  • I've been going through my record collection and tracking albums in Discogs. I was surprised at the value of some records that have come out in the past 10 years, or been reissued in the past 10 years. Check it out!

Price doesn’t matter to me,as long as I pay a reasonable price initially that’s all I care about. I just enjoy listening to them.

This is why I buy doubles with new albums I want to listen to regularly. That way I have a potentially valuable copy to maybe sell one day without having to lose anything. Sometimes I have to stop myself and let a 2nd copy go because that can get expensive.

Apparently, my copy of the Violent Femmes’ self-titled album is now worth like $65. I have the Rhino/Slash 180g reissue. That surprised me, because two years ago, I would see it for under $20 at every record store I would frequent.

I also have a few valuable records from the past 10 years (first pressing) that go for over 80 bucks... while I have bought them at 10 to 20 bucks, just ridiculous!
I think it has to do with speculation, some people just buy records because they'll be worth a lot in the near future.

Hey Frank! Great video. One of my albums that increased the most is Rush's 2112 album. It's sell for more than $200...... and I believe it went for around $600 at one time. Discogs has recently changed their layout and I can't only see the selling from prices. Most of my albums I bought waaaaaaay back in the 70s and 80s and on average are now worth $25 to $80. Some are not but a lot are.
    Keep up the good work!

With a lot of collector's for vinyl it's also the art work on the album that people love because they can be framed you should sell the ones you don't want and get the money to buy the ones you do. I am loving your show bringing back a lot of memories thanks Frank love from the UK.❤️

The double album "Hot Sauce Committee" with bonus 7-inch from the Beastie Boys cost me $20 USD in 2012. It's now worth about $60. Great package and great final album from them. "Just Like the Fambly Cat" from Grandaddy also cost at most $20 in 2007, now worth about $100. "New Wave" from Against Me cost less than $20 in 2007; now worth about $100. I have most of the original Nirvana releases from the 90s. Those are my most valuable, and I bought them new when they came out.

Well Frank, like you I believe the true hobbyist wins out by collecting for the love of it rather than seeing it purely as an investment. With that said, I've never been really motivated to researched the 600 or so albums and 30 box sets I've collected over the years. Interesting to note from today's show that A Different Kind of Truth by Van Halen, and as you pointed out in a previous show Van Halen's Balance are worth some bucks. Glad to say I got a copy of each. Thanks for the tip !

I love the Albums you talk about here. You have a natural ability for this, which makes it more enjoyable. I also collect the odd piece of Vinyl.I've been buying vinyl for well over 40 years
In all those years, it's been the last 10 years where I'm having a problem with re-issues. 2 or 3 years ago and after waiting over 30 years for this The "Sandinista" album by the Clash was finally re-issued. Even when it was originally issued it was hard to find. It really made the record company mad. Because after releasing London Calling they didn't like the fact that it was a double album (higher shipping cost). So what did the hardest working band do: Sandinista. Triple album.
I own a "best of" box set of cd's of the Clash and soon realized that the majority of songs come from the Sandinista album. When I played my brand new re issue I thought something was seriously wrong with my system. But no it was the brand new vinyl. Same with my brand new Radiohead re-issue. Same with my st Germaine album. In the 20th century this wasn't even a subject. There was no such thing as a bad album, except by musical taste.
The second problem with re-issues is the source.
175,000 master tapes were destroyed in a fire back in 2008 of some of the best selling artists. Which means there's a good chance your re-issue has a digital source like mp3. Some are saying this was going to drive up the price of used Vinyl because all of it has a master tape source.
    Happy vinyl hunting!

I've been collecting records for decades and what I noticed is my Beatles albums seems to be a safe bet if your only look at an investment. Ebay had a big impact on record prices. Elvis records took a big hit. A guy at my local flea market has nice records for sale but he prices them on a old price guide. Records I've seen years ago that went for hundreds of dollars are now worth far less. There are many albums from record store day that was not available at my local store are a fortune on line.

    Hi Frank,
Fun to see you on Sunday night as well. Interesting video. Yes, I have noticed as well that some of the things I own have spiked in price. Incredible. Yes, I agree as tempting as it may seem
to sell them.... you would miss it if you do and those that you did not snap up when you could you regret for not doing so. So, the motto is to be happy to have the ones we have.. and if
the opportunity arises for some other grails.... on an Amazon warehouse deal... go for it. For we know as collectors and music aficionados we always want what we do not have...
    unfortunately this is life.
God bless and keep up the great work.
    Keep well,
    Tino

The ones that gets me from the last 10 years are probably the Beatles in Mono releases (I only got 3 or 4) and the copy of Die Antwoord’s “Ten$ion” that I bought new in 2012 for like $25 and gifted to my then girlfriend. Didn’t get that one back in the breakup a year or two later. If I still had it, it would be one of the more valuable records in my collection, worth several hundred dollars. Sucks to know it is probably sitting dusty on a shelf somewhere or being spun on a Crosley.

