Kirk has always seemed like a very genuine and down to earth kind of guy from the very start and didn’t let Metallica’s massive success go to his head. His laid back and sweet nature is a breath of fresh air amongst so many others who let fame corrupt their core self.

I met Kirk in 97 w my mom and 2 brothers when we were children (7, 9, and 11 yrs old). He was very kind and generous. He signed all my brother's CD covers and gave my other brother a guitar pick.

Don't let this fool you. Kirk minds, but he doesn't care about anything other than his own music. He doesn't pretend to be anything more than he really is. A great player and a great band mate. He doesn't care what you or anyone thinks. All Kirk cares about is play well.

I got to meet Kirk Hammett after a show In Atlanta,Georgia on March 28th 1992...! was 23 yrs old at the time!! He was so down to earth....such a super nice guy, and he was just being himself....I remember being in this room along with 100 other fans waiting to meet Metallica!! We waited like 3 hrs for them to come out! Each hour that went by, people was leaving! When they finally came out,30 fans got to interact with everyone except Lars.I took a page out of a magazine for them to sign and Kirk drawed devil horns coming out of his head and signed his name.....I got that page framed up.....hanging in my living room to this day.....I'm 53 now!! And still rocking !!!

This is the reason I hate seeing people completely trash Kirk Hammet. He is truly an amazing guitar player. He got far beyond the reach of his goals as a player. Not to mention the incredible commercial success. Yet many people just think he's garbage and that mustaine is better. Yes, Dave is a musical mastermind. But he fits Megadeth just as Kirk fits Metallica

I'm a huge fan of Metallica but what he played at 5.04 to around 5.30 was disharmonic MESS and sounded completely horrific. It's not possible you or anybody else found it to be great or good. Be honest to yourself.

@@Chris741113 it's almost like he's always so fucking rusty, also such a nervous vibrato for somebody whos been playing for so long in front of multi-thousand crowds. Lack of practice cant be justified by the commercial success of your band and Kirk definitely hasnt truly practiced in a long time. Also that tone is fucking horrendous, I cant even imagine him and his sound engineer listening to that piece of tinny garbage and thinking "alright, thatll do". Mesas in the background, and yet such a thin, wispy tone. James did a video like this in practically the same conditions when it comes to the equipment and his tone sounded almighty, just like the mesa should sound if adjusted correctly. Well, I absolutely hate Kirk's playing. Its uninspired, generic, awfully unclean, technically and melodically inferior to basically all metal lead players including Mustaine (who's never been that good anyways), and he's got one of the absolute worst vibrato and bending techniques Ive ever seen. Maybe he was something back in the day, though still his playing in the 80s and 90s isnt my jam at all. I think if more people would stop to use Kirk's playing as their ultimate guitar goal, we would be in a better place musically. Kirk, just fucking grab that guitar besides your concerts and practice. Money won't bring your talent back
This guy pretty much wrote all the signature riffs for Metallica, and is given so little creative leverage, yet never really complains.
He wrote Creeping Death riff at 16, I am 33 and trying to play A-D-E chords fluently. The reasons for throwing the guitar away never ends.
i love how passionate he is about his music, even as simple as a riff he created as a 16 year old kid brings a tear to his eye because it really means something to him, thats how music should be it shouldnt be about who can shred the fastest or who is the best its about releasing emotions and thoughts through your instrument and having your audience relate to the music.

I don't get some people on youtube sometimes. No matter what Metallica video you go on, the comments are always filled by people nit picking how he plays guitar. He doesn't claim to be the "greatest" guitar player of all time or anything. He just plays guitar in a band because he enjoys it, and it pays the bills. Majority of time, the people who are nit picking on how others play, speak, dress, or drive, are very insecure and immature. I agree with you I've noticed that too - people like that spend more time criticizing instead of picking up a guitar, or at least enjoy the video. when you get 'big', you get haters, simple as that. I know there's probably a lot of people out there that hate on Kirk because they can play faster and/or cleaner than him and therefore they deserve as much success as him. I love Metallica to the death, but they are very fortunate or "lucky", if you prefer. I mean, if it wasn't any one of them, it would've been some other group of talented musicians (there are many of them out there, after all).
I think he accepts that. He's said many times that he was just in the right places at the right times. That goes for any art though.
Kirk just seems like a really good guy and kind soul. And I know he was a great friend to Cliff, not just his bandmate. He's a sensitive soul.

