Curating My Vinyl Record Collection - Downsizing Part 3

  • Curating my vinyl record collection had been on my radar months ago. I made a few videos about downsizing and curating my vinyl record collection last year and several people have asked how it is going. I didn't get all that far, but was able to cull about 300 records out of 2,000 that I just wouldn't likely play again. Space is at a premium, especially with my buying habits, and the old "one record in, one record out" idea wasn't working in my favor. Those 300 are still waiting for their ride to the charity shop 6 months later.
    In this video, i show a bit of what's happening on the other end. I've been picking records at random, cleaning and playing them, and if they meet my requirements for a permanent home, they are re-sleeved and put on new shelving. This has been a great way to revisit some favorites, return to some new arrivals, and spend more time enjoying music. In this fairly lengthy video, you can see a small portion of what has been chosen thus far. I set a chapter stop for each box full if you don't want to see the whole video at once. Hope you enjoy it!

      Hi Chris! I'm glad you enjoyed this peek into my collection. It just skims the surface, with mostly thinks I've reviewed that I loved, some great sounding audiophile discs important jazz and classical. I guess it is a bit eclectic! If this one does well I'll do another update as I get further along in my project!

    Always appreciate your great tips. Thank you. I think most record collectors have a similar aversion to letting go. You never know when the time will come when you just have to listen to a particular record. My approach began and ended with removing the unlistenable/damaged records (after wet vac and ultrasound cleaning of course).

    Well, Scott so much for my good intentions, ha! I’d sorted out just 3 records I thought could go back to a charity shop one day soon. However this morning I visited one I’d not been in for a couple of weeks and yes, you guessed it, came back with another 11, all priced at £1 individually. Trouble is they were too nice to resist 😄.

      @@ThePressingMatters They are all in really good condition but just needed a clean. As I walked up to them the first two were Villa-Lobos on HMV (ALP 1603) and then Erik Satie (EMI/HMV ASD 2389) neither of which composers I had in my collection. There were more HMV ones, a few Decca ones and a couple of nice but budget label ones. Nothing outstanding in value but still, good additions to my classical collection.

    Lots of killer records there Scott. I want a good pressing of Getz/Gilberto and Steely Dan Aja. I've got Gaucho on vinyl but it's not the best pressing but it's not bad. I love the record though. I'm also getting into Duke Ellington been listening to some of his big band work over the past week.

      You can't do too much better than the Acoustic Sounds Series 33, unless you get the 45. It's great for Getz Gilberto. The 33 is very reasonably priced. For Aja, some swear by original AB matrix pressings, but I want my Aja super clean and snapped up the Cisco when it came out. I'm definitely in for Aja and Gaucho on UHQR. I have a Robert Ludwig mastered Original US Of Gaucho that is mighty fine. You could probably find a clean original if that. Ellington is a joy to explore. I've never been disappointed with any I've bought. The Ellington at Newport was just repressed by MOFI.

    My take on downsizing, be it LPs or clothes, or watches: If you are not going to actually play a record (or wear something) then pass it on. I now only have about 300 records, but I play most of them.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is so true, and I'm very good about it in other aspects - clothes etc. Records have always been a bit harder for me, but I am making strides. I had two garage sales where I sold off a lot of records that I wasn't going to listen to, then I attempted to get rid of doubles and triple copies bu choosing the best one to keep. Now I have a master list of what I truly want to have in my collection and add a title from the list of it comes out in a high quality mastering. The cleaning and listening I did to come to this selection shown in the video is a great way for me to hear these again on updated system and make a determination. Should it stay or should it go. 300 is probably plenty, but I have enough space for 2,000 and that's my goal. If I can pare it down to that I'll have gotten rid of about the same amount. 4,000 is just ridiculous for me - even if I wanted to I couldn't listen to all of them. So a well thought out selection of the best available pressings is how I'm attempting this. I'll keep you updated!

This was on the TAS list but they are not that hard to find. Well worth seeking out that one, Percussion Music, Ancient Voices of Children.. if you like percussion you'll love George Crumb.
      The boxes in the video are one of the best investments I made for my collection. They are from Bags Unlimited and they are called Ultrabox. They are corrugated plastic, acid free material and brilliantly constructed. They have black lids. They store about 60 single LPs and are the perfect weight once loaded. Just right to carry. The handles are cut outs. I've had my original set for a decade and still use them! They are essential to move a collection. They can be stacked up to three high with no issues. They are a bit pricy but you'll have them forever. I should do a video on them.