I bought the first Stooges album from a cut-out bin at K Mart for 33 cents in the late 1970's. Collectors will now pay as much as $111 for it! That's a 333% increase in the price I paid for it!
Frank, I very much admire you for not being one of those collectors who buy purely with the goal of reselling for a profit. With you it's strictly about the music, and that's the only way anyone should buy records, books, art, or anything. Those who buy to cash in are money-grubbing so-and-so's.

It's amazing how the value of some records change over time... my biggest regret was not buying the Cake boxset when I had the chance. And I also had the Dio boxset in my cart to buy when it was on sale and the decided not to. Ah well hindsight is always 20/20. I think the record that has the most increase in value that I have would be Soundgarden's Superunknown blue vinyl release which has an average price on discogs for 200.

    • @Channel33RPM
      @Channel33RPM  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I heard a lot about the Cake boxset when it came out (RSD, right???). If I recall, there was a lot of demand for it, so I am not surprised the value has gone up.
      Stay well my friend!

    • @JJM3rd

The Cake box set was originally an RSD release in 2014, with only 900 copies being made. I wanted the box but knew with so few copies, if the store I was going to for RSD even got a copy, the first person in line would undoubtedly snag it. I’m a big Cake fan though, and got an email a few days after RSD from their mailing list saying they were going to be selling a small number of extra copies of the box set via their website. I was lucky enough to snag a copy from their website. I seem to recall the box set only cost about $75 or something like that, so a ridiculously good deal. So, it’s absolutely jaw-dropping to me that the median (MEDIAN!) price of that box is now at $800.

Good video again, Frank! The woes of opportunities missed, even if just for collection, can be harsh. I've been looking the wrong way on a number of purchases and am now left staring at visciously expensive Discog figures. I've always enjoyed vaporwave and I didn't put much thought into the vinyl side of it for the longest time, and now that I am collecting my favorites on vinyl, the prices can be absolutely absurd. Many vinyls that I've acquired I've been there at the moment of the sale opening, and they're sold out within minutes. Vinyls that go from $30 USD from the source leap to over $100 on discogs within a month. OOF!

Hey frank! I’ve seen the latest VH release go for exuberant prices. I suppose once Record stores are itching to get it out of their hands, the pressings will run out and will start accumulating their value. Alice’s W2MN is one thats on my wantlist. Same with Along Came a Spider. I see boot/counterfeit pressing of the STP album pop up from time to time. I believe the Music in Vinyl pressing is the only officially available version but since it’s an import the prices sometimes aren’t justifiable. I would kill for an official pressing of Sonic Boom. There have been LOTS of counterfeit pressings on the market, sometimes with or without the gatefold and extras. I’ve settled for one of them for $25 as a basic placeholder until I could get a legit pressing or it gets properly reissues. All the best man!

I JUST FOUND THE FOLLOWING AND BOUGHT IT TODAY. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS A THING. THIS IS A SOUNDTRACK I HAD BEEN HOPING WOULD BE PRESSED ON VINYL SINCE 2014, WHEN THIS GAME CAME OUT, AND IT IS:
'THE MUSIC OF DESTINY, VOLUME 1'.
I bought the Glacier White PS4 (which came with the game), AND THE SOUNDTRACK IS SPECTACULAR! One of the best Soundtracks ever written for a Video Game and listening to this is going to be a trip down memory lane, because of the great friends I made through this game and the experiences we had as a Fireteam! Anyway, there are a lot of caps in this comment because this discovery shook me LOL. This 6X LP Boxed Set was released in 2018, but I bought it for $600 on Ebay because it was sold out everywhere else. This is THE CROWN JEWEL of my collection so far!

Bought a record by a band named Sabre a few months back. Album name is Keeper of the Sword. Never heard of them I just got it because it looked like it was my kind of music. You know 80s rock. Lol. I paid 6 whole dollars. The record is mint. Looks like it was never played. Turns out it was self released by some active duty guys stationed in Germany in 1985. Only 500 copies made. It lists for 339 bucks on Discogs. One of the band members wrote a nice story about the band on the Discogs site. By far my best score ever. And the music is really good as well.

I've definitely seen some of the more recent purchases go up madly in "value": the top album has to be the 2013 pressing of Marilyn Manson Antichrist Superstar that I picked up from Hot Topic (!) for $20. The album now sells for $350-$400 on Discogs. I did see a copy sell for $250 at a "local" record store but I am not sure of the condition of that record. Second would have to be the 2010 ORG pressing of Nevermind. I have kept it sealed and in that condition, it is going for $215 on Discogs.
No bigger regret for me than wishing that I had Neil Young's Le Noise on vinyl still... long story. It's not his best but the price on a short run has gone nuts. Great video & idea. I'm looking forward to digging into your channel.

