    Of the 66 monarchs who have ruled over England since the Norman conquest only 8 have been Queens. These women have had to fight to gain and hold power. Through most of English history men outranked women in the line of succession so the only way for a woman to inherit the throne was if she had no living brothers. The wives of Kings, while called Queens are not monarchs in their own right and are referred to as Queen Consorts. Some of these female monarchs who were fortunate enough to occupy the throne were less than brilliant rulers. But some reigned with wisdom and justice proving a woman could do the job just as well as a man. Here are their stories...
    Matilda (1141-1148)
    Jane (1553)
    Mary I (1553-1558)
    Elizabeth II (1558-1603)
    Mary II (1689-1694)
    Anne (1702-1714)
    Victoria (1837-1901)
    Elizabeth II (1952-)
    I do not own rights to the footage, images or music. This is an educational film.

      I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. However, if they left their marriage country, she had to do so with nothing other than the clothes on their backs. The personal effects she brought for her passed to her children or her husband's other heirs. She would have been given dower rights to her property, meaning that the principal is held in trust and profits are paid out to meet the widow's financial needs. At her death, the properties revert to her husband's estate for passage to whomever was the husband's successor.

      Marriage didn't mean immediate sex or living together. That would wait for a few years until the underage spouse reached a suitable age, so probably when she was 15 or 16 and deemed old enough to start having children.
      Until then, the girl have her own living quarters and would be surrounded by people in charge of her upbringing, probably not even seeing much of her 'husband'.

      Certainly, it was Henry VIII who created the Church of England. 😳 I made a mistake. Thank you for pointing it out. However, the Church of England was originally made by the personal feelings of Henry VIII, and I don't think the ground was solid. The achievement of Elizabeth I, who strengthened the foundation of the Church of England and left a Catholic element, is a great deal. 😌

This rift can be seen in the marriages of the English monarchs as every King/Queen of England from George I to Victoria, 1714 to 1901, had a German spouse. I love the English/British Monarchy. I have memorized by heart all Monarchs from Alfred the Great to Elizabeth II. I wrote a children's book about Elizabeth Woodville - focusing on how she met and was chosen by Edward IV (I avoided the princes in the tower since it's a children's book). As a teacher, I like the idea of my girl students reading about powerful women. My goal is to write a series called "An Elizabeth Story" with a book about Queen Elizabeth, Consort of Henry VII, Elizabeth I, Elizabeth Stuart, The Winter Queen (whose daughter, Sophia of Hanover, was the gateway to the current Monarch), Princess Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of Charles I, Queen Elizabeth, Consort of George VI, and Elizabeth II. Each of these Elizabeths showed great strength and courage during their lifetime, and each has a compelling story to tell.

      Fun fact, Philip was instrumental in convincing his wife Mary I to leave the throne to her sister Elizabeth, rather than her cousin Mary Stewart and by extension the staunchly Catholic Valois monarchy of France, where Mary was Queen. Philip sent the Spanish Armarda decades later, not because Elizabeth said no to marriage, but because of English pirates raiding Spanish shipping. So entirely Elizabeth's fault.

      Her first husband did become King of France briefly, Francois II (named after his grandfather and peer of Henry VIII of England, Francois I). Francois II was the first of Catherine de Medici's benighted sons who became king one after another (except for the last poor sod, Alecon, who loved and lost Elizabeth I of England).

    Elizabeth II really just melts into the persona of being queen. Much of the segment about her was more about her son than herself. I watched a 6 episode documentary about the House of Windsor and even that focused more on her family than herself. She just truly personifies being the regal ruler of a nation. Now that she is old shes everyone's favorite grandma. Its impressive.

    Matilda and Jane never had coronations, and so were never crowned. Mary I was the first English queen regnant (queen in her own right) to be officially crowned in a coronation. Also, Elizabeth I was 69 when she died, not 67.
    Other than these errors, the video was so beautifully composed and highly informative.

      I don't know if it has always been this way, but England is never without a monarch. The heir assumes the title and function of king/queen as soon as the previous monarch is dead. No coronation is necessary.

