I find it engaging how Luke, and Anakin/Vader used the same lightsaber style but with very different mindsets and how that changed how the style worked. Where Vader saw a proficient weapon he could use to enforce his will on any who opposed him, Luke saw a shield something he could use in the effort of saving lives even his own Father's life when he triumphed over him.
After finding the Great Holocron. Luke would go on to master all 7, Lightsaber forms. Yes, even Juyo. Blending all of their particular strengths into his Djem So. His fighting style by the time of the Vong invasion was the aggression of Form 1, elegance of Form 2, defense of Form 3, agility of Form 4, power of Form 5, integrated skills of Form 6, and understanding to avoid the corruption of Form 7. Kyle and Luke also developed the Fast, Medium, and Strong Forms at the Jedi Praxium.
The Fast style integrates the Agility of Ataru and combines it with the elegance of Makashi. The Strong Style is a combination of Djem So and Vapaad, and the Medium Style is a combination of Shi-Cho and Niman. Katarn is also rumored to have developed a Slow or Controlled Style by combining Forms I and III
I love Luke and all, but isn’t that disrespectful to his father and again how you perfected his form and then added bits and pieces of others to actually perfect it
This is perfect. Luke is true Jedi! Perfect Jedi.Yes,Luke was raised completely differently. He knew true love, compassion, friendship, empathy.Owen and Beru taught him this. He had all of this and more. May the Force be with you too😊
It could be also argued that form 3 is used because of compassion for your enemy since you give them time and many chances to stop attacking you and let them find error in their ways and let them therefore live
I always admired how he was able to use such a powerful and aggressive style without falling to the dark side like his father. One interesting fact that you didn’t mention is that Luke also learned some elements of form three, soresu, from Obi-Wan Kenobi’s journal. This helped him to improve his defensive skills and balance his offensive tendencies. He even used soresu to deflect blaster bolts from stormtroopers on Endor. Luke truly was a versatile and skilled duelist, and a perfect Jedi. Thanks for this awesome video!
I like that Luke took on a more martial artist view, which is yes, I do have power, but I choose how I use it. To end a conflict as quickly and peacefully as possible. It was good video.
I'd argue that the Dark Side temptations of Form V also enable a skilled and at-peace Jedi to empathize with their enemy. To understand why they are so ensnared by power, and therefore have a better chance of breaking the Dark Side's hold on them.
Luke was brought up with love and responsibility, and only with what the Jedi was supposed to be, Anakin grew up in fear, and with legends of the Jedi, to compare against. Two different times to different environments
He didn't master the form beyond me, he simply added patience. That was the "mastery". If only I was patient, I would have destroyed Obi-wan, the Emperor and taken the Empire for myself...
I might also offer my own conjecture here. Form 5, Djem So, is arguably NOT the most physically demanding form of lightsaber combat - that would be Form 4, Ataru, which was described as being aggressive, athletic attack, accentuated by force-assisted jumps and acrobatics, and was known to be more problematic for older practitioners of the form if used for prolonged engagements.
It’s such a shame that this channel still hasn’t reached 2M subscribers yet. I hope at the very least you’re still gaining subscribers because I’ve always loved your type of content here.
I would love a video comparing movies Luke, and novels Luke, cause sometimes they seem like two different people, and it might be interesting to treat them that way.
To be peaceful is to be capable of great violence and choose not to do so. To be merciful is to have your enemy not at your mercy and choose to spare them rather than strike them down.
Yeah Luke started of a master of basic form f and then created his own version of it, by adding in elements of ataru and soreso into it to adapt for its limitations. Before going on to master all of the other forms as well and create new forms for the new jedi order. Showed how efficient and capable Luke was as a jedi and learner in order to become such a master deulist over various and all forms during the course of his career as a jedi and future grandmaster.
