This is the reason I hate seeing people completely trash Kirk Hammet. He is truly an amazing guitar player. He got far beyond the reach of his goals as a player. Not to mention the incredible commercial success. Yet many people just think he's garbage and that mustaine is better. Yes, Dave is a musical mastermind. @@Chris741113 it's almost like he's always so fucking rusty, also such a nervous vibrato for somebody whos been playing for so long in front of multi-thousand crowds. Lack of practice cant be justified by the commercial success of your band and Kirk definitely hasnt truly practiced in a long time. Also that tone is fucking horrendous, I cant even imagine him and his sound engineer listening to that piece of tinny garbage and thinking "alright, thatll do". Mesas in the background, and yet such a thin, wispy tone. James did a video like this in practically the same conditions when it comes to the equipment and his tone sounded almighty, just like the mesa should sound if adjusted correctly. Well, I absolutely hate Kirk's playing. Its uninspired, generic, awfully unclean, technically and melodically inferior to basically all metal lead players including Mustaine (who's never been that good anyways), and he's got one of the absolute worst vibrato and bending techniques Ive ever seen. Maybe he was something back in the day, though still his playing in the 80s and 90s isnt my jam at all. I think if more people would stop to use Kirk's playing as their ultimate guitar goal, we would be in a better place musically. Kirk, just fucking grab that guitar besides your concerts and practice. Money won't bring your talent back
The sheer contrast between him speaking on camera and him playing the guitar is astonishing. He's such a shy and nervous guy when speaking but he's one of the most talented guitarists on this planet.
Kirk talking about practicing hard to not mess it up. How big a man must you have to be to admit you are only human? Really appreciate his humility here.
He is indeed very talented, but ir doesn't mean that all the music he made is good. I personally find that great part of the Metallica solos sound almost the same.

Kirk is the best fit for Metallica and yes he is a better fit than Dave mustaine for Metallica.also remember and remind yourself that guitar playing is not a race,a competition or anything even remotely resembling this.music is completely subjective and everyone hears something completely different when they listen to the exact same song. listen to "metallica at nimes 2009" or many of the shows in the mid to late 80's and you will understand COMPLETELY what im talking about.
What he played here was horrific, crazy bad. Especially from around the 5 min mark. If you claim otherwise you are either lying to yourself or don't play guitar...Or can't sing or play any instrument at all.
+Trey Wanvig If you like Yngwie, you should check Jason Beckers older stuff like perpetual burn or something.. sweep picked arpeggios so fast and precisely played that even Yngwie could not keep up.. In my opinion Yngwie and Becker are almost like athletes rather than musicians but impressive anyway..
I love Kirk’s energy and vibe. For someone with that level of fame he seems (to a random guy who doesn’t know him) nothing but genuine. Been listening to him since I was 9yo (between AJfA and the Black Album). One of my favorite musicians ever. The f’n king shredder!
I was 14 years old. I knew Metallica existed, but wasn't really interested yet. I heard Enter Sandman on the radio. When Kirk's solo came in, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Just as he was captivated by Hendrix, I was captivated by him. When the song was over, I immediately called my best friend. I asked him if he had ever heard this. I knew then - and it became my mission - I had to learn how to do that. I get people's complaints about Kirk. But I always remind people that he played some of the most legendary licks and solos in metal history and has worked with the hardest working band over the last 40 years. He didn't do that by accident. He did that by a lot of hard work and dedication. He was and still is an inspiration to me.
It was also the enter Sandown solo for me, because it sounded weird when the entire song was heavy and chuggy and this solo was melodic and somewhat soulful
iRaptus Gaming also Master of puppets and blackened..... Enough said. I mean come on, these guys are in their 50s still rocking harder than I ever could.
+chris fox yea man after 3 songs of them in a row i feel like i did a workout the whole day come on how are these guys still performing live in front of millions of people and especially kirk with his solo's. long live the greatest!
After doing epic albums as Kill, Ride, Master, Justice and Black....he can do whatever he wants if he wants to fail in concert, to abuse of Wha pedal, getting slower, not being the most technical virtuoso guy...who cares , he already has his place in Metal and Rock History...a true legend
i love how passionate he is about his music, even as simple as a riff he created as a 16 year old kid brings a tear to his eye because it really means something to him, thats how music should be it shouldnt be about who can shred the fastest or who is the best its about releasing emotions and thoughts through your instrument and having your audience relate to the music.
such a really humble & delicate guy, you would never think that he was responsible for some of the hardest Riffs and sledgehammer guitar sounds on the planet, he is like a Heavy Metal Gentleman!! Love your work, Kirk!!!
I thought Metallica was too loud of a music when I was kid and now that I’m 50 it’s actually very soothing so I started playing more of Metallica on guitar The more I play it the more I’m at ease. Thank you Kirk for your inspiration

