      Kevin Vanhove - Agree with you that Vengerov’s rendition is SUPERLATIVE, but I would avoid using the word ‘best’, suggesting that any ranking is possible. At their level, each performer has a unique take on and interpretation of the piece. Technical virtuosity is yet another thing. Jansen is absolutely SUPERB here. And I do like hers next to Vengerov’s...

      She emotes and catharsizes in a huge way in this piece! Her intense and BIG vibrato is definitely part of that. Hilary is very mid-classical in her style, where Janine is very late-romantic. Whether you like one of the other better is a matter of preference; they're both amazing performers. Personally, I think Hilary's style suits Mozart better, and Janine does Sibelius better. Love the way she communicate with the other players, almost cried as she share her musical words (or world) with the violist at the first movement. she is so passionate, amazingly good at controlling dynamics and expressing emotions. Her interpretation of the form is above whatever I've been known. also could catch that this is one of the most excellent work by how the orchestral players watch and just appreciate her work in the middle or at the end of the play. they are smiling and to me seems like they are supporting her from the real heart. it must be they could feel her energy, passion and love to this masterpiece(with flawless playing). She plays as if she was full of the music or maybe the music herself.

    Janine is such a gifted musician, what makes her special to me is her commitment to chamber music. If you watch her play, she's always connected to the other musicians. Watch her working with the smaller groups, or solo winds. It brings the performance, in my opinion, to another level.

      Yes, I could say so. Nothing in it is wrong. But I feel it is a little diminishing. All that hard hard work, all compassion in music. And here we sit and just let our words go the easiest way. There is something in it I feel a little bit unjust. So easy it is so say or write something that is just stupid, bad, not even relevant, and think it has an impact on the world. And at the same time its so fun to have the opportunity to speak up, yes I can do it too! I think we shall be aware of our words and the way we use them. Most of you are very nice and clever people, with interesting thoughts, but I have met someones that have not been so nice. Guess my age? Im 158!

    • @staffanolofsson8201

      No Im not as old as Methusalem, that was a joke. But my thoughts today is about the team that is necessary to make us enjoy this fantastic music. The soundengineers, the cameramen. We take that for granted, but it surely is not so. For example, the camera that follows Janines violin in 24:07, back and forth, so nice, but also the work that we never think of. I have read criticism of the cameramens work, but never appreciation. So here comes my homage to all you people that makes it so easy for us to click and then be there, in the middle of the music, and in the middle of the orchestra. Thank you so much!

    We have been given two very fine recordings of Sibelius Violin Concerto recently, Hilary Hahns and Janine Jensens, and perheps our mission in the first place is not to judge whether the first or the second is the best, and than argue about it, as we often do. No, we shall instead think about how we connect to this music, and why we like it so much. That´s my simple advice.

      @@BjornWilliams And simply, how do you define "clean" Mr Ramirez? I myself very much like Hilary Hahn, but at the same time I like when it is an amount of dirt in music. Emotional dirt. And I think Janine is to prefer there. So it is of course a choice, but I prefer not to choose! Our own mentality will lead us to the right performer, at this moment it is Janine before Hilary, but I can change. And you will ask me what I mean with "dirt" in music? I dont know, perhaps a more romantic attitude, with more vibrato? And headbangs?

    • @staffanolofsson8201
      @staffanolofsson8201 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The nearest Janine Jansen comes to headbanging starts at 21:05 and ends at 23:00, and I like it! She has already more vibrato than Hilary, as you have noticed, but is she in this moment "better" than Hilary? The ones amongst you who ask that question are already lost in "the Sea of Comparison" , as I call it. Instead, enjoy the music.

I do not know exactly what happened, but after her it was loaned to Rosanne Philippens and Janine started using other violins. It could’ve been her choice to stop using it or the terms could’ve provided a limited period of use.

    One thing I noticed after watching Janine Jansen, Hilary Hahn and Maxim Vengerov's rendition of Sibelius violin concerto is every violinist really gives out different feelings. It makes me appreciate each of them even more as this is my most favourite classical piece. If I were to put one word for each of their performance, Maxim Vengerov's was passionate and Hilary Hahn's 2019 performance was melancholic. Janine Jansen's performance was a sense of stubbornness, in the first movement u can hear anger and frustration, which I never thought would make sense and sound so good. I usually prefer it being melancholic with a sense of longing, because that was what the melody of the first movement sounded for me.

