Part 1: • The Six Wives of Henry...
Part 2: • The Six Wives of Henry...
Henry VIII is one of the most famous kings in English history. He is renowned for his voracious appetites - for food, wine, power and women. During his 38 year reign he went through 6 wives and for them triggered seismic changes in the religious and political landscape of the nation. But who were the women for which this larger-than-life monarch’s passions ran hot and cold? And who were they before, and in some cases after their fates were in the hands of this fearsome King? Here are the stories of the six wives of Henry VIII.
Catherine of Aragon
Anne Boleyn
Jane Seymour
Anne of Cleves
Catherine Howard
Catherine Parr

@@labrinikotsiori101 I love you for that 😂😂
Actually, though King Henry VIII left the Catholic Church he was still bound spiritually or politically to never truly divorce. That is why on record the marriages are listed as annulments (as in never really happening) based on an assortment of reasons such as the marriage being a crime against God because he married his dead brother's widow (Catherine Aragon) and unconsummated because he found her disgusting and nothing like her portraits from his contract to marry (Anne of Cleves).
The other two (Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard) were charged with treason for the basis of execution.
But only Anne had first been given the choice to annul the marriage, which she vehemently refused. In the end Henry succumbed to the political pressure to produce a male aire and had no other choice but to remove her from power with false charges of treason. Treason was swiftly dealt in execution.
For Catherine Howard, I never found any evidence that she was falsely accused of infidelity, which was also considered a treasonous offense. What was she thinking. SMH

The way he threw Katherine away when she went into battle while pregnant and fought off an invasion, then delivered a trophy of their enemy to Henry as proof that the guy was fucking dead. Like, Henry was lucky to have her.
Also, when she served as Spain's ambassador, Henry VII expected her to be easily manipulated, but she was like 'lol no' and was his political match. She was made to be queen.
Catherine did command the army to victory against the Scottish while pregnant but she never rode into battle.

True
He remarried 5 times, the first one is just married.
He actually produced a couple of sons, his third wife gave birth to the future king who inherited the throne after Henry died, as well as a couple of illegitimate sons and still births or infant deaths with Catherine.
At the end of the day, Anne had the last laugh. Her child was the longest living and most well known monarch of England 🤷🏾♀️
SomePerson Online no she didn’t because she didn’t live to see it, also I don’t think she was the most well known BUT she was longest living and Anne would been proud

I don't understand why Catherine of Aragon was not taught English. She was engaged around 4 or 5, so the knew way ahead of time. 🤦♀️
Boa Gaming I was confused about that also. And didn’t it say that she knew many languages? I wonder why she never learned English.
Aye shut the fuck up she was best queen
I'm guessing because English was not as widespread then? Not sure though, just thinking out loud ;-)
Probably because in the 14 th century. English was not as common as you’d think. There were several dialects and languages used in England including, Latin, Cornish, and English.
Jaimi Cottrill Cathrine of Aragon was born at the tail end of the 15th century (1485) and first became married at the very beginning of the 16th (1501/1509) meaning English was pretty much the only language spoken in England (the kinks ironed out in the 1550s) so although you were right in thinking English was new in the 14th century, it is a mystery as to why she didn’t know English by the time she was married the first time. There is no guarantee it stayed this was as she most likely became at least sort of fluent by the time she died in 1536, especially as a royal and noble.

