I will never forget Allan Houston. I remember the excitement and sheer motivating force he was in the early - mid 90's. I know people viewed him as the underdog or the quiet star, but in my view, he was everything clutch that he needed to be in the playoffs, especially in the 98-99 lockout season. Right after MJs retirement in 98, Pat Riley called him the best 2-guard in the league. This was during about a two year stretch before Kobe came into his own, AI played full-time at the 2 and Vince Carter and T-Mac made a name for themselves. Crazy that his knee problems seemed to get him out of nowhere. He also always seemed to be able to step up in the playoffs (except for 2001)
It sucked that T-Mac never was on any great teams. He stepped up, but nobody else did. I though for sure he and Ming would have gone further, but a couple bad breaks, then Mings and McGrady’s injuries all cost him. For a time in McGrady’s days, in the early 2000’s, there was a 3 year stretch where he outplayed Kobe, he just didn’t have the team Success

H20 was one of my favorite players growing up in NY. That 1999 finals run will always be special. But in retrospect, something always held him back from being a true superstar. As the video brought up, he could have 30 points one night then single digits the next. His bag was limited - mostly a jump shooter that got streakier later in his career, and he wasn't a killer alpha dog type so if the shot wasn't falling, he would get passive and defer. Moreover he wasn't a good enough defender or playmaker who could affect the game in other ways if he couldn't score. Still, had a great work ethic and A+ character guy, but just one of those players who could average 20 ppg on a bad team but would be a 2nd or 3rd option on a good one.
Before I read any other comments, I wanted to comment. Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting together this video!!! Allan Houston is my favorite player and the player I tried to model my game after when I first got into basketball. I started watching the Knicks the season they lost to the Raptors in the first round. Houston was coming into his prime and my biggest takeaway from watching the video, was from college and in his NBA career, he was so reliable and hardly missed any games...until very late in his career and unfortunately right after he signed his contract. What I never understood though as criticisms of him, are some of the points you made in the video. After he signed the contract, he was playing at the PEAK of his career and the Knicks wanted to make him the #1 option. If he did not get hurt, there was no reason to believe he would not continue to get better. Thank you for stating this. It was a lot of money and even as my favorite player, he may not be a #1 player, but a great #2 or #3 option. His professionalism and hard work are other reasons why he got that contract. The fact that he retired too, followed through on his word, and tried multiple times to come back, I wish more players were like Allan Houston. His timeline just never matched up with Ewings. The early 2000’s version of Alan Houston paired with the early 90s version of Patrick Ewing definitely wins a championship. H20 was much more consistent and a better shooter than Starks. Starks was a better defender and was more of a heart and energy player, but Houston was the better player at his peak.

I would love to see you do some defensive monsters like Michael Cooper (HOW IS HE NOT IN THE HALL???), Ben Wallace, and one of my favorites -Alvin Robertson. He could score efficiently and was a 4 time all star, 6 time all NBA defensive team and a 3 time steals champ before he even turned 30. He also had 7 straight seasons of averaging over 2.6 steals a game while averaging over five rebounds a game, 6 assists a game while never averaging under 13 points a game in any of those seasons. While also winning DPOY AND Most Improved player award in '85-'86. Super underrated among shooting guards and is never talked about as injuries derailed his career too soon. Not to mention playing in the same era as a PRIME MJ and a prime Sidney Moncrief (who is another guy you should DEFINITELY do) who was considered by many the BEST defender in the league among guards. But I've heard some all time greats say he was one of the strongest, most feared, and most respected defenders in the league. Some guys were even afraid of him. In fact he and Sidney Moncrief's accomplishments are nearly identical and they accomplished all their accolades before their 30s and injuries cut both their careers short. But only Sidney is in the HOF. Though Sid was a slightly better scorer. Please do either of those two guys as nobody does these types of videos better. Great research and presentation brother. Houston was a great number 2 player. The knicks had him as their number 1 for years. Even when he wasn’t (Patrick). Patrick screwed the team getting involved in management decisions, that DA finger roll in the pacer’s series, and virtually retiring in the paint with that turnaround jumper and never going to the hole anymore. Don’t come for me. I’m still a Ewing fan to this day. Had 3 pairs of his adidas and his warmup jacket.

I’m a die hard Jazz fan, and people forget the impact Mark Eaton had on the game. Sure, he wasn’t a scorer at all. Had no offensive game. But his defense was top notch. 2 time DPOY, 3rd in all time blocks, and holds the NBA all time records for most blocks in a season and highest season average. He had a very short career that lasted 10 years due to back and knee problems. How he got started was crazy to. After not receiving any offers out of high school he went on to be a car mechanic. It was there where he got recognized and was asked to join UCLA. I grew up watching Eaton and those young Jazz teams. I met Eaton when I was 4yrs old, got his autograph, attended a couple of his camps, and a year prior to his death, saw him again at a store, where he recognized me, had a small chat, shook hands and off he went. He will always be my most favorite player of all time.
