- Let's talk about someone who might be one of my favorite characters in not just It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but in all of media, Charlie Kelly, king of the rats. It doesn't matter if he's confronting things about his past, being rejected by the only woman he's ever really loved, or bashing some rats. Charlie seems to be able to take just about anything that life throws at him in stride. So let's talk about how tragic his life really is and how he's managed to get through it.

I feel the newer seasons of it's always sunny (particularly noticed it watching season 15) have become much more on the nose. I don't know if there's a discussion there just interests me.
I want to know how many people are killed in BoJack Horseman, all seasons. Mostly because I'm bored.

Dee used to be a really good person but she hit her head in a roller skating accident, causing her to be cranky forever.

I think Charlie and Mac's relationship might deserve it's own section. It's overlooked, but the two of them might be the genuine best friendship (by default) in the show.
I love how the waitress is married to Charlie in real life.
And Dennis is married to the pharmacist from the Dennis system
And Mac is married to Sweet Dee (bird)
And Frank is married to all of us
I always thought the dayman represented Mac. The characters main traits are karate and friendship, he was who Charlie spent his days with and he was Charlie’s first choice to play the dayman
You can see how he’s got a better chance of being a better person than anyone else from the gang. He’s not a great person himself but compared to the rest of the gang he’s way better.
He kidnapped a writer, trapped a little person, and was perfectly fine torturing and/or killing them.

Honestly I think that Charlie’s mother is by far one of the most evil people on the show considering that uncle jack did or at least tried to abuse him and his mother knew about it
Think about the Troll Toll song. She didn’t just know about it.
When you consider how she reacted when she thought Charlie had been molested by the teacher in season one I don’t think she did know about it

@@braydencoversbeatles4029i think she's just so deep in denial. I'm pretty sure she even says somewhere in the series "Oh Jack would never" when directly confronted about him being a predator. She's kind of comes across as just as/more guliable as/than Charlie.
The troll line can still fit - maybe she got paid so someone could "hang out" or "play" with him and she just... Didn't question it much.
Charlie was pretty normal at the start of the show. However after the steroids episode when he takes dozens of headshots with boards, bottles etc and does some off-brand drugs that make him crazy and angry, similar to roid rage, he becomes unstable and goes heavily into glue and paint. My theory is that all those blows to the head mixed with the drugs caused brain damage. So all the huffing he does now is adding to it. Which is why he has a prominent learning disability.
And yes I think his uncle molested him. Look at the episode where the McPoyles accuse the coach of molestation. He mentions that he was molested and we find out it wasn't from the coach. However when he's asked to show where he was touched on the doll he looks at his uncle, who is overly into the sex part of the molestation trauma.
Charlie had been huffing for yrs prior though, it doesn't help, but it existed before the head trauma. The head trauma is a very interesting take
They talk about this on the sunny podcast, they pretty much said that obviously he has brain damage but there wasn’t just one event that “changed” his character, it’s just more and more brain damage
All I’m going to say is that the season 15 finale made me sob uncontrollably. The only other time when the show made me that sad is Mac coming out to his dad at the end of the season 13 finale

@@treytonjohnson1 I don't, it doesn't fit the show for me. If this was another sitcom then sure but always sunny even if it had heartwarming moments were very light. Like the gang throwing charlie a birthday party. They never had this whole performance about a character moment. That's what made them good characters to me, they knew their faults and knew the truth but pretend they don't to keep up appearances. Not even to mention the fact that frank isn't Charlie's dad anymore and mac became a complete docile character

Perfect video… When I first saw Charlie break down next to his dead father, I cried with him because of how tragic his life was before and him finally getting closure only for it to be taken away is just to much .. Charlie Day really sold that scene 👏🏼
That scene with Charlie breaking down over his dads body had me ugly crying.
Charlie’s a pretty awful person himself, and, to be fair. He’s toxic to his friends, the Waitress, and his acquaintances on many occasions, such as in “Charlie Rules the World.” Dennis, Dee, Frank, and Mac are quite toxic to him on many occasions, too. However, it definitely is a recurring theme that Charlie is the closest thing to a morality pet that the rest of the Gang has.
Frank genuinely loves and values Charlie the most of the Gang. He’s the nicest to him.
Dennis will still insult him and get angry with him, but he actually puts in a genuine effort to not lose his shit with Charlie, whereas with everyone else, he really doesn’t care. He argues with Charlie far less than he does with Dee, Frank, or Mac when they hang out together, and he doesn’t fuck with him nearly as much as he does with Dee, Frank, or Mac. When it’s just the two of them hanging out, Dennis usually gets along with him pretty well. Far better than he does with Frank, Mac, and Dee when it’s just them hanging out.
Mac gets angry with Charlie quite a bit, but they’ve known each other since childhood.
When it’s just the two of them, Dee and Charlie often get along pretty well as a team, until or unless Dee takes it too far.
In one episode, when they notice Charlie’s been having a rough day, and Frank tells them it’s his birthday, Dennis, Dee, and Mac all come together to actually do something nice for him.
Dennis also takes care to try and calm Charlie down when he's having meltdowns, and sometimes shows concern for his physical state, which is unusual for the gang.
To add on to Mac - Mac is very bossy with Charlie but I think that's just kind of their dynamic since he sort of plays his "older brother figure" and oftentimes, he's like that to prevent Charlie from doing something stupid (like pulling him away from people, taking away a drink from him etc). He's also pretty much the most patient in the gang when it comes to explaining things to Charlie, and trying to understand him. (Bonus, that one adorable clip when Charlie reads something on the door, and Mac is like "good job bud, almost got it right" but genuinely.)
I really would like a follow up episode to the one where Charlie dumped Ruby and now she has this obsession with him just like how Charlie had with the Waitress, it’d be a nice twist

