I love how similar the beef between Bob's burgers and family guy is to Bob's and Jimmy Pesto's. The successful one is being incredibly aggressive to Bob, but the Bob just watches it make an ass out of itself.
It's like in this most recent season where Bob is about to go sabotage Jimmy Pesto for something he did, and instead decides to tell him "I'd rather be me than you" and leave.
@@bcrunch4232 Yeah there have been multiple episodes that have mentioned that Pesto's food stinks, its more the gimmicks like karoke night and his corner cutting that keeps him afloat. Theres been jokes about him mircowaving the food, Mickey famously shot and throw out the Pesto pizzas he was given in the bank robbing episode in season 2, and Jimmy's burger was literally spit out during the burger contest. Jimmy himself even admits to using subpar ingredients when hes listing off all the ways that Bob sucks at running his restaurant. I geniuely think that if Bob let one his kids run a social media account or something or maybe even added non-burger/other options like a chicken sandwhich or an impossible meat burger to his menu the restaurant would be doing much better.
Anytime Family Guy makes fun of Bob’s Burgers basically feels like the equivalent of some bitter dude in his mid Thirties mocking a child simply out of jealousy that they’ve achieved more and got more recognition than they’ve gotten in the past
These two shows also don’t have that much in common. It’s like comparing Plants Vs. Zombies and BlackOps Zombies. They both have zombies in the same way that both BB and FG are animated. Otherwise they’re different things.

Simpsons jabs at Family Guy mostly felt good natured but there is the fact Family Guy did come on to the scene with a very similar setup to The Simpsons so even when they were a little harsh it felt somewhat deserved. Family Guy’s clap back to Simpsons (pre their crossover) and basically all of their Bob’s Burgers jab have always felt really mean spirited.
There was an interview once where the Family Guy head writers (not Seth) were asked about one jab at Bobs Burgers and they simply responded that they did it because they were jealous.

You realise Family Guy has been on the air since 1999, right? It wasn't generic then. Simplistic sure, but the writing and humour early on set it leagues ahead of Bob's Burgers.
The rivalry feels like older siblings(simpsons and South Park) making fun of family guy for years and now there is a new youngest sibling(bobs burger) so family guy tries doing what happened to them not realizing that South Park kinda had a point while family guy has to reach to bully a show that is kinda more successful than them.
Speaking of south park i find it hilarious that they never fired back at them, specially since i remember reading that Seth felt offended about the Simpsons calling Peter a homer rip off, hence why he did the rape and killing of the family (such class). So for me it feels like they knew they had no chance against them
For some reason family guy has some of the best water animation in cartoon history and then proceeds to use the worst animation ever for its characters. They can do really really good animation they just don’t want to.
I don’t think the joke was made because Seth McFarlane thinks that Bob’s Burgers has bad animation but because they actually have good quality animation.
What i think really bothered mcfarlen is that Bobs Burgers subverted both The Simpsons and Family Guy's ("stolen") trope of the doofus comic relief father figure, which has become so prevalent in nearly all modern media. And they had success/emmys for doing it. Bob is just a regular guy who loves his family and they love him back (unlike say, Married with Children). He's funny but not purely comic relief, in fact he is more often than not the straight man in the show (except when he isn't, which makes it actually funny).
McFarland doesn’t care about family guy anymore as he is only a producer. He seems to care about his other projects like Ted and the Orville while he collects a paycheck from his animated series.
I’ve always been more of a Bob’s Burgers fan since it strayed from the non-realism that shows like Family Guy, American Dad, and The Simpsons did. Of course, non-realism, doesn’t mean it’s not entertaining. There were some moments and even a good amount of episodes from those shows that I enjoyed. I just put Bob’s Burgers on top because they just have a more realistic, caring, and loving quality. And the fact that Bob and Linda are the best animated parents. They don’t beat up their kids, they don’t curse at them and they of course don’t have that “hate kid for no reason” like they do to Meg on Family Guy. If you like Family Guy, American Dad, and shows like that, thats completely fine. I just think that Bob’s Burgers is more unique and realistic compared to the others.
Plus Bob's Burgers teaches valuable lessons. One episode teaching how people should act when there is a fender bender, sadly it happens more then we would like it to happen.
I think the best take down of Family Guy and it’s primitive writing style was that South Park episode. You know that it stung because family guy actually references South Park making fun of them but don’t comment on it despite the fact that family guy take every opportunity to make fun of other shows like the simpsons, king of the hill, and bobs burgers.
They hit em with the worst weapon possible, the truth, plus they know Trey and Matt aren't afraid of controversy, unlike the Simpsons and bob's burgers which never tries to be problematic (and that's why it's great)
So family guy knows they can't punch back at south Park cus its way bigger and smarter than them, so family guy opts to punch down to bobs burgers to feel some kind of power

It's a tradition for Fox TV shows to make jokes about one another, and the network itself. It's been happening since the early 1990s. The scenes from The Simpsons, The Critic and King of the Hill were pretty funny.
Bob's Burgers got a movie before Family Guy, and that's saying something. Yes I do know the reason why we haven't gotten a Family Guy movie yet because Seth has been busy with stuff like the Ted Saga, American Dad, A Million ways to die in the West, and the Orville, so he doesn't really have the time right now. But still fingers crossed that we get a movie one day.

