    Easily one of the hottest new trucks for 2019, the #JeepGladiator gets attention from everyone on the road. It's also one of the few new vehicles today to offer a 6-speed #ManualTransmission on a fully loaded version. We had yet to drive the #6MT a couple months ago but with a 285 HP V6, we wanted to see if #Jeep makes the #Gladiator better with the stick or should most buyers just spend an extra $2,000 for the 8-speed automatic?

      Not all manual transmissions are fun. Some don't like being rushed because of rev hang, lazy throttle or a lack of elasticity. Some just have terrible feel and are hard to control and/or engage. Some are just geared weird and make getting up to speed less enjoyable. Sadly, a lot of modern manual transmissions are this way.

      We have a Manual JK at home. A Manual JT will be in the driveway in a few months for sure. Hate driving any automatic Wrangler if any kind. We like out manuals simply because you actually have full control and connection of what's happening in the vehicle.

      100%. You are buying basically a Wrangler. You get a manual or you turn in that man card. It is not meant to be fast. Show me another truck/SUV that you can take the roof and doors off. I would rather not hear the exhaust that much, if you drive standard you know when to shift.

    I drove a JLU last month with the automatic. The automatic is ok but I found it feels fast mostly because it will aggressively downshift 3-4 gears when you out your foot down. I’m still interested in driving the manual for myself because maybe shifting more aggressively is the answer to the “sluggish” problem.

    Drove a 2001 TJ Sahara with a MT off and on. The shifter was more like a tractor or old school truck, but I loved it. The top / roof logistics of the gladiator sound a bit annoying. If / when they become available, I'd have a bra-style cover ready to put on in the event of rain or even if the sun was getting to be too much. Having the Jeep's roof off is overrated -- I always found that having all windows down / out and the roof up to be the best of both worlds.
    Edit: Possibly with the Gladiator the gear ratios are such that torque is not really available unless you downshift a bit? I found that I had to shift down in order to pass with the TJ. Fifth gear was exclusively for highway speeds to keep the revs down and save fuel. For me, the Jeep experience was all about the open air, driver height, occasional towing and light off-roading for farm utility purposes. If I want to hear the engine in my automotive purchase, I'll pick up a WRX and throw on an after market exhaust. Or a big turbo-diesel pick-up. :)
    Jeep owners are a great bunch and *always* wave. It is the best!

It is a real head turner. Mine is an automatic. It was expensive but I plan to have it for a very long time. I thought my 89 Cherokee was expensive when I bought it but it turned out to be the best car I have ever owned. It still turns heads and yesterday the owner of an off road shop offered me $12000 for it. I turned him down.

    I think some reviewers of this manual are a little afraid to rev this engine (mainly downshifting) and it’s power is at higher RPMs. Here we saw 40+ being hit in second but later gunning it in 3rd at 35 was lethargic? Well yeah. It’s not building real HP until we’ll after 4K..almost 5K RPMs.

    Unless it's for a very sporty car, I much prefer a little slowing steering for better control. As long as it doesn't have a dead spot on center, I find slow steering not only more comfortable, I find it easier to point the vehicle at higher speeds. With a quick and hyper precise rack, a sneeze or a twitch of your toe will cause you to veer because they're too quick overly sensitive. Also, slight imputes are easier to make with slower racks, allow you to adjust more precisely. IMO, quick steering speed is like stiff suspension, heavy clutches or heavy steering, or even noisy exhaust. Some people associate them with "sporty", but it doesn't really mean the vehicle drivers better.

    I've never had an issue with acceleration of my JL. It has a steady powerful pull through all the gears . I think the 4th gear is just phenomenal and is exceptionally effective when accelerating in the range of 70 - 100km/h and merging onto the highway torrent of speeding cars .The engine really kicks in right around 2500 rpm and propels the 2 tons of solid steel like a speeding bullet. I will say I wish it had longer 1st shift but I'm sure many true off road riders appreciate the brute force of the 1st gear. I guess I worry more about burning the clutch.Just take a test drive , it may surpass your expectation but only if you can afford it.

  • @JakeThiewes
    @JakeThiewes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I drove this exact Gladiator back-to-back with an automatic Rubicon at a local media event, before Sofyan got it. His comments are spot on, the gearing in the manual (transmission) is just poorly chosen for street driving and acceleration. All Rubicons get the 4.10 axle gearing, but the ZF 8-speed auto is way better suited for on-road conditions, and has some super short low gears that help with off the line accel. Regardless of 0-60 times, the automatic feels significantly peppier throughout the rev and speed range.
    On the plus side, the pedals are spaced such that you can heel-toe it through an off-ramp like a boss.

