  • If you've ever had your soft top fly open driving down the highway, the cause is most likely a latch that is not properly engaging. It's something that happened to me. So, I put together a quick video to show you how to adjust the latch. All you'll need is a T-30 and T-40 Torx bit and driver.

I'm a potential future Gladiator owner here (never had any Jeep product), just poking around learning as much as I can. I ended up here after reading on some forums about the issues people have had with the soft top unexpectedly coming unlatched at highway speeds and sometimes resulting in disaster.
Never had an opportunity to drive and ride in one yet. For the reason you described, (2 latches to see the sky), my plan is to get one with a soft top. Out of curiosity, how loud and/or safe do you find it to drive at 70-80mph with the top open? With how the top collects at the back but high up at the rear of the cab (opposed to lower on the Wranglers), I wasn't sure how that impacts things.
Thanks for the detailed video, makes me feel better seeing that a minor adjustment can get the latches to secure much better. Are there any aftermarket products that you're aware of that secure the latches even better, as an additional fail safe to avoid unintentional opening? I'd hate to experience having the soft top unexpectedly open and rip off at highway speeds.
    Thanks for your time!

I have a hard and soft top. The soft top is louder on the highway, but not so much that it’s a major worry. Having the top flipped back has never been an issue. We do it all the time as the kids love it. I am not aware of any aftermarket latches. I don’t think they would be necessary. Once the latches are adjusted properly, it’s not a issue.

Have you had any issues with soft top noise going above 70mph? The noise can be super loud at times and I can’t figure out how to fix it. Thanks!

Mine is loud over 70mph as well. It's always been like that. The hard top is a little better, but not drastically. I'm not sure if anything can really be done.

ive had an issue the past month were the soft top has been violently shaking over 30 mph and my soft drivers back window feels that it's going to pop off at 50...feels like air's maybe getting in? That's the only way I can explain it in terms of the soft top shaking but I've never had any water leaks or a stream of wind pass through as if there was an air leak. Possible that this might be the issue/fix??

Sounds like one of the brackets came loose. I would flip the top back and bolt check all of the door surround hardware first. Next, make sure those rear corners are set in place correctly. If it still seems off, try the latch adjustment trick.

I just installed my softtop But now I can’t release the 2 latches under the visor to flip back the top. I can release one of the latches but the second one is still under a lot of tension and won’t unlatch.

I would make sure the top isn’t sitting slight crooked. Just loosen the bolts and latch is again. If it’s still too tight at the latch, I would adjust it back some. Essentially, opposite of what I did in the video.

My issue is I can’t get them to unlatch. One will and then the other won’t. So do I need to loosen them?

Correct. If it's not unlatching, I would try backing up the latch mount so it's not so tight.