I like how Kirk is basically the same innocent guy he was since he started with Metallica and hasn't really changed, as opposed to James and Lars who have gone through quite a lot of change in personality and appearance over time, James especially. I mean thats not exactly a bad thing, but I just love how true Kirk is to himself
that's what makes me respect him not only has a musicians but a person more because he has that innocence of a child that Never got to live his child hood life but that made him an honest person. he's very down to earth and kind to his fans.
The best part of ride the lightning is the fade to black outro solo... That solo is better than every solo I heard except the comfortably numb solo. The guitar just cries on both of those songs.
M M listen to the Master of Puppets riff tapes. Kirk wrote a good amount of them. Riffs for Battery, MOP, Disposable Heroes, The Thing That Should Not Be & other riffs and songs 🤘🏼
Dude is such a genuine guy. I think it's particularly endearing that he's such a big Hendrix fan because his shy/goofy/humble personality is so much like his hero! Rock on, Kirk! You rule, dude.
I love how humble and down to earth Kirk is, like he’s a fan rather than the musician. Very likeable guy and lead guitarist in the greatest band of all time.
My sister bought me a "How to Play in the Style of Metallica" VHS. I broke it from rewinding and fast forwarding and pausing it a thousand times. I owe my life to that tape.
I got to meet Kirk Hammett after a show In Atlanta,Georgia on March 28th 1992...! was 23 yrs old at the time!! He was so down to earth....such a super nice guy, and he was just being himself....I remember being in this room along with 100 other fans waiting to meet Metallica!! We waited like 3 hrs for them to come out! Each hour that went by, people was leaving! When they finally came out,30 fans got to interact with everyone except Lars.I took a page out of a magazine for them to sign and Kirk drawed devil horns coming out of his head and signed his name.....I got that page framed up.....hanging in my living room to this day.....I'm 53 now!! And still rocking !!!
Listen to the solos on blackened or ride the lightning. Not just a bunch of scales played as fast as possible. Wonderful, soulful solos filled with emotion... but also absolute face melters. How many guitarists can do that? And people say he sucks because he fumbles a note now and then, pfft. Get outta here.
Look, he was one of my biggest inspirations, but he does more than "fumble a note". He got absolutely sloppy and just kinda wings his own solos to the point that they're not even the same thing anymore. It's not only sloppy but often out of key. I don't understand why, because he should understand that. - Saddest thing as a fan is when you surpass the person who inspired you, because yes, I do now play better than him today (or the last 15-20 years). I took his younger self as an inspiration, which played better than his older self, so naturally the bar is higher. Also, you mentioned the older solos: What he did since Black Album was nothing like that. His style completely changed throughout the '90s and 2000s. And I'm not saying that it was in a bad way. Although, most solos he put on "Magnetic" and "Hardwired"... they're not that interesting or filled with soul or emotion most of the time.
I don't get some people on youtube sometimes. No matter what Metallica video you go on, the comments are always filled by people nit picking how he plays guitar. He doesn't claim to be the "greatest" guitar player of all time or anything. He just plays guitar in a band because he enjoys it, and it pays the bills. For me there is no need to bag on the guy constantly. Just my 2 cents.
Majority of time, the people who are nit picking on how others play, speak, dress, or drive, are very insecure and immature. I agree with you I've noticed that too - people like that spend more time criticizing instead of picking up a guitar, or at least enjoy the video. I suggest that you ignore them, because if you continue reading their comments it will drive you nuts. It's my experience.
when you get 'big', you get haters, simple as that. I know there's probably a lot of people out there that hate on Kirk because they can play faster and/or cleaner than him and therefore they deserve as much success as him. I love Metallica to the death, but they are very fortunate or "lucky", if you prefer. I mean, if it wasn't any one of them, it would've been some other group of talented musicians (there are many of them out there, after all).
"I mean there was another time where I found myself thinking, "Holy shit, I'm with my high school fantasy." And that was when I had gone to see Rush, and then after the show I was hanging out with Alex Lifeson, and we were just hanging out, drinking wine, talking about guitars, and I thought, "Yeah, I really made it (laughs). I'm really here, right now, hanging out with Alex Lifeson backstage, drinking wine (thumbs up). Doesn't get much better than that."" Um, I now respect Kirk on a whole new level. Thanks for sharing that awesome tale mate. Love it!
Kirk Hammett is just a naturally like-able guy! He's very soft spoken, and kid like. He may be older, but he is a big kid inside. I play guitar, and Kirk Hammett is one of the reasons I picked one up!