It is so devastating to see Catherine of Aragon's condition, she deserved a husband much better than Henry VIII . In these conditions, it was completely natural for Mary to harbour intense hatred for the Protestant faith which she exhibited by executing Protestants mercilessly during her reign.
And passed the hatred onto mary, who grew up with a fierce hatred of protestants. Bloody Mary gets her name from killing hundreds of protestants
Mary did not "execute Protestants mercilessly" during her reign. She (and her rabid Catholic council) took vengeance on outspoken "heretics" ("heretics" according to Catholic instructions). Henry slew tens of thousands when he decided to kill for religious reasons. How many Hugonauts were slain by the French crown in the same era ? Every country was fighting to either eradicate or rejuvenate Roman Catholicism.
Ladies, Ladies, this is a stupid fight, as we all know, religion is evil.
@Abc Xyz B O I mary was abused as a child man she was trained to be a queen from a young age but when her mother Catherine of Aragon was divorced she was forced to be a slave and was repeatedly told that she was a bastard by her own father and new step mom she was even forced to sign a paper saying that she was a bastard child then with her brother's rein she was almost forced to stop having mass which is a major part of her religion she even thought of running away from England at some point but in the end she persevered and then rightfully took the throne but even then she had a unhappy end because she married someone she loved but he didn't love her back then she believed she had a pregnancy (it turned out to be false as she just had a cyst) coupled with all the abuse she received it's no wonder she went crazy and started burning everyone but just Remember there's two sides to every story
Ikr
Imagine history if Henry has stayed with Catherine of Aragon and never had Elizabeth and Edward
We could have get a film: Mary 1, golden age.
True
13:45 The executioner from Calais, France was indeed the master of his craft, both technically and psychologically. When Anne was kneeling down next to the chopping block, blindfolded, the swordsman shouted in French: give me my sword! In reality he already had the sword in his hands and he dealt a swift and clean blow, ending Anne's life. The idea was to catch the queen unawares and to kill her as quickly, painlessly and as stress-free as possible.

“Confinement” for the pregnant queens was actually extremely dangerous, and not only because they were made to avoid fresh air and sunlight.
They wouldn't have known that back then as medical knowledge was very limited, particularly regarding women's bodies and pregnancy. Stimulation was considered dangerous because it "excited the womb".
How cruel do you have to be to forbid a child from mourning the death of their own mother? I always pictured Mary as the Villain but when you look at what she went through early in her life it’s no wonder she turned out the way she did.

💀💀💀
You got that confused with Anne of cleves
Katherine of Aragon did not live to see the dissolution of the monasteries, which started in earnest after both her and Anne Boleyn were dead.
I’m tired of the narrative that Anne played a game in seducing Henry by withholding sex. That comes from the hindsight of knowing what happened, but Anne would have had no idea that refusing to be his mistress would have the effect of making him more infatuated with her. It’s far more likely that she simply had no interest in being a mistress, and flat out refused him and hoped he’d forget about her. Unfortunately, he basically harassed her and wouldn’t leave her alone and it was only until he proposed to her that she realized he would never let her marry anyone else and her only real choices were to accept his proposal, flee to a nunnery or risk an even worse fate. I look at Anne’s case, at least at first, as one of a woman being sexually harassed and making the best of a bad situation. Once she agreed to the marriage and was committed, yes, she was an active participant in the ‘great matter’, but I don’t think her grand design was angling for a crown from the beginning. It’s not a fair or accurate representation of what was actually going on at the time
Anne held out because she didn't want to be his mistress. Anne was NOT a dumb woman. Not in the least. Hoped he forgot about her? So what about the letters she sent him? "How great soever may be the bounties I have received, the joy that I feel in being loved by a King whom I adore, and to whom I would with pleasure make a sacrifice of my heart, if fortune had rendered it worthy of being offered to him, will ever be infinitely greater." "The warrant of maid of honour to the Queen induces me to think that Your Majesty has some regard for me, since it gives me the means of seeing you oftener, and of assuring you by my own lips (which I shall do on the first opportunity) that I am, Your Majesty’s very obliged and very obedient servant." - Nah dude she knew what she was doing.
@@ButtonsCasey True Anne was intelligent and maybe ambitious to a point but there's no evidence that she ever schemed to marry Henry. George Wyatt (grandson of Thomas Wyatt who was a close friend of Anne's) writes in his biography that "Anne was not likely to cast her eye upon one who had been married ten years."
@@isobelduncan She did know what she was doing. I don't think she was doing it on her own, or out of her own free will. I do believe she truly did not want to be Henry's mistress nor anything else to him. But what was a woman supposed to do back then. She was stalked and she had male family members that more than likely wanted to be elevated. We can really see this with her uncle the Duke of Norfolk. Did the same thing with Katherine Howard. She HAD to play the game. She did and she was awarded for a while. *Note I supposedly descend from George Wyatt and know all about what he said*.
😄 )
The Six references in the comments are giving me life lmao
Jane’s Labor lasted three days, and the doctors asked Henry who they were going to save, he said the son because he could easily find a new wife
That speaks a thousand words

lol i love how everyone here came from six the musical
I played Jane Seymour when I was 8 in primary school it was fun. During curtain call as I was walking to the front of the stage I accidentally stood on my costume dropping the doll that substituted as Edward at the time me & everyone in the assembly hall laughed now I'm mortified as an adult.
I watch one animatic of Six and all of a sudden TH-cam starts recommending me actually educational videos about the queens
Who is just watching this cause of the six ex wives musical?😂😂😂
Im looking for al the theatre kids rn