    I like both Hilary’s and Janine’s renditions. Hilary has this robust, untouchable tone when it comes to this piece whereas Janine has this vulnerable, yet beautiful tone. If I HAD to choose I would go for Hilary solely because that robust yet emotional performance is so so hard to achieve when it comes to a piece like this. But PLEASE remember both these renditions are both stunning and beautiful and it’s so so hard to draw these distinctions. It’s such a hard concerto to play and the fact that they can even tonalise them in a way which characterises them is simply stunning. Honestly I think that my favourite rendition is that of Vengerov’s solely because of the power and emotional intuition poured into it

    I hope that I, living next to Finland (in Sweden), can mail you this perhaps odd comment about the northern woods. I mailed the same comment when I heard Hilary Hahns fantastic interpretation. Of course Sibelius music is music in itself, but it helps a lot if you associate it with nature, so I think, and especially if you can see the neverending forests and the seas that are uncountable for your inner sight:
    "I have been out in Finlands forests, and I come home with a feeling of longing, abandonment, agony, but also hope, strength and confidence. It is mixed, like in Lemminkäinens Return, he who has recently met the Swan of Tuonela but now happily returns to life. And if you listen you can hear all that in Sibelius works. Also in the violin concerto. The songs of the woods, miles and miles away, the longing, the yearning.Thats what fascinates me when I listen to this music." (Kalevala is Finlands own special ancient story).
    Janine Jansen can express that feeling very well in her music and Im grateful for her playing. So simple and so overwhelming is it.

    Try to listen to the 2nd movement while reading this extract from a book wrote by my writer friend:
    "Crystalline tears fell from her eyes and ran down her face. She wiped her tears by caressing her face with her white hands and, always with these, she tried to cover her tears to hide it."

    I think Janine Jansen has very good ear, may be different than all violinist. her playing like she can hear the notes in his ear before playing the notes. and its interpretation is also very unusual. also her technic is very natural. anyway totally great performance very satisfying like old times.

      @kevinwilson124 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I must say that this interpretation is by far the best for me! Janine has a brilliant way of drawing out the darkness to this piece and it captures the essence of it!

    It is a wonderful performance - thank you for posting.
    Interestingly, at 33:26 I incorrectly thought she played a wrong note - then I checked other recordings and they all play the same high note on the second run. Everyone, that is, except Heifetz, whose recording I was used to hearing. Does that mean Heifetz changed the music at that point, or does Sibelius actually give the soloist some sort of choice?

  • @staffanolofsson8201

    It is not a competition, mark that well, both Janine and Hilary are extremely good, and they hopefully have their own backyards where they can be free, but if you compare Hilarys second movement with Janines, you can see a different approch. I like them both, but if I have to chose I like Janines emotional approach more than Hilarys more classical and untouchable version. Even if she is a Goddess! And I suggest you all to listen to Janine in the second movement.
    It starts at 16:58

    • @staffanolofsson8201
      @staffanolofsson8201 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I have changed opinion. Again! Hilary has all that compassion too in the second movement, it is just that she doesn´t move around so much as Janine. And technically she is more brillant than Janine. So dont listen to me, listen yourself.

    • @staffanolofsson8201
      @staffanolofsson8201 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Again, I´ve changed back to Janine. So dont follow me, follow the music. And yes: this was a joke.

    • @nadianadler1810
      @nadianadler1810 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Janine is "hot" in her playing and Hillary is "cold". The image and feel of a "Goddess" does not appeal to me in music. I enjoy performances by emotional, warm people.

    • @MD-md4th
      @MD-md4th 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hilary is technically brilliant, but machine-like.

    • @nadianadler1810
      @nadianadler1810 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@staffanolofsson8201 Janine is absolutely brilliant technically, there is no comparison with Hilary. Both are good in that sense. Janine is much warmer in her expressivity. Hilary is ice-cold.

    I don't want to have prejudices but women give to this dazzling concerto a very special touch that makes me prefer with the girls its performance than with men. Sarah, Hillary (with Miko Franck), Janine, Sayaka... they make me tremble.

    well done to the sound engineer(s) - Jansen's interpretation relies a lot on keeping all the little spaces between the notes intact (e.g. the beginning of the 3rd mvmt) - and it's too easy for the sound engineers to just pave right over them.

    Many people don’t understand the point of listening to classical music. But in my opinion, Janine is the prime example of playing out her soul- she really becomes a part of that violin especially during the second movement. Her vibrato and her tone is just impeccable and beautiful. She is a seriously underrated artist.
