    Thank you for confirming something which no one else has bothered to explain regarding changing from road cassette to mtb cassette. My gravel bike came without the spacer and I thought the freehub was not to spec. Cheers mate.

    Working fine on my Scott Addict to climb north Portugal's 15% gradient hills while saving my knees for when I'm 80. Thank you indeed for showing it was possible and how to do it.
    [ update after over a year running on it: I seldom use the 34/40 combination now, but it gives me confidence to "go anywhere" even in light backpacking mode. Working flawlessly and still loving it ].

    I can confirm this works. I did it a year ago using Ultegra R8000 and a SRAM NX 11-42 cassette. No spacer was needed fitting an 11 speed MTB cassette on a 10 speed road hub.
    I inverted the B Screw to get the extra clearance.
    I did eventually replace the jockey wheels *(from 11s) to a 12 tooth guide and a 14 tooth tensioner to help reduce chain slop.

    Done this last night. R7000 groupset 50-34 on the front and 11-40(CSM-7000) on the back. Same chain length (114 I think) and needed a longer b screw for the 40. Shifting a little worse but I could probs spend longer reindexing. Cheers!

    Been watching this video. I have an old 1990 Giant MTB. I have ordered a complete 105 R7000 groupset. The wheels are 26" so I ordered some 135mm 11s Novatec MTB hubs to rebuild the wheels. Since the hubs are MTB and and cassette will be Sunrace 11-40T MTB , I am just trying to confirm that the R7000 shifters will still shift fine with this setup. Thanks for the great video! Hoping this setup will be nice and smooth to bring new life to my old Giant Yukon.

      @@FreeToCycle thank you for the disappointing news :-) I'm glad you told me as I did not know. trying to upgrade my old giant Yukon has turned out to be very difficult. where I live there are very few steep hills. so I wanted to take this old bike and convert it to a very nice gravel bike and still have good gearing for doing some road riding and for going and doing trail riding. I am in the process of building my road bike and should have it ready in a week or so. That was pretty straightforward on what would fit. I simply ordered the ultegra group set for it and it should work out pretty nice. but taking this mountain bike and converting it has been a challenge to find out what I need to order. if you were going to suggest a good mid-range complete group set that I could put on there to make it very nice, what would you recommend? again thank you very much for your video and especially for answering my questions and help me get going in the right direction

    I just put a 44-28 Samox hollowtech crankset on my Topstone touring bike. With a 12-36 9 speed cassette it works beautifully. Going down to a 26 tooth inner chainring as it will fit. For $14 USA it may be worth a try. That's an 18 tooth chainring gap so it may throw off the ramp and pins function of the outer ring. As a touring bike, big gears are a waste with an upright riding position. Obviously I've lowered the front derailleur matching the large chainring. I'm confident this will fit and at least function with my long cage Sora rd.

    I just installed a Sunrace 11 speed 11-40 cassette on my Rivendell Roadeo. It replaces an 11-36 cassette. I am running a 105 (5800) rear mech with a Sugino 44-32 crankset. I didn't need a "Roadlink". The long "B" screw moved the mech away from the 40t cog enough. Since my chain had less than 100 miles on it, I kept it and amazingly I didn't even have to adjust the length ( well it was only a 4 tooth increase from the previous cassette ). Big/big, small/small will work. Obviously cross chaining but if I do it accidentally at least there won't be any damage done. The key to this setup is the 44 tooth big ring. While this may seem small for a road bike, I can pedal up to 28 to 30 mph without bouncing in the saddle using the 44-11 gear. After that I let gravity and an aero tuck take over. Since I don't race this is perfectly fine. I hit 43 mph this way going down the local big hill. The true test was my first ride with the setup: 44 miles with over 2000 feet of elevation gain. I am supremely happy with the results, keeping a decent cadence on the steepest hills. An additional plus is I have better spacing between the cogs on the new cassette than I did with the previous cassette. I had some 1 tooth jumps on the high end, now the differences are 2 teeth which to me is much more usable.

    • @Saverio49
      @Saverio49 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mavericktechreview1250 Hi Maverick,
      I am using an Ultegra 11 speed front derailleur with no problems at all on MY bike. Since the chaining is smaller, the derailleur has to sit lower on the seat tube to maintain about a 1 -2 mm suggested clearance from the outer ring. This MAY cause the rear of the derailleur to contact the chainstay on certain bike frames , especially when shifting to the inner ring. If that happens, you can try moving the derailleur up just enough to clear the stays. The shifting will still probably be good. Good luck.

    Wolf tooth now offers a new Roadlink called RoadLink DM which replaces the B-Link for all Shimano’s new road derailleurs. 105, 8000 and 9000 series. They recommend it for these bigger cassettes. Even though the new derailleur has that B-Link the DM just repositions the derailleur a little better and helps with running things more smoothly. Also if you use Di2, you can now program the Synchro mode so you would never go into the small small or big big combinations.

    • @Brantel.
      @Brantel. 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dick Tchairdjian I just went through this by installing a 11-40 on my road bike along with replacing the original 105 5800 series with a 105 7000 GS. First I went ahead and used the RoadLink DM with the new 105 but never could get the shifts perfect across the whole range. Ended up removing the RL DM and put the stock Shimano B link back on and it works like a dream. No need for the RL DM.....