It's kind of nice to flip through rather than stare at spines trying to figure what to play next. Someday I'm going to design a browser bin to top a kallax 2x4 on its side. I don't know why ikea hasn't tried it lol. They'd sell a ton of them.
      One Nonesuch to look for is Charles Wuorinen Chamber Concerto and Ringing Changes for Percussion Ensemble H-71263. Yes The Aubort/Nickrenz team was awesome. They have great stuff on other labels too, including some of those Vox Boxes. I'll cover those at some point too!

    I have a real dilemma; I could easily get rid of half my collection but these are not in high demand. These records are not junk and in great condition but no one wants big band and some of the great artists of the past. I gave away at least 200 to my niece's husband but he doesn't need any more. Sad to say; last winter I took a bunch of old classical out of their jackets and chucked them all and as many know, vinyl is not recyclable. I sell on discogs and I know what I can make a profit on and I can be selective on what I keep. Do you have any suggestions of places that don't mind taking records that are in good shape but not high demand? I appreciate all your videos!

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a day and check around your area - hit up some thrift and vintage stores. If you see one that seems to feature vinyl. Hip or independent charity stores may be your best bet. Donate and get a deduction on taxes. Of course it has to be a charity for that. I had se real garage sales, that if advertised well, attract a lot of people and you never know what they might buy. The classical is a hard sell, opera even harder. Price it at a buck and it should move. If the local stores hear about your sale they will probably come as well. eBay resellers show up too and you might be able to do a bulk deal. But if making money is not a priority, donate to a good charity.

    Heh, just when I am totally convinced that you only like Classical and such, you pull out Bridge of Sighs and say it is one of your favourites! 😲 How about that! I have the 1st UK pressings of his first 4 albums I think. The sound quality is excellent. And YES! BoS is just about one of *THE* best albums ever. Being a guitar player and composer myself (using both terms VERY loosely) Robin Trower is indeed one of my very favourite guitar players, probably the best of that Hendrix/Blues style (next to Hendrix of course) With Frank Zappa, Buckethead, & Adrian Belew being the others.
    I actually traded a DCC Aqualung, which I honestly never cared for and thought it sounded rather lifeless, for a very nice, mint MFSL of Into the Labyrinth which does indeed sound bloody amazing! For that trade, I also got the UK R.A.Y.E.S pressing of Rush's Permanent Waves which sounds fantastic, and also a nice, clean 1st US pressing of Cannonball Adderley's Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. Not a bad trade for an album that I didn't like (I *DO* very much like the sound of the MFSL pressing of Aqualung though, much more vibrant and lively!) Oh, and I frigg'n *LOVE* Laurie Anderson's Mr. Heartbreak!👍 I saw that tour and it seriously blew my mind! Out of my over 2500 vinyl albums and even my over 8000 FLAC albums, I would say that Mr. Heartbreak would easily be in my personal top 20 all time best albums! Interested to hear your thoughts on quality control throughout your years of collecting. Been collecting for about 2 years, and my tolerance for pressing flaws has improved a lot, but nonetheless it frustrates me a little. Most records I buy will have some flaws (e.g. a small scratch causing some ticks, dimples causing pops) and in the past I would return lots of records, but nowadays I accept most flaws as the nature of the beast and try not let it get to me. I only return records if something is majorly defective (e.g. no fill). However, sometimes when I buy a record which is a pristine pressing, super quiet vinyl, but then there is a mark tainting just one track, that’ll really frustrate me.
    Are these sorts of flaws something that has plagued mainstream releases in the past, or do you think this is becoming more apparent in modern vinyl releases ?
    A lot of people will say that you have to know your pressing plants, yet I’ve had issues with all of them.
    People rave on about RTI and Pallas, but bash MPO and GZ, for example. In my experience, RTI has been the best, with the exception of one severely non-filled record, and GZ has been hit and miss, as has MPO, and Pallas has been in most cases really below average, leading to a couple returns.
    Bear in mind, I’m referring to your standard priced record (around $50 AUD). All MOFI and AP records I’ve purchased (around $140 AUD) have been great, no issues there.
    Keen to hear your thoughts on this.
    Great channel btw, always providing interesting content.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wanted to reply to both of the above comments. Quality control is a big issue for me. Sometimes I ask myself is it worth it. Digital solved so many of these problems. Yet I still put myself through the aggravation of getting less than perfect records and having to go through exchanges. I put up with it because when it's right, it's extraordinary. Most of my peak listening experiences have been with a vinyl record. Many of those happened recently too. I am super picky about vinyl. Anything with a noise that can't be removed by cleaning goes back. Once I'm satisfied with the copy it's in my permanent collection. This video is kind of reflective of that. Everything here passed my stringent standards. That why you see so few originals unless I bought them on release. I don't enjoy used vinyl usually. So I focus on the titles I want, research the best reissues, and get those. I will give up a bit of magic of an original for a clean, well pressed and mastered reissue. I generally have great luck with RTI, followed by generally great from QRP, and mostly good to great from Optimal and others. I've returned more Optimal than any other. That period when the Blue Note Classics were coming out with non fill was a bad spell for them. If it's a pricy UHQR or One Step, i make no exceptions - it has to be perfect.
      Vinyl is a pain but I am more immersed in the music with it vs. digital, so I understand that going in. It's an imperfect medium, and the companies mentioned are trying their best to meet the mark. It's actually a great time to be into vinyl!