    • @aliciarichards6634
      @aliciarichards6634 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Christian Patriot absolutely correct, but my point was that Matilda and Jane never got to have coronations, but the lady in the video incorrectly states that they did. The coronation was a way of solidifying the monarch's position on the throne, a ceremony that connected them to God and effectively made them holy. If a monarch was uncrowned, they were still legally a monarch, but being crowned did help to solidify their position on the throne. It was effectively a marriage between the monarch and God.

      @@aliciarichards6634 In cases of a disputed succession a claimant would hastily have himself crowned thinking this added legitimacy to their claim. Elizabeth II's namesake was not Elizabeth I. She was named after her own mother, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Soon after her father passed away, she was asked what her regal name should be (as she was originally not meant to be Queen). She responded, "well, by my name of course. My name is Elizabeth". The fact that it was the same name as Elizabeth I is purely coincidental.

      @Rashi Rosenzweig- You are absolutely right, of course. I'm always surprised that people aren't more informed about the life of the current Monarch. As you said, she wasn't born or raised to be the queen, and was named after her mother. Though it's not common today, many girl's were named after their mother during the 1800's and early 1900's. Another example of this was Queen Victoria naming her first child Victoria. That Victoria married the future German Kaiser and gave birth to Kaiser Wilhelm II.

    The thing is Elizabeth I burned just as many Catholics as Mary did Protestants...but no one talks about it because of anti-Catholic bias

    • @brontewcat
      @brontewcat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +125

      Elizabeth burnt no Catholics as being burnt was a crime for heresy. Elizabeth burned a total number of 3 people for heresy - all Anabaptists. Catholics were seen as traitors and were hanged or hanged, drawn and quartered (although usually the victim was cut down dead or unconscious).
      Excluding the executions which took place after the Rising in the North (1569/70) about the same number of Catholics were executed for treason as Protestants were burned under Mary. The difference was these executions did not start until after Elizabeth had been on the throne for 12 years and took place over a 30 year period compared to the Marian executions which started about 2 years after she became Queen and occurred over 3 years.
      Furthermore the circumstances were very different. In 1569/70 the Pope excommunicated Elizabeth and absolved her Catholic subjects from obedience to her. This meant any Catholic was a potential traitor. The reason Elizabeth is not seen in the same light is that in circumstances where Elizabeth was surrounded by potential conspiracies her record of executions is relatively small compared to the numbers dying in the religious wars and crackdowns in Europe at the same time. Most Catholics under Elizabeth were far safer in England, than being of the opposite religious view to the monarch in most other European countries.

    • @brontewcat
      @brontewcat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Austin DeVos. Most biographies of Elizabeth do discuss the persecution of Catholics in the latter part of her reign. However as I set out below the circumstances were very different.

    • @brontewcat
      @brontewcat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Alexandra B. While at a personal level Mary was probably the nicest of the Tudors, most historians would dispute great ruler. She failed to return England to Rome, she failed to produce an heir and she failed to put England first in her dealings with Spain.
      Not only did she burn (a particularly gruesome death) for what they believed rather than what they did) she led England into a disastrous war against France which almost destroyed the monarchy ‘s finances and lost England’s last possession in France. However the loss of Calais was probably not a bad thing, as it was no doubt very expensive to maintain. Not having Calais probably allowed Elizabeth to repair the Crown’s finances more easily.

    • @brontewcat
      @brontewcat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Alexandra B. Every point you make was true of Elizabeth as well. Elizabeth did learn from Mary’s mistakes. But Mary did not have the qualities to make a great Queen - her religious beliefs ensured she could never be great. She, line Edward, was a religious bigot. Elizabeth wasn’t. Elizabeth ruled with her head not her heart and religious belief. Mary was so convinced her role was to return England she squandered the support and love of her people. Elizabeth realised the people’s support was the strength of her reign.
      No matter that Mary May have won a few battle the was was a disaster for England financially. Elizabeth, like their grandfather Henry VII knew financial strength meant a strong monarchy.

    • @maxisussex
      @maxisussex 5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Mary ruled for 5 years and Elizabeth for 44, so more or less nine times longer. Mary killed more people in a shorter space of time and that is why she is known as "Bloody Mary".