I’ve owned manuals my whole life (jeeps, cars, you name it) and the gearing and clutch are the worst. Mainly it’s the gearing. I’ve been looking to trade for the EcoDiesel version which only comes with the automatic.

    Surprised your were in 4hi parked on the road . We saw you switch it back to 2hi after you stalled it :p
    Good review though, I had the JK Rubicon with a manual and I loved it, found it to be one of the easiest manuals to drive. You Defn have to rev it out to pass people but I always found that to be half the run of owning it. Chirping 37” tires is also fun lol.
    Your tester is also exactly what I’ll be ordering just not Black, thanks for the review was waiting on one for the manual, and even though you like the auto more, there something just so much more fun driving a manual Jeep. Your reaction to driving it should be enough to solidify it.

    I love manuals and I would absolutely buy a manual Gladiator BUT the towing capacity is almost *halved* with the manual.
    The Rubicon with an automatic can tow 7,000lbs and the manual can only tow 4,500lbs.
    I don't tow a ton of stuff and don't necessarily plan to but I just can't justify giving up the option/ability just for a third pedal

    Hi Sofyan. How does the manual drivetrain and experience compare to a Wrangler Manual? Is it comparable? I’m having difficulties with buying a Gladiator because I want to experience a manual first, but dealerships in my area don’t have a manual on the lot and they don’t have intentions on getting on unless it’s a custom order. So I’m stuck. Thanks.

    Pretty sure there is an error made about hauling capacity of manual. In all trim levels the manual can haul an extra couple hundred pounds more than the automatic because it weighs just a little less.

      Chrysler's ubiquitous 3.6L corporate V6 has been around almost a decade now with virtually no major defects being reported in higher mileage applications. The 8-speed auto's used in these are ZF units and are usually well-built/durable. Most of the 4x4 & suspension components used here are conventional and not likely to be a weak point. Not many electronic gadgets in these to go wrong either & nearly everything inside is rubberized/water-resistant, so I'd bet these will hold up just as good as any of the Japanese stuff so many of you gush over.

    I once read a quote attributed to General Eisenhower that he saw the use and prevalence of the Jeep with its great flexibility in many applications as the main reason for allied victory in Europe. Just imagine how far Jeep has come and how much better it is than the version than won World War II. I hate hearing the putdown that it is just a brand owned by Fiat and therefore inferior by association. To the credit of every company that has owned Jeep, each has had the good sense let Jeep be the Jeep consistent with its pedigree and allowed Jeep engineers and designers to continue in its evolutionary improvement. The formula worked well in the past and continue to work well now.

  • @americanparser
    @americanparser 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think Jeep is purposely tanking the manual option to save face while losing a minimum of automatic sales.
    Why else would you sell a light duty manual in a Jeep pickup? And if it's not light duty, why does the tow rating drop with it? And why does opting for the Dana 44s delete the manual?
    That's right. When I try to build a Gladiator Sport online at the Jeep website, choosing the Dana 44 axles requires an upgrade to the automatic. On the Rubicon, is the standard manual paired with Dana 44s, as the automatic is on the Rubicon? If it's not, what's the point of calling it a Rubicon? On the other hand, if it is, and a Rubicon can be had with a manual and standard Dana 44s, then when choosing the optional Dana 44s on the lower trim levels (because you can), why can't you choose the manual with them?
    Bottom line: choosing the manual should buy you a tougher, more capable truck, not a weaker one. Automatics for ultimate convenience, manuals for ultimate utility. That's the way, without sabotage, that the natural world works.
    Jeep apparently wants buyers to feel like idiots for choosing a manual, while still saying it technically offers one.
    It's like selling crappy pencils because you want everyone to buy your expensive pens. This is just another opportunity for Jeep to honor its heritage AND its die-hard enthusiast base that it just instead pissed away.

      They must have cheaped out on the strength of the manual trans. Another corporate example of exchanging the integrity of reputation for slightly higher profits. Makes sense , the new CEO has likely been making those decisions while the old one was preparing to step down.

      Brian Howell I’m glad you pointed out the massive difference in towing capacity however. 4000lbs just isn’t enough. Towing a side by side on a trailer with a cooler of beer is basically pushing the truck to its limit. I don’t understand why you can’t add the max tow package to the manual either even if it’s still a lower overall max. Why can’t I get the wide track D44s and increased engine cooling?
