TOO MANY RECORDS - Downsizing my record collection

  • I spent some time this spring going through my record collection. I discovered a whole bunch of vinyl I wasn't going to listen to again. It made me realize it was time to downsize the collection. Here are some of the records that will be going to new homes. It is not my intention to sell this online (I really don't want to ship stuff). I just want to give you a sense of where my thinking is at nowadays.

I sold my entire vinyl collection in the mid nineties out of finantial necessity and lack of use. Looking back to the past I really regret because some of those items became very rare and expensive. I've been building up my vinyl collection again for the past 2 years, and I hope to only get rid of items for better replacements. Good luck!

How did you even get anything selling them in the 90s? Smiths and Joy Division were a dollar. Vinyl was considered scum in the 90s

I had a similar amazon story with a surprise ending. Amazon also sent me a wrong record many years ago and I never got around to returning it and then it was too late. The Mint sealed copy sat on my shelf for years. A few weeks ago I looked it up on Discogs and the mid selling price was +$400 US. It was a rap band called Flatbush Zombies and I just sold the record on eBay for $510 US. Talk about lucky. Using the money to get a couple grail metal records. Great video Frank.

I resolved this by deciding to only buy vinyl from my top five or so favorite bands and then I collect Wax Trax! label releases, even if they suck. That's it. Even when you focus your buying, the potential for large collections persists....

I'd suggest you insert some of the 7-inch records in the sleeves of albums by the same artists, as a kind of "bonus" that you can put on or not when you listen to the album. Like that Alice Cooper 7-inch; couple it with an album of roughly the same vintage. That way they won't be taking up the space of a separate collection of 7-inch records but you'll still have them just in case you want to give them a spin.

“The more Bono talks, the less I like U2”. I thought I was alone in that thinking ! It’s ok to cull the heard every so often, if we miss one we can always get it again. Great collection!

Yes, it's all a matter of personal taste where some albums are vital to some, but not as essential to others and it depends if one has listened to an album to death to the point that it's no longer as captivating as it was initially.

I have been a victim of "involuntary" downsizing more times than I care to think about. Typically happens like you're a room mate and you've amassed a decent vinyl collection and when you have to suddenly move, your roommate promises to keep it safe and when you return for your stuff ooooh it was stolen. Or they moved and left no trail or...
My current vinyl collection was weeded down to my best 500 or so. When I got these that I have now I had to move all my worldly belongings 1400 miles across country in a station wagon towing a 71 Chevelle SS as a trailer along with my wife and 4 kids. I had a trucker friend who was going through my destination and had room for 1 wrapped pallet. Records guitars amps and boxes.
I ALWAYS ripped my vinyl to cassette tape to listen to them never playing them otherwise. Still have my PL518 Pioneer TT and my old Sansui integrated amplifier. I use an old Audio Technica cart that works but I want to revive my good one needing a new stylus before I go wild and crazy; start digitizing and selling my vinyl once that's done. I've play tested a few and yup they still sound crystal clear and amazing. Around 200 or so have never been played. My last 2 I had streamed but wanted to check the vinyl for sound difference. Holy cow! Huge improvement over the digital by far!!! Van der Graf Generator 'Pawn Hearts' and 13th Floor Elevators "Easter Everywhere'.
The second side label says that it's a Red Krayola album so I confirmed the vinyl was correctly pressed but they slapped a wrong label on it. Have practically gotten to my core collection after sorting and getting rid of anything less than at minimum VG and those are only staying due to rarity and value to me.
I stopped collecting by 1987 or so. I'm 64, widower so was gonna sell em for needed money but wanted to test out my stuff that has been wrapped in plastic since 1987 and before one song finished I retreated back to 1987 and changed my mind. Left with about 400-ish. So yes, I've downsized!

Hi Frank my name is Aaron and I’m new to the VC , I discovered your channel about a year and a half ago and have watched your channel ever since, after discovering your channel i have branched out and started watching many other channels, about a month ago I started my own channel and am really enjoying it , last summer I downsized my collection from about 3500 to 2800 by selling my doubles and albums from genres I don’t listen to as much , after a year has gone by i am regretting only the ones that I wasn’t sure about selling but the bulk of them I don’t regret at all, you have some great records your getting rid of , best of luck with your downsizing, by the way you’ve really gotten me into Diemonds i really love Never Wanna Die and La Chinga as well rock on !🤘🤘

Congratulations Frank .. I have had clearing the dups it on my "to do" list for a over a year. I went through everything a couple years ago and got it all into a spreadsheet. I have managed to maintain the sheet so it's not like it would be too much work to cull the collection. Just cant seem to find the time. I considered a weeks vacation this winter dedicated to vinyl. Pull it all and decide what sounds best - then sell off the extras. Pickup a couple cases of beer and make a party out of it. It's a matter of space, I am pretty much at capacity and I cant get too much more unless I let the duplicates go.

The best album you are getting rid of is Paul’s Boutique. I don’t like the Beastie Boys but the sampling on that album is outstanding. They got into a lot of legal trouble later because of that. Put the best vinyl up on eBay!!

