Thx for your Video. It worked, Ultegra 6800, i used a Shimano M8000 Cassette sprocket 11-40. Originally there was a 11-32 Cassette. I needed a spacer, it took a while to find out the right width. Now it works, thank you man, heavy Drivers must help themselves.
Good info. I didn't believe that this "fix" would actually work when I saw it for the first 300 times over the last few years from Durianrider but now I do believe. Thanks.
I saw your video and went for it. The only difference is that my cassette is a SunRace CSMX8 and i needed a 1,85mm spacer. Works perfectly. Thanks man :)
Thanks. i have a tiagra 2x 50/34 up front, 34 cassette. I put a 42 cassette and was only able to get to the 2nd gear, the 37. I put the roadlink on as you have done, no problem. Did a gravel race, was ok. 2nd race was a disaster, lots of gravel, some mud, lots of rain. Something bound, the derailler caught on something (i did not crash) and the rear derailler rotated clockwise and then ended up in the spokes. I was in a middle rear gear. This severed the gear cable and housing, cracked the derailler - at the part around the screw that goes into the roadlink, and the roadlink snapped in half, horizontally. I did the last 25 miles in 10th gear lol. That was my experience. Since i was able to shift onto 37 i decided to put a 36 cassette on the back without the link, and a new derailler. It's been fine. Luckily my mtb is a 10 speed and has the same 36 tooth cassette. I put the 42 on it with a goatlink and so far so good. I get no complaints from the gears and i do way tougher/jumpier terrain. But probably only around 100 miles so far, vs 100s on the gravel bike. I don't know what caused the problem but the limit on the roadlink i think is 40 or 36. If you look at the shimano box, the 40 and 42 are known as mtb cassettes. The rear derailler is a shadow plus on my mtb, has a clutch and is way more appropriate for a large cassette. I am also going to put the spare 650b wheels with thinner tires, with a 36 tooth cassette on my gravel bike and it should also work fine. Mix and match my friends. But be prepared for an on trail/course repair. If i had known about the zip strap trick i could have locked the broken rear derailler into a middle gear and had a better time of it. Being careful with a cracked derailler would have gotten me by, but the severed cable could have been bypassed with this zip strap trick i found. You basically thread it where the wire would go and tighten it to where the derailler moves to the gear you want it, locking it into the line of that gear.
Hi, thanks for the video. It was helpful. I can report I had success fitting an 11-40 11-speed cassette on my Domane with 105 GS (medium) cage derailleur, Wolf Tooth RoadLink extension, and new KMC chain (118 links shortened to 116 plus one for missing link - I think I can remove 1 or 2 more links if I wanted). In regards to the need for a spacer. I do believe this should have a spacer. I tried with and without. Without the spacer, it looks good, and shifts alright on the bench, but the cassette has lateral play (along the axis of the wheel axle). You also don't feel the lockring engage the knurled surface on the cassette. Instead it presses against the freehub body (I think) which may not be designed for that.. This has worked great for about 250 miles and counting. Big-Big and Small-Small works, but obviously is not ideal (noisy). Reasonable gear selections work great. I'm enjoying having this huge gear range, it matches my usual hilly routes perfectly, and lets me maintain a high cadence even on steep hills without sacrificing top speed down the other side.
Thank you very much for your input. I too have a 105 GS, and i'm planning to buy a 11-40T cause of steep hills. I also like to have a higher cadence on those steep hills. So after 1 year, does it still work great? The spacer is next to the smallest cog to eliminate play?
New Ultegra long cage can take 11-40 natively with no adapter. I recommend Ultegra RX with a clutch, because the large cassette has a lot of rotational inertia resulting in a kickback if you stop pedaling abruptly. Clutch largely resolves that issue.
Hi there. i recently done smth similar. my parts as below, 105 5800 50-34t ultegra 6700(10s) short cage RD 11-34t Shimano M771 cassette(10s) hanger/dropout extension HG 701 116 links chain(removed total 3 links) My problem is my front crank 34t wont be able to match rear cassette when is on 23t(fourth biggest) and below. if i go lower with front 34t, example front 34t with rear 21t, the chain will be slacking. almost total no tension at all. any solution? or just void shifting these combinations? slightly chain rubbing with 50t front with all of the 10 sprocket at the rear.
