Given that the triumph 400 won't see British shores till December, and that by then I'm sure enfield will have launched the new Himalayan 450 liquid cooled, so that will be a direct competition for the triumph 400 scrambler I'd say

Over here in Taiwan both CB350 are saleing like hot cake, flying off dealer lot, mostly because of the low price, and they do look pretty cool
And our unique right of way here limmilt all motorcycle to local road so the 20 something horse power is more than enough for local roads and urban riding
But if you are in UK where bike are allow on highway, I think you may find the 350s a tiny bit under power when riding highway speeds

The new 400 seems on par with the KTM 390, but with decent modern classic looks. The 400X I'm most excited about as a weekday commuter, with actual ability for weekends off road. I'd love an XE variant with some even longer stroke suspension, higher ground clearance, and spoked wheels (please Triumph!)... even so the standard 400X should hit the sweet spot for many. The new RE 450 Himalayan could be stiff competition for it though, especially if it maintains RE's typically aggressive pricing.

Great review Motobob. I think the scram looks wise is up there and for the price. The trident seems a similar sizing and also comparable to the Benelli offerings in sizing for smaller bikes like the Benelli Leoncino 500 scrambler and 800 scrambler that are also lovely bikes. The only discernible factor for me buying these bikes is the dealership network in the United Kingdom and the people willing to work on them which puts the likes of triumph at the top but the prices are also fairly high in comparison to the models I mentioned. I forgot to mention another Italian bike the Cabalerro fabric scrambler 125 and 500 which are beautiful looking machines and FM moto
And motoguzzi bigger 650 scramblers. I am not a fan of the 400 Harley rear end scambler fendering 😆

i think enfield will enjoy the cult following factor, especially in big markets like India where people know their history, and you will definitely see meteor 350 and classic 350 on the top of the sales chart, even when baby harley and these triumphs are on the way. honda and jawa has already tried to challenge enfield in small size retro neo segment, but they have failed. and most important that how enfield gives a perfect soul to the bike, their bikes delievers the exact feel that a classic rider need. I am actually exited so see how the harley 440 is made. If they are successful to give the same experience as enfied and of course price then i think it could steal some sales from royal enfield's sales chart

I bought a Scram as a training bike. I'm doing DAS training with students on MT07s. I have no problem keeping pace with these bikes out on the dual carriageway. You just hold onto the gears a bit longer. Off road it's agile, stable and easy to ride - it's certainly well beyond my level of competence. Where Enfield cuts the costs is in the peripherals, so you just have to accept that you will be upgrading things like chains, brake pads and so on. The tyres are just fine, despite being budget, so I'll wear them out before changing them.
On the Triumphs, I agree with Stuart Fillingham here - the Enfields are not really the competition as they are very different machines with different characteristics and price range. Overall, I suspect that the Triumphs despite being pitched at the Asian market will do better in places like Europe.

Worse yet, this bike {in the States} is going to $7000 out the door - laughable for a "starter 400cc bike". RE's are getting $1000 tacked onto list price here, they're effectively six grand.

The best bang for buck and tech is the Svartpillen 401. PERIOD.
You keep forgetting the Svartpillin/Vitpilliin 401 has the same adjustable forks as the 390 ADV but it's price is around or below the Duke 390 in certain markets! (you are getting KTM 390 ADV for price below a Duke 390!) It's also even got quickshifter/autoblipper as stock which is not even a aftermarket option in on the Duke 390 any other market other than India, Spoke wheels also come standard which is a must if you actually plan on going off-road. Not to mention Duke/Vit/Svart are actually 44HP.. not 40hp.. This video is very biased and don't give all the facts like your last hype video for the Triumph's where you forgot the Trident 660's even exist..You also don't mention BMW G310R are made in INDIA but with the expensive BMW servicing costs! probably by same company that builds the Dukes/Svarts/Triumphs.
    DO BETTER!