Kirk has to be my favorite rockstar mainly because of his attitude and humility! And don’t forget that he’s written some amazing riffs and has created lots of memorable solos as well. I just really love how he has no ego and I feel like he keeps Metallica grounded and stable! 🔥
Kirk is what I always want to play with in a band. He's humble, supportive, filling in for James when necessary (James often does his little things). He's discipline and calm. Kirk may not be a guitarist everybody wants, but he's definitely the perfect guitarist MetallicA needs.
Having Kirk in my band... I'd love hanging out with him, writing the music, having beers and talking about music, life and everything in between, he seems like the most wonderful person to be around. But I'd dread playing live with him. I've heard/seen too many live shows where he gets so lost in his solos that he's half a bar behind the rest of the band, or just generally off, and I'm just not sure I'd have the nerves to play with someone like that again, I've had my share of live shows with amateurs (including myself back in the day) who mess up at the worst times, throwing everyone else in the band off the beat. I picked up the guitar because of Metallica and Kirk was my favorite guitar player for many years, and I loved his solos on the early records, so it saddens me that he seems to have stopped practicing somewhere along the years.
Don’t have to be drug rattled to have anxiety. I talk like this and yes it’s frustrating. It’s hard to get the words out. You stammer, stutter, it’s hard. SO much to say, trying to figure out how to say it all.
+Josh Martins Haha yeah I know! But I've always liked him for that, kind of an insecure dude compared to James, even when they talk you can tell. He still rips it though.
+SubCulture MEDIA I think both.... from his nature he is a really humble guy and honest as well. But I think the years with lars and james with their Uberegos made him question for anything he plays. imagine showing Lars a riff and he is just the arsehole he always used to be (which is one of the reasons why metallica is where theband is) or james with his insane downpicking and tough well timed riffs.... I would be insecure all the time
What a nice guy. You can really see his passion when he talks about guitar playing. Reminds me of Pavarotti when he talked about how much he loved singing :)
To everyone says Kirk sucks; Lets see you still shred Puppets solo perfectly.. Or Seek and Destroy solo as fast.. Or anything from the track Fight Fire With Fire at the age that he is now? Bet you'll have a pretty hard fucking time at it, too. The dude's old, yeah. However, who wrote those solo's on Puppets and Ride the lightning and Kill em' all to begin with? Kirk. So, sure.. Sit back in your little comfy chair and bash at this legend. At least he's known to be one of the heavy metal icons in the biggest metal band that ever lived. Sit back.. And despair.
Kick Bam I'm 100% sure that a baby could'nt even figure out how to use a wah in the first place, and the baby could probably spell a lot better than you
Just a fantastic genuine individual. That near-tear he shed about the creeping death lick....that says it all. Almost brought a tear to my eye frankly.
You know I hear a lot of Lars and Kirk aren’t good at their respective instruments and it really irritates me. I’ve been playing music for 25 years, I can play drums, guitar, keys, and bass. Lars and Kirk are by far from being the Best, but they are great musicians and outstanding songwriters. Lars holds the songs together with his drums. You have to drum those songs right or they can’t be played even close to how they are suppose to sound with a band. You can’t just throw any old beat in there and expect the band to just go with it. It has to be Lars’s beat layout he created for the song or it doesn’t work. It’s the same with Kirk. His solos and backing riffs are needed to play Metallica right and make the songs sound like they are supposed to. Metallica was the music I started playing, and there’s a reason for that. Plus in my opinion if your a good respectable musician you just simply shouldn’t put your fellow musicians down. If your not a musician, like them or don’t like them that’s your opinion ,Just Don’t try to act like you know what you are talking about when it comes to a musicians skill.
You're totaly right dude and i have to say that these solos are fricking hard man: Dyers Eve, Disposable Heroes, Shortest Straw, Fight Fire With Fire. Yeah he's not even close to being a virtuoso but i think people tend to forget that he actually can shred and in his own style. But very good comment, rock on 🤘
Being a technical player is cool but if you don’t know how to write songs, it’s quite possible that a very limited amount of people will listen to you.
My parents had a live DVD set of Metallica and they were watching it one day and I (8 years old at the time) walked up to the TV just wide eyed watching Kirk play the fade to black solo. The solo ended and I said "I wanna play like THAT guy!" My parents then bought me a cheap little guitar and amp and I've been playing since. Thanks for the inspiration Kirk, you will forever be my favorite guitarist of all time.
Love him so much. Kirk is honestly so relatable, just listening to him speak, listening to him stutter, then play the guitar and become a completely different person. It's so inspiring for me