My very first concert I saw them when I was like 5 during the damaged justice tour in ‘89.
They were a major influence that got me into playing guitar. Prob the first riff I learned was the intro to enter sandman. I am very grateful for their music throughout the years.

The road is well know by those who already put their steps on it. Every guitarrist/musician had hard times and we have the best memories of 6 strings (or probably less) speaking loud. Thank you, Kirk, for this moment sharing with us your view about the guitar and music.

Joe satriani summed it up well when he said "kirk had to invent a way of playing over riffs that were in a style nobody had done solos over before". Its easy for todays guitarist to learn phrigian dominant and shred away but nobody had done that before when kirk was doing it.
Bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest had already set the framework and put together the musical vocabularly for this style of music. All Metallica did (like many other bands did in 1981 and 82 already) was kick up the tempo and aggression. They are remembered for it because they had enough popularity/mainstream success to become a reference point and representative for their style. Just like how bands such as Cannibal Corpse are famous for early death metal but they too did not invent.
I think your undermining the significance of Metallica's music. I could say we wouldnt have Iron Maiden and Judas Priest if it wasnt for Jimi Hendrix and maybe we wouldnt have had Hendrix if it wasnt for .... etc etc. The point is Metallica progressed just as all music and styles do in time. Your simply undermining a significant step in musical evolution that was made by Metallica to make it appear that Metallica is less than a worthy musical influence. Megadeth did the exact same thing you described yet they are not as famous as metallica. Why? Ill let you figure it out.

Metalica riffts to be spacific, where an Icon for not only me personally but where a benchmark of our culture comming to a level of singularity which became a responsabuility to be part of. you probly never herd of our sound but but in case you have my first band was LEVEL from Oakland. I just watched this guitar center video of you and was compelled to write this to you. I just wanted to let you know how much youre playing and realness ment to me. personally, and as I said beffore to our culture. watching and listening to you talk about Creeping Death brings back those uncontrolable feelings that led me to not only dreaming of playing like that but influencing others myself and what that means to me even now . Those evil riffts pointed the way like a becon for heavyness and profound aspect of aproach to all the writing from that point on . From the first time I saw you at rock on brodway with Raven which was my first time facing the sheer impacked of metalica from the back of a club with my arms crossed beer in one hand. (you know the stance) but after the first song which i beleive was Creeping Death with the spagety western intro. I was perminantly reduced to a human miniture drawing board as far as music was concernned . I eventually hunted down guitarists that played the way I did because I wasnt good enuph to sing and play at the same time and nobody wanted to sing or could sing .anyway . I love how he says the Jimi Hendrix movie made him learn to play because for me it was watching cunning stunts at age 13. I was watching him and it just felt like magic. I HAD to play. There was no question so I learned piano so my parents would know I was serious. My first guitar was a black squire "the closest I could find online to kirks" and I literally covered that fretboard in blood. I loved it sooo much I even took it in the bathroom with me. There was NO place I didn't take my guitar with me. It was my best friend and only form of expression. I could never imagine not being able to play after that. It's been 20 years now and I still feel that way! Dear guitar, I LOVE YOU!

You don't really pay attention to your surroundings while playing. But since people don't know that, they blame it on drugs.

Im a few years younger than Kirk, I grew up in mid teens finding Metal music and Metallica after all the years of bands Ive listened to I still come back to them as my favorite metal band as they and Judas Priest just struck me as the most unique sound and had particular richness to their sound that no one else had.
I like some Maiden songs I'd rank up there as my faves also, and Sabbath, DIO, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd but they are like basics of that genre that everyone is going to like.

After doing epic albums as Kill, Ride, Master, Justice and Black....he can do whatever he wants if he wants to fail in concert, to abuse of Wha pedal, getting slower, not being the most technical virtuoso guy...who cares , he already has his place in Metal and Rock History...a true legend
