Hello everyone, I bought myself a Speed 400. I ordered it back in January without even trying a test drive, although I was very skeptical about this model, telling myself it was "nothing special." Within two days, I rode more than 400km and can now say what I personally like and what I don't. The engine is impressive in city traffic, the front brakes are very good. The chassis is also very good. The assembly quality is excellent. On the downside, it's hard to read the engine revs on the instrument panel, but such power may not be essential for a motorcycle. The first gear is especially short, and if you're riding at low speeds in the first three gears, you feel some jerking. I haven't gone over 100km/h, but from the engine sound, it feels like it's the most comfortable ride, though it can go much faster, but the engine starts to strain. Overall, it's a very good motorcycle, and I don't regret buying it at all.
Thanks for the feedback. Any heating issue in this bike? I heard the fan kicks in very fast and lot of heat is there? Is this happening to your bike as well? TIA
I got one a month ago. It is my first bike, and other than license lessons and some test drives I havent got much experience so I dont know what is inherent to all bikes or only this one I dont use first gear much, most uphill starts can confortably be done in second (even quite steep ones, Im between 65-70kg so that might help.) I assume its for if you have someone riding on the back. The jerk at low speeds is real (like a stuttering of the engine). Fastest Ive gone is 150 kmh once (cause I havent done the first 2000km yet) and bike still felt like it had more to give (although not much more). I live in a rather warm (by european standarts) country and only now that temps have dropped I have stopped hearing the radiator fan. (it will start quite quickly in repeated start/situations) but generally speaking its not particularly hot on the bike
Thank you for not using the condescending term ‘beginner bike’ as most reviewers do for anything under 800cc. I’ve been riding for decades and really fancy getting this bike. It seems a hoot.
Totally agree! Especially here in the states, not only do people look down on a lower capacity engine but anything that's not a Harley lol. I happen to own a Low Rider ST and commute on it every single day, but I'm looking at this bike and the Scrambler 400 as possible secondary bikes for bad weather days and just to have some fun. Great looking bikes for the price
Finally someone agrees. "Beginner bike" phrase gets used I think because particularly men think a smaller bike = smaller peepee. They always want bigger and louder. This is why I don't go to showrooms as I'd be asking for small and the quietest bikes, not bigger and louder.
I agree as well, recently went from the 690 enduro to a 300l and now considering downsizing from my f800gs to something smaller, like a 500cc, so as they say what goes up most come down.
Exactly! Ive been riding for about 12 years and I just love small bore bikes. Between the price and the fact that Im mostly in town they just make sense. I will always prefer to ride a slow bike fast vs having to 1/4 throttle because Im in traffic or on inner city streets. What I love are the people that say, These arent make for the American market. Do you know how big the US is???? Do you know how many different conditions there are???? To me it sounds like people that are just trying to justify their overpriced purchase.
I'm just under 6.2 and I tried the 400x and liked it but it just didn't feel right,,,, as soon as I rode the speed it felt instantly better all round. I've placed an order and hopefully arrives in May. Don't let your height put you off trying the speed. Roll on May
I'm 6'2 and preordered the scrambler, but I ended up switching to the Speed as the better handling won me over and I will be doing 99% on-road riding 🙂 Did a 3-hour roundtrip today with no issues or need to stretch.
I’m an old experienced biker and tried both of them. They’re both great but for me the Speed was the pick of the two and suits the sort of riding I do. I’m 5’10”. I liked it so much I traded in my Bonneville T120 - I don’t need the power and I certainly don’t need the extra 60kg weight anymore.
I’ve had my speed 400 for 2 months now and I have used it for all types of roads including spaghetti junction and the M6 and it’s been flawless , a fantastic bike and rather than red I have the best colour Blue 😉
Took the Speed 400 for a test ride and couldn’t get off it, did everything perfectly… even up to the ‘ton’… I’ve owned over fifty motorcycles over my lifetime and this wee Triumph ticks all the boxes, and I have a new red Speed 400 arriving next week..❣️
I've just bought a Speed and love it. Did a hundred mile ride first time out and it didn't tire me in any way. Looking forward to some decent weather now!