But he fits Megadeth just as Kirk fits Metallica
really, I never came across anything negative about him...ppl seem to love him, not only for his talent but for who he is a person, a very nice down to earth guy, very smart
@@leeohmoon231 look around on the internet, there are plenty of hateful things against Kirk. While there are some said as jokes, some also intent to hurt him. A joke I've heard of him is that he abuses the wah pedal and his solos sound the same, among other things
I'm a huge fan of Metallica but what he played at 5.04 to around 5.30 was disharmonic MESS and sounded completely horrific. It's not possible you or anybody else found it to be great or good. Be honest to yourself.
@@Chris741113 no one is perfect, no one...ppl abuse others on the net yet they did nothing even close to what Kirk did and achieved ;) anyways ppl are cruel about the new guy as well (calling him ape)as they hate Lars drumming, always something

He wrote some catchy stuff but musically it is not really anything too original and most of his solos sound the same.

You think these people have much more going for their lives besides arguments that go nowhere and will never solve anything?
GenderPranks As a small personal motto 'Don't like how that person plays guitar? Then stop bitching and learn to play better than them'
Majority of time, the people who are nit picking on how others play, speak, dress, or drive, are very insecure and immature.

Hammett reminds me of Michael Jackson - too fragile for this harsh world, resulting in beautiful works of art and expression.

+Josh Martins Haha yeah I know! But I've always liked him for that, kind of an insecure dude compared to James, even when they talk you can tell. He still rips it though.
+Aaron Ryan yeah, when hes on stage he looks like hes imitating the moves of the big stars... But he IS one of the big stars...
+GFG Nickname_not_chosen INsecure? Or just humble? :)
+SubCulture MEDIA Excellent correction! Humble yes.
Jerry Smith ok Jerry
To everyone says Kirk sucks;
Lets see you still shred Puppets solo perfectly..
Sit back.. And despair.
ofc logicaly u get better after years but ok....sure gimme wah and baby can play it plus fast playing dosent mean better :)
Kick Bam I'm 100% sure that a baby could'nt even figure out how to use a wah in the first place, and the baby could probably spell a lot better than you
Sudhish Raghupatruni someone dosent know what is metaphore or internet grammar
I know just trying to be realistic
And most people use spell check
Kirk just seems like a really good guy and kind soul. And I know he was a great friend to Cliff, not just his bandmate. He's a sensitive soul.
Dude's softcore and hardcore at the same time
Just a fantastic genuine individual.
But very good comment, rock on 🤘
Everything you said, I’ve tried to explain to the haters. They are not the best ability wise, but their songwriting works for their sound and it fits
Kirk is one of my favourite guitarists ever. I couldn’t care less what people say about him
Being a technical player is cool but if you don’t know how to write songs, it’s quite possible that a very limited amount of people will listen to you.
We
This guy pretty much wrote all the signature riffs for Metallica, and is given so little creative leverage, yet never really complains.
It's so inspiring for me
he is so humble. He is so sorted and grounded. He is just happy to be playing guitar and that he made it. No stupid competition with anyone, no animosity or jealousy. I really admire his temperament., something all of us should adobt. There is no pretension there. way to go kirk. Big fan
My very first concert I saw them when I was like 5 during the damaged justice tour in ‘89.
They were a major influence that got me into playing guitar. Prob the first riff I learned was the intro to enter sandman. I am very grateful for their music throughout the years.
