No doubt on the vinegar but my longest hottest cycle drains fully after the pre-wash. I'd add this and the baking soda after this so it's in the main cycle and has longer than 10 minutes to work.
That's why commercial cleaning products have a wax cap that will melt during the cycle. Also, modern dishwashers do the prewash using retained (cold) rinse water from previous cycle to save on water and energy.
Fun fact: this wont work due to the prewash cycle. Isntead, run the dishwasher for about 10 minutes (or until you hear the prewash cycle draining), then interrupt it and add the vinegar.
Or just use the very cheap specialty made products that skips all the work. And maybe clean your dishwasher more than once every few years And maybe use the right amount of soap and stop using pods. The powder stuff lasts longer, is cheaper, and is the only type of dishwasher soap that can use both bleach and enzymes instead of just enzymes.

that sounds like a good idea given your circumstance

Well said. I place vinegar in a cup & add baking soda in the detergent compartment so it gets released after pre wash.
Interesting... I like your idea
Be careful, as this may damage your specific dishwasher. Read your manual before you try.
