This video was produced before the 2023 Knicks and Heat met in the 2nd round. Purely coincidental.
Also, correction: Riley's return to the Garden was December 19, 1995; the Heat lost 89-70. He returned the next year on December 3, 1996 and won 99-75.
What's the BEST NBA rivalry ever (apart from Celtics-Lakers)? Comment below, and be sure to check out our other videos:

Knicks vs heat is my all time favorite rivalry. Personally i think it the greatest rivalry in NBA history. It just epitomized the old school 90's basketball. Quick note: If you notice, There was only one game where a team scored more than 100 points in any of their playoff games against each other from 97-00. That's unheard of in today's NBA. Game 5 between Knicks and heat from the 99 playoffs is my all time favorite game. I think it's one of the greatest games in Nba history. Bar none !!!

I loved watching this series as a kid. Both teams were so equally-matched, it was like they were mirror versions of each other. Then you also had the real-life tensions with Pat Riley and the Van Gundy brothers.
I really enjoyed the Suns-Spurs rivalry of the 2000's and it might be one to do a future video on. Suns-Spurs was interesting because they were pretty much the exact opposite of one another, with the Spurs being slow and defensive-minded, while the Suns were fast and focused on offense. The Suns finally sweeping the Spurs in 2010 after losing to them so many times was such an incredible moment for me.

@Seba 6 Not at all, not basketball wise or the relationship between the two teams. Closest we had to the 90's was Randle and Zeller almost escalating into something and that wasn't even close to what we saw in the 90's. Plus teams showing love to each after the series, in other words the current Knicks Heat teams don't hate each other. Congrats, Heat are definitely the better team this year.

What a rivalry! As a Heat fan, those games were excruciating, especially the one with the Allan Houston shot that seemed to bounce and stay in the air forever. Those were some good Heat teams too. The Knicks had the better of the Heat in those years. Ultimately, Riley and the Heat won in the long run with the Heat franchise winning three championships. Still, those years bring back painful memories for me as a Heat fan. Lol! I did read the book, Blood in the Garden about the 90's Knicks. Great book! This recent Heat-Knicks series did bring back some nostalgia at first, but the game and the league is not the same... Great video by the way.

I thought that his unfortunate back problems, is what caused Charlotte to trade him away. Funny that the template for these 90's rivalries was the Riley's Knicks - which was a carry over from the Piston's - and the Bulls. The Bulls had that triangle offense, and though physicals, didn't rely on brute force, but the triad of Jordan, Pippen and Rodman (and Grant before him). Interestingly, until the Spurs won the title in 99's, the only type of teams that won titles from 91-98' where the Bulls and Rockets. The Bulls and Rockets had a similar style. The super physical Riley Knicks and Heat where never able to get over the hump and win a championship. Had Riley, actually followed the Piston blueprint, he would have balanced out the roster with good scorers and shooters to go with their tough brand of basketball. The Pistons where tough, dirty and physical, but they actually had a lot of talented players and scores, such as Thomas, Dumars, Vinnie Johnson, and Aguire. Had Riley gotten more tough scorers, like Vinnie Johnson and Dumars, to go with their tough defense, the Knicks might have won a title. However, they were heavy laden with enforcers, but lacked dynamic scorers to win a championship. As a result they had to rely on someone like Starks, who was a streaky shooter, rather then rotate in a stable shooting guard off the bench, like Vinnie Johnson. A couple Vinnie Johnson/Dumar-type players, could have helped the Knicks get past the Rockets, and maybe even the Bulls. Cool time of basketball though! Those Bulls-Knicks series were intense and fun to watch!