Hey Frank! Great video. My wife said to me "what are all those records going to do for you. Why don't you sell them and enjoy the money?" It's difficult to get rid of them as I bought them in my youth. But I will eventually get down to it. I'm going through my 45s now to put on Discogs. My albums topped out at 400! I'm getting into cassettes too. A mini system I bought for my garage has a cassette deck in it!!! Lol. If you ever consider selling to "you guys" please let me know. I'd love to have the red Beatles album. I lost mine years ago. Plus any Van Halen too.
    Thanks!!!
Ohhh....good luck on the Techneeks (Technics) TT. That's the only pronunciation. Hahahahaha

I hear the same thing at home and respond with, I enjoy my collection, it brings me contentment when I need it, its my own personal way of taking my mind away to another place and time, and I ENJOY MUSIC !!!! They say enjoy the money???? How do you enjoy the money without spending it on things you enjoy or put the money in the bank. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a savings account but come on, we have to enjoy life. Now I enjoy this channel but my gosh the financial loss that will be taken which is why when I can I buy used and very few times brand new.

    Hi Frank, very good episode!
When CDs started I was sold on that "miraculous" format and culled hundreds of records to go and trade in. But THANKFULLY I never got around to actually doing it.
But that was a long time ago and now at age 65 I feel to reduce and declutter from my over 4,000 LPs. So that's what I've been doing most of this year. I pull everything I don't think I'll keep so they stick out an inch on the shelves and I can see what I'm doing. Then I'm playing each one to make sure it's not a keeper. I bought a ton of 80's Metal but now don't play that style and those can go, etc
My plan is to buy a table at an upcoming record sellers show and see what happens. The Spring ones were all cancelled and Im waiting to see the fate of the September show.
Might try mail-order if I have to.

Frank, I've got waaaaaaaaay too many records too (over 2,500 records for sure not counting 150 to 200 45 rpm records and 300 or so 78 rpm records) and it's always on my mind regarding when I'll find the time to listen to all of those records. It becomes more and more of a concern the older one gets (you and I are of similar age).
As a partial solution, I have become pickier when buying records online or at thrift stores where I load records into a shopping cart initially, but then I edit my cart by checking the condition as I always do, but then I pause to think whether or not I really need the record or will listen to it regularly to justify the space it would take up in my home.
I've also been listening to some blind-buy records where I took a chance buying them from thrift stores for a couple of bucks each, but upon listening to them, I decided that I didn't really like the music or would never listen to them again, so in those cases to free up some space, I usually re-donated the records back to Goodwill, Salvation Army Thrift Stores, or my local Value Village stores.
I should consider selling some, but it's a hassle to pack records in LP mailers, head off to the post office, fill out customs forms if needed, and then hope that the buyer will a) be honest and b) be happy with the records as described.
Anyway, great video as usual, Frank. :)

I think it is good to go through this process. Keeps your collection from going stale and keeps you more engaged with it as well. About 3 years ago I went through a purge process based strictly on condition where I got rid of anything that was not in strong VG++ or better condition. That made me purge a few things I wish I had back, but I absolutely LOVE where my collection is now because of it. BTW...I kind want those two Anvil lps you showed at the end ;)

Thanks for posting this video. There aren't very many vinyl downsizing/collection culling videos out there. I find them really interesting. During CV19 lockdown here in NZ I culled out about 300 albums from my collection and traded them in for around 30 albums I would actually like and play and a vintage Thorens turntable to use in a bedroom system.

Did this back in the early stages of the Pandemic. I weeded out nearly half of my collection. I went through the albums 3 times. Some were obvious, others were placed back in the collection once I went through one more time.
My guidelines were, if I had an album for one song, if I had the songs I liked on another album, something I had never listened to after I purchased it.

Yes, I have massively downsized too!
I used to have tons of DJ vinyl, all types of hardhouse, acidhouse, gabber and early hardstyle...
Now I only have about 250 left; that sounds like a lot, but that’s just one meter on one shelf.
Oh and you should definitely go for the modern Technics SL-1200GR
That one is even better than the oldies 😜
    I used to have a 1200MK2, 4 and M5G, but now I have a 1200G.
The 1200GR comes very close to the 1200G (I know, it’s like I’m talking in secret codes, but you’ll figure it out once you get to know them 1200s! 😜).

