- Allan Houston had an incredible career the university of Tennessee, leaving the Volunteers as the best player in program history and arguably the best player in SEC history. He would be drafted to the NBA by the Detroit Pistons who were transitioning out of their bad boy era, where he would spend 3 seasons, eventually becoming a sidekick to a young Grant Hill. Then in 1996, he would sign with the New York Knicks where he would have an incredible run and become one of the least talked about legends in Knicks history as his sweet shooting and durability served the Knicks for years first with an aging Patrick Ewing and an acquired Latrell Sprewell to help the Knicks make an improbably 1999 Finals run. Then when Ewing was traded, Houston and Sprewell became a great duo in New York for a few more years, keeping them relevant. Unfortunately, knee injuries that he had spent years playing through finally became too much and after an incredibly durable decade of play, he broke down in his final 2 years, retiring unexpectedly after the 2005 season. But in 2001 he had signed a massive extension with the Knicks which is considered the inspiration for the amnesty clause, due to Houston’s injuries rendering him incapable of playing, but still owed a lot of money, but it’s unfair that this is what he’s most synonymous with as the “Allan Houston rule” was never even used on Allan Houston. So, today we’re going to look at the positive side of his underrated career.

I will never forget Allan Houston. I remember the excitement and sheer motivating force he was in the early - mid 90's. I know people viewed him as the underdog or the quiet star, but in my view, he was everything clutch that he needed to be in the playoffs, especially in the 98-99 lockout season. Thanks, Allan Houston, for everything.
Definitely an underrated Knicks star. Often a "what could have been" conversation piece and unjustly so.
Right after MJs retirement in 98, Pat Riley called him the best 2-guard in the league. This was during about a two year stretch before Kobe came into his own, AI played full-time at the 2 and Vince Carter and T-Mac made a name for themselves. Crazy that his knee problems seemed to get him out of nowhere. He also always seemed to be able to step up in the playoffs (except for 2001)
It sucked that T-Mac never was on any great teams. He stepped up, but nobody else did. I though for sure he and Ming would have gone further, but a couple bad breaks, then Mings and McGrady’s injuries all cost him. For a time in McGrady’s days, in the early 2000’s, there was a 3 year stretch where he outplayed Kobe, he just didn’t have the team

Frank layden, a rookie gm for the knicks and not so shrewd, outbid themselves for Allan with that 100mil. No other team would have made him that kind of an offer. Allan was one of my favorite players and glad he stayed within the organisation.

Houston was one of the best 3pt shooters I ever saw - he would be a monster these days.
I would love to see you do some defensive monsters like Michael Cooper (HOW IS HE NOT IN THE HALL???), Ben Wallace, and one of my favorites -Alvin Robertson. He could score efficiently and was a 4 time all star, 6 time all NBA defensive team and a 3 time steals champ before he even turned 30. He also had 7 straight seasons of averaging over 2.6 steals a game while averaging over five rebounds a game, 6 assists a game while never averaging under 13 points a game in any of those seasons. While also winning DPOY AND Most Improved player award in '85-'86. Super underrated among shooting guards and is never talked about as injuries derailed his career too soon. Not to mention playing in the same era as a PRIME MJ and a prime Sidney Moncrief (who is another guy you should DEFINITELY do) who was considered by many the BEST defender in the league among guards. But I've heard some all time greats say he was one of the strongest, most feared, and most respected defenders in the league. Some guys were even afraid of him. In fact he and Sidney Moncrief's accomplishments are nearly identical and they accomplished all their accolades before their 30s and injuries cut both their careers short. But only Sidney is in the HOF. Though Sid was a slightly better scorer. Please do either of those two guys as nobody does these types of videos better. Great research and presentation brother. H20 was one of my favorite players growing up in NY. That 1999 finals run will always be special. But in retrospect, something always held him back from being a true superstar. As the video brought up, he could have 30 points one night then single digits the next. His bag was limited - mostly a jump shooter that got streakier later in his career, and he wasn't a killer alpha dog type so if the shot wasn't falling, he would get passive and defer. Moreover he wasn't a good enough defender or playmaker who could affect the game in other ways if he couldn't score. Still, had a great work ethic and A+ character guy, but just one of those players who could average 20 ppg on a bad team but would be a 2nd or 3rd option on a good one.

Love the series. Keep up the good work. There are so many players from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s you can do. A couple suggestions would be Tom Chambers, Kevin Johnson, Dan Majerle, Darrell Griffith, Rickey Green, etc. Here’s another one. I’m a die hard Jazz fan, and people forget the impact Mark Eaton had on the game. Sure, he wasn’t a scorer at all. Had no offensive game. But his defense was top notch. 2 time DPOY, 3rd in all time blocks, and holds the NBA all time records for most blocks in a season and highest season average. He had a very short career that lasted 10 years due to back and knee problems. How he got started was crazy to. After not receiving any offers out of high school he went on to be a car mechanic. It was there where he got recognized and was asked to join UCLA. I grew up watching Eaton and those young Jazz teams. I met Eaton when I was 4yrs old, got his autograph, attended a couple of his camps, and a year prior to his death, saw him again at a store, where he recognized me, had a small chat, shook hands and off he went. He will always be my most favorite player of all time.

Houston was a great number 2 player. The knicks had him as their number 1 for years. Even when he wasn’t (Patrick). Patrick screwed the team getting involved in management decisions, that DA finger roll in the pacer’s series, and virtually retiring in the paint with that turnaround jumper and never going to the hole anymore.
Don’t come for me. I’m still a Ewing fan to this day. Had 3 pairs of his adidas and his warmup jacket.

His timeline just never matched up with Ewings. The early 2000’s version of Alan Houston paired with the early 90s version of Patrick Ewing definitely wins a championship. H20 was much more consistent and a better shooter than Starks. Starks was a better defender and was more of a heart and energy player, but Houston was the better player at his peak.
He was a poilshed player even in college. 48% from the field as a shooting guard is crazy. And 55% in the nba. Top notch efficiency.
Hang on I got to say one thing I live in East Tennessee and don't get me wrong loved Allan Houston I really did but I would have to argue that Bernard King was better as a volunteer then Allan Houston was see I live in Johnson City which has a little college called ETSU I don't remember exactly what year it was it was early 90s but we had a player at ETSU by the name of Keith Jennings or if they called him Mr. Jennings it was only like 55 or 5/6 something like that short guy UT when they had Allan Houston when you're in when I say they beat them it was pretty one-sided like I was shocked I want to say that we actually made the dance that year and UT didn't I might be wrong about that part so don't quote me on that one but yeah I actually have to say the greatest basketball UT player of all time is Bernard King also shoutout to Kevin Nash you played basketball UT as well and yes that Kevin Nash