I think the issue for fans is because Bob's Burgers never fires back it makes it look very one-sided. It's like bantering with friends, but if one person never fires back, then to outsiders it looks like bullying, even if the person is actually fine with it. I think it's like you say, Family Guy would not rib on Bob's Burgers if the people behind the scenes didn't genuinely like it and if it wasn't a successful show. Family Guy's humour for the past couple decades has always been defined by having no sacred cows (despite some of the writers on the show forgetting this) and as soon as you put something on a pedestal and give it awards, you make it a target for derision by Family Guy. They do the same thing with politicians, celebrities, culture, etc. The point is not to put anyone down but to keep everyone grounded, by making fun of everyone, you remind them that we're all human with no one being above one another. Family Guy hasn't been perfect with this in recent years, but I feel the show generally still holds itself to this value. Also I think there is an element of online tribalism between the fans of TV shows that treat this as more of a beef than it actually is. It reminds me of when fans of Bojack Horseman had a complete meltdown over "normal words, but a horse guy!" Like Family Guy poked fun in literally the most harmless way possible but fans still went crazy over it.
To problem for me is that they are just straight up insults that come with bitterness, not actual jokes, it feels like genuine hate and that's the problem. I mean they also did that with Matthew McConaughey at the time, but they took it to such an absurd degree that it was well...funny, there's no twist here it's just "bob's burgers sucks, that's the joke"
I haven't kept track of brand new Family Guy but I agree with the above reply. Family Guy's humor is just "The writer personally hates this thing, thus it's funny when we shit on it" and feels mean for no reason. There's edgy humor like Robot Chicken which is just crazy for crazy sake or South Park that what to use it as a method of commentary. Modern Family Guy just wants to see the world burn and will belittle anything the creative team has issue with. It stops being funny when the punchline is just saying something sucks because you don't like it. At that point it's pure pettiness.
I also remember 2 shots at Rick and Morty, one where he uses Rick's portal gun and the other where a kid is watching Rick n Morty on his phone while his dad watch family guy. Both sounded way more bitter than the Bob's Burger Shade.

Well, it's not really the first time that Family Guy went too far in a rivalry. In real life, Matt Groening and Seth Macfarlane made jabs at each other in their respective shows, with The Simpsons repeatedly pointing out how similar Peter is to Homer. But Matt Groening threatened to end their friendship after Macfarlane showed Quagmire sexually assaulting Marge and proceeding to kill the entire family after Homer walks in on the two having sex (this time it was consensual).
Ironically h. Jon benjamin voices both bob and the comic book guy from family guy, he even started on family guy waaaay before his best role ever... obviously i'm talking about sterling mallory archer.

I don't think Family Guy sees the beef as light hearted. Ironic considering Bob's Burgers doesn't seem to even acknowledge it. Even more so, since Bob's Burgers is objectively better. Frankly, I think Family Guy just has some really whiny writers, so Bob's Burgers writers are just doing the right thing and not feeding the trolls.
Yeah, friendly jabs are one thing, but Family Guy’s jokes at the expense of other shows like Simpsons and Bobs Burgers always feel weirdly mean spirited and petty. I’m probably reading too deeply into it, feels like the Family Guy writers are lashing out at these shows for doing better and being more relevant, rather than lighthearted ribbing with their fellow creators. Not to mention, a lot of these jokes are based on things that are either flat out untrue about the shows they’re roasting (I.E. the jokes about Bobs Burgers doing as well in ratings as The Cleveland Show or the idea that the show is only carried by the success of Family Guy and Simpsons, which couldn’t be further from the case given how successful the show was), or go way to far in terms of mean spiritedness and edge (I.E. the infamous Marge and Quagmire Fox promo banner bit.)

