To this day, Jimmy considers Neil and Tim Finn family. So much so, that he lovingly calls them the “Finnlaws”. They regularly holiday / work holiday with each other brother here in Australia and in New Zealand. Jimmies daughter, EJ (Eliza-Jane) and her husband met when they were both working with Neil’s sons, Liam and Elroy’s band.

I watched this live on TV when the concert happened, a fund-raiser for the Ethiopian famine. To see 2 iconic acts singing the song of a 3rd iconic act was pretty special, esp with the connection of Crowded House bass player Nick Seymour being the brother of the writer of the song Mark Seymour of Hunters & Collectors

Hey there Nic - just wanted to point out that Crowded House isn't really Australian. As much as we love them to bits, they're a New Zealand band m8. We consider them "adopted Aussies" and their music is played here at every national Aussie holiday, but gotta recognise our neighbours and their talents.

    • @markwaters3050

Ahem, Split Enz were a Kiwi band... Crowded House was a band of mixed origin of its members. Some Kiwi, some not, but I'll let Neil say where the band was formed (on Aussie soil or that of New Zealand!).

@@markwaters3050 Sorry, but I, and a lot of Aussies consider them a Kiwi band, I mean, fair suck of the sav here. The Finn brothers wrote most of the material, were the vocals and lead singer, so you gotta let the Kiwi's have this one sorry m8......I'm a true blue Aussie, so I believe in a fair go and recognition when deserved. I wouldn't like it if they laid claim to Billy Thorpe just coz he wrote a couple of tunes over there. You're entitled to your opinion, but please don't bag me for mine m8. Have a good one

Tim and Neil were in "the Enz" together, but not Crowded House, and I don't think that Tim wrote many, if any, songs for Crowded House. By the end of Split Enz, Tim was a solo artist.

I think everyone means well with this recurring argument, not wanting to deny credit where it's due, but I don't think this needs to be decided one way or the other. They're an ANZ band (or NZA if it makes you happier). They've qualified for and won awards from both country's music industries. I don't see why there's a need to try to force New Zealanders to be Australian or vice versa, the band was/is mixed and they have always been active in both countries. Neil is undoubtedly the driving and creative force and all the members contributed to their sound and personality, so forcing them all rigidly into only one country or the other is surely doing them a disservice? Both New Zealanders and Australians can be proud of them.
(Edit: But I mean, fair enough you'd get annoyed if you were a New Zealander and never heard the NZ side acknowledged. As an Aussie who grew up with them, I've always heard them referred to as a NZ+Aus band so I'm always a bit baffled that years later this argument over it started popping up on the internet!)

Neil Finn always says he considers himself Australian and refers to the song Four Seasons in One Day and his early experience of Melbourne. The other two members of Crowded House are/were Australian. With the exception of Olivia, the others came out from the UK as what were referred to in the day as "10 pound Poms" - as did the Bee Gees. They got their start in Australia where there wasn't so much competition and were able to make it big before going either to the UK or to the USA. Barry Gibb said they chose to live in Florida in the USA because it reminded him of living in Queensland, Australia. The Bee Gees' first No. 1 hit - Spicks and Specks - was recorded in Australia.

What's the point of these types of comments? Jimmy Barnes IS Australian. Country of birth means nothing if you are raised in Australia. Or if you spend your formative years here. Or if you move over and become a citizen.
It's where the band started. Country of birth played zero part in their career or their talent.
30 percent of Australians were born overseas.
John and Olivia grew up in Australia from a very young age. John is FROM Australia. AC/DC IS an Australian band.
As for Crowded house even Neil Finn has gone on record in the past to say they're an Australian band. He might be from New Zealand but two of the founding members were Australian and they were formed in Australia, where they all lived.
No one ever said Neil Finn himself was Australian.🤷‍♀️
The lead singer of a band isn't the entire band, their nationality alone doesn't denote where a band is from or was formed.