I’ve downsized my collection a couple times over the years. Back in the early 90s, when I was in college, vinyl was uncool and people were just giving it away. Friends’ parents knew I was a vinyl collector so I’d often hear “I think I have some old records somewhere, you can have them if you want them.” I would take any and everything. Later on in the early 2000s I’d accumulated so many records, and there was a lot of chaff in there, so I went through and pulled out all the junk. The second time I downsized was probably 10-15 years ago. The vinyl resurgence hadn’t begun yet, and I got rid of a lot of my classic rock vinyl. After all, I could listen on CDs, and it was the stuff they played to death on classic rock radio. The records were only worth a couple bucks each, so why keep them, right? Yeah, regret that now since even common classic rock records are going for $8-10 these days. The last time I downsized was about 3 years ago. Didn’t do a huge cut, but that’s when I started cataloging my collection on Discogs. That allowed me to pull out doubles (and sometimes triples and quadruples!) of records. I also pulled out things that were worth decent money that I just never listened to. I pulled out probably a couple hundred records, but I still had over 2500 left so I think I’ll be okay!
I’m a big Lenny Kravitz fan and back in the 90s I collected as much of his stuff on vinyl as I could. Back in the pre-eBay/Discogs days, and when the World Wide Web was in its infancy, finding stuff was not nearly so easy. I found a lot of import singles and such at record shows, and paid out the wazoo for them. Those 10” singles are sweet looking, I don’t think I have any Let Love Rule era stuff on 10”.
That Paul’s Boutique should get you good money, depending on the pressing. The original ‘89 Capitol pressing with the 8-panel foldout goes for triple digits these days. The ‘98 Grand Royal pressing with the 8-panel foldout still goes for median $50 US these days. There’s no shortage of people that want that album on vinyl! I have the ‘98 repress myself.

I'm digitsiing and cataloguing my entire collection, then once I'm done, I'm done! No more records to keep will be added, and it'll stay at around the 1,000 mark (down from a peak of about 10,000). It's a very mind-cleansing experience to have a few you know well instead of thousands of you know so distantly you can forget you even have them. I don't want to be that guy with so much plastic that there is more music than my likely lifetime in my possession.

I did this a few months ago. I realized that people who "donated" to my collection, from time to time, really had different tastes than I do. I donated a stack of albums I knew friends wouldn't like to Goodwill. The rest were gifted to other vinyl junkies like me. I did it without their knowledge, just packaged them up and sent them. One of them received a holy grail Emerson, Lake, and Palmer Brain Salad Surgery Japanese press. I knew he would care for it and listen to it much more than I.

Starting January of this year (2020) I started a "Complete Collection Play Through" and what I found was albums I missed listening to and more importantly albums I just lost interest in. On top of that I went to a "Quality over Quantity" rule, which has also helped me accomplish a couple of things. Work on my gear, which is where I wanted it to be now AND search and purchase those more pricey grails on my list. I think this happens to most collectors at some point. Good luck with moving the "inventory" and putting it towards other things :)

I thinned out my record collection some years ago. But I ended up rebuying several of the albums I had gotten rid of. After that experience, I decided that I wouldn’t go through that again. So I have kept all of the records that I’ve gotten since, even if I don’t play them very often, because you never know what you might want to listen to in the future.

Alf Edge I can’t give you an exact number, since it was so long ago. But I do remember having to re-buy several albums. And that’s why I said no more to thinning out my record collection.
I also buy records now that I want to keep, so getting rid of albums isn’t an issue to begin with.

Hi Frank, great video. i think we have all had to downsize our collections at some point, i did it in 2005, and ended up buying back most of what i sold and added more as well. I am about to downsize house from 4 bedrooms and rumpus room into 2 bedroom unit so will probably need to downsize again from 12k+ to something more manageable, only problem is where to start,

Many of us have been in this position, Frank. I downsized a little under two years ago but now the collection is back to what it was... or possibly slightly larger. On the plus side, it did help me to weed out a lot of albums I wasn't that attached to or whose condition was a bit suspect.

Wow, the amount of RSD and doubles, triples you're getting rid of... totally makes sense! They wouldn't even make their way in to my collection in the first place, can't afford to even if I wanted to. Good to downsize! The only record I have 3 times is Devo's first album which I have UK and US which have different artwork and then a picture disc.

I completely agree with you on 7” I’m not buying them any more. The only one I’ve kept is the Zeppelin RSD yellow one. I really need to go through and downsize. The only reason I haven’t is assume I will get such lowball offers locally and waiting to find the right buyer for each one seems like such a daunting task. I’d have to be willing to sell at that 50-75% below discogs value to move them quick enough which is hard for me to do.

The food downsized my collection lol. Can’t say I made any money off that but I understand what you were talking about. My plan had been when I retire to start selling it off and by age 80 sell what’s left. It was actually in my financial plan. I just had to redo that plan! It’s great you can let go of the music, that was always a struggle for me but I had the room. Now I don’t so I am trying to be more selective.

Cause they have already came to an agreement that my daughter takes all the records and my son takes all the CDs. So I may not be downsizing at all.. hahahaha. I did downsize 20+ years ago and got rid of my records and regret some. If I ever downsize, it's gonna be stuff I got free. Tony Orlando, 101 strings, ferrante teicher, thrift store junk I only kept cause they were perfect. In the 90s, when I collected, everything was a dollar and mint. Everything's a fortune now. I still collect, but mostly sealed new stuff, and carefully selected pricey items.

If I buy a bulk of records I always get rid of some in the kallax I haven't listened to for a while and trade them in to lower the costs. The SL 1200 is a beast, bought my SL 1210 MK2 a few months ago, and I really dig it. Now testing it out with an Arcam Apha 8R amp and Chario Lynx speakers that came in the thrift store I work in, and it sounds great. Stevie Ray Vaughn and Herbie Hankock for example, are pure bliss to listen to on these. I'm still on the lookout for that Beastie Boys album, hope to find it in the bins somewhere.
