      I absolutely agree, but it sounds like they really screwed up the gearing on this one so badly that he recommends the automatic! So now people won't buy the manual because the gearing sucks and Jeep (and the rest of the industry) will say "See... we offered a manual and only a few people bought it!" - and use this as justification for NOT offering it in the future. Not cool.

    6:00 - Shift from 4-5 or 4-6 directly at 65mph, and you'll have no problems. Downshift from 5 at 60 mph or from 6 at 65 mph to 4th. And don't be afraid of high rpms as long as you are not redlining (and engine/oil is warmed up). The v6 Pentastar loves high rpms and that is where its powerband is.

    I liked your video, but I disagree about 5th and 6th. I use 5th some on the county roads but rarely go to 6th unless on the interstate. This is the magic of a manual. You have to play the gears to what you need. If you are in 5th and you need to pass, you downshift to 4th, accelerate and then grab 5th again, etc. I like it.

    This is spot on how I feel about the Gladiator's manual. I've owned my 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon with 6spd manual now for 6 months. I am a manual fanatic. Yet for the same reasons (gearing), I have not been as much a fan of this Gladiator with manual transmission. Which I think is a shame because it's awesome that they even offer this truck with the manual. And like Matt says, the shifter itself has a great feel to it. Much improved over the JK (much shorter throws and less movement). But the gearing just ruins it.

  • @blthep1411

    I predicted this. A vehicle as heavy as the Gladiator with a relatively weak V6 and two overdrive gears (.81 and .72) on a manual needs low gears like 4.88 if it’s going to be selling with 33” tires on the Rubicon trim. Stock 4.10 certainly isn’t enough unless you only use 1-4 and use maybe 5th around 70mph+. I wouldn’t even try to use 6th in that setup. If it were me I would swap in 5.38’s and run 35’s as a permanent setup. First time hearing someone voice a complaint over gearing, and I’m glad to hear it because it confirms my suspicion. Thanks for the review.

    • @SixSpeed440

    • @rammmit
      @rammmit 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely not too much power for a midsize, the Dakota had a 4.7l, 5.2l and a 5.9l v8 options throughout its years of production.
      For the price it should have a v8, they are making a killing selling these for as much as they are with the 3.6l.

    • @SixSpeed440

    I like the Gladiator, and I love that there's a manual in it, but FCA have lost their freaking minds on pricing. These things shouldn't touch $40K in top trim, but I've seen them on the dealer lot for over $60K. It's insane!! They're not worth anywhere near what they're asking, so they're sitting on the lot not moving.
    Leasing schemes have dramatically over-inflated vehicle values to the point no one wants to buy vehicles anymore because they're not worth the money they're asking. This suits the dealers just fine, as they want to push for a world where no one buys vehicles, but instead leases them, essentially paying for cars forever and never really owning anything. Again, it's insane!
    The best thing people can do is not lease or buy new vehicles. Settle for something used until dealers are hurting so bad they're willing to price new vehicles in a reasonable range again. Anything else is just encouraging them to keep doing what they're doing.
    It's a shame really. I'd like to own a Jeep Gladiator with a manual, but there's no way in hell I'd ever pay $50K to $60K for one.

I LOVE manuals, and driving my JT Rubicon "feels" great, as in the mechanical feels, but I was starting to worry when I was in 5th, doing 55, going up a hill, looking down at the Speedometer I was now doing 43. I was worried since my original vehicle was a manual 2001 Mustang GT and that didn't struggle at all in the same gear. I obviously know there is a "slight" (sarcasm) difference between a Gladiator and a Mustang, but I was just worried I was driving it wrong preferring to stick with 4th gear than any higher gear on the highway, unless it was flat or downhill. I still love my choice but now I'm wondering if there is an aftermarket way of fixing the gearing lengths without paying an arm and a leg or looking at basically a different vehicle.

    The manual will be more reliable than the automatic in the long term. The biggest penalty in this application; however, is the greatly reduced towing capacity.

      Just junk but the Jeep people will buy it. A nice loaded up F-150 or even other brands would drive so much better. I went thru a Jeep faze and then drove a 2019 rubicon. My 2009 F-150 that I keep around to haul(140k) drives so much better. And I put off the days I have to drive the truck.

      @@gregblack8550 ya but ur missing the point of what a jeep is. Ur f150 isnt going to go places a jeep can. A jeep is a vehicle purpose built for offoad and has all the tools to do so like articulation, wheel travel, ground clearance, lockers front and rear, say bar disconnects. I mean sure it doesnt drive as nice on road but untill u drive one offroad u have no idea what ur talking about. Its like saying a 911 is shit because it doesnt drive as smooth as ur camry.

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Gladiator is more expensive than the other mid-size trucks because all the off-road stuff is expensive. If you don't care about going off-road, you're better off getting a really nice RAM for 57k.

    5th and 6th are overdrive and both are what you want on the highway. Especially with a 4.10 rear. You're not gonna appreciate that with only 40 miles of highway driving.
    Matt doing what a lot of reviewers do; expecting a Jeep to be a sports car.

    • @ZZZRaven65
      @ZZZRaven65 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you miss the part where he says even 5th isn't really usable until about 70mph? Yes, they're obviously overdrive gears (he even said 4th is a 1:1 ratio), but they are apparently way too tall.