    • @Tchairdjian
      @Tchairdjian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Brantel. yeah for 11-40T it may not be needed and I know a lot of people are doing that with 11-40T. But I use the 11-42T and just installed the DM on my bike with Di2 and it's working very well. I'm also thinking of buying a 14-28T Ultegra cassette made for Juniors and taking the 14, 15, 16 and 17T cogs from that cassette to replace the 11, 13, 15, and 17T cogs on my 11-42T. First, I can hardly push the 50-11T gears unless I am on a steep downhill so no big loss, but also I found the jumps from 17 to 15 to 13 to 11 too much of a drop... 14, 15, 16, 17 would be a lot smoother. Second, using the new modified 14-42T cassette will help reduce the Capacity of the total set to one that's closer to the Derailleur's actual capacity of 39. [(50-34) + (42-11)]= 47 ------> [(50-34) + (42-14)]= 44. I may even try and remove the Roadlink and also remove another link from the chain.

In these very steep undulating places you don't need stupid high gearing for the descents, 46/11 is fine as this isn't the Alps....the 11-40 ends up with too wide spacings IMHO and with the B-Screw wound in the shifting always goes sub-optimal...

    I really would have liked to see if the big sprocket / big chainwheel combination would work. I know it's cross chaining but If it didn't work I wouldn't want it on my bike. I may forget I'm in the large ring and in the heat of the climb, looking for lower gears, that's just where I may mistakenly end up. The consequences could rip the derailleur off the bike .

    • @richardggeorge

      Big-Big would rip off derailleur. This is the compromise by not using a hanger extension which only costs $10

    • @jimmyzelski7742
      @jimmyzelski7742 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The only way to make that work would be to cut the chain long enough for it. But then there would be slack in the small/small combination. And in fact, there would be slack in several of the smallest cassette sprockets while in the smallest chainring. That derailleur has a chain wrap capacity of 39t, but the difference between the highest and the lowest gear combinations in the final setup shown in this video is 45 teeth, which exceeds the capacity of the derailleur to wrap chain by 6 teeth. So if the chain was cut that long, then while in the smallest chainring he could only shift into cassette gears with 17 or more teeth without slack in the chain. Roadlink or no roadlink, doesn't matter. A hanger extension doesn't change derailleur chain wrap capacity, it only moves the derailleur further away from the cassette to prevent the upper jockey wheel from contacting the larger cassette sprockets.

      With my setup, running 48/32 2x front and 11/42 rear, there’s barely enough travel to take up the slack in the chain. Not knowing the spread on the 3x - if it’s more than 16 tooth difference from the largest to the smallest? probably not.
      The road link will really only help with clearance for largest cog on the cassette, not with the overall take up.

    if you fit 11-42 can you still use 2x at the front? I run 46/34 on the front.

      Yes you can, but you'll likely lose some cross-chaining gear combinations (which is fine as long as you don't forget that and shift into big/big and rip your derailleur off the bike).

    Hi just checkin, isn't GS a medium cage?

    • @Spoonmeister62
      @Spoonmeister62 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically it is - road RD's only come in short & medium cages, MTB RD's only come in medium (GS) and long (SGS) cages.
      At 10sp and above Shimano RD's are not cross compatible so the GS is the "long" road RD.

    Anyone have info on the need, or not, for a spacer when installing the 11-40?

    • @sherabshenge
      @sherabshenge 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe a 1.85mm spacer is needed.. At least I found this on a bikeshop's page:
      "1.85 mm spacer for the use of 8- and 9-speed road cassettes as well as 8- to 11-speed MTB cassettes at 11-speed road freehub bodies."

    Wow, very solid information. How long/many links is your chain now?
    i'd like to know, when buying a new chain, you can buy 116 links, or longer ...

    • @shoeyn9674
      @shoeyn9674 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I started with a 116 link chain + master link and still cut 4 links off. Small size frame (400mm from rear axle to crank bolt). Front 52/36 Rear 11-40, Shimano 105 R7000.

    I was led to believe that after 9 speeds you couldnt interchange mtb and road without risk of mis shifting. Si thr cassetter work as long as you don't mix derailleurs as the pull ratio is different l. Thats a massive cassette are you planning on loading up for a tour? Did you get it to go up to the 40 in the big ring? I kniw it cross chaining just curious.

    • @FreeToCycle
      @FreeToCycle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glenny you can go upto the 40 in the large chainring no problem. A friend of mine was curious to know if it would work as he's in his late sixties and goes touring all over europe so it would be useful for him to have fitted.

      @@FreeToCycle good to know just in case you had a front derailleur issue. I havent tried the new road derailleurs only got it on my mtb. Inhad a 34 on my 6800 long cage with a dropper worked a treat. I also tried a 5800 with a short cage no dropper with a 32 cass and worked fine. Truth be known i like the 5800 and 5700 feel more than the 6800 . My mate run 11 spd with an old 5700 some say it wont work but ive tested it and it does. I think it put a slim spacer on it like half the thickness.

    Looks like what works for Shimano doesn’t work for sram. I can’t get my apex to work properly. Goatlink doesn’t help

  • @James-zu1ij

    The chain is sized for 11t at the back. In other words same chain size. It could be a an 11-23 no difference. Correct me if im wrong.

    • @FreeToCycle
      @FreeToCycle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are wrong!! The chain on a 11-40 setup will be alot longer than if you were running a 11-25 cassette, the largest sprocket is 15 teeth bigger on a 40 cassette than a 11-25, therefore if you had the same size chain and fitted a 40 cassette on the rear then changed up the cassette you run the risk of snapping the dearilleur off!!

      @@FreeToCycle I watched the video again. This is how I size my chain. I.e small/small then take up the minimum slack. At no point does this method see the other cogs. It just happens to fit because it's within limits.

    • @FreeToCycle
      @FreeToCycle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry James got my wires crossed there, yes you can size the chain like you said basically small/small then takeout the slack and it should be fine on all the gears!!