Another super interesting video! I'm glad you give us chances to explore Luke more in detail, contrary to what Disney did at the beginning. Thank God they SLIGHTLY redeemed themselves with some Luke and Grogu scenes
People will complain that Luke Skywalker is “too perfect“. That would be nowhere near the truth! In film and literature, we have seen Luke Skywalker not just succeeded… but also fail. I know that Kyle Katarn is one of the coolest characters to play in a video game, but there is no character that will match that of Luke Skywalker!
To refer to another series entirely, this reminds me of pre-Heresy Horus Lupercal. He believed that a decisive victory that left the enemy with no hope to win was the height of mercy in conflict. A protracted struggle meant more troops into the grinder, more hardship on the civilians.
Luke definitely was borderline darkside at Jabba's both in the palace and Sarlaac pit battle, but to be fair he gave Jabba 3 chances, i love both lines "You should have bargained Jabba, its the last mistake you'll ever make" even in the novelization he was hoping Jabba wouldnt bargain. Even on the plank he gave Jabba his last chance "Jabba, this is your last chance, free us or die" Then goaded by the Emperor and Vader Luke unleashed his darkside
Anakin was special to me his light saber form has always been my favourite he was a pure warrior and would have fit right in with the Knights of the old republic imagine Anakin facing off Darth Malgus
So Luke’s pocket Plan B to diplomacy is: 1. Overwhelm opponent as quickly as possible. 2. Pull back the instant the fight has been won. 3. Grandmaster goes to (less)aggressive negotiations. I imagine him accomplishing 2 by being able to detect the moment his opponent has “folded” the fight emotionally. I agree this strategy is a big part of what makes Luke Skywalker one of the greatest characters in fiction. How does that square with him attempting to murder Ben Solo before he’d fallen to the dark side. That choice seems to really abandon this strategy.
I think there is something important in representing flaws and moments of weakness in heroes. They are intended to be something we look up to, but there is value in seeing them as imperfect, too
No doubt. I agree with that statement. Showing a character flaws is different than the character completely deviating from what makes them that character. The act of preemptively striking his own nephew is just not at all Luke and not in line with the Jedi Order he was building. His Order didn’t shy away from attachment the same way Yoda’s did. It just doesn’t seem to fit with who Luke is or with the example he was looking to be as Grandmaster. Also the action alone would have likely turned Luke to the Dark Side.
Based on this explanation of Luke’s style, Darth Bane had a similar mindset of both attack and defense but adding in some patience to aid the blade work. Something that Sith don’t use often yet it’s what made Bane’s style just as deadly as Luke’s.
Luke did train alot and got alot of knowledge through holocrons etc from master jedi. In the novelisation it was stated that while dueling vader he quickly improved what he knew of the form by studing and copying vader. Someone else here also had a nice explanation of what happened when he learned the other forms from a great holocron. But most improtantly is that he faced alot of skilled duelist, chief among them vader and prime palpatine ( they where extremly talented and he faced em early, giving him alot of time to use these experiences as a basis to further improve his skills). There where alot more and alot of diverse enemies and situations that further helped him evolve his dueling. Lastly though i believe it is the mindset of both the order and the 2. The old jedi where very conservative in what was allowed to be learned and what wasnt, alot of stuff was hidden away. Anakin himself also never strayed far from what he knew, he liked the form and only adapted it when he needed to (after having his body destroyed and wearing a heavy slow suit). Plus he was arrogant and very confident in himself Luke on the other side was always open to alot of outside info and teachings, thats something he also imparted in his order. He made sure to keep his followers as safe as can be, but also realised that widening once understanding, even towards the dark side, is needed to grow both as a person and in strength. He much like anakin was very confident in himself, but unlike anakin, that doesnt come from arrogans, but from a balance with who he is ( a sort of inner peace and understand of himself)
Luke isn't the real Chosen One, George stated it was Anakin even as Vader he was. Obi-Wan was the only person who thought Luke was the Chosen One but ultimately I don't believe he was. Edit - There is no "real continuity" it's all made up and personally I love the Sequel Trilogy and love some tidbits of Legends but I believe canon is arbitrary and is up to the fan.