In fact they always make self deprivation jokes about how The Simpsons is a genuinely better show, almost to a fault sometimes. It’s weird to see a show that was able to rival The Simpsons during their own prime not be able to make jokes about The Simpsons anymore because they lost that fight.
"Objectively better"? Don't get me wrong, I'm not the biggest fan of Family Guy, especially the last decade or so of it, but Bob's Burgers is on a whole other level of terrible. I've had to sit through a few episodes before, and honestly, I have no idea why anyone subjects themselves to it voluntarily. Just the voice actors alone make it like pulling teeth.
I wouldn't use the word "objective" in this case, because that literally doesn't make sense- comedy is by definition subjective. But otherwise, I agree with you 100%- Bob's Burgers is infinitely better, and Family Guy just comes across as the whiniest show out there.
As someone who loves art and animation that line of "looks like it was animated in a moving car" does genuinely upset me because Family Guy has the laziest and grossest animation style ever, it's very clearly puppet and premade frame controlled and an entire scene could be cranked out in an hour. Bob's Burgers has dynamic movement, really well made easing, clearly originally hand drawn scenes MOST of the time, a very fluid and not stale art style and very creative character design, and constant differing perspectives and angles compared to Family Guy's mostly 3 quarter "set stage" I remember LSMark mentioning an anthology episode and praising the animators for "creating apocalyptic models of the Griffins" which is the least effort possible. Every scene in Bob's with Jimmy Junior dancing, or Zeke wrestling, or the many hundreds of outfits the characters wear, the songs with intricate scenes and in depth choreography, Bob's Burgers art isnt perfect, but the animation is so goddamn good and feels so human and passion filled compared to Family Guy.
While I will say that the Bob's Burgers designs, at some angles, do look a bit like puppets but it's still unique in branching off from that boring art and animation that Family Guy, Simpsons, American Dad, etc. have been doing for forever.
While I'm not that big a fan of the way the show looks and some of the voice acting does drive me up a wall at some points, I can't really hate it. It makes up for it with the overall positivity and genuine familial bonds it shows.

There’s no beef, it’s typical animation domination banter, Simpsons and Family Guy has done it with each other over the years even after the personal banter was water under the bridge.
Family Guy does this with a lot of newer shows that have become more successful than it. I remember Stewie calling out Rick and Morty for “taking plenty [of our ideas] from us.” Even if you don’t like Rick and Morty, it’s pretty obvious that the shows are virtually nothing alike, so I actually have no idea what they’re even talking about. Family Guy is known for making fun of other shows, but now it’s been 20 years and a lot of the references the writers are used to using are completely outdated. So they just say completely wrong stuff like that with no shame and kinda hope people will just breeze past it.

The concept/ idea of a smart futuristic scientist with a slightly dumb average straight guy has been around for awhile before family guy. Just because family guy got popular doing it doesn’t mean they OWN it.

I love how as Bob’s Burger becomes so beloved and praised more and more, Family Guy started slowing on throwing shade and more making jokes how Bob’s Burgers is so much than them. Modern American Dad is at least on par with Bob's Burgers, if not surpassing it depending on the episode. Either way, American Dad is BY FAR the best show that Seth McFarlane has ever been involved in, and deserves infinitely more respect than it gets.

Family Guy and Bob's Burgers really took different paths since their inception. While the original Family Guy concept was the light hearted Larry & Steve released on Cartoon Network, it really just devolved into edgy adult humor. While with Bob's Burgers took the opposite approach, being that the original concept was a family of cannibals running a Sweeney Todd type restaurant.
I honestly don't get why people take Family Guy insult personally. Maybe some family Guy writers may take rivalry too seriously, but the entire style of several running Jokes on family guy is to keep beeting a dead horse until the beeting's length is the joke. It's literally a joke format: Thing happens, thing keeps happening, way too much time elapses, wasn't that funny how long that joke lasted 😉

When I saw the scene in the Trump episode where Peter pretty much says “Wow! Donald Trump likes Bob’s Burgers! Better think about that next time you’re voting for the Emmys.” I knew there was no hope left for this show.

Agreed, Bob’s Burgers doesn’t cleave to the suburban cookie cutter model of animation. It shows the nuts bolts and fissures of life on the poor side, but never omits the joyousness in its colours esp the wilderness episodes with spectacular sunsets.
Any character dancing on Bob's Burgers is more fluid than the vast majority of animation out there, it's kinda nuts how well some of the random motions are animated.
Don't get me wrong, I like the Simpsons n all, but modern Simpsons does not compare to Bobs Burgers at all; modern Simpsons is a joke of what it use to be, it's so awful now, I've completely stopped watching any new episodes which come out; I wish it had have actually been cancelled when the rumours came out the other year about season 32 or 33 being it's final one, but we're on season 34 now; it's been 35 years and 760 episodes + 1 movie, it's time to call it quits, it's over

The rivalry feels like older siblings(simpsons and South Park) making fun of family guy for years and now there is a new youngest sibling(bobs burger) so family guy tries doing what happened to them not realizing that South Park kinda had a point while family guy has to reach to bully a show that is kinda more successful than them.
Speaking of south park i find it hilarious that they never fired back at them, specially since i remember reading that Seth felt offended about the Simpsons calling Peter a homer rip off, hence why he did the rape and killing of the family (such class).

