- It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has had one of the longest runs in sitcom history, and it still manages to be absolutely hilarious despite being on the air for over a decade. There are many reasons why this is the case, but in this video essay I wanted to explore the idea of character, specifically character backstory in relation to their parents, and a common TV sitcom trope that the show uses to their advantage. It's these small details that really sell the characters, and why the show is still so effective.

Film Radar this is the first video I've seen from this channel and I'm glad i found you, i highly enjoyed the video!
I think it's really funny that you talk about how the show's characters never progress but haven't seen the series latest season. Without spoiling too much, I think this is a concept that they are going to toy very heavily with in the next two seasons, which in my eyes, could be the final two based on what season 12 ended on. While I love how the show never "progresses" and since they have ended the current season on a note that has me actually excited to see where it goes next, they may begin exploring the idea of change and how it affects a sitcom like Always Sunny. Would love to hear your thoughts once you watch the new season!
Film Radar the side characters are the only ones that change. Take Cricket or Dennis' gf, they change dramatically through the seasons while the core cast stays the same.
(In reference to what Jon Arbuckle said about how season 12 is different) You're absolutely right. It's strange because any of the previous seasons and it would've been fine to come out with this video, but due to the character development of Mac and Dennis specifically, it's wrong to say there has been no change. And I know it takes a while to put one of these videos out, but IASIP's last episode was March 8th, over a month ago, so I don't know why it has been totally disregarded. Maybe they expected because 11 times out of 12 they haven't really done anything significantly different with the characters between seasons, but 12 was a curveball.
Film Radar in its sunny the characters rarely stagnate a scene with emotion when they're re talked about or done wrong by the other main characters which result in rapid fire jokes that you dont recognize until you rewatch many times.
I love how they seem to ruin random peoples lives throughout the city.
Some of my favorite gags on the show are just the innocent people who get caught in the crossfire, always cracks me up.

My favorite example is the Gugino's server, and that they never recognize him each time lol
The lawyer is a great subversion to this, as he's mostly come out on top against the gang except maybe once.
But the main draw of the show is getting to hear Danny Devito say the word "Trash"
Honestly, anything he says cracks me up. "Chahlie!" "Dennis, your mother is a whoore." Danny Devito is an American treasure.

Seriously though, the moment you peel away at the comedy on this show, the five main characters lead really really really depressing lives.
I love it, their lives only get more depressing as the show goes on.

Well, in order to make the gang exist within a semi-plausible world (and to keep them in a stasis for sitcom purposes) the amount of suffering they impose on the world must be reflected, or at least shown, back to them. We feel sorry, and therefore form connections, with the gang because they are punished for their actions. It's one of the reasons Charlie is often viewed as innocent or relatable (he is servile, and punished often, sometimes without equivalent cause), and Dennis the opposite (he puts himself in positions of power, often avoiding true punishment). All love though, this has got to be one of my favorite shows of the past decade.
@@noahmuskett9540 Honestly, Charlie is just as much of a sociopath. I think his moral event horizon was when he dated that rich girl. And he has essentially ghosted the waitress after finally getting her.
Dennis is by far the best character development i've ever seen! The slow descent into us seeing his true socio/psychopathic tendencies over the episodes and seasons is just brilliant! He has become my favourite character in the series
Oh 100% When I first was watching the show, he was one of my least favorite characters, but he just keeps getting more psychotic with every season and I love every minute of it. He's become my favorite character as well, almost everything he says gets a big laugh from me these days.
season 12 is SOOO interesting on this note, because it becomes more clear that dennis' display of sociopathy is really more of a defense mechanism than anything, which developed due to his being raped, and probably also his terrible parents. which is so, so dark.
Film Radar thats the exact same for me. I loathed Dennis and wanted more Charlie and Mac episodes and banter and such, but as I re watch, Dennis rants and raves become the most funny things ever to watch

This and Trailer Park Boys. They're very similar. 3 childhood friends, a great old guy (Frank/Lahey), a perfect setting (bar/trailer park) etc.

I didnt like that episode. mac shouldnt have ever come out of the closet. theyre supposed to be bad people. him being in denial about being gay was funny cause it wasnt a nice, heart-warming character trait
yeah but you can still see it work, with mac bringing it up a lot and using it as an advantage in arguments which plays well into the gangs overall character. But yeah there would have been even more possibilities if he stayed in the closet, but you have to change it up a bit every once in a while.

the reason frank is such a good character is because he fits in so well. he spent his whole life in business building an empire and once he was ready to retire he realised he missed out all the things that made him happy, like living in squalor and being part of a family.. "the gang" is essentially his family and he missed out of the joys of being "free" and up to no good like most people do in their early years. He has alot more back story that doesnt really work with the story line, but he is old as fuck and it might be all in his head. He is just trying to get the most enjoyment out of his life while he can and will do anything to help out his family (the gang) and thats why he is such a great addition to the show.. morality is the biggest fear for most! -just my opinion-
The show really wouldn't be the same without him. It's weird going back to watch season 1, his absence is definitely felt.