Though the bloopers aren't canon, I find them interesting when thinking about Charlie's childhood. Specifically, the bloopers from the recession episode, from the scene where Charlie, Bonnie, and Jack are sitting around the table-- I don't know, I think it's interesting.

maaaaan shiet, i didn’t finish season 15 because i didn’t really like it, but it’s super super disappointing to find out that frank isn’t charlie’s real father, even if that is the point of the story arc :(

The Ireland episodes have some absolutely hysterical moments. Would recommend finishing it!
It's a SUPER weak season. But there are some funny moments. The show isn't as good as it used to be but I think that people are generally aware of that.
Wouldn’t be ironic that the waitress shows up pregnant or already has Franks baby from season 13 the wade boggs 2 episode. Charlie would end up raising franks bastard like he did with Dee and Dennis.

Despite the premise and subject matter of the show, they have some REALLY great heartbreaking tearjerking moments... When Mac's dance scene first aired I was literally balling my eyes out. A grown-ass hardened Army Veteran, just pouring tears. I could not believe how accurately they portrayed the struggle of a closeted homosexual man(I'm not gay but I could clearly understand the message they were putting out). Towards the end I was becoming happy for him. I started thinking "this is so nice, now maybe his father and others will understand him".... Then...
Then his father gets up and storms out of the room.... The rollercoaster never ends. I got emotional whiplash..

I love how in comparison to everyone else in the gang, Charlie is like an angel.

One ting though, if his mum is a Kelly, Uncle Jack is also a Kelly... How the f*** is his dad, Shelley, a Kelly? It would make more sense if they married in Ireland and for some reason he took her last name... But they never married. Inconsistency makes a lot of sense after 15 seasons, but as a TV writer myself I want to think there is a logical reasoning behind it, so if anyone knows a bit more😅

That scene in season 15 and the dance in Mac Finds His Pride will forever make me sob. Somehow these assholes from Philly will never fail to make me feel such deep emotion. Amazing video.

Everyone in the gang had to rough growing up. Mac had a father who was a criminal and was oblivious at what was wrong, like when he thought breaking into people’s houses and stealing presents was normal. Dennis and Dee had a father who took joy in seeing them down and had a skank of a mother. Charlie quite possibly had it worse. His mom was a prostitute and didn’t know until much later in his life, he developed a habit of sniffling glue and other toxic substances that most definitely affected his judgement, and almost got assaulted by his uncle.
While that’s not an excuse for all the crap they’ve done, you can kinda see how they turned out the way they did.
I think it's kind of funny and definitely on purpose that Charlie is the day man. Charlie DAY-man.

I feel like the blood bucket wasn't taken seriously enough and may still prove Frank is his real dad.
Also it's unfortunate that humans tend to want people they can't have because they fantasize and distort who they think the person. Then when yiu date them you realize the reality that they are a real person who doesn't conform to delusions of who they are. At least I have learned that lesson the hard way and I know I'm not alone
If we look at the other Charakters, he may be not so broken after all. At least he is honest about his weirdness.

I don’t personally believe Jack molested Charlie. I think he tried to come on to him when he was older because he’s still into him when he’s in his 40s. There doesn’t seem to be much bad blood between them and they worked together in the Bird Law episode.

the reveal of charlie's father was awful writing, the show really went downhill
This season is by FAR the weakest next to when they were trying to replace Dennis. Less "were artsy and pretentious" more "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia". The writing isn't as good. The acting isn't as good. The characters aren't as good. Which it's 15 seasons so fair. But like. Just end the show if it isn't going to be able to keep the vibe