SO much to say about this! (though annoyingly I see I’m near the 200th comment already so you might not see it!) I bought the 400x (yes in the green sway). I own the Street (aka Speed now) Twin 900 too. Firstly let me explain my reasons for getting the 400 X . I’m freakishly tall…at 176cm…yes Rob..a whole ONE centimetre taller than you (I remember towering over you at the bar at that promo event at Bike Shed a few years back 😂)… So in actual fact, you’re totally correct…you need to be 180cm + (5’11) to really be able to chuck it round in the way you should.. I currently live on a hill with the bike parked on the narrow road outside with a steep camber on it so setting off and returning is always a heart in the mouth moment for me and probably somewhat entertaining for anyone looking out the window … So why did I get it? Three reasons covering practicality, aesthetics and ego.. 1. I live on the south coast in Sussex with roads so potholed they make the moon look like a millpond so the suspension and higher Clearance along with the handling great for soaking these up. 2. It looks the nuts…. 3. I like many men am not as tall as I would like to be (180cm would be ideal but without a mediaeval torture rack, it’s not gonna happen). I think perhaps that in my sad little head by owning the X I somehow feel taller… despite the clear evidence to the contrary illustrated by the comical display of me trying to put it on its side stand while I’m on a hill… And I know there are a lot of blokes of my height and smaller and owners of monsters such as the GS that know exactly what I’m talking about…. Now…. that final twist of the knife comment about the 900.! Et tu Brute? 😂 Stumbling across your just-posted video on your street twin 900 way back when, was a large factor in me purchasing mine!!! I don’t regret it for a moment, absolutely love that Bike and when we finally move into the forever home next month and I get the Garage I’ve been waiting on for three years I will be adding all the delicious modifications I have ready for it! This is basically to make it like the speed 400 you’ve just recommended above somewhat ironically!!! Obviously that wasn’t available at the time otherwise I think I probably would have bought it. However, hopefully what I’m going to end up with here is one bike that makes me feel tall and is good for the country roads around here and another Bike I can Wrench on and get to be my own individual more powerful vision of the one above. Thanks as always, mate. ✊🏼
I am 75 and on the Facebook Speed/Scrambler 400 page I have noticed that there are an incredible number of older riders getting back into motorcycling with one or the other of the bikes. So far the oldest I have found is 85! The basic theme of easy to move around and hold up on hills seems to reoccur all the time.
As a taller rider, it seems that the Scrambler is for me. But I'm a road rider, so my first set of replacement tyres would be road tyres. And I'd fit a Pyramid Plastics 'Fenda Extenda' to keep the radiator as clean as possible. Having said that, I'm not in the market for another bike, but a big thumbs up to Triumph & Bajaj for a great looking bike.
Hello. I have purchased a Speed 400 and now done 475 miles on it. I test rode a number of smaller capacity bikes including the Scrambler 400x and the Speed 400 was the one for all the reasons Motobob describes and more. Thanks
Hi Bob, as someone who has also tested both versions, i`ve ordered the Speed 400. The Scrambler is excellent, comfortable and stable, BUT, i found the extra seat height slightly worrying when i`m used to having both feet flat on the floor, with a bend at the knee. Sitting on the scrambler, i could`nt get both feet flat on the floor, and when stopping at a roundabout, that initial "where`s the ground" feeling was a bit scary, albeit for a second or 2, and i`m sure, when you`ve ridden the bike a few times, you`d soon adapt to it. Also, i found the Scrambler brakes not as good, with good initial bite, but very little in reserve, but again, i think you would soon adapt to it. But for me, for my style of riding, and my local riding area, the Speed 400 is more nimble and flickable, through tight and twisty Dorset back lanes, along with the New Forest. I`ve been googling Speed 400 accessories, and have already found a belly pan, and tail tidy. The one thing i would like which is not on the standard bike, is span adjustable levers, i think for an extra £100 on the price, they could be standard equipment.
I took test rides recently and my friends from office have both. Personally the only reason I prefer Scrambler is due to the riding position. The stance of Speed is neither upright nor aggressive, it's just somewhere in between. I am 5'9, the bike feels good for my height while sitting, but my hands are always bent awkwardly. Maybe I have slightly longer arms but it just doesn't feel quite right. Scrambler on the other hand is just perfect. Both bikes felt pretty easy to handle, not intimidating at all.
@@jvl4832 I have really enjoyed the bike it gives me a smile each time I look at or ride it. Haven’t had any problems hit the button and away we go. The mirrors start vibrating at 70 mph making it a bit fuzzy to really focus on what’s behind you can still see it but it’s out of focus. It’s been comfortable enough on rides of a couple of hours. Tyres are good allowing you to throw the bike into the corners really good fun,and it sips the petrol allowing a good distance between fill ups. I fitted an aftermarket radiator cover as none come as standard with the speed ,also had triumph lower engine bars fitted they are Nice and neat offering some protection for engine covers. And Just yesterday received the new Tec adjustable brake and clutch leavers for the 400 . The other ones being sold are for a ktm and set the clutch lever further away from your hand but Tec has had correct new ones made to put it at the correct distance. All in all I am very happy with the bike .
