      There is always the option of the Z400 with the Kawasaki. It has a way better riding position, same or even better torque and engine performance and I believe it would give a waaaay more comfortable riding, given it is the track, the Streets, highway or even the desert areas. You guys should give it a try and see how it goes!

      The Versys -X300 might be a good bike for a beginner considering it's lighter and not quite as fast. And only $6100. I wonder how it would have done in this challenge against the Beemer and the Himalayan.

    Change my mind: Anyone saying "don't get anything under 600cc or you'll get bored fast" is either a straight line highway rider or hasn't had many bikes.

      I’ve had my RE Classic 350 for a year now, and have been riding bikes since 1980, more or less.
      I have ludicrous amounts of fun on that little 350.

      That is too simplistic. Displacement does not equal horsepower, Engine design and overall weight are very important for performance. Even in this test, the Honda with 290cc easily outran the 349cc Royal Enfield. The KTM 390's and Kawasaki 400 twins are quicker than most V-twin cruisers under 900cc and are very close to stock 1200 sportsters. The Royal Enfield 650's are slower too, but still a lot of fun.
      I have been riding off and on for almost 50 years and currently ride a Z400 because it is light, fun and quick enough for me. For me, light weight and good handling make twisty backroads a lot of fun. Heck, even tootling though neighborhoods with sharp enough turns can be a good time.

    This was one of the rare 40+ minute videos on TH-cam that I started with no intention of watching the whole thing and skipping through sections, but ended up watching the whole video minute-by-minute in one sitting. Excellent quality, and really enjoyable seeing a group of friends competing and having fun.

    As a Ninja 400 owner (since 2019), I completely agree with this review. One thing I would like to add would be the reliability factor: in my 4 years (and 54K Kms) of owning the bike as a daily commuter and weekend mountain runs, it hasn't given me any problems or issues whatsoever.

      @@Tanya_Von-Degurechaff Surprisingly no valve issues (yet). It is, however, beginning to sound like I may need to replace the shims since there are now faint ticking sounds when the engine is hot. I've had it checked at around 40k Kms but it was still good then.

    As a recent convert to Royal Enfield, it was interesting to see how it compared head to head with its classmates & nice to see it put up a good fight. After owning other bikes, I found it gets back to basics so well & despite being scared by the low power, it actually goes really well in suburban riding. Specs & tests only say so much; motorcycles are about what moves your soul & RE does it for me.

      It was my favorite as well, also looks the best imo. The repair bill is a major thing, I like the Ninja 400 but imagine paying $350 to replace one scratched fairing... no thanks.

      They needed one more category judging each of the bikes on how cool they look while driving slow. :) The Enfield crushes the rest in that category.

      I wish the RE Classic 350 was available for the test. As stated above, it would have crushed on style. I have a Himalayan, and at 411cc, this may have been a different test altogether.

    Just a note: the Metacycle has 130Nm peak from its rear hub mounted motor. The Meteor 350 has 27Nm at the crankshaft times 2.3 for the primary drive, times 2.6 for 1st gear reduction, times 2.8 for the final drive - making a total of 452Nm of torque at the back wheel (@ 4,000rpm in 1st gear). Of course the Metacycle came last!

      Thanks for pointing that out. People - even professional testers - often confuse engine crankshaft torque and rear wheel torque, especially now that several e bikes use hub motors where the motor and the wheel are basically the same thing...

    The problem with the drop test is that it doesnt show how tough the bikes really are. As a beginner, I dropped my Meteor 350 three times. Only thing that needed replacing was the brake lever, once. The thing is a tank.

