I recently did a 3000 mile road trip with my cx9 and yes, its super smooth, quiet, hauls ass and is relatively efficient as well. Light on its feet and agile like a giant swan merged with a hummingbird. It’s actually perfect for a small family of four.

Yes I agree there should be a standard for fuel octane. Nice review. I really like Mazdas. I had a 2006 Mazda 3. No major problems. Had it for 12 years. It was getting rusty, but still ran great. Now I have a 2016 CX5.

Enjoyed the review. If I ever bought a mid size SUV for myself (wife already has an XC60), it would likely be this one. Regarding the US fuel octane, keep giving us the option, both with available fuel and engines like this that can take advantage of the better fuel, but also drink the cheap stuff if you prefer.

I worked on one of these recently as the owner hit a kangaroo. I give it full points that the Reo Bar, the radiator & sensor module behind the grill badge didn't get any damage. The downside is that the front bar has a ton & I mean a ton of screws, clips & trim pieces that takes time to pull apart. The driver side headlight was AUD$4000 & we had to wait 4 weeks for it to come from Japan. There are so many pieces to the front bar that defies why they couldn't have simplified it for repairs. All up over AUD$8500 to repair.

YES! we need to increase the octane of our fuel. modern engines run so leanly to achieve better fuel economy that pre-ignition will be a growing problem as current cars age and develop carbon build-up, increasing destination!

I had a 2015 Ford Fusion with the 2.0 Ecoboost. It also had increased performance on premium fuel. I could tell a difference between regular and premium fuels. I decided to put premium at every fill-up. My tailpipes would accumulate a lot of black soot on the tailpipes when using regular fuel, however, when I used premium fuel the tailpipes stayed much cleaner. Very interesting!

Mazda always delivers solid vehicles and this is pretty typical. Ford, Chevy and Dodge equivalents feel cheap compared to their Mazda counterparts. That said, I think a vehicle the size of a CX9, and the Signature in particular, deserves a turbo six to make it stand out from their other cross-overs. As usual, a great review, Sarah.

Another great review, Sarah. I'm glad that you took your penguins out for the ride with you and that you belted them in, for safety. Thanks for the garage science regarding the torque converter in this Mazda. One of the best cars I ever owned was a Mazda, so I like the brand. I agree with you, that the oil companies should make 93 octane fuel available everywhere. I have two cars that require 93 and adding octane booster to get to 93 is a pain. Make sure you get your name on the list to review a C-8 Corvette. I'd like to see that video. As always, keep up the great work.

I have this car. I may never put hi-Octane fuel in it. Why? It cruises great on 87. If you want to drag other cars then don't get an SUV - you will always lose. Had an STI before this - really fast, bumpy, noisy and FUN so I can recommend that for SPEED. The CX-9 has COMFORT! Quiet, smooth ride, great handling and real nice looking in and out. The storage is not the most in it's class but we don't need more. There is plenty of room. The GT model has optional NO console in between the second row captain's chairs. Don't need it and the 3rd row access is much improved without it. Step through between the seats.
Love your review Sarah - covered all the bases.

I don't think we need to increase the octane of regular gas, since you can buy higher octane fuel for those cars that can take advantage of it. The oil companies would just use it as an excuse to jack up the prices even more than they already do. The 6-speed auto in my '13 Mitsubishi Outlander GT keeps the torque converter clutch engaged a lot more than most, and it definitely improves the feel. Still wish it was a manual, but since almost nobody wants one of those in a crossover, only a few of the smaller ones have it available; so a decent auto with paddle shifters is a reasonable compromise. I liked the Mazda CX5 and CX9 when I was shopping, but wished they had one in between. Great review as always, but maybe you should start wearing oven mitts when you do Garage Science 😎

Plus there’s a lot of safety features, that can save your family, that weren’t mentioned here. Yes, I do owe one and saved my family from a horrible accident. This crossover is rated high in safety which is a win win for me.

I've got a Buick TourX with GMs EcoTech turbo 2.0 and AWD. GM "recommends" premium but does not require it. Engine produces 259 hp and 295 lb ft, I feed it 91 octane (the highest you can get at altitude - I'm at roughly 6,500 ft on a daily basis) because I want all the hp/tq that I paid for.
Higher octane fuels need to be easier to get and 93 octane should be available everywhere.

Allo Sarah! François from Canada. Looking at your smile while you were pushing it in the curve, it's look like you actually enjoy it.
I a funny coincidence that you review a CX 9 since I just bough one two weeks ago (2018 GT with only 35k). For the gas octane question, apparently this engine will run really fine with 87 octane and will probably give more then the announced 227 HP when exterior temperature is cold. With temperature near or below 32f (0c in Canada ;) ) the engine will deliver near 250 HP, even with 87 octane gas.
Driving it hard and over the speed limit most of the time, I'm really also impress with the high mileage per liter. I do agree that we can fell the little Zoom Zoom while driving it but nothing close to a car... My Civic SI will be more then welcome for those day when I really want to feel G while cornering and not been ejected to the passenger seat while doing it.

Since its 98 Octane is 30 cents extra here in Australia 🇦🇺, I always put the regular gas in mine. After all we buy this CX9’s to be family hauler

I would say higher octane should only be used if it creates a circumstance of higher gas mileage or better performance. If you are getting miniscule of either then premium fuel is pointless

Yes - drop ethanol in fuel except for E85 and get octane to 87 and 93 octane but with NO ethanol.

One of my vehicles use 93...it costs a whopping $6.00 more a week to operate. I’d rather keep the power as high as possible, plus according to other videos I have seen there are more detergents and additives in the premium fuels. With DI I’d rather have as much cleaning as possible.

Raising the octane rating, or anti-knock index, doesn't really change the energy content of a given gallon of gasoline. A higher octane rating indicates greater resistance to knock, the early combustion of the fuel-air mixture that causes cylinder pressure to spike. That's all. This soccer Mom mobile will operate perfectly well with 310 lb ft of torque versus 325. OTOH, the savings to her pocketbook over the course of her Mazda ownership tenure will certainly be a pronounced difference. Speaking of which, do you use high octane gas in your Subie? Is it required? Have you run both back to back and felt any noticeable difference?

  • @davidmesraje1695
    @davidmesraje1695 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yup just standardize fuel grade, higher and cleaner octane sounds like a no brainer :3