I preferred the scrambler taking delivery in 3 days I'm 5 8 so tip toeing but it is much more practical, speed is good but scrambler is much more comfortable for a single bike garage. Cruising, commuting, A roads B roads C roads can do it all plus some rough and rocky patches too. A common scene in India
@@whiterose5083 it will be tall. As I am tiptoeing on both side so you will have to tiptoe from side to side And considering the weight it is better to go for speed, but try the scrambler once.
I test rode the Street 400 and didn't like it at all... it felt like a 250... also, I didn't like having to look down at the speedometer and altering my helmet to see it. A week later, I test rode the Scrambler 400, and bought one. I couldn't believe the difference. If it's the same engine, does the frame and bike height really make that much difference? The Scrambler seemed much more like a 400. I also have a Svartpilen 401, which in my opinion is the perfect urban bike (I live in Bath, so both of these bikes are perfect for the street/green combo). The seat height and the front tire size of the Scrambler 400 are my only (very small) complaints, because of my 5'9" height.
Bang on the buck. The speed 400 is perfect for daily commuters. At the price point it makes a sensibly buy with loads of features and Triumph DNA. Loved It, Owned it Riding & Enjoying it.
Can you get 17in knobbies? Most people dont go fast enough off-road to require all that suspension, or they use a proper duel sport. The 9kg weight saving helps too.
Finally received my 400x in the states about a week ago and I am loving it. You can't go wrong with either of these bikes. Handles very well and is just a fun bike to ride...even though it's still in the break in period. I do feel like the brakes could use a little more stopping power so the Speed may be better off there. I'm sure the seat is nicer as well. Scrambler's is a little stiff and very "slidey"/smooth.
On bikes like these, I don't think it's your height. It's your inseam actually it's always your inseam. I'm 5'10 or at least I used to be and I have a 29 inch inseam. I bought the speed 400. I've had it for 2 weeks now and absolutely love it! I can flat foot. It very comfortable fun to throw around in the corners. It is an excellent motorcycle. You're not going to get anything better for the money. Just thought I'd throw in my two cents. Thanks for the video 🙂
Regarding the difference in braking performance, I’m assuming the braking on the scram version is softer for when riding off road, I have read that if you just swap the pads out of the scram to the same as in the speed then the braking improves as it’s down to the material of the pads
Test rode both and found that though the speed 400 is the more fun on road there isn't enough road left to enjoy it. The 400X light off-road ability is just right for our Edinburgh roads so would be my choice.
A week ago I went to a dealer to check out riding positions for the Morini Seiemmezzo STR and SCR. I didn't ride them, but although I think the SCR looks better, I found myself wanting the STR for the same reasons you mentioned above. Plus I feel the riding position on the STR would allow me to load the front better on fast riding around corners, and manage the weight better on slow speeds (it is a heavy bike. I am 1.82cm so both bikes were ok). Couple days ago I decided to go for the STR and your video confirms my thoughts are valid.
Drove both. At 6’2” The scrambler felt more like at street bike with dirt bike clip ons for the street. It seemed confused on what it was. The speed was a fun little bike. A great first bike or city bike. Just not an American highway speed bike.
I have a 37 inch inseam so, I'm leaning towards to the scrambler. Can flat foot both no problem but the scrambler seemed to have a little more room between the seat and pegs. I don't know if that was just in my head though.
@@leeinwis have a test ride and take some pictures while you are riding or standing still for Better understanding of it's riding difficulty for your height and how it looks according to height/size of this bike as compared to you.
I've been debaing between the Speed 400 and the Speed Twin 900 for quite a while. I think I am going for the Speed 400. By the time i pay all the fees and equipment I want the Speed 400 ut will cost me about $6600 here in the states. The Speed Twin 900 would cost me about $12,500. That's just about twice the money. I may be a tightwad, but is the Speed Twin 900 twice the bike? Is it twice the fun? I think not, so I choose the Speed 400. Just as soon as I sell my Slingshot I'm going to my nearest Triumph dealer to buy a Speed 400. Thanks for the video.