Hi there. My problem. Right now I have shimano 105 road shifters 2x11. Also i have shimano xt crankset, but I bouth 3x11 crankset and take of last one chainring 22 teeth, so now I have double crankset 40/30. Cassete is 11/32 and rear derailleur is shimano 105 SG medium cage. Also I have integrated hanger for rear derailleur. Right now it works perfect, but I wont to buy new cassete 11/40. What is the best option for me? Thanks
Thanks for the vid. Thought you might be able to help me with a problem. I get chain rubbing my front mech when i use the large chain ring in the front and the smallest cog at the back of a 11-33T cassette. Tried playing around with the limit screws but no give... Any ideas?
Does long cage Shimano derailleurs work with 23-12 cassettes? Because on Shimano website its says min. teeth count is 25 for any long cage derailleurs.
Would 56 × 11 × 42 ratio on R8000 groupset work with rear long cage / added extention hanger? Thanks for your videos by the way, in 2020 April, I had no bike shops open and learned to do many bike michanic ops that I normally would have a local shop take care of. THANKS TO YOUR VIDEOS !! Now I do it all myself with no wait exception to my own completion speed. Thanks again for your expertise 🙏
Also do you have any recommendations on taking your setup, similar to mine (except 11 gears), to a single chainring? With the same cranks. I have a pressfit bb86.5.
I willing to make same process in a gravel bike with shimano DRX 800 rear derailleur and 11-34 cassette. I want to put an 11-42 cassette instead. Do you think it will fit without road link? Thx. Cheers
Got my new Scott Addict 20 from the shop yesterday. Upon my request, the mechanic installed the XT 11-40 cassette with the 105 R7000 RD. Used spacer and longer chain, but no road link. Working fine on the test drive, low-low and big-big crosschains included (not reccomended, but to rest assured we are on the safe side if we do it by mistake sometime).
Hello there, thanks for the great video and information. I intend to fit this onto an ULTEGRA Di2 KRD6870GS with an 11/32 cassette at present (with 50/34 at the front). Solloking at your instructions, an 11/40 XT cassette will do - with a new chain as well. I am however concerned over cross chaining and the bad consequences on the chain and worst, on the derailleur (a Di2). I am regularly going in the Alps and there will be times, during a looooong and difficult climb when I may cross chain a little. I am worried that under - let's say a heavy load and changing gears at the same time, I may wrap and / or break the hanger or worse the derailleur. Have you been worried about this? Do you think it could happen? In addition, do you think that synchronised shifting may help to avoid cross-chaining? (unfortunately, I cannot check the E-Tube application, as I only have a Mac at home and this only works with PCs - my Di2 is not compatible with Bluetooth either). Looking forward to reading from you and thanks again for the info. well done. Lionel
Synchro in Di2 is a great thing and you can have your system programmed never to go Big/Big or Small/Small and MAP a custom shift plan... That way you don't have to ever worry that you may inadvertently screw up... I am planning on using a XT 11-42T cassette.
Just installed and 11-40 Sunrace cassette with the road link onto my bike, the only problem I have is when in the largest gear at the back pedalling forward is perfect, however when back pedalling the chain slips down three or four gears? Any help is appreciated
UPDATE : After some further inspection of the bike, I have also ruled out that my chain is not long enough. It is long enough. My "issue" (which is really isn't an issue) boils down to 2 things: 1. relatively short chainstays 2. narrowness of 11 spd chain why do I say this? Because, like I mentioned before, shorter chainstays give an exaggerated chainline angle. And the narrow 11 spd drivetrain means that tolerance between cogs and chain is tight. So combine a higher chain angle with tight chain/cog tolerance, it means that backpedaling will cause the cogs to want to make the chain jump. On my other bikes, they're all 10 speed and with longer chainstays. And this is why I don't experience backpedal issue on the other bikes because their chains have more room to move about between the cogs (thus the cogs don't cause chain to jump). So that's that, I think I got it right, right?? Solution is don't backpedal eh. But, hey, sometimes I backpedal (by raising my foot) half a revolution to either get my foot in a ready position (3- or 9- o'clock), or I might backpedal half a rev backwards to put my foot down as I unclip. So I just have to make sure I'm not in the big chainring while also in the 1st or 2nd cogs (top biggest ones)
great! thank you & appreciate you sharing the video. Sorry am a newbie in this cycling, but what model is that shimano 11-40t cassette? will this effect my speed on flats or on the descends? currently on 11-32t with compact like yours. thank you. (wondering if the shimano carry's 11-36 & 11-38 too?)
