- He was a standout at the University of Central Michigan in the mid 80s, yet his name was unknown outside of the state. He quietly put together a college career that was good enough to get him a starting spot on Team USA in 1988. Then he would be booed by Suns fans when Phoenix made him their first round pick. But over the next 7 years, he won their hearts through his hard nosed play on both ends of the ball as a slasher and finisher in the beginning and then a great 3 point shooter near the end. He was a great defender and hustle player who would always put his body on the line which led to a lot of success in Phoenix alongside Kevin Johnson and Tom Chambers and later on, Charles Barkley. After a great stretch in Phoenix he spent a year in Cleveland before embracing a 3 and D role on the great Miami Heat Teams of the late 90s. He never won a title, but he also only missed the playoffs once, in his final season. Thunder Dan Majerle was a player that was so easy to root for, and the epitome of a player you hated to play against, but loved having on your team.

Majerle was a sharpshooter & good defender, gets too much criticism for his job guarding Jordan in 93 finals.

Guarding MJ in the 93 finals Thunder Dan did the best job he could at that time,when you watch videos from those finals MJ was always 2 steps ahead of Majerie on his drives to the hoop. That's why they switched up and put Kevin Johnson on MJ during certain times of a game,he had the foot speed to stop MJ's penetrations,but,MJ could shoot over Kevin or post him up.

Dan Majerle is one of a kind type of player who embrace his role as a member of the Phoenix Suns. If he was playing in the NBA today, he would be averaging 20 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals per game. He will kill the league with his 3-point shooting ability and his hustle as a great defender. He played during Jordan era, so the Suns are regretting for ever booing him.

I remember when the Suns traded him for Hot Rod Williams because they felt they needed a big to get a chip. To this day it is the worst trade in team history or at least at the very top of the list.
Yup. That's a big reason why (along with injuries) they dropped off from 62, 56 and 59 wins from 1993-95 down to 41 in 1996. He fit perfectly with that team.

Yea Suns fans booed at the time he was drafted, but ask any Suns fan who their favorite Suns player of all time is and I can guarantee that at least 90 percent of fans will say Thunder Dan.

The Bulls Netflix series did Majerle bad. People forget he was guarding the greatest player of all time at his (Jordan's) peak physical abilities.
Series is about MJs ego trip, so no love for Dan, but this video gives him justice.
Man I used to be a fan of "Thunder Dan" and those Suns teams. They had some really good players in that era.

As a Lakers fan, I used to hate seeing him come off the bench because he was so scrappy and disruptive defensively. He was a problem.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. I HATED Dan Majerle! Larry Bird, Dan Majerle, Justin Verlander, and Alex Bregman are athletes who I HATE the most! But, here's why: Dan Majerle KILLED the Sonics and Blazers. Just KILLED the Blazers. He hit 7/10 3-Pointers in Game 1 vs. Portland in 1994-95. As much as I HATE Dan Majerle, Tyrone Corbin and Rick Fox, for CHURCH league, my game most resembled them: In my prime, I was a 16 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block per game small forward.