I'm in Australia and just (April 2024) bought the Speed 400 as my get around bike to get me too/from work. Im 6ft, ridden bigger bikes, GTR1400, GSX750(2), and this bike so far appears to tick all of the boxes to do the 200km round trip and Queenscliff/Sorento ferry journey I have to do once a week. About the only concern I do have and it was touched on in the video are the accessories. I bought the bike with the intention to install the Topbox to allow me to store my work gear, but Ive been told by Truimph that the Topbox may not be available until July/August of this year (2024), so i'm having to wear a bag on my back, and do the ride with my work gear. Whilst this isn't optimal, I'll accept this as a small concern with what appears so far to be a great little bike.
Same! I bought the Speed in Feb and ordered the rack & top box but still waiting for it - probably til July as you said, I guess. And so, like you, I just use a little backpack. Ok for now. But yes, I'm really enjoying this bike. So easy to ride and comfortable, for me and my wife as a pillion.
I've just bought a Honda CB300R mainly because it is lighter, being £450 cheaper than the Speed 400 was also a factor. I think I've made the right choice for me.
@@chrishart8548 I wouldn't call 9hp a big difference (Honda 31bhp 286cc), from the videos I've seen of them side by side accleration wise there's nothing in it, but I'm not bothered. 27kg lighter whilst not a lot in the grand scheme of things was a factor for me, I prefer lighter small capacity bikes.
@@chrishart8548 It should not be that much of a difference, since both are thumper design. But for not much more, I bough SV650, which trust me, is a proper bike in comparison, with legendary Suzi reliability and V2 sound.
@@stormtrooper9404 I saw a T reg 1999 sv650 the naked version. I love the design with the thick round frame running underneath the petrol tank. Think they were only £4,195 around that time. What a bike. The styling was almost steam punk with the modern frame and round headlight.
I saw one channel not recommend either because there’s no aftermarket parts. I was comparing the Speed (my preference) to the new Honda SCL500. What’s the opinion of the Speed on the highway?
So I have a question for you. I am 6 ft 2 inches and I want a speed 400. Is it uncomfortable to sit on being that tall? Is it crammed to sit on for more than 30 to 40 minutes??
@@Legodude07Hello! I don't think it would be uncomfortable for you! However, it might look small under your frame. You should also check-out the Scrambler 400x.

@@somprakash_behera right, thanks for your input. I appreciate it very much. Money is a little tight for me right now. An extra 5 to 6 hundred dollars is a little much for me right now. I know the scrambler is a little more dirt oriented, or maybe gravel oriented. Does that mean the transmission gearing is a little shorter and doesn't have a high top speed or am I wrong with that. Anyways, thanks again for the input
@@Legodude07 The Scrambler 400x is not a proper dirt bike. Yes, the characteristics may slight differ than that of the Speed. I feel the Speed 400 is a great package if you mostly ride bike on tarmac, it is really confident inspiring around corners, brakes are also nice and also good for doing some casual offroading. Why don't you get a testride of the bikes and make a decision!
Tried the 400 scrambler a month and a half ago and I liked it a lot. However, I am 5" 7, and I think that the Speed might be the best choice. The price difference is substantial too. Less seat hight, less weight, less price...
I’ve just taken delivery of a Scrambler, which I am delighted with. I’m also only 5’9”, but I do have a 32” inside leg, so can flat-foot it no problem.
I love both of these bikes and appreciate this review! I know you've also raved about the Trident 660 which does seem like an excellent bike, but for "smallish" in town bike, maybe the speed 400 even better buy than the Trident, thoughts?
I would live to see a twin clocks on the speed 400! Or at least digital speedometer and analog rev counter. Plus who ever will come up woth a cafe racer half fairing like the one on the Thruxton for this bike will get my money with a little raised clip on conversation. TRIUMPH should make a one make junior race series.
Well, you're in luck. Triumph - Bajaj are already testing a variant with a half fairing, something along the lines of the Speed 1200 RR. The name Thruxton 400 is being touted a lot, but given the striking resemblance, I would expect it to be named as the Speed 400 RR. Expected to be launched soon.
Great little bike. I'd love to see someone put some Pirelli MT60 RS tyres on it, and see how it went. Only negative for me were the foot pegs were too close to the rear foot pegs, as I kept hitting them.
Like the Speed version. I'm also 5'9" with a 30" leg. So the scrambler is too high a seat for me. So many bikes these days have too high a seat height for me to consider buying.