Faizal Tamrin The cassette is Shimano XT it makes no difference to riding on the flat or decending only to climbing long steep hills. In 11 speed Shimano you can only get 11-40 or 42 rear cassettes.
Ultrafitrunner You will need a Road Link to drop the derailleur down, you may not need a new derailleur just purchase a link first. No longer B screw is needed a new full length chain will be required Think its a KMC X9 on your Giant.
Do you have problems of chain skipping in the back when in the 50/11? Mine keeps skipping when I shift to the 11t in the rear and 50 in front when using the 11-40t cassette. This doesn't happen running the 11-32. All the other gears run fine only problem I have is in the 50/11.
A triple crank would typically have a granny ring at the front, say 26teeth. If you fitted a 40t cassette on the back your feet would be a blur spinning so fast to keep the bike going along. You need to be travelling at 1.5m a second to stay upright. Download an app like gear calculator onto your phone. The smallest gear inches you'll need is 18 chain inches. . My touring bike has 20 chain inches and that gets me anywhere.
The XT rear derailleur will fit without a roadlink but unless you are using the bike offroad then your better off sticking with the 105 derailleur and link, that and i don't think road shifters are totally compatible with a mountain bike derailleur as the cable pull may be different.
Thanks. Another question: Do you have the medium rear derailleur GS or did you fit a long cage SGS from a other group. Because shimano has is no longe cage in the 105er groupset.
You can use the XT RD BUT since the Road Shifters have a different pull ratio, Wolf Tooth sells the "Tanpan" that can be attached to the cable to convert the pull ratio... I am personally using the 105 5800 groupset and all I did was to add the Roadlink and a new chain with an XT 11-42T cassette. It has worked great. Just try to stay away from crosschain... Now I am working on an Ultegra Di2 R8000 system and since there are no cables to deal with anymore... I can easily mix and match MTN and Road Shifters and Deraiileurs too without the Tanpan. I may still decide to use a Roadlink...
Hey buddy, gret video! Im running a Ninet BSB with a shimano xt 11-40 cassette, now i wanna change my crankset but i'm kind of lost. Currently running an 46-36 sram rival, but now i have two options, an 50-34 or a 46-36; both sram force. Would you still reccomend the 50-34 + 11-40 cassette? thanks!!
I’m currently running full 105 components with a compact 50-34 up front and an 11-32 on the back. What would I need to do if I want to change the rear cassette to 11-36? Also what cassette would u recommend for that?
So just how many links do you have (do I need) in your chain with this set up? - I already have the 11-40 on a pair of wheels and am going 105 on the groupset excepting a Dura Ace 9000 front derailleur. As more and more frames are coming in with replaceable mech hangers you'd have thought that these could be made to accommodate 11-40 cassettes and circumvent the need for the roadlink...anyone?
Thanks...I saw another video with a Sunrace, a black cassette, with the hangar extender...I saw your update vid. on using that 11/40....good points on why it would be useful, I live on a very hilly Island and have a road bike modified with mtb front cranks, it helps a lot but still challenges me on these short steep ones, So I think this 11/40 idea might be a longer term solution....look forward to seeing more of your videos
Just ordered the 2017 specialised diverge a1 sport which comes with mini/sub-compact cranks (48/32) and an 11-32t cassette on the back... is it possible to replace that with a 11-40t cassette? Or if not, at least a 11-36t cassette? Cheers brother. Greetings from South Wales.
Thanks for the reply. It is a 9 speed rear cassette yes... but the crankset is slightly smaller than compact: it's a 48/32 rather than a 50/34. It would be great if there was a way to put a larger cog than a 32t on the rear (aka 34t, 36t or even a 40t !)...
UKVeganJack You can get a 11-34 9 speed cassette but you won't notice much difference compaired to your 11-32. you can also get a 12-36 9 speed shimano cassette so that would be an option fo you to lower the gearing for the hills.
Yeah, I might consider the latter option you've pointed out, and get a 12-36 rear cassette for climbing the hills. Think it would be pointless only upgrading from 11-32t to a 11-34t; thanks mate.
You mean to make the original 105 chain smaller? I already have the 105 chain that came with the bike. Why do I need to purchase another one? I thought I would have to purchase a longer chain. I was going to ask you which chain to purchase.