      Kudos to both but especially Patrick. You have to remember that the first scramblers were just cruisers without fairings, so Jen had a slight advantage.
      Patrick, with his weight, on a sport bike, getting air and curving corners on the dirt is very impressive and a testament of his skill

    As someone who wants to get into biking I think I would go for the Meteor tbh, I'm not looking for speed, I love the classic style plus its not too expensive in the repair costs compared to everything else and its not like I would be throwing it around to have reason to repair it constantly, if I had the money to factor in expensive repair costs I would maybe have the GS

      Which bike did you pick? If you don't have one yet, check 500 ccm offers. 20HP is too little power, and the Enfield is a heavy motorcycle for a 300 class.
      Something like ER 500 or CBF500 are both decent starter choices. Even SV650 is frankly a beginner-friendly motorcycle. If you are looking for a cruiser, such as a Royal Enfield Meteor 300, the Honda VT600C will handle even better than this and its reliability is day and night compared to Enfield.

      @@raghunathattarde960 It MIGHT be that they're riding at higher speeds. I rode in India (on a RE Himalayan in Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh) and it was hard to ride any distance at >100 KPH where here in the States you might not ride slower than that for the bulk of your ride especially outside of Urban areas.

      It has north of 4000 miles on it and I have 4 decades if riding experience and bikes of all sizes including many track days.
      I bought it for mountain roads and I run it.

    I ride a Meteor 350 myself as someone who only just first bought a motorcycle last summer, and I love it. I don't have nearly the time or the distance spent on the bike I'd like to at this point between a bad leg injury, a colder than usual winter, and now a bunch of road construction repaving my entire street -- but I am so eager to spend time in the saddle this year and develop my skills and confidence. What little time I have been able to spend on the bike has been lovely. Every now and then I even go out to the garage just to sit on it, or sit and look at it.
    Ari had it right in the conclusion, it has so much charm and presence for a fairly small little bike, and while I'm riding it at least I'm not at all bothered by relatively high weight or low power for its size; it's comfortable, it's pleasant, it's fun, it's surprisingly light and nimble feeling to maneuver. Of the five bikes in the video before and after the tests I stand by my choice and love my little RE, and I was quite happy actually that watching the video didn't sway me at all in my decision it made me even more confident that while each of the bikes is a great choice and the right bike for someone I already have the best of the five options possible for me.

      I fell in love with the RE classic but after research I went and bought the Int650 Mk2. My first bike as well. It came down to I have highway driving in Texas no city area near me.

    I think the reason the Sondors was so slow was that the claimed torque (if it's even accurate) is direct wheel torque, whereas the rest of the bikes have their engine torque multiplied by the transmission and chain, leading to a much higher wheel torque. It's like starting in 6th gear.

      Sondors deliberately limits the torque on initial acceleration runs by selecting “soft start” throttle mapping on the programming for its controller.
      I assume this is done in an effort to maintain new rider friendliness and long battery life.
      Many high power Electric bikes become uncontrollable stoplight wheelie machines without limiting the throttle mapping as 100% of their torque is delivered at zero rpm.

      @@beachdoktor1 Some gas bikes do the same thing. In this case, however, the Sondors was fighting for last with a Royal Enfield Meteor 350, so I don't think there was much risk of it being uncontrollable.
      The RE meteor 350 has a first gear drive ratio of approximately 3:1 and a final drive gear ratio of approximately 2.8:1. At the engine's peak torque of 27 NM, the rear wheel is getting 156.6 NM of torque, or 115.5 ft/lbs. That's not far off of what the Sondors claims.
      Accounting for a healthy dose of startup bullshit, and the fact that the two machines were roughly comparable in terms of performance makes a lot of sense.

      @@beachdoktor1 My Zero DSR definitely limits torque from a stop. Gun it from a rolling start though and it takes off like a rocket.
      My brother's FX software is a lot less limiting, and it will power wheelie like nobody's business. Even with over 30 less horsepower, it will beat my DSR from a stop up to about 30.
      Both bikes absolutely have the capability of looping out from a standstill if Zero were to allow 100% torque from a stop.

