what i love about that episode is it's clear the writers have liberal leanings yet they portray both sides fairly respectfully - they don't just satirise politics for the sake of being edgy, they satirise the narcissistic people in life like Dennis who have no real convictions and take advantage of politics for their own personal gain. I think a huge part of it is that despite having a loyal cult fanbase for years, It's Always Sunny never became the huge cultural phenomenon that shows like South Park or Rick and Morty did. Not just in terms of marketing, but in basic cultural relevance. It would be almost unheard of that an average person would know nothing about South Park or Rick and Morty, but knowing nothing about It's Always Sunny wouldn't be nearly as surprising.
It’s Always Sunny has always had a STRONG moral code on what they will and will not do or joke about on the show. They’ve said before, if it’s not funny it won’t be on the show. You can joke about offensive things and still make it funny, and it’s genius how they’ve been doing it now for so many years.
The show writers understand that it’s okay to makes jokes about sensitive topics AS LONG AS the joke is being made at the expense of the OFFENDER, and NOT at the victim/OFFENDEE.

While admittedly not one of the best seasons, I quite liked season 14 and considered it an improvement over season 13. It had a couple of really funny episodes like The Gang Gets Romantic And Paddy’s has a Jumper
I think most think these seasons are lacking is because they are building up what’s gonna come later. They have I think 2 seasons left till they have to do a finale. They’ve brought up several times about kids and a change in their formula, so it’s definitely coming. This is their Last act before they either die, or live the rest of their lives in absolute misery.
I've only recently stumbled into this show and wondered the same thing. Near as I could figure it was that they essentially never win and that, while you could misread them (and I'm certain there are people out there who idolize them), the writing is so sharp and nuanced and provoking that you have to know it is a parody of people like this, not praise for them.

People blame cancel culture because they aren't funny. South Park and It's always sunny are perfect examples as to how you can still make jokes on and about taboo topics and it be totally fine. They punch up (as they say in the comedy world), they don't glorify the bad people or things, in fact it's the opposite. They use the humor to bring light to the topics and situations by making the jokes about the bad people and who don't understand the issues and the offensive actions they take. Like in the gang gets racist. The jokes are never at minority groups who are the ones who suffer from racism. It's about the ignorant people who chose not to see/understand racism and all that comes along with it. This is why someone like Dave Chappelle (most recent example) is getting cancelled. Because in his latest standup he punches down. He makes fun of a marginalized group, the LGBTQ community. Specific the trans community. He makes them the bud of the jokes, thus not only showing his lack of understanding of the subject, but also empowering the ignorant people who chose not to understand the issues.

Because its satirical and the cast has often, outside of the show, shown that they support several progressive causes. ViciousKisses, that’s because the initial joke probably doesn’t come from a place of empathy or understanding. Nobody can just come on stage and make a joke about a serious topic. As self-defeating as it is, comedians have to take them seriously because when they don’t they demonstrate the same qualities the Gang does - ignorance and callousness, which is a quick way to get fired from _any_ profession.
To be fair what about Aziz Ansari, his talent can be seen in master of none and he’s been cancelled (unfairly I may add)

It’s always Sunny is satire. It poses as satire. Every time they “cross the line” it’s a satirical critique of those that actually cross the line seriously. It avoids cancel culture because of that, because it’s known that it’s insulting the behaviour that gets you “cancelled”. Same as South Park and Tropic Thunder
I didn't like the episode in the latest season where they they fought about women having short haircuts(abortions). Not because Im pro choice or pro life, I just wish they talked about abortions straight up.
They already kind of did that back in season one of the show. It was a real good episode
Funny thing is that at this point in the show even Dee hates women, Yet tries to defend them just to prove a point to the gang. It’s not because she believes in what woman do with their bodies, but compels herself to follow their trend cause she has no individuality at this point.

Considering Mac and Frank are actually quite progressive in real life, this may apply, whereas probably doesn't when applied to "apolitical" celebrities. While admittedly not one of the best seasons, I quite liked season 14 and considered it an improvement over season 13. It had a couple of really funny episodes like The Gang Gets Romantic And Paddy’s has a Jumper

I think most think these seasons are lacking is because they are building up what’s gonna come later. They have I think 2 seasons left till they have to do a finale. They’ve brought up several times about kids and a change in their formula, so it’s definitely coming. This is their Last act before they either die, or live the rest of their lives in absolute misery.
True, season 14 was better than 13, I liked the global warming episode, everyone gets made fun of. Plus they did quarantine before it was a thing.

I've only recently stumbled into this show and wondered the same thing. Near as I could figure it was that they essentially never win and that, while you could misread them (and I'm certain there are people out there who idolize them), the writing is so sharp and nuanced and provoking that you have to know it is a parody of people like this, not praise for them.
How does It's always sunny avoid cancel culture? Because their 'problematic' humor is very obviously a critique and exploration of assholery, not to be taken seriously. This persona has been built throughout the years to the strengthen their parodys.
The faces of South Park and Always Sunny are Cartman and Frank because every great group has a funny fat guy. This was explained in season 3 of Sunny. Nothing sexual
The trick is to ignore them, cater to your audience not your critics.

People blame cancel culture because they aren't funny. South Park and It's always sunny are perfect examples as to how you can still make jokes on and about taboo topics and it be totally fine.
They punch up (as they say in the comedy world), they don't glorify the bad people or things, in fact it's the opposite. They use the humor to bring light to the topics and situations by making the jokes about the bad people and who don't understand the issues and the offensive actions they take.
Like in the gang gets racist. The jokes are never at minority groups who are the ones who suffer from racism. It's about the ignorant people who chose not to see/understand racism and all that comes along with it.
This is why someone like Dave Chappelle (most recent example) is getting cancelled. Because in his latest standup he punches down. He makes fun of a marginalized group, the LGBTQ community. Specific the trans community. He makes them the bud of the jokes, thus not only showing his lack of understanding of the subject, but also empowering the ignorant people who chose not to understand the issues.
I literally always say “watch Always Sunny in the same way you watch South Park. It’s fucked up, and intentionally fucked up. It’s offensive for the sake to be offensive, you’re gonna be a offended by it and that’s the entire point”
