- My second ever 4:54 on original hardware and new WR for console! This is for the people who try to say that my previous Any% WRs on emulator / keyboard "don't count", so now it is undeniable that I have the WR, regardless of if people like emulator / keyboard or not. This unfortunately would've been 4:54.798 if it wasn't for losing a frame in water, but regardless, I am very happy to have achieved this. I might continue to push this lower in the future, but for now, I am fully satisfied with this run! Also, sorry about the low quality recording with the taven cam, I now have a capture card set up, so future console runs will be recorded in higher quality than this.

I'm pretty sure he just practices a lot. Like most things in life, what people like to attribute to "natural talent" is really just thousands of hours of hard work.
It's like that video with Billy Mitchell and the fat pony tail guy pretending to do a board switch but this video is of an actaul hero and chad doing legit awesome things.

I think he said that because to set yourself up for FPG in 8-3 you have to jump on a specific frame, and he knew it was the right frame because of how much he practices it

they need the timer so they know what to do on Bowser's hammers without having to wait on reaction time
@@psymar Bowser's pattern changes every frame, looking at the timer wouldn't be reliable for that. Niftski has a very good idea of what speed he played 8-4 because of tons of experience, and from there you can see what the hammer bro and bowser fireball do to narrow down the rest. You'd pretty much play bowser the same way even without prior knowledge though.

as an 80s kid who was always kind of bothered the WR was on keyboard, to see Niftski casually demonstrate he can easily do it on a NES has made things right in the world
This is how I've felt about it. Never doubted the ability, just never felt right seeing it done on hardware that wasn't original (or at least not on controller like NES Classic, etc.). Now I am satisfied LOL

Hey to give some extra context, his run on OG hardware would still rank 2nd place on the leaderboards, meaning weather if its emulator or OG hardware he is still number 1.

The keyboard gives you more precise and consistent inputs versus older NES hardware and controllers. Glad that you can play well, too, on a NES controller, too, but there is a reason why many top speed run categories require original hardware and games.
This is funny considering that this guy Niftski has only ever done the double falling fast accel in the first room of 8-4 using a controller.
What does that tell you that the de facto GOAT at keyboard SMB speedrunning, and also the greatest SMB speedrunner of all time, has to resort to switching to controller for the first room? Lekukie, the only other guy to ever do a perfect 8-4 besides Nifstki, actually said that keyboard is harder to use than controller in one of his vids and even detailed why. Top-level runner Miniland in a Reddit thread about the first 4:54 also said the same thing, that keyboard is harder to use.
The best runners, i.e. the people who actually know wtf they're talking about, all seem to be saying the opposite of what controller purists like you say don't they?
@@GlassOnion23 Why do other speedruns ban emulation and restrict what controllers to use? He's the only record holder doing it with a keyboard.
@@titowrestling Are you talking about speedruns of other games? If so, then the answer is in your own question. They're other games where there are disparities in performance that favors the keyboard. If you're talking about SMB, then no. Keyboard is completely legal in this game.
The fact that Niftski is the only (?) top-level runner to use keyboard weakens your claim no? If keyboard is truly broken this game, why wouldn't every other speedrunner gravitate towards it? Speedrunners spend thousands to tens of thousands of attempts trying to get world record times. If there's something this simple that can improve their chances, why wouldn't they all use it?
And as I already said, top level runners have already come out and said that controller is easier for the hardest tricks in the game. Simultaneous left-right inputs are banned in SMB. So there's always chance during those extremely quick, one frame window, left to right taps for left and right to be inputted simultaneously on keyboards, which amounts to a nothing input, thus killing a run. This is physically impossible to do for NES controllers.