It's kind of crazy considering you're average height and still a lot of bikes are too tall. I have same measurements. Got a 6ft body and 5'5 legs fused together lol It is annoying. Most mountain bikes(bicycle ) now come stock with 29" wheels and I had to buy 27.5" wheels to swap out when I bought my mountain bike just so I could reach ground with bith feet. I really love the look and ability of the Scrambler but if it's too tall it kind of kills it for me. Maybe can get some kind of bike boot with a 1" lift in them or something. I want it for a short commute to work and then to be able to take it up some rough dirt roads to the mountain lakes around my town.
I tested both and for me the ergonomics of the scrambler made pick that one. On the speed i had back pain after 20min. Now riding the scrambler for 6 months goin on 7000km, doin ride of over 600km a day I know I picked the wright one. Never had any real problems with my back. Happy with my choice!
I currently use the RE Hunter which is a 350 and want to upgrade. The upgrade will be below a 500cc, less than 900 mm n below 200 kgs. Would like to see a comparison btwn the Speed 400 and RE Guerrilla 450!
Svartpilen is great but too bad its within the KTM group that unfortunately has horrible factory warranty support. Triumph reliability, fit and finish are outstanding. My Tiger 900 and T120 Bonnie have been superb. The 400 Scrambler might be next to join the herd.
@@chrisvonkleist3984Well Bajaj is known to make good quality bikes & they did good work on both of these models! They are producing them in India & concurrently helping Thailand & Brazil to make these models too, with all the QA & QC process as well!
The X is aprox 40mm higher. Of those, 30 are wheel radius, and 10 or 15 the suspension (150 vs 140). So, basically the same bike, the X a little better for off. But not much, it is more a matter of looks and the height of the rider. As you say, below 6 ft rider, the Speed. None will do any serious off-road. Both can green lane. I’d take the Speed. Great video!❤
I like the speed over the scrambler , and reference extras lots of firms are doing them now and instead of oem items I priced them up and their up to 20% cheaper , I’ve got a triumph tiger 660 sport and got a motech pro tank bag , saw it with the triumph logo in my local dealers £50 more ridiculous, shop around 😊👍👍
I ride a 23 Honda CB300R and I think it's a great bike. Really smooth between 40 and 60 mph, I do like the look of this though, what puts me off buying is the possible reliability, are they reliable?
Really good comparison. I definitely prefer the looks of the X but it's probably too tall for me. If I downsize from my T100 the Speed would be a serious contender.
I'm 5' 8", and I chose the scrambler for its dirt road capabilities. I wanted it for riding Back Country Discovery Routes. As for touching the ground, the seat height on most adventure bikes is worse than the 400x. In conclusion, the Speed is great if you don't ride on dirt. Maybe someday I'll own both.
I have ridden 90 miles of the dirt and gravel roads of the Seven Mountains portion of the PA BDR with my wife as a passenger. The tires worked fine for that.
MotoBob - any new "news" on a release date for a Thruxton 400? I think I really need that bike! btw, did you notice that the 400 Triumphs are the only Triumphs that you turn the rear seat release clock wise to release?!
In India, where general road speed is less and patchy / under-construction sections occasionally, the Scrambler can be a touring motorcycle, if only the tank was larger.
In the end you touched on a good question for every review and reviewer. When finished with your testing, do you find yourself wanting to continue riding it?
I dig your reviews man. I'm shooting for the Speed 400, my first MC coming from the scooter world. Currently on a BV 400 that would be hard to give up as she does just about anything in super comfort. Cheers from California 🤙🤙
Curious. Would you consider buying the Himalayan 450 over the Scrambler? What’s your take on the Himmy? Thanks. Personally, (at 162 cms) I picked the Scram 400 over the Speed and don’t regret it. Experienced enough with heavier tall ADVs and much prefer the ergos of the Scram. I think the Speed’s main advantage is not the seat height but the better top end and braking. Just feels better at highway speeds (the Speed).
I’d say Triumph/Bajaj have made two really (really) handsome Bikes for anyone who doesn’t do a lot of motorway. Pretty little things with a good badge and a great price. Me? I’d go for the bigger green one.
