Ryan, once you’ve sanded the birch ply or veneered mdf you should apply a sanding sealer. I fitted an oak veneered top to an alcove cabinet recently, I normally use Osmo but it takes so long to dry and needs a few coats so this time I applied Chestnut sanding sealer from Axminster, it dried in minutes, I denibbed it with p800 and gave it a coat of clear wax. The finish was incredible, just like glass. It’s also great for sealing mdf edges
Bona Natural is an awesome product. It really does keep the wood looking natural and you don’t get that yellow color. I did my floors with it and had some extra and plan on using it for some kitchen cabinets. Great tips. Rolling is a great option for small projects.
First time watching your videos, not be the last though, subscribed & a thumbs up.
Brilliant video,very informative.
I do apologise... sometimes comments get missed or I don't get notifications...
Thank you very much!
I'm glad you like the vids, I try and be a bit different from the rest!
Cheers ryan 👍👍👍
Great video. Thx for taking the time - once again learning loads.
Thanks for the nice comment!
I'm glad its been of help and thanks for watching!
Great. For me the best thing about this is, there is no spray, that means so much less prep, PPE, mess and cleanup, and overall hassle. I like to shine a laser level to check surfaces, you get a pretty decent gauge on the smoothness because the laser bounces off every imperfection. Thanks for sharing your process!
Nice finish, I learned a lot also. I had no idea just the weight of the roller results in adequate pressure. It also seems I tend to apply way to much product.
Thank you!
Yep this is what gives me best results! I used to do everything by hand years back and kept trying new techniques.
Yes, don't over do it with the product, just enough to cover as you can always do more coats 👍
Nice clear and concise informative video. Could you tell me whether you think this would be appropriate for an oak staircase. Looking for something that would give me a cleanable finish
Hi thank you!
Yes I think so. Go through their product and they may have any even tougher version of this lacquer which is designed for floors. Saying that this one is ridiculously tough still
Thanks Ryan really useful video as I have not got space or the cash for sprayers and excess paint. I have always used the rota rollers and the eggshell F&B paints to get my finishes. Should I have finished with a lacquer coat such as the Bona product or is that just for plain wood finishes ?
Thank you!
I'm not too sure how this would react over a paint finish, I don't think you need to.
This is more for wood finishes I'd say 👍
Hi there great video. Whats the difference between bona mega and bona mega one please? Cheers
Have you tried odies oil as a finish on plywood
I haven't, I've got an old skool mentality where I just stick with what I know and used 🤣.
I'm happy with osmo though, I've not had any reason to try other just yet 😁
Thanks for that. Are you still able to get hold of birch ply at a reasonable price?
I popped into my local timber merchants and they said that birch ply practically doubled in price overnight when the Russia Ukraine war began. He said a B/BB sheet now costs £160+vat!
Hi Ryan, great video.
Could you get the same sort of finish with Paint and rollers?
Thanks mate!
Yes if I was painting without a sprayer I'd use exactly the same technique as the video.
I used to do it this way but mainly with a 9 inch roller.
Only Downside is that you may need up to 4 coats to get full coverage with such a fine roller.
You could always apply with a small to medium pile 9 inch rag roller, then go over with the gloss roller if you can alot to do
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop thanks mate
Awesome - what grade birch ply do you use?
Thanks!
To be honest I'm not too sure on these. I struggled to get 25mm so had to buy it at a different supplier
what is the plywood before you started your laquering , because it looks "white" , hard to tell exactly ..... but it seems a bit "white" as if primed or something ...... Is it just "Birch right off the shelf plywood" ??? So you are basically going with a natural clearcoat look ???? Or has it been primed ???? It doesn't look "natural" to me , looks white before you clearcoated
Hi, I'm sure it was just plain birch ply. I never put 2 different coats on so it would have been plain birch ply first 👍
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop okay I understand , sometimes Birch can look a bit "white" at an angle , and I'm sure especially when videod .....
@shure46 ahh yes it can can't it 👍
But like you said, it may be the camera that makes it look more white 👍😊
Hi , which grade of ply do you use ? nice work .
B/bb I believe
Is that a foam roller or a flocked roller? I have found the foam one causes a lot of bubbles on the finish.
It's a foam roller, as long as you go slowly on the final passes you will be fine 👍
Can you lacquer walls
I guess it depends on what material you are covering?
Should have advertised a no budget way of achieving a DIY finish to get more views m8.
NOT "LACQUER." In the U..S.A.
Diy bs.
Huh?