      @@beachdoktor1 Most of them don't limit it because they're uncontrollable - most of them do it to keep the transmission in one piece.
      Electric motors make a whole heck of a lot of torque at pretty much zero rpm and if you make a transmission (geared or otherwise) which can take that hit then you have more weight and a lot of extra drag which kills range.
      Since that torque ability drops off so soon they usually build the components to safely take the torque from a few mph because there's no point in having massive final drives or in the Sondors' case internal shafts when that torque is only there at pretty much a standstill.
      Lets be honest too - this thing couldn't keep with a Meteor 350 so there is no uncontrollable excuse on the planet thats going to wash.

      @@crudboy12 I don't have direct experience with these particular bikes but it is also possible that Sondors did that because of how electric motorcycles deliver their power rather than how much. Electric motors can put their power down much faster than a ICE motor can and that can and has caused issues for others. Although I think it is more likely that this is just a case of Sondors playing games with the spec sheets. I am not EV apathetic as a matter of fact I am planning on getting an EV. I also think the Sondors is a decent bike but they have already demonstrated themselves to be somewhat untrustworthy. Conjecture of course I know nothing.

    I thought it was AWESOME, how you displayed all the metrics for the bikes, lined up. THAT was a really cool little video effect, & was very easy to get all the info you'd want at first glance.

    Absolutely love my KRT green Ninja 400, which is my first bike. The only problem is that it looks faster than it is, not sure why everyone thinks I'm trying to race them. But being able to go full throttle and not die in the SoCal canyons makes it so fun.

    It would have been interesting to see which motorcycle they would have picked, if given the option. Then see if they still felt good about their pick at the end of the video. Similar to what new riders go through when picking their first bike. Great video as always!

      That would've been pretty cool, if the person who draws number one from the hat gets the first choice, then number 2 etc. But, the randomness was fun too. And the top two would've definitely been the BMW and the Ninja, with the Sondors no doubt going dead last.

    Such a great and entertaining video. Loved every second of it and walked away with a few more tokens of knowledge to boot! Would love to see a series come of this with differing barriers for entry as far as skill and price point. Even running the exact same tests would be fun to see again with a few beefier offerings.       @@stmboat I own one myself as my first bike (even the same Fireball Yellow colour way Jen is riding in the video) and I love it. Going in I expected it would probably come last in the testing overall, and was pleasantly surprised how well it did in the first two tests because I haven't done any accessory or replacement parts buying (and haven't dropped it yet), but of the five bikes presented if I had to pick one all over again to buy for myself it would still be the Meteor. I just love it to bits. Ari has it right in the conclusion, even though it's heavy and slow and the maintenance is inconvenient to say the least it's just so endlessly charming and pleasant to spend time on.
      Though I will say the idea of a more do-it-all adventure like the G310s is pretty appealing as well and would definitely be my choice if I were to pick a SECOND bike out of the same list.

      I've got no interest in the Meteor.
      But every time I see an RE, I do a head turn. They definitely have curb appeal for sure.
      Ok, I would definitely consider a GT, if I was in that market.

      @@JoshuaTootell : for city commuting, something like the Metor or Classic 350 is the perfect choice. However, if you need to blow down the highway, neither are going to impress you. But as the owner of a Classic 350, it turns heads like nobody's business. I think the old school charm simply wins people over. As somebody who owns big and small bikes, I can say there's a place for both.

    9:08, When you told that RE meteor is heaviest, i was like how is it possible. I own meteor and it feels lighter then my other same range bikes. But now i know why.

    Proud of the two Indian bikes on there :) I've ridden them (RE and GS) both and i gotta tell ya, the Indian motorcycle market has some of the toughest competition out there. These are some of the best motorcycles I've ridden and they're a great choice for any beginners out there.

      I also think it would have been interesting to swap out the Metor with either the Classic 350, Hunter, or Himalayan, but I think for this test they wanted to have a cruiser, sportbike, ADV, dual-sport, and electric. As the owner of several bikes including a beefy 1250 GSA, I'm still jumping on my Classic and Himalayan to have fun. I think RE is on a roll with things and the US market is really just now opening up for them.

