    The Minister for the Environment at the time was Peter Garrett, lead singer of Midnight Oil.

      And after all the political commentary he threw into the Oils songs he sold out to the establishment. See old growth logging in Tasmania.

    I was at this concert. The tickets were only $20, the concert started about midday and finished at about 11 pm - 11 solid hours of great music. It was a showcase of Australian music and included bands who had re-formed just for the concert like H&C, Oils, Split Enz and Crowded House, with a few international acts thrown in as well. The best $20 I ever spent.

      Was there, through the rain in the morning watching the Sydney half on the big screen in sunshine, but then the Finn family band came on and belted out Always take the weather with you, the clouds parted in Melbourne, the sun started to shine.
      It seemed to move to Sydney after that, maybe Jet took it with them to Sydney

    Yep! This is another Aussie national anthem. We are a nation of travellers so we are a nation of 'farewell' tellers. And this song suits that. It has also become a song for comfort in hard times - as in the case of this performance to raise money for the bushfires.

    Mark Seymour, this singer, is the brother of Nick Seymour, the bass player of Crowded House. I once got see Crowded House cover this at a venue called.... ummmmm 'The Venue', which was a run down, repurposed ice rink. The stage was, like 15 feet tall, because the audience was standing in the bottom of the tub where the ice used to be. Neil Finn did the first verse, then Mark Seymour hit the stage, sharing a mike with his brother and took over main vocal duties from Neil Finn. Did the audience go crazy? Did they ever...........

    The comment about "lets see what the environment minister is wearing" is a reference to Peter Garret coming on next with his band Midnight Oil....you watched them a few days ago where the bald guy was dancing funny on stage and brought up 3 people to play insturments with him. It was an old one..."beds are burning" is what they did. He was a Govt. minister in the early to mid 2000s

    Someone once said that this is the only song Aussie men are allowed to shed a tear over. Much covered song, including by Pearl Jam. Worth looking at the video of when Eddie Vedder got Mark Seymour up on stage to sing it as a duet, apparently the first time they had met. Also, for something very different, worth checking out the cover by the Doug Anthony All Stars (DAAS). A very talented comedy troupe and their cover is staggering.

    Sound Relief was 2 simultaneous concerts in Melbourne and Sydney, 2 bands played at both. The concerts were put together very quickly by the late Michael Gudinski to raise money for the victims of the devastating Black Saturday fires and floods in Australia.
    The minister for environment he speaks of is Peter Garrett who was serving in the federal parliament but brought is band Midnight Oil out of retirement for this one of gig.
    What this clip doesn't really show is just how loud the 80,000 people in Melbourne were singing along with just about every song and it got louder as the day went on.

    • @alleycat8791
      @alleycat8791 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This song is not about a one night stand.
      Mark Seymour described writing for Human Frailty:
      I was in a relationship with a woman I was very much in love with and she was the inspiration. I wrote virtually all the lyrics on Human Frailty about my relationship with her...Throw Your Arms Around Me was the first song I wrote that wasn't angry. And because it was so out of the square, we didn't record it particularly well...One time, we played it at The Palace, to about 2,000 people who just went off. We finally got it right, so we recorded it again. I think we did about four versions of it.[6]