I wish I had known about Audioslave back in 2005. I actually like their sound... And I also was so close to buying the Kiss - Sonic Boom LP in a brick and mortar store, but didn't think I'd like it. I should have listened to it online, because I would have bought it! :(

Here’s the tops from my collection:
    1. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magick (2011 RSD Black Friday 20th Anniversary Edition on red vinyl). Paid $32 for it, and at the time that seemed like a crazy expensive price. That was in the fairly early days of RSD when not every record was $25+. That’s one of my favorite albums though, so I sucked it up and bought it. Median on Discogs now is $110.
    2. Red Hot Chili Peppers - I’m Beside You (RSD Black Friday 2013 release “limited” to 5000 copies): Again, I’m a big RHCP fan, so I bought this, but I remember not being happy that it was fairly expensive, and 5000 copies seemed like a hell of a lot so I was afraid it wasn’t even going to be worth what I paid for it. I remember at the time there was no shortage of copies of that, it was a b-sides comp for a Frusciante-less album that didn’t exactly blow up like their past albums had. Median price now? $103, so what the hell do I know?
    3. City And Colour - Bring Me Your Love ( 2016 Limited Edition, Reissue, Clear w/ Orange, Pink, and Oxblood Splatter): Only 400 of these were made, I ordered two copies from the City And Colour website for $20 each. Ended up selling my spare copy for $40 to a friend of mine who’s a huge City And Colour fan. I was just happy that I got all my money back, so in essence I got my copy of the album free. Median price on it is now $99.
    4. Tyler Childers - Purgatory: This was one of those special releases on pink vinyl that comes out each year for breast cancer awareness; this one came out in 2018. I bought it just because I really like Tyler Childers. I paid $18.98 for it and median now is $98. As valuable as this is, I have a regular pressing of the album signed by Tyler Childers so obviously that one means more to me.
    5. Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday: This came out in 2010 on pink vinyl, and at the moment is the only pressing on vinyl. I got this one for $9.99 at Half Price Books earlier this year, and I bought it strictly to flip at some point. I have no idea why HPB had it priced at only $9.99, but the median price is $90 so I thank them for that. Not really a Nicki Minaj fan so I will have no problems whatsoever getting rid of this when I finally get around to selling it.
Honorable Mention: Not from the last 10 years, but my best return on investment ever. A few years ago I found a copy of The Wooden Glass Recorded Live by The Wooden Glass feat. Billy Wooten for $1 at Half Price Books. If you have no idea what that is you’re forgiven. It’s a private press jazz record put out by Billy Wooten, an Indianapolis-based jazz musician, in 1972. No idea how many copies were ever made, but I’m guessing under 1000. In 2001, Stones Throw Records put out a release called The Funky 16 Corners which compiled lots of rare and obscure funk/soul/jazz type stuff, and one of the tracks is from that Wooden Glass LP. That drove the demand for that album through the roof. Like I said, I found my copy for $1 at HPB through another massive pricing error on their part, but as rare as this album is, I don’t blame them for not knowing what it was and can’t imagine it was in their computers. A few months later I sold the record to somebody locally for $600. Could’ve gotten more if I sold on Discogs probably, but I wasn’t turning down $600 cash in hand. One of those dream scenarios I don’t ever expect to happen again!

Interesting video man. I used to work at HMV music store in England in the 90's. My boss asked me one day if I was buying any of the Oasis albums before they sold out. I laughed and reminded him they're crap and he informed me about how few had been pressed. I couldn't see it myself so I declined, he bought 10 sealed "definitely maybe" and 10 sealed "what's the story...". They were about 15 pounds each I think plus he was the store manager and if I remember it right he got 20 % staff discount. Have you seen the value of these albums now? I kick myself regularly for missing out. Oh and as a side note thanks for rehoming our Royal family Canada, we have some more whenever you're ready for them lol. They are very expensive and not really of any use whatsoever for any purpose on Earth but if you want more of 'em we got 'em.

I picked up The Breeders Last Splash LSXX boxset for $100 Australian a few years ago. That's worth double or triple that now.
I recently paid stupid money for The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie boxset. Silly thing is for months I had seen it at a much cheaper price, but I ummed and ahhed about it too long.