      I have a '22 himi and I ❤ it. I put 1500 miles on it in the first month I owned it. My understanding is that RE is coming out with either a 450 or 650 as an update. I hope that they keep them oil-cooled thumpers with NO tech. I get complements on my bike all the time from old guys that think it is an old bike. They can't believe it when I tell them it's a '22.

    I got a G310GS because I wanted to try a little bit of every kind of riding, and I'm really glad I did. It's not the fastest or the offroadiest bike, but it has done everything I've asked it to with no complaints.

      The 310 unfortunately suffers in the same area the Himalayan does, HP. You're never going to win a speed race with either of them, but they are great bike choices. I've been riding for over 40 years now and still find myself on my smaller bikes more often than my big GSA for a lot of tasks.

    11:14 I want to mention that I had a friend crash his Meteor 350 at just 40kmph, but on the right side. His repair bill came up to 75k Indian Rupees approx (a third of the cost of the bike). The whole exhaust, both master cylinders and the metal parts added up big time. Meanwhile my Yamaha R15 crashed at 80kmph and I spent less than 4k INR because the fairings kept the pricey bits away from the tarmac.

    I love how even though the tally sheet tells the "most capable" and "must-a-choice bike", they still highlight and compliment them at the end of the video.

    wish you guys also included a "off the bike manouvering" test as well as pointing out comfort and confidence when riding in situations (twisties, urban, offroad)

    To be fair, that last test also depended a lot on rider skill. I'm sure you're all good riders, but I'd have been interested to see the range of finishing orders if you're all swapped bikes.

    Having owned a Ninja 250 and a Royal Enfield 500 I would have to choose the Ninja 400 and the RE ( but in the classic 350 style with dirt tyres as these make a great dual sport bike). With my type of riding these 2 would cover every type of riding I would need. The 400 for when I need a bit of speed and the 350 when I want a bit of class.

    Great concept, entertaining and informative execution!
    I think that with the choice of tests, the scoring only really shows how "compromised" the two bikes in last place are; or rather, how much more focused they are in their respective niches. The Honda is soft and friendly for trail and city use and the Royal Enfield is intended to be more of a laid-back "vintage experience" on a budget. Neither are really the peak of today's do-it-all machines, but certainly each represents much of what bikes do best and also offer a slightly different flavour from the norm.
    The Sondors coming mid pack probably shows that electric really works for an everyday bike, amazing actually.
    Ultimately, the fact that the Ninja won shows that the old maxim in biking still holds true: he who has the most power, stays out front :D

    I had my heart set on a ninja 400 as my first bike, ended up getting a second hand Honda CBR250R. And then I couldn’t decide between the ninja400 or the meteor 350 as a second bike, this just made that choice even harder! 😂

    17:03, Jen's build up and then her laugh after she wins against the sondors was the highlight of my week. I rewatched that like 5 times and laughed so hard each time.     While there is a place for this category of bikes, whenever I'm talking to someone thinking about getting into riding, my usual suggestion is to buy used. Usually you can keep it for a year, put some miles on it, and when you are ready to upgrade, sell it for nearly the same money that you paid for it. many people don't realize that bikes hold value much better than cars do, but the transition from new to used still comes with a good chunk of depreciation.

      There's a sort of comfort in knowing your bike is new from the dealer, still under warranty, and you can go through the dealer no questions asked for all sorts of maintenance needs and part replacement and so on. As well as not needing to wonder what the previous owner did or did not do to the bike during their time with it. Especially as a new rider without the experience on bikes and around bikes, there are a lot of extra potential pitfalls buying used. BUT obviously you're right there are very many great used bikes similar to (or even exactly for the four gas machines) the bikes in the video, and you can get them for a lot cheaper than buying the new one. There's effectively a huge surcharge for that confidence and convenience at the dealership as opposed to buying second-hand.

    I did my riding classes and exam on a Ninja 400. Super cool and super fun but also super uncomfortable for me. I never knew of the Sondors or RE Meteor 350. They look nice, I'll have to try them sometime!