I went to a semi local dealer yesterday. The premise was to sign up for a new Himalayan for when the arrive in the USA. I reviewed the inventory in the massive showroom and began checking a few prices. There were several old mod model Himalayans and other Royal Enfields but no new ones. So I checked out a Triumph Speed 400 and a Scrambler. The price of $4995.00 USD for the Speed 400 was great. Until the dealer addons were calculated. A total of $7400USD before taxes and licensing. Crazy. So without speaking to anyone i looked some more and there were a couple hundred new bikes on the floor some with even more but no less. I will say the frame of the Triumph appears very strong and the fit and finish is really good. I would like to have a scrambler. But the dealer. I'm sure they won't be there this time next year. Maybe a BMW GS310 for me. I have a great dealer that isn't crazy or a thief.
Tell me im not alone in this opinion. The Scramblers Brown two part seat and the colorway paired with the Speed 400’s makeup would be the perfect bike for me.
Out of these 2 , I'd have the Speed 400. I don't go off road . All the 19 inch wheeled "X" / off road type bikes I've ridden , well the steering always seems vague as compared to lower down , and 17 inch wheeled road focused bikes. Speed / Street 900 must still be dishing out huge more dollops of torque, and peak BHP , so there must be quite a difference still. I've gotta get a test ride on a Speed 400. Doubt I'd get one, my Speed 1200 still keeps me happy after 5 years ! Now getting another striple again, that could appeal, but I keep looking at Tracer 9 GTs ...
Do you know if the 2025 model year will have taller 1st and 2nd gears so that you don't have to row thru them in the first 5 seconds out from a green light?
Hey Bob, greetings from New Delhi, India. I'm exactly your height and I too picked up a Speed 400 over the Scramler. Just back from a 3000km/5day trip, the only 'sore' point I have with the bike is the seat. It isn't half as comfortable as my Meteor 350 with RE touring seats. Performance wise, this leaves the RE standing. Contemplating a NX500 next...wise?
Comparing them with the pricing isn't 100% valid Because the X starts at 5.595 but it comes with kneed pads, radiator guard, the headlight grill and the handguards and the handlebar pad and the last two aren't an option for the Speed. Now the speed starts at 4.995 but if you add the 3 accesories that come as standard on the X the price goes to 5.175 wich is still a little cheaper. But its not like the triumph made the X a little higher on price for no reason.
I own a 23 R1250 GSA and just put a deposit on a Speed 400. I want a small cc bike to ride around town that is light and nimble. I will use the GSA for long haul freeway riding and the Speed 400 for city riding.
I sat on both and being a shorter rider (29 inch inside sesam) the speed was better for feet down but ...I like the looks of the 400x better, am still to decide...and then there is the RE Himalayan and CF Moto 450MT coming along!
This video makes me want one even more! But damn, in my country Speed 400 costs close to 8000$ which is crazy! XSR700 costs around 10000$, would you recommend XSR with CP2 engine over Speed?

Totally agree! Especially here in the states, not only do people look down on a lower capacity engine but anything that's not a Harley lol. I happen to own a Low Rider ST and commute on it every single day, but I'm looking at this bike and the Scrambler 400 as possible secondary bikes for bad weather days and just to have some fun. Great looking bikes for the price
Yeah, I cringe on beginner bike statements. My last three bikes were 150, 350 and 200. I still keep my 1200 for long distance touring at high speed.
Roll on May
Congratulations brother
Did it arrive?
Im also 6.2, been contemplating whether to get the speed or the scrambler for a while now.
I'm so on the verge of buying the Speed. It looks like so much bike for the money. It looks like smiles per mile.
Go test ride it. I think you'll fall in love with the speed 🙂 happy riding.
I am going with scrambler😂
@@manoj1350 That's what I love about motorcycling, no wrong answers.
Speed doesn't have road presence.
Go ahead with the purchase, I've had it for the past 8 months now, done 10k kms. Absolutely blissful.
I'm 6'2 and preordered the scrambler, but I ended up switching to the Speed as the better handling won me over and I will be doing 99% on-road riding 🙂 Did a 3-hour roundtrip today with no issues or need to stretch.
Can I ask your weight also,I'm the same height but heavy too and love the look of the Speed.
@@howardneely2573 114kg
I am 5"10 and I was thinking I would be too tall for the speed.
@@ravenpillay it will be perfect
Still happy with your decision? I'm just shy of 6'2 and a bit concerned it'll feel like a toy
Slow-mo pigeon at 4:48 steals the show
Had to go back and 🤣
Was looking for the comment 😂😂😂
Looking SUS AF. 😝
🐦 🤣🤣🤣 👏
LOL ! brilliant, I'd missed that !
Already bought the Speed 400 and loving it to bits. Amazing bike for the price - does everything I need it to do and delivers a big smile every ride.