There is nothing Triumph in these models
KTM Engine is for speed addicts (good upgrade for Pulsar fans)
Bajaj is plonking same engine into Dominar, KTM Duke, KTM Adv, Husqvarna Svartpilen & Husqvarna Vitpilen
    Nothing Unique just cosmetics
Shame on Triumph & Bajaj for selling DOMINAR in new clothes

Hi Motobob - love the videos but you’re wrong on the main competition for the scrambler, It’s the Fantic Caballero 500! (Enfield yes but not the KTM or BMW, they are small adv bikes not scramblers.
Please check out the Fantic Caballero 500 Scrambler, Rally or Explorer - A great looking bike with, heritage, ability and very similar specs and price point to the Triumph Scrambler. The Fantic Scrambler is probably most similar (Although I prefer Rally/Explorer as they more dirt capable with fully adjustable suspension and I think better clearance?) - Please do a comparison of these as they are top of my list at the moment! (Also the Mash 500 Scrambler if you want more value but less reputation?) Thanks !

As an entry level buyer I was set on getting a triumph bike. I actually hands down committed to a 2023 model and excited becoming part of the triumph family but decided to wait for the 2024 models.
    Not after this stunt…
If I wanted an Indian made bike, for the Indian and far east markets, I would buy an Indian made bike!!!!!
Triumph, You can put the largest Triumph Emblem you can and want to get on… It’s still an Indian bike!
Very shady. I Rather spend more money on a “true“ English, Japanese, or Italian entry-level bike and get a bike with a true identity than a fake identity.

Guess what Harley and Triumphs announced their Indian pricing for both bikes and it's gonna be one hell of a dual for the foreign beauts to conquer Indian roads...HD comes in at 2188 pounds and Trimph at 2130 pounds ...but the word is that the triumph engine does resemble a lot to the 390cc power plant that Bajaj-KTM already produces....but Harley's insane 38nm of torque is mind boggling..its good to see 2 pinnacle motorcycling brands famous for their twins and other engines..trickling down to the basic single cylinder...but with some fun factor indeed

Speed 400's, hunter 350, CB350's, Ktm390's, Bmw310's, scram411 all are either Indian brand or made in India and exported CL500 is a exception

I had a 390 Duke. Ktm had to buy it back because the paint started coming off the frame. I also had a 790 Duke. The dealership said my bike was the worst bike they have ever seen. It just fell apart from blown transmission, 3 instrument gauges, oil leaks, quick shifter, clutch etc. KTM is a awful company to work with. I just put a deposit on a Triumph 400X.

The Enfields are fare to heavy and lack torque and power. At the moment in Australia you can get 2022 Duke 390 for $ 7000 aust dollars on the road brand new. It's really is a scrambler and has heaps of torque and power and is around 160 K wet W weight and is really well made and a joy to ride. Great city suburb bike and handles the freeway with ease with plenty of speed to spare. It's the best value bike in Australia. Yes I own one. You probably need to be about 5ft-10inch tall because it's pretty high in the saddle. Of course if you can afford the triumph it's probably excellent but you will pay over ten grand Aus and I dought it will out perform the Duke 390 by much if any at all.

The Triumph 400x looks like a cool bike for sure and can do some light offroading but lacks the suspension travel and ground clearance compared to a scram 411 or a Himalayan. Most of these "scrambler" bikes are just street bikes mascurading as true offroad bikes. The Scram 411 is the only bike l know of that is actually derived from an offroad ADV platform all the rest are just street bikes. That being said l would buy both the Scram 411 and the 400x if l had the cash.

I’d love to see a pic of all the competitors side by side with stats under each one including the other offerings in the 4-6 thousand category , RE interceptors would be included and folks they’re 650’s . ❤ personally I love retro looks so it limits the ones I’d buy to Honda , RE and Triumph I reckon .❤

I have the Duke 390 and it's a excellent bike. You need to be reasonably tall however because of the seat height. The scartpilen 401 is nearly the same as the Duke in performance but personally I prefer the look of the Duke.

Autotrader seem to have the scrambler estimated at £6k
As good as it looks I'm taking the scam if that's the case.
The cl500 is also 6k so I think it's about right.
But just a bit rich for me.
I know you can't compare new and used but I'd rather pick up a very low mileage scram and save over 2k.

why do they always use 65kg rides that are 165 cm tall? They should use a genuine rider that goes 2/week at McDonald's, KFC etc
Every time I go to the dealer, I am surprised how small those bike are in reality and make me look like an elephant on tiny tiny tricycle :)))