I have one or two minor rarities, but don't purchase to re-sell. I was looking at the Kiss Red Vinyl Re-issues in the UK late 1977 on Discogs. My friend had Dressed to Kill on Red Vinyl. The single albums sell for about £80-£90 now. I also found out that Love Gun was issued the same year on Blue Vinyl. Have you heard of The Hollywood Stars. They recorded a rough album in 74 which was not released until 2013 on LP. It contained the original versions of King of the Night-time World (Kiss) and Escape (Alice Cooper). Both co-wrote by Kim Fowley. The connection Bob Ezrin. Both original songs and more are on TH-cam. Interesting and thanks Frank for helping me find this out.

I'd say the two most valuable records in my collection would be TSOL by Shad. Difficult to find even back then. Found it at Value Village for the standard LP price of $2 CAD. The second one would be Nickel Creek's debut album. Was only available on Record Store Day 2011. I also found it at Value Village for $2 CAD. I know CDs aren't considered here, but my most valuable CD is The Edge by Cindy Cruse. Funnily enough, I found it basically the day that Value Village changed the price of a CD from 3 to 2 bucks. It shocked me to find out how much it typically sold for too. Of course, I don't collect to re-sell, but it's always awesome finding a rare record for super cheap. :)

First time I noticed this was when I saw my copy of Sade's Lover's Rock (2010 MOV's reissue), which I bought sealed a couple of years ago for 20/25 usd (in Argentina, where imported records are really expensive!) going for usd 120 or more on Discogs. Another one is In Flame's Colony's 2014 reissue, I paid 19 euro for it in Spain in 2017, and now they're selling it for 70 euro. But everything is a matter of offer vs. demand so I guess it makes sense.

I bought the Van Halen ADKOT when it was first released. I didn't even know it was available on vinyl. I was on vacation in Daytona Beach, FL and there was a record store I saw on the main strip so I stopped in and they had the Van Halen for sale for I believe $25.00 brand new. I already had the CD but I just wanted it on vinyl so I bought it. Glad I did. Sonic Boom I bought for $60.00 off Discogs new about 8 years ago on yellow marble vinyl with gatefold and poster. I did not realize it was a counterfeit but even the counterfeits are still expensive. Another that I do have is the Gremlins soundtrack from Mondo (swirl vinyl color variant). Bought when it first came out for $35.00. Now its about $100 on Discogs. Oh, and the red marble reissue of Kiss Destroyer from Sound Of Vinyl. I almost bought two of those thinking the value would go up. I got it for $35 but today its going for over $100 on Discogs.

I remember when I first discovered Ramshackle Glory. I had to have their first album (from 2012) on vinyl but they were sold out everywhere & the cheapest ones on discogs were around $40 at the time. I found by accident one of the labels that helped release it & they had only one or two copies left. Bought one for $15 (shipping included). It averages $150-160 on discogs. Not the most expensive record, but the most expensive one in my collection.

Super interesting, Frank. I've noticed some older CDs in my collection are up for resale on Amazon for well over 100 bucks sometimes. Is that an accurate indicator of value? I'm like you, though, in that I'm reluctant to part with them.

    • @Channel33RPM
      @Channel33RPM  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Scott! Some of the Amazon re-sale prices are crazy, and I don't think an accurate indicator of value. A better indicator would be to research the title at Discogs.com or check recent sold (not asking) prices on eBay. Some CDs certainly are getting up there in value. Hope all is well. Happy belated Canada Day!

The current album from Stryper in yellow vinyl is going for $115 on Discogs. A vinyl record of video game music (Mega Man: The Best of 1-10 in red multi-splatter vinyl) is going for nearly $150. I paid more for Blackstar by David Bowie than it is going for on Discogs (and if I waited, I could have picked it up in a store than spend nearly fifty dollars to have it shipped.)
Going back about newer releases going for more, I picked up the classic Stryper albums when I was first getting into vinyl, and I probably spent less than ten dollars. One of the albums was actually sealed. The newer albums go for much more due to the limited edition status.

As a bloke who buys most of my LPS from charity shops I wouldn't pay anywhere near those prices for any album I wouldn't buy any of those if they were £1 each as they are not my kind of music but even in UK charity shops some vinyl are being put up at extortionate prices because vinyl is making a comeback these shops need to be more realistic with their prices I would never pay more than £3 for a second hand album to me these are rip off prices wherever they get their information about them from E.G. DISCOGS etc

The most valuable non-boxed set in my collection in a near mint state is "Say I am You" by folk duo The Weepies from RSD 2016. It is limited to 750 copies in orange vinyl and signed. I got it on release for about $15 US and it's median price is now $125 and max is $245. I am also surprised at the price of the mono Beatles releases, Sgt Pepper has a median of $115 and 4 others have medians of $75 or greater. The most valuable record sets, I have are the two Third Man Rise and Fall of Paramount Records collections, but they couldn't be called traditional box set, at an average of $250 each. My most valuable traditional box set is the Belle & Sebastian Jeepster singles collection that averages $145.