I agree. The Speed is the better of the two. Nice analysis👍
At £600 difference I reckon the right one to buy is the one you prefer.
Me, I'd get the green Scrambler.😊
I've just bought a Speed and love it. Did a hundred mile ride first time out and it didn't tire me in any way. Looking forward to some decent weather now!
SO much to say about this! (though annoyingly I see I’m near the 200th comment already so you might not see it!)
I bought the 400x (yes in the green sway).
I own the Street (aka Speed now) Twin 900 too.
Firstly let me explain my reasons for getting the 400 X .
I’m freakishly tall…at 176cm…yes Rob..a whole ONE centimetre taller than you (I remember towering over you at the bar at that promo event at Bike Shed a few years back 😂)…
So in actual fact, you’re totally correct…you need to be 180cm + (5’11) to really be able to chuck it round in the way you should..
I currently live on a hill with the bike parked on the narrow road outside with a steep camber on it so setting off and returning is always a heart in the mouth moment for me and probably somewhat entertaining for anyone looking out the window …
So why did I get it?
im a 6'4''' and just picked up the scrambler! Im loving it so far!!
Thanks
Speed over Scrambler for sure. Better brakes and better tyres are all the reason you need. Throwing in lighter and cheaper are 2 massive bonuses too.
Picking up my Black 400 speed on Friday😊😊😊
Me saturday 😊
I pick up a black too.
5 months since acquiring your Black 400 …..would be my choice too… how do you like it? I am interested in this bike…
I fitted an aftermarket radiator cover as none come as standard with the speed ,also had triumph lower engine bars fitted they are
Nice and neat offering some protection for engine covers.
And Just yesterday received the new Tec adjustable brake and clutch leavers for the 400 .
The other ones being sold are for a ktm and set the clutch lever further away from your hand but Tec has had correct new ones made to put it at the correct distance.
All in all I am very happy with the bike .
2nd on the 6 month review...
Would you recommend Scrambler for 5'6 guy?
@@whiterose5083 it will be tall. As I am tiptoeing on both side so you will have to tiptoe from side to side
And considering the weight it is better to go for speed, but try the scrambler once.
Cool video, totally agree.
Just got the CL500 Honda and love it.
Greetings from the NJ shore USA.
Now that's a bike that really surprised me. I rented one. Great bike
Theres one n just one reason i wouldnt buy that bike, the tedious exaust
I have ordered the Speed 400 in black a couple weeks ago, can't wait to get it. 🙂
It isnt enough road left?
Buy both, problem solved 😂. Honestly, biker should have more than one bike 💪
I'mm going to need a Vitpilen 401 vs Speed 400 test! Maybe also a Svartpilen 401 vs Scrambler 400x too!
I have a 37 inch inseam so, I'm leaning towards to the scrambler. Can flat foot both no problem but the scrambler seemed to have a little more room between the seat and pegs. I don't know if that was just in my head though.
3:15 absolutely ! I'm 6+, I guess that's why scrambler seems more attractive to me
I'm 5'10" ,and a man ,so the scrambler is right for me 😃.
@@leeinwis have a test ride and take some pictures while you are riding or standing still for Better understanding of it's riding difficulty for your height and how it looks according to height/size of this bike as compared to you.
I’m still debating if I want to trade my 310gs for one. Maybe if they come out with a tiger 400 adv bike. That would seal it for me.
Great video. Although their are different bikes and engine, I hésite between the Speed 400 and the Royal Enfield continental GT650
Is the cb300 still 286cc. There is a big power difference between the two bikes. 26hp vs 40hp.
That honda engine is proven too. I prefer the looks of the speed 400, but I'm a suckered for retros
I'm 6feet tall and I love my Speed 400. The handling is superb, sound is sweet and it looks amazing as well.

Im 6'2" & I chose Speed 400 & I love it ❤
I love both of these bikes and appreciate this review! I know you've also raved about the Trident 660 which does seem like an excellent bike, but for "smallish" in town bike, maybe the speed 400 even better buy than the Trident, thoughts?
I’m quite interested in the Speed 400 and keep looking at reviews. This is definitely the best review I’ve seen 😊
Husky svartpilen 401 rival? Some great deals on those atm
Got the 400x from a 1200gs. Superb machine. I chose this over the speed as I’m 6’2” and no issues with comfort
I’m looking at the scrambler 400 and the Husqvarna svartpilen 401. Just cannot decide which is the better. Thoughts?