... *Slowly raises hand*
But now we’re, Ex-Wives
I honestly think Catherine of Aragon was his best wife she unlike other women of Henry was true for his love and a real badass
And then they were reborn, started a band, and spat on their ex’s grave.
Fun fact, my best friend shares a birthday with Mary, Katherine of Aragon’s daughter while I share a birthday with Elizabeth the first, Anne Boleyn’s daughter
I'm waiting for someone to say they share a birthday with Edward now lol

Nice
Katherine and Arthur both spoke Latin, so it isn't true they couldn't converse.
But their pronunciation was very different, so they did have some trouble understanding each other.
i mean latin isnt really a conversational language

Coincidence?
I think not!!
Her: Anne lived in the sophisticated french court
Me: GREW UP IN A FRENCH COURT, UI UI BONJOUR...
Little did Henry know that all 6 of them would team up and make an awsome band
I came from Six the musical and it actually made Anne sound like the young and dumb one but I though not dumb she was fun
I was listening to Six
Now I found myself LEARNING about the six wives xd
King Henry must be like “Huh? They started a band?! Oh..WAIT ABOUT ME?! Well if Jane Seymour is alive.. NEVER MIND!”
Honestly after learning more about Mary’s life story it’s no wonder she went a little murdery. Her life was very heartbreaking and traumatic. It’s so ironic that henry blamed his wives for not being able to give him a son meanwhile it was his own damn fault😂
He was also dumb as hell bc not only was Catherine’s blood bluer than ink, she was capable, competent, well connected, ignored his affairs and oh yea WON HER BATTLE WHILE PREGNANT. And gave her husband the credit for it while his sorry ass lost his!
In all honesty, I think I like Jane the most..
It’s believed that King Henry absolutely adored Jane because of her kindness and how pleasant she was. Out of all the queens, she was the most pure and innocent I think. In a way, I think of her death as a revenge type thing, because of how poorly King Henry treated the other queens.
Okay... 😭😭😭
Jane was his fav cuz she died before he could get tired of her
Yeah, i agree. Jane doesn't get enough love!
@@itzelruiz1659 its ok! ❤️
Yes she was an okay stepmother but my mother will always be the True wife of my father, Henry VIII.

Catherine of Aragon charging into Scotland in heavy armor while pregnant is the most badass move I've ever heard
Historically she actually didn't although she did rule England as regent and defend it from invasion.
Hearing about what happened to
Catherine of Aragon it’s easy to understand why Mary was the way she was her father was truly messed up makes me feel bad for her
Anne Boleyn is my favourite queen.

I love all the queens for separate reasons. Anne Boleyn was the most fun for me
My favourite is Anne Of Cleves.
She was so crual to Catherine dead.i dont understands how People likes marriage breaker.
Thank god for uploading this! The Six wives are a pretty big subject right, especially for theatre fans.
Imagine being told you cannot mourn the death of your mother.
Catherine of Aragorn was abit of a badass gotta admit
Lol my mum was like "oh anne of cleves looks nice" i was laughing so hard because henry ovi didnt think so
I like learning about the royal family's in history and Henry's wives are no different
Not many know this, but yellow was the color for mourning in Spain. It could be Henry's secret way of honoring his first wife, whom he did love for most of their lives together.
pardons if someone has already pointed this out but the portrait you included about a minute into the video is not catherine but her sister, joanna.
on a more positive note your channel is great and i love to listen to your videos while i knit!
No, it is Catalina and you best look carefully between the two portraits. Juana’s portrait has a necklace and her background is more green than Catalina’s.
I have a strange fascination with King Henry ,and his wives. It's just mind blowing to me. I can't get over it.

I started sing every song for every wife from six
You know you've screwed up badly and left a bad legacy when since 1547 there has not been another monarch named Henry, once the most profilic name of the kings of England.