I love Mac's gay moments, Frank's insanity, Dee's bird like qualities, Dennis' psychotic mindset, and just Charlie being himself.
For frank’s backstory, he opened up to a therapist and revealed he was shipped off to a special school as I child and his first kiss died two weeks later. He also shared a room with that he called a “frog boy”
And in I believe season 10 it's revealed that (spoilers)

I was 10 when my cousin introduced me to always sunny. Im 17 now and ive been hooked ever since. Its literally one of only shows i can consistently watch and laugh. I still come across subtle details that ive never caught before. Itll be a sad day when sunny stops making new episodes

Pinguim Atrevido I think that statement only works for bad comedy; good comedy like Borat, IASIP, Arrested Development, anything by Edgar Wright gets better the more you think about it
Always Sunny feels like watching animals at the a zoo. Where as the Office or other comedy shows try their best to make at least some characters relatable and cohesively normal, Always Sunny goes the direct opposite direction. Consistently their behaviour is so outlandish it’s hard not to watch XD
This is exactly why I felt weird about the new season Dennis broke out of his egotistical bubble, trying to run the bar responsibly and facing his responsibility as a father. Completely out of character
Hmm idk I thought that he was trying to run the bar in that one episode because it was st valentine and he wanted not to think about it since he was hurt for not getting any presents...The other thing though, well we never saw him as a father before this season, we would think he'd be the selfish prick he's always is but remember that water park episode where he's with the little girl? I think in a way there's a possibility that a kid could fill this hole inside of him or at least he's thinking that. Who knows? maybe next season he'll be back like "I tried it and I hated it".

i think being stars and writers is pretty key for a show's longevity - you have total creative freedom and won't run into the scheduling issues that are so often the actual downfall of so many great shows.

AV Club brought me here if you're seeing an uptick in viewers, but I love video essay channels so you have another sub from me! Also I rewatch Frank saying 'I'm pure' while bathing in hand sanitizer almost every week, he's too funny, he's a classic example of a character a sitcom never planned for in the beginning that elevated the entire show, especially since he has money to fund the gang's adventures or enable them.
Hot diggity dang, that's awesome! Haha, one of the best Frank episodes. "I think I'm gonna go shave...get all of this...filthy hair off my face..." Fun fact, the guys over at FX loved the show, but the ratings weren't great. They wanted to bring a bigger name into the mix to help more people see it, Danny DeVito's kids were fans of the show, so he agreed to do the second season. They only had him for something like, 20 days, so they filmed the whole season simultaneously so he could appear in every episode, and Danny had such a blast making the season that he agreed to stay on. And now, I can't imagine the show without him, he's terrific.

It's not only true of the characters on the show, but people in real life who keep making the same mistakes without learning from them, while deflecting from their problems. This is very true of a lot of people, which is why I find the show so funny because you can see people you may know IRL in these characters.

I was 16 when I started watching it at season 2, but watching south park since 10 or 11.
I love how you can either jump straight into the show or watch in order. The episodes are hilarious by themselves but watching everyone as it goes on is great, plus references to old episodes (i.e. wildcard charlie in gas crisis/trash strike, conversations at beginning of trash episode, etc.) is amazing.
I've binged watched in order, and rewatched many episodes at random, and the show is still hilarious no matter what way you dive in. But yeah, I love the little callbacks to older episodes :)

I thought it went downhill during the season Mac got fat and maintained that slow downward trajectory. The last time watching 1-12, however, I realized they were all actually pretty much golden seasons.
It's funny, I thought the same way. I don't even know what happened, I just remember thinking "Meh" but having gone back several times now, the show just never stops being hilarious to me, even the later seasons are absolutely amazing.

there is a plot hole that bothers me about Always Sunny. In the first season there is an episode where Charley refers to his sister but we never actually see her or know anything about her.

Yeah, I remember it was episode 7. "I gotta say, my favorite part was at the end there when we were all hugging and my sister screamed and told everyone that I touched her vagina."
Out of everyone they shown at the intervention, there were two young twin girls, who possibly could of been his sisters. But he only openly pointed out the grandma, uncle jack, and his mom when he entered the house.

They changed most things from Season 1 so most from that season was retconned. But they might open that case and settle it if they feel the need to change it.
It's not a plot hole, because it doesn't contradict anything. It's just a loose end.