What about comparing Triumph 400s with Husqvarna 401s,what would you choose?
Like the Speed version. I'm also 5'9" with a 30" leg. So the scrambler is too high a seat for me. So many bikes these days have too high a seat height for me to consider buying.
It's kind of crazy considering you're average height and still a lot of bikes are too tall. I have same measurements. Got a 6ft body and 5'5 legs fused together lol
It is annoying.
Agree with you completely the speed 400 is great as I have had the speed 900 before
I currently use the RE Hunter which is a 350 and want to upgrade. The upgrade will be below a 500cc, less than 900 mm n below 200 kgs. Would like to see a comparison btwn the Speed 400 and RE Guerrilla 450!
Speed 400 for me. Mine should be arriving in April.
I bought the speed 400 in black colour and I love it.
If you want an in between the 900 and the 400, a Yam xsr700 fits in very nicely, almost the power of a 900 but weight is a lot nearer the 400 ?
Ill wait for the svartpilen 401 comparison
I’m so on the fence. I’m 5’11” 32” inseam and on the heavy side at 250. Looking for feedback if the Speed would be comfy enough or too cramped.
Really good comparison. I definitely prefer the looks of the X but it's probably too tall for me. If I downsize from my T100 the Speed would be a serious contender.
How is the SPEED on the highway? Moderate solo touring?
I'm 5' 8", and I chose the scrambler for its dirt road capabilities. I wanted it for riding Back Country Discovery Routes. As for touching the ground, the seat height on most adventure bikes is worse than the 400x. In conclusion, the Speed is great if you don't ride on dirt. Maybe someday I'll own both.
Have you done the BDR on the Scrambler. I also want the scrambler for the MA BDR ? Thanks
I have ridden 90 miles of the dirt and gravel roads of the Seven Mountains portion of the PA BDR with my wife as a passenger. The tires worked fine for that.
The front mudguard is a bit short & looks like a fair bit of crud gets thrown into the radiator. A nice looking bike though
It still is comfortable in city and smooth on highways
In the end you touched on a good question for every review and reviewer.
When finished with your testing, do you find yourself wanting to continue riding it?
I dig your reviews man. I'm shooting for the Speed 400, my first MC coming from the scooter world. Currently on a BV 400 that would be hard to give up as she does just about anything in super comfort. Cheers from California 🤙🤙
Keep the BV400 scooter. You cant have too many toys. I now have 7 motorcycles & one scooter..... one of the best... a Honda Helix 250.
Got the Speedo Angels on my KTM.. perfect fit and keeps my piece of mind 👍🏽
Great insight thanks. Any chance of a comparison of shaft drive bike options. I hate chains. Thanks
Tell me im not alone in this opinion. The Scramblers Brown two part seat and the colorway paired with the Speed 400’s makeup would be the perfect bike for me.
Hey Bob - what do you think about the upcoming F450GS?! I was going to get a Transalp but if the Beemer is a bit cheaper I might just go for it.
How smooth is the single cylinder motor? Can you feel vibration through your hands or feet?
Hey Bob! Which one do you think is better between the Triumph Speed400 and the Honda CL500? Thank u
Any chance for 250cc version?
I like the 400 speed and have no problem with the bikes name on the tank. What I don't like is all the other paint lines on the fuel tank.
I have to say Speed looks really amazing in comparison to any other bikes in its category but the vibrations are real and can’t ignore
I own a 23 R1250 GSA and just put a deposit on a Speed 400. I want a small cc bike to ride around town that is light and nimble. I will use the GSA for long haul freeway riding and the Speed 400 for city riding.
I’m looking for a likewise jacket as the black one you’re wearing in the video. Any hints please?
On your Scrambler X review you said it had vibes on motorway speeds, I guess with the same engine you had the same thing with the Speed 400?
Any chance you can do an update review of the 2024 bobber
I sat on both and being a shorter rider (29 inch inside sesam) the speed was better for feet down but ...I like the looks of the 400x better, am still to decide...and then there is the RE Himalayan and CF Moto 450MT coming along!
Im having to wait till June for my Blue Speed400. Cant wait as i haven't really heard a bad word against it.
I was considering one of these for my first bike but fell in love with the new Rocket 3 so bought that instead
This video makes me want one even more! But damn, in my country Speed 400 costs close to 8000$ which is crazy! XSR700 costs around 10000$, would you recommend XSR with CP2 engine over Speed?