For some reason family guy has some of the best water animation in cartoon history and then proceeds to use the worst animation ever for its characters.

What i think really bothered mcfarlen is that Bobs Burgers subverted both The Simpsons and Family Guy's ("stolen") trope of the doofus comic relief father figure, which has become so prevalent in nearly all modern media. And they had success/emmys for doing it. Bob is just a regular guy who loves his family and they love him back (unlike say, Married with Children). He's funny but not purely comic relief, in fact he is more often than not the straight man in the show (except when he isn't, which makes it actually funny).
McFarland doesn’t care about family guy anymore as he is only a producer.
He seems to care about his other projects like Ted and the Orville while he collects a paycheck from his animated series.
I’ve always been more of a Bob’s Burgers fan since it strayed from the non-realism that shows like Family Guy, American Dad, and The Simpsons did. Of course, non-realism, doesn’t mean it’s not entertaining. There were some moments and even a good amount of episodes from those shows that I enjoyed. I just put Bob’s Burgers on top because they just have a more realistic, caring, and loving quality. And the fact that Bob and Linda are the best animated parents. They don’t beat up their kids, they don’t curse at them and they of course don’t have that “hate kid for no reason” like they do to Meg on Family Guy.
If you like Family Guy, American Dad, and shows like that, thats completely fine. I just think that Bob’s Burgers is more unique and realistic compared to the others.
In recent years Bob's Burgers has gotten more laffs outta me than Family Guy or The Simpsons combined...!

I think the best take down of Family Guy and it’s primitive writing style was that South Park episode. You know that it stung because family guy actually references South Park making fun of them but don’t comment on it despite the fact that family guy take every opportunity to make fun of other shows like the simpsons, king of the hill, and bobs burgers.
They hit em with the worst weapon possible, the truth, plus they know Trey and Matt aren't afraid of controversy, unlike the Simpsons and bob's burgers which never tries to be problematic (and that's why it's great)

Bob's Burgers got a movie before Family Guy, and that's saying something. Yes I do know the reason why we haven't gotten a Family Guy movie yet because Seth has been busy with stuff like the Ted Saga, American Dad, A Million ways to die in the West, and the Orville, so he doesn't really have the time right now. But still fingers crossed that we get a movie one day.

I think the issue for fans is because Bob's Burgers never fires back it makes it look very one-sided. It's like bantering with friends, but if one person never fires back, then to outsiders it looks like bullying, even if the person is actually fine with it. I think it's like you say, Family Guy would not rib on Bob's Burgers if the people behind the scenes didn't genuinely like it and if it wasn't a successful show. Family Guy's humour for the past couple decades has always been defined by having no sacred cows (despite some of the writers on the show forgetting this) and as soon as you put something on a pedestal and give it awards, you make it a target for derision by Family Guy. They do the same thing with politicians, celebrities, culture, etc. The point is not to put anyone down but to keep everyone grounded, by making fun of everyone, you remind them that we're all human with no one being above one another. Family Guy hasn't been perfect with this in recent years, but I feel the show generally still holds itself to this value. Also I think there is an element of online tribalism between the fans of TV shows that treat this as more of a beef than it actually is. It reminds me of when fans of Bojack Horseman had a complete meltdown over "normal words, but a horse guy!" Like Family Guy poked fun in literally the most harmless way possible but fans still went crazy over it.
To problem for me is that they are just straight up insults that come with bitterness, not actual jokes, it feels like genuine hate and that's the problem.
I mean they also did that with Matthew McConaughey at the time, but they took it to such an absurd degree that it was well...funny, there's no twist here it's just "bob's burgers sucks, that's the joke"
I haven't kept track of brand new Family Guy but I agree with the above reply. Family Guy's humor is just "The writer personally hates this thing, thus it's funny when we shit on it" and feels mean for no reason. There's edgy humor like Robot Chicken which is just crazy for crazy sake or South Park that what to use it as a method of commentary. Modern Family Guy just wants to see the world burn and will belittle anything the creative team has issue with. It stops being funny when the punchline is just saying something sucks because you don't like it. At that point it's pure pettiness.