I bought an 11-36t and have a 34t in the front I got a smoking deal so I am just going to have to suck it up... 12-15% grades are going to beat me down. I already know... but eh.. I'm doing Pike's Peak his year and never attempted the king of the Colorado hill... But I am now. Nor have I did mountain riding or anything except Lookout mountain road actually and I lived in Clearwater Florida at sea level so IF I am going down, it will have to be to bow to the king and nothing more. Oh sure I'll average 4-5 MPH lol but I am determined to beat that mountain as so many others before me have. I also will be 52 years old when I attempt it. This is going to break my spirit, but I am training like a military soldier started 3 weeks ago. I am talking about ALL 27 miles not the bottom mid or top half I am F#$%^&ng going all the way to the summit! See you there... Come join me perhaps???
So any road chain will work ? or do i need to buy the shimano xt chain ? also how did you measure the correct chain length for the setup ? thanks for the video and please reply as you seem way more knowledgeable than me on this lol
IBE Any Shimano 11 speed chain will work. The chain lenght can differ from bike to bike as the chainstay lenghts can vary slightly. But you may well find a new shimano chain will work fine without removing any links.
ive watched other video on this, and other people recommend that if you are using a 11 speed up with the 11 cassestte, that you will need a spacer. if you put it onto a 10 speed hub you don't. ( as the road and mountain cassettes are dished differently). you didn't mention you fitted a spacer or not. is it needed ?
Thanks for taking time to make these videos for others. Quick question: would you happen to know whether a 114 link chain will fit a sram 11-32 cassette? (am running 50/34) - Since u have an 11-32 fitted, would you tell me how many links are needed. I believe to the sram rival rear derailleur short cage : www.sram.com/sram/road/products/sram-rival-rear-derailleur
Mamadou Amadou a 114 link Sram 10 speed chain will fit a 10 speed 11-32 shimano cassette, i can't say how many links you need as it varies with bike setup chainstay lenght etc.
Thx for your Video. It worked, Ultegra 6800, i used a Shimano M8000 Cassette sprocket 11-40.

SunRace also make a derailleur extension part like the Wolf Tooth. Cheaper too.

New Ultegra long cage can take 11-40 natively with no adapter. I recommend Ultegra RX with a clutch, because the large cassette has a lot of rotational inertia resulting in a kickback if you stop pedaling abruptly. Clutch largely resolves that issue.
Hello Senseamp, did you install 11-40 cassette with RX800 clutch rear derailluer ? And how is the shifting performance ? Did you need roadlink ?
@@vishalkarna3763 Yes, shifting is fine, no need for road link. Make sure chain is long enough for big-big combo.

On a one by I had set up 105 with a 42 teeth chainring and a 11 32 sprocket. It’s lighting fast after breaking it in.
Hi do you think with a single chainring upfront, would a Tiagra 4600 RD + roadlink also clear 40T at the back?
Thanks for the vid. Thought you might be able to help me with a problem. I get chain rubbing my front mech when i use the large chain ring in the front and the smallest cog at the back of a 11-33T cassette. Tried playing around with the limit screws but no give... Any ideas?
Does long cage Shimano derailleurs work with 23-12 cassettes? Because on Shimano website its says min. teeth count is 25 for any long cage derailleurs.
Is the chain CN-HG601-11? Or already used a different one with CSR7000 11-32? Thanks in advance
Excellent video which has inspired me to do the same! 🙂

11-51t cassette with 53-39t crank on road bike?
would there be any issues if I put a 40t cassette if I have a semi compact cranks?
You would have to make sure the new chain you fit is long enough, if not then you may have to add a link or two to get the correct setup.
Do you have problems of chain skipping in the back when in the 50/11? Mine keeps skipping when I shift to the 11t in the rear and 50 in front when using the 11-40t cassette. This doesn't happen running the 11-32. All the other gears run fine only problem I have is in the 50/11.
Have you tried adjusting the rear H limit screw to see if it makes any difference?
Your chain could be too long. Try to shorten it.
How many links is the new chain.. The ultegra chain comes in 116 links and 126 links?
116 links
Im putting a 11-40 on my road bike ultegra setup. I know its going to be a stupid question but what size chain will i need to make it work ???
Duncan Millichip it will depend on what size chainset you are using, start with a full 116 link chain first.
