To clear up things here, when I mentioned that I installed the driver side part at the passenger side, I meant the old broken driver side part, I knew it was popping but I installed it there just to make sure that it's going to fit and work prior to ordering the part that is categorized as "Driver side" by online sellers. It was impossible to find an after-market part sold as "Passenger side".
My 2004 Sienna was making a horrible popping/clanking sound when I opened and closed the door. When I looked closer, I saw the assembly had pulled away from the door. My Van had 150k on it so I thought I would try to fix it myself. I drilled a small hole where I saw the spot welds had broken. I then installed a small sheet metal screw. Quiet like new again. Didn't cost anything. I got the idea from another TH-camr that used a rivet. Its winter here, but when it warms, I install a couple of rivets. $450 at Toyota just wasn't happening this time.
Yes, 2004 and some 2005 have this additional problem, the door is too weak to hold on to the check (stopper). It's too late now for a recall. It's worth the trial and error. You can look up in your local junk yard if they have a door off a 2007 - 2010, they don't have this issue.
