of a replacement vehicle should my ELF be wrecked or stolen, it is all I've got and insurance is out of the question.

      What an ignorant and innumerate comment. 1200 of these have been sold with payment in full in advance. You don't even know that those bullet shaped high speed velomobiles cost between 8 and 11 thousand dollars with no e-assist, cargo and passenger capacity. The materials alone costs $3000 for the factory. The PEBL or ELF is also far cheaper than a car to own. Let's look at the numbers to see. Lay out 10K for a new PEBL delivered, or a nice 4 year old used car. The similarity ends there. What follows in the next ten years of ownership costs is dramatically different! Mandatory insurance, license, fuel, engine maintenance and all the rest will cost you $30,000 every ten years. In those same ten years the PEBL will cost you $3000 for typical bike maintenance at $25/hr and two battery replacements. That's a $27,000 difference you can count on because the ELF has no $5000 motor or $3000 transmission to blow up. A bonus is the fitness you can maintain as you pedal the ELF at your desired pace, no gym membership needed. Another bonus is you get to stop causing co2 emissions - that helps everyone. My ELF collects 100% of my daily transportation energy needs with the 100 watt PV roof panel. Solar is fantastically good for the environment and all full explorations of total input vs. output prove it.