Route the chain around the large sprocket and large chainring, then add 1 more link -according to the legendary Sheldon Brown.
You have done a video with a long cage derailleur and fitting a 11-40 cassette with no road link, has something changed? Great video as usual.
If you are using one of the new style Shimano GS 11 speed rear derailleurs then a roadlink is not required to run the 40 cassette!
@@FreeToCycle Thanks for that - just ordered a 105 R7000 GS 11 speed.
Do you know if this will work with a triple crankset?
Don't see why it wouldn't work, if you could find an 11 speed road Shimano triple crankset.
Question: Can I use the XT 11-speed rear derailleur RD-M8000 SGS Shadow-Plus instead of the 105 rear derailleur? I need the road link then also?
The XT rear derailleur will fit without a roadlink but unless you are using the bike offroad then your better off sticking with the 105 derailleur and link, that and i don't think road shifters are totally compatible with a mountain bike derailleur as the cable pull may be different.
Thanks. Another question: Do you have the medium rear derailleur GS or did you fit a long cage SGS from a other group. Because shimano has is no longe cage in the 105er groupset.
Heinz Rulands GS Medium cage.
Would you still reccomend the 50-34 + 11-40 cassette?
thanks!!
Felipe Antonio Gonzalez Hernandez For road riding i would go with the 50-34 compact.
Free To Cycle and for cx? Thanks !!!
I’m currently running full 105 components with a compact 50-34 up front and an 11-32 on the back. What would I need to do if I want to change the rear cassette to 11-36? Also what cassette would u recommend for that?
Troy Rakes You are better off fitting the 40 cassette because Shimano don't do a 11 speed 11-36 cassette.

the SRAM 11-36 works
Goo
Will this work with a 46\30 crankset? If yes, will it be better or worse or the same?
Thanks for any replies.
For normal road riding a 46/30 with a 40 cassette would be very low geared, fine if you were touring with a heavy bike on hilly terrain though.
How about 11-36 with a single 40t up front, would that work with the short 105 and the bracket lengthener?
Don't see why it wouldn't work, you may need a chain catcher on the front if you are running a single chainring.
which 11-40 cassette to you recommend XT-CS M8000 or the XTR-CS 9000 or there no difference
XT M8000 or SLX M7000 no point in spending more on Dura Ace.
Ray Purse 116 links.
Is switching from a 12x25 to 12x30 going to make a big difference on the hills?
Yes!
Good stuff mate....can this be done with 5700 105 set up/10 speed ?
You could, but to fit a 11-40 10 speed cassette you would have to use a Sunrace cassette as the largest one Shimano do is 11-36 in 10 speed.
Hey There, Cool idea here, I might do the same set-up. Did you keep the same chain or a longer chain? Cheers
The chain is a new full lenght one.
Cheers, Do you think the 11-32 Sram would work properly with Shimano 105 (Long cage derailleur) ?
Bike shop was trying to get me to buy a whole derailleur for just the 34T
What about the chainrings? Some stores in Germany write, that Chainrings must not have more than 14 teeth difference. Is that true?
Shimano compact chainset's are 50/34 so thats 16 teeth difference.
UKVeganJack i presume you meant 52/36 mid compact shimano 11 speed if so then this setup would work fine. shimano don't do a 11-36 11 speed cassette.
UKVeganJack I just checked what gears your bike comes with and no this setup will no fit as your bike only has a 9 speed rear cassette.
Do you use wolftooth
Yes wolftooth road link.
So I'm gonna need 11-40 cassette, road link and a new chain? Mountain bike chain? Or can I just use the one currently on my 105.
Yee Dinosaur fit a new 105 chain that hasn't been cut down.
My 105 is fairly new , I don't know if its cut down tho.
Yee Dinosaur the chain will have been cut down best off purchasing a new 105 chain.
The System Gotcha Alright, thanks!
Thx!
Gixer750pilot There is no spacer fitted on this setup.
The System Gotcha defiantly gonna look into this .
Where are you ? You sound like you are local to me
Thanks for taking time to make these videos for others.
F%^&*ing Colorado where I live is the Mother of all evils for climbs, God dang if I don't need this!
Would this work on a 46/36 setup (caadx 105)?
Henrik Benitez The 11-40 would work fine with your 46/36 chainset.
Free To Cycle Thanks!