Anakin did actually master Djem So, during their duel in Rots Dooku stated that Anakin was the finest user of Djem So he had ever seen, but yes Luke definitely did perfect it more than Anakin
Anakin is known to solve things through action alot of times, and speech more than lightsaber swinging, Luke solves through peace, negotiation in a calm way and protect if the need arises and fits to the values of Luke and the force, for Anakin Skywalker during 9-19 he didn't have 100% optimal force training and understanding as a force user, Anakin is a Jedi Guardian role, jedi counselors are more Intune with the force. Qui-gon will be a best fit for that role, so the abilities that Luke gained it's a parallels that mint-condition Anakin would achieve(with a sight difference depends on the time). Anakin's right forearm cells and Luke's hand is a huge difference.
@TheStupendousWave hey I just had an idea for a possible series of videos about Lightsabers: Hilt Materials, their properties, and their History and Use in Legends and Canon Continuity! The reason why I say this is because I took a Lightsaber Material Hilt Quiz and I got Laminasteel, which, in Jedi Fallen Order, the Material is Green in Color, while in Jedi Survivor, it is a golden color so I was wondering if it was possible if you could do this!
If that somehow happened, he would have likely defeated Palpatine and prevented the rise of the Empire in that timeline. However, it is an open question what would happen in that timeline after that.
Annnd, Disney just has a fascination to kill the Luke Skywalker story by any means possible, which is completely against what real Star Wars fans want. Wake up and listen to the fans, Mickey!!

Honestly, Luke is not on his fathers level. Luke couldn’t even defeat abaloth, Anikin literally subdued both the son and daughter at the same time one mordis with no difficulty. Luke was peak but if his father was not maimed he would have literally been a god
I am so sick of hearing about Luke being such a master of the blade . Anyone who actually believes that has obviously never picked up a blade in their life . He swings his saber like a drunk swinging at a moving pinata . Other than a few moments in disney's Mid-dolorian ....... he was below par .
Its easy to "perfect" a form... if your the only one doing it. Even if he had done so with Form 5, he wasnt as good at it truly as Anakin. Annie never got the chance. Often theres quite a few ways to "master" something. Anakin was starting to contemplate holding back an restraint when he felt, pondered, an questioned the outcome of his famous ending against Dooku. So Anakin, while very slowly WOULD'VE in time "perfected" Form 5 in the same way Obi Wan did to Form 3 had Anakin stayed a Jedi long enough.
More skilled perhaps, but not more powerful. Luke was as powerful as Vader in episode 6 and became far more powerful afterward in Legends. Rotj Vader is very comparable to (and arguably stronger than) rots Anakin.
I don't see it.... I can see the handwavy, it happens in extended material excuse, but the simple truth is at no time did Luke Skywalker ever seem to be a good lightsaber wielder. He never won a duel, ever.... And his biggest accomplishment was taking out battle droids, something his dad and the rest of the Jedi did on a daily basis in their sleep. Luke isn't that great, he is barely capable.
And yet all these characteristics of awesomeness were thrown in the garbage so we could get Jake Skywalker, the weak and pathetic recluse that failed at everything and walked away from it all because Disney is rottenly stupid to its very core. I swear seeing this stuff about the awesome Expanded Universe gives me an ever deeper seething hatred for what Disney has done to Star Wars. The new Jedi video games about Cal Kestis have been THE ONLY thing good come along in the last decade. And the last 3 minutes of Mando Season 2 when we got to see that one tiny sprinkle of a vision of what could have been.

There’s an old saying that it’s not the style that makes the fighter but the fighter that makes the style
It's a good relevant saying tbh.
Djem-So sounds like..."Beware the fury of a patient man."
Especially when wielded by Luke.

The biggest difference between Luke and Anakin is that luke was one thing Anakin never was. Luke was humble
If I may correct one thing Stupendous Wave said. Luke is known for his peace. Anakin is known for his violence.
In my opinion darth vaders force of nature fueled "violence" as savage as it may be, still yet even has a certain disciplined controlled chaos aspect.
I agree.
