Worked in a residential treatment facility for kids. For most of them, the parents were the actual problem.
poor kid he's suffering from survivors guilt he survived the fire Derick didn't so he feels guilty that maybe he should have been the one to die not Derick or if he had done something maybe just maybe Derick would still be here and he wouldn't be having this problem but his parent's aren't doing him or themselves any favors by pretending that what happened to Derick never actually happened they want to completely erase the night of the fire and their son dying never happened which isn't healthy for them either it's not healthy for all three of them to pretend that DERICK never existed
Everyone deals with loss different.
This is going to sound terrible. I'm a retired vet. 30-50 year old age range. My current therapist recommends I act like my parents never existed. It works. A lot. You stop thinking about the trigger, often the pain goes away. So no. I think his coping mechanism was probably healthy for some people.
You don't need to lay a hand on someone to abuse them

PTSD and feeling that it’s your fault is devastating. I tried to protect the people I cared about when I was in my trauma situation. It’s so hard to remember, but also too scary to forget. The details and gaps can be fuzzy at times. But in the moment, you’re scared out of your mind. And you’re easily convinced that you are the reason that everything ends in shambles. It’s hard to forget, but too painful to remember.

Well, he’s damn good at it! A job’s a job, and he does a great job! lol
Perfect example of not everyone deserves to be parents and that you don’t need to physically abuse your child to cause irreparable damage. I mean, what a pair. A father who cares more about his own biases and embarrassment about mental health than the health of the only son he has left and a mother who enables his emotional and psychological abuse of their son, describing her husband as “a simple man” after watching him abuse their son to the point of further injury. They absolutely FAILED their son and should be ashamed of themselves, not him!
That poor boy I feel so sorry for him I know what it's like to lose a dad but losing a sibling must've been so painful and must've scared him for life 🤕🤕🤕

It's called Functional Neurologic Disorder (FND) nowdays cuz it's not always caused by trauma. Also most doctors don't even know much at all about FND so it's rare to get a diagnosis. Most doctors will simply tell you it's all in your head and send you to a therapist. Nobody gets specialized VR equipment. FND is also a lifetime diagnosis. Treatment can provide remission but there is no cure. But I'm glad for the representation 😁
What's the difference between FND and Conversion Disorder?

@@Avatargirl1667 conversion disorder is understood as a psychologic illness. It got renamed when doctors started to understand that it's not just a psychologic problem. It is both a psychologic and neurologic problem that can be caused by both psychologic and physiologic illness or injury. Conversion disorder is a throwaway diagnosis. When it's not this this and this, it's conversion disorder. Now they know how it works so it's a diagnosis in itself.
As someone that is in the process of being diagnosed with a conversion disorder and we don’t know the trigger, this really hit home. I hope one day this type of tech exists. I want to get better so bad.

As someone who has functional neurological disorder, formerly known as conversion disorder, I have been told it's all in my head more times than I can count. It's a brain body disconnect it's not all in the person's head
No, with proper therapy, you could be treated. By definition, it is all in your head, but being told that makes it worse. If you have a good therapist to help you work through your trauma, you could get better.
People will never understand the depths of trauma...and those who go through it are downplayed!

I never had a chance to think through my trauma. I I've talked through it with y therapist, and dad since my mom wont let me talk about it, and I had a similar experience. Talking through trauma is unbelievably hard, but it helps you to process it. It makes it get just the tinyest bit less scary. You might not be able to forget it, but remembering it gets easier.
I have conversion disorder, unlike Evan my symptoms are psychogenic non - epileptic seizures. It took me 3 years to get this diagnosis and I felt like Evan when he said he wasn't lying

Whats with people's stigma against seeing a therapist?
Because back in the old days, if you went to a shrink it meant you were mentally not perfect, so you kept quiet about it. Now a days, people wear their problems on their sleeve and are praised for it
Seeing a therapist was thought of as someone's dark secret, a shame to be hidden from others. People would think (and say) that you're crazy, possibly even dangerous. As ridiculous as that attitude sounds, it still exists in some families and communities.
I don't know, my sister has it too. I love my therapist and cried when I learned he retired.
Parents and children don't like looking weak in front of public schools kids and public city people and in front of public neighborhood . Going to See a Therapist is a sign of weakness and to be shamed and should be outcast out of the public schools and public life in the city. When it really not.

I have conversion disorder from severe long term trauma and mine manifests in seizures like movements. I have been told by my doctors that I’m lying about the disorder and that I’m faking my seizures. It’s nice to hear a doctor not think down upon the disorder even if it’s just a show
This one is so sad. It literally wasn’t his fault and he DID try to save his brother but was too late; in the chaos of the trauma, his mind took his inability to have possibly saved his brother and buried the experience in a simpler, differently tragic scenario, which unfortunately led to all other kinds of complications as a result of trying to bury the details of the memories of that loss.
Undirectly the father was abusive psychologic abuse is as dangerous as physicly abuse

Guilt can really take a toll on people.
They would know if it was psychosomatic by running tests on him that would confirm the reason for paralysis when there was no apparent injury sustained to even cause it. That would have been picked up sooner that is was mental trauma he endured during the fire and loosing his brother. I also hate how people wanna brush trauma under the rug like it never happened. My parents where like that too I didn’t loose a sibling but other stuff happened. It was never spoke about after tell years later and substance abuse rules my life. I went into therapy again but was more open to it

Wow, this is really stupid. They already fixed the problem. Just attach a battery and some lights to a leg brace and tell him he'll be able to walk more and more each day. Then replace it with some stick on things that buzz occasionally. After a year or two tell him exercise has strengthened his legs and neural connections and he can walk without them.
He would only end up paralyzed again because the problem is not physical but psychological. It's better to fix the source of the problem than to treat symptoms.

Uhhh this is a real thing that can happen to people due to trauma, look it up.
That's not what this is saying at however I do agree it's ass completely unrealistic, one thing I hate about loving this show and others is the fact the doctors are incompetent, break the law constantly and a bunch of fake/unrealistic medical problems happen.

There were cases that have similarities, like Emancipation, where a patient feels guilty for "killing" her brother, and Holding On, where the patient who's ironically named Derrick hears his dead brothers voice that he doesn't want to get rid of since his parents never talk about him.

This reminds me of the story in the Bible where Jesus heals the man with paralyzed legs. The first thing He says to the man is that his sins are forgiven, and then after explaining His authority to forgive sins, He tells the man to “take up his bed and walk”. I don’t know if it’s the same kind of situation, but if the man in the Bible was crippled from past guilt, it’s no surprise that He could be healed by the One who could truly wipe away his sins.