      @@ThePressingMatters Awesome reply, I really appreciate hearing your thoughts. When it comes to the records I’ve kept but have had some flaws, I’ve found myself so immersed in enjoying the music that I’ll raise an eyebrow when I can hear those annoying ticks that I know are there, but then seem to forget about it straight after. Having a physical copy of a favourite record of mine is what means the most to me. I have a decent set up (Pro-Ject Debut Pro w MOFI UltraPhono Pre-Amp) which sounds great, but the experience of going to the record store and finding something awesome is more the appeal for me.
      My recent example, Steve Hiett- Down on the Road by the Beach, reissue (FANTASTIC album and so worth checking out, I feel you would enjoy) is a silent record pressed by Record Industry, but one record has a mark causing about maybe 6 ticks on one track. Annoying, but I’ve lived with it. Sometimes I’ve returned a record over something small and gotten something worse. However, if a record is truly awful (e.g. Pink Floyd Animals 2018 remix was truly unlistenable) it will definitely go back. When I was returning every record with a flaw, it was getting to the point where I was frustrated with records more often than not and was looking out for the flaws rather than enjoying the music. So yes, whilst annoying that this shouldn’t happen, I’ve just accepted it as a limitation of the medium. It should be better, but frankly I don’t know why it isn’t.
      Of course, If I bought lots of audiophile label records I’d (hopefully!) have much less issues, but I forgot to mention that even with AP, every record I’ve put from them has a major seam split in the gatefold. Really nasty damage. I rang the seller and they said all the AP products they receive are like this, and it is because of how they are shipped. So frustrating !
      Even for the $255 AUD I paid for the Thriller One Step, you’d think the packaging would be a bit nicer? No extras? The exact same contents as your run-of-the mill copy of Thriller? Really? At least the pressing was really nice and sounds great.
      “Oh well” is my response to a lot of this. Nonetheless, I love my records, they always get played and I know they’ll be with me forever. And you’re right, when a record is perfect its something special, and it keeps the hunt for fantastic records alive. This community for discussion is also great, and hence all the attributes of collecting records can now have me overlook some of the flaws of the medium (mostly!)
      Cheers!

      @@ThePressingMatters Further, if I may ask, what has been your luck with getting good records? In other words, how many new records are you having to return?

      @@Levi-ek4el I'd say I exchange about 20% for various problems. I use Amazon where possible because of this. With Prime, the shipping is all free and it's hassle free. Music Direct Ana AP have been good about exchanges. I did exchange quite a few One Steps and one or two UhQRs. Many Blue Note Classics and only a couple of Tone Poets or Acoustic Sounds Series. The Prestige Series has been flawless. I've had to exchange a few Craft reissues.

      @Nicholas it will be interesting to see how this new plant does. I'm hoping it will alleviate the stress at RTI and QRP so everyone can slow down a bit and put more attention into quality control. I did not know that the Tone Poets were double checked at RatI with their own QC person. That makes sense and I've said in many videos they must have a second round of QC checks because Tone Poets do tend to be problem free in comparison to RTIs other output. I think it's pretty obvious MOFI does not have a similar arrangement for the One Steps. Hopefully that will change once the new plant is up and running. Great discussion, thank you Nicholas!

      That's one reason they are still here. When I showed what was going in the outgoing boxes, several viewers expressed interest in one or two titles I'm trying to think of a way to have a virtual garage sale, where we can flip through everything on a livestream and people can grab what they want for a low price, like $1 or $2 each. Or say a box of any 10 titles shipped within the US for $25.