Well, it's not really the first time that Family Guy went too far in a rivalry. In real life, Matt Groening and Seth Macfarlane made jabs at each other in their respective shows, with The Simpsons repeatedly pointing out how similar Peter is to Homer. But Matt Groening threatened to end their friendship after Macfarlane showed Quagmire sexually assaulting Marge and proceeding to kill the entire family after Homer walks in on the two having sex (this time it was consensual).

I don't think Family Guy sees the beef as light hearted. Ironic considering Bob's Burgers doesn't seem to even acknowledge it. Even more so, since Bob's Burgers is objectively better.
Frankly, I think Family Guy just has some really whiny writers, so Bob's Burgers writers are just doing the right thing and not feeding the trolls.
Yeah, friendly jabs are one thing, but Family Guy’s jokes at the expense of other shows like Simpsons and Bobs Burgers always feel weirdly mean spirited and petty. I’m probably reading too deeply into it, feels like the Family Guy writers are lashing out at these shows for doing better and being more relevant, rather than lighthearted ribbing with their fellow creators.
Not to mention, a lot of these jokes are based on things that are either flat out untrue about the shows they’re roasting (I.E. the jokes about Bobs Burgers doing as well in ratings as The Cleveland Show or the idea that the show is only carried by the success of Family Guy and Simpsons, which couldn’t be further from the case given how successful the show was), or go way to far in terms of mean spiritedness and edge (I.E. the infamous Marge and Quagmire Fox promo banner bit.)

Nothing pisses off aging creators more than a new show that's more popular with the younger audience
As someone who loves art and animation that line of "looks like it was animated in a moving car" does genuinely upset me because Family Guy has the laziest and grossest animation style ever, it's very clearly puppet and premade frame controlled and an entire scene could be cranked out in an hour.
Bob's Burgers has dynamic movement, really well made easing, clearly originally hand drawn scenes MOST of the time, a very fluid and not stale art style and very creative character design, and constant differing perspectives and angles compared to Family Guy's mostly 3 quarter "set stage"
I remember LSMark mentioning an anthology episode and praising the animators for "creating apocalyptic models of the Griffins" which is the least effort possible.
Every scene in Bob's with Jimmy Junior dancing, or Zeke wrestling, or the many hundreds of outfits the characters wear, the songs with intricate scenes and in depth choreography, Bob's Burgers art isnt perfect, but the animation is so goddamn good and feels so human and passion filled compared to Family Guy.
While I will say that the Bob's Burgers designs, at some angles, do look a bit like puppets but it's still unique in branching off from that boring art and animation that Family Guy, Simpsons, American Dad, etc. have been doing for forever.

While I'm not that big a fan of the way the show looks and some of the voice acting does drive me up a wall at some points, I can't really hate it. It makes up for it with the overall positivity and genuine familial bonds it shows.

Family Guy does this with a lot of newer shows that have become more successful than it. I remember Stewie calling out Rick and Morty for “taking plenty [of our ideas] from us.”
Even if you don’t like Rick and Morty, it’s pretty obvious that the shows are virtually nothing alike, so I actually have no idea what they’re even talking about. Family Guy is known for making fun of other shows, but now it’s been 20 years and a lot of the references the writers are used to using are completely outdated. So they just say completely wrong stuff like that with no shame and kinda hope people will just breeze past it.

I love how as Bob’s Burger becomes so beloved and praised more and more, Family Guy started slowing on throwing shade and more making jokes how Bob’s Burgers is so much than them. Their “beef” is so much healthier than how Family Guy did with the Simpsons back then, especially that Quagmire and Marge scene or even South Park.

Modern American Dad is at least on par with Bob's Burgers, if not surpassing it depending on the episode. Either way, American Dad is BY FAR the best show that Seth McFarlane has ever been involved in, and deserves infinitely more respect than it gets.

While the original Family Guy concept was the light hearted Larry & Steve released on Cartoon Network, it really just devolved into edgy adult humor. While with Bob's Burgers took the opposite approach, being that the original concept was a family of cannibals running a Sweeney Todd type restaurant.
I honestly don't get why people take Family Guy insult personally. Maybe some family Guy writers may take rivalry too seriously, but the entire style of several running Jokes on family guy is to keep beeting a dead horse until the beeting's length is the joke. It's literally a joke format: Thing happens, thing keeps happening, way too much time elapses, wasn't that funny how long that joke lasted 😉

Agreed, Bob’s Burgers doesn’t cleave to the suburban cookie cutter model of animation. It shows the nuts bolts and fissures of life on the poor side, but never omits the joyousness in its colours esp the wilderness episodes with spectacular sunsets.
Any character dancing on Bob's Burgers is more fluid than the vast majority of animation out there, it's kinda nuts how well some of the random motions are animated.
