I have to admit that I found the moment the Queen's coffin began its slow descent into the vault quite jarring. Just like that, she disappeared, never to be seen again by the public she served for longer than most of us have even been alive. The Hanoverians certainly suffered a lot of devastating losses of children in infancy and childhood. I can't help but feel for King William IV and his wife, who lost all of their children - his only legitimate ones - in their infancy, including Princess Elizabeth, whose effigy is on display in the halls of Windsor Castle. His younger brothers also lost several children in infancy. Horrible...
I believe the loss of so many infants and children may have been due in some part because of that curse of European royalty, inbreeding. Even Queen Elizabeth II married a cousin. Thankfully there is new blood in the line now.
I have to admit I cried when my Queen died but when she started ever so slowly going through the floor I lost all control of myself. It really it me full force that My Queen is gone forever and tears fell like rain from Heaven. She is with God now and at peace. She has fulfilled God's wishes during her time on earth. I'm going to give my vote to George V and Queen Mary for the nicest memorial tombs. They are tastefully done, the likenesses are good, and visitors hundreds of years from now can have no doubt about who they are or what they looked like during their reign. If only all of history was preserved so well. I do hope King Charles sees to it that a flattering but accurate statue of his mother's likeness is erected in some appropriate place to honor her memory.
I hope so too. I suggest a Mausoleum for the whole Royal House of Hanover. That small King George VI chapel left me thinking that is a rather humble and unworthy resting place for our Queen and her husband. Take a look at the Frogmore Mausoleum for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It would to rival the Royal Mausoleum of the El Escorial in Spain.
@@kate_cooper Not good enough. The New Year revellers high on drink and drugs will be up on the plinth hanging on to the Queen's statue putting a can of beer or a bottle of wine to it its mouth. Some have already tried that with the Nelson statue.
As morbid as this was, This was a very interesting video. I always wondered who else was buried in St. George's chapel at Windsor Castle. It might be decadent, but the royals of the world sure know how to go out in style.
It is not very grand in that crypt. Most of them are just in a coffin on Shelf. You need to visit the Frogmore Albert and Victoria mausoleum to see royal grandness at its most splendid.
Thanks for doing this video lindsey. I visited st georges chapel 5 years ago. It is so beautiful and moving. I would spend all day in there. Your ticket to get into the chapel also allows you to explore the rest of windsor castle. It’s worth every pound. Seeing the queen’s funeral brought back memories of our visit there. I plan to visit again next year to visit the queens final resting place. It’s such a historic building ❤️
@@candelariafidel1034 No. The royal vault is private. Only the royal family may enter it. There is an iron gate which is locked between the church and the vault. You can look through the iron gate and see the vault.

I am the only one who finds it so ironic that Henry 8th wanted lavish tomb with life sized statues, but literally the son he wanted the most denied him that because of religion Henry made himself head of in hopes to concieve so desired son? That was pure karma on Henry for all the suffering he inflicted on others
The Tudor dynasty did not last long. It died when Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603. The Stuart's took over but they too also had problems with heirs for succession despite Queen Anne having 17 pregnancies and no living children to succeed. Then her sister Mary took the Throne together with her Dutch husband William of Orange. They too were childless and so ended the Stuart's. What to do now? Look for the nearest blood relative. The Elector of Hanover William was second cousin of Queen Anne and the one in invited to take the throne of Great Britain and Ireland. So began the Hanoverian dynasty. During the first World war King George V wanted to distance the royal family from its German roots and changed the name to Windsor.
Much ado about nothing then. We are all but mere fallible mortals hoping for God to have mercy on our souls. Have to know the Son of God and not create our own religious order to do as we please.
Henry's son became king after Henry died. But his son died in his teens. His sister Mary I then became queen. After her death her sister Elizabeth I became queen. After her death her cousin James of Scotland became king James I of England.
This was, BY FAR, the best explanation of the royal burial vaults.... So very interesting.... One of your BEST episodes, EVER! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL.... Long time subscriber. Love your voice!! Love from Georgia, USA
Great breakdown of the tombs in this. It always saddens me a bit to see Mary I's and Elizabeth I's tombs. Mary I desperately wanted to be buried with her mother, but was snubbed of that as she was with so many things in her life.
TBH, Mary, BLOODY Mary, should have been thrown in a ditch somewhere. OK they may be a little harsh, but Mary should be thankful, for what she got, the woman was absolutely nasty, she didn’t earn the nickname, Bloody Mary, for nothing.
@@wazz1154 she never would have become Bloody Mary if it wasn't for her father's obsession to have a son. A lot of people seem to forget that Henry VIII is the monster behind her 😔
Lovely video. We often see that this or that royal is buried at St George's Chapel, Windsor, but rarely are we given detail. Thank you for detailing this so gracefully. Great job!
Fantastic video! I agree with the comment about Henry VIII being forgotten. All the death and heartbreak for a son and 2 Elizabeth's were the greatest monarchs the world has ever known.
This is information I always wanted to know about the Royal Burial Vault; how the casket was descended into the vault, etc. I am very interested in the British Royal Family and this is extremely informatinal. MANY thanks!!!
Great video! Explains so much about how the royal vault works. We went to pay our respects to the late HMTQ at the Windsor Castle on Sept. 29. It was very sad to see the marble slab with her name on it, it was unreal that she was no longer with us. May HMTQ rest in peace.
My Queen earned my respect the day she was crowned. I watched it on a 9 inch black and white TV. She looked so frail but as always never put a foot wrong. I reserve judgement for the future I'm afraid.
I’m ex Australian army I swore my oath to queen and country I had huge respect for queen Elizabeth II and princess Diana it really sucked seeing her by her self when her husband died then not long after she did but she lived a long time.
Good video. Being born in the UK i love our history especially that of our Royal family. I've never been to Windsor Castle but seen documentaries about it. In September I watched the funeral of Queen Elizabeth the 2nd who i admired highly. She will be greatly missed.
I'm planning to go to Windsor soon. I've been there already, St. George's Chapel is beautiful, but somehow Erie (spelling?) Charlotte's monument is so heart breaking. As a Victoria 'fan' I sometimes think about how would Charlotte's reign have been if she had become Queen.
I used to live near there. It's a lovely town. Visit Saville Garden, the Air Force Memorial overlooking Runnymede, and Windsor Great Park if the weather is good. (I always laughed at the name of the nearby town of Old Windsor, considering Windsor Castle is 1000 years old!)
Those are things I wonder about as well. How things would have gone had Charlotte and her son had lived. I'd like to think in another universe parallel to ours she and her son did live on. How history would have changed among a great many things will forever be a mystery 🤷. Hope you have fun on your trip! Wish I was going with you 😆!
Wow, great job! You are so thorough. Ive been to Windsor Castle, and St George’s chapel. I wanted to see Elizabeth Woodville’s tomb as I find her interesting. “Poor” Henry VIII’s spot is unimpressive. You can walk right over him. For those interested, In Spain, at el Escorial, one can actually wander around in the royal crypts. Very deep, and somewhat eerie.
This is a very interesting video. I find it befitting that Henry 8th is STILL forgotten under the floor....none of his children had his ostentatious memorial created per his Will. 😆 He so deserves this. His prized son didn't do it, and his daughters probably would've if he hadn't treated them so 💩 horribly. Who are those 2 boys under the stairwell!? 👀 Guess we'll never know!
Who would have been the 2nd? Because if it had been William IV's daughter with Queen Adelaide, our Elizabeth II might not have been Queen after all. However had Edward VIII not abdicated Elizabeth STILL would have been Queen. Wallis was infertile.
Though I must admit the stone effigies of the royals are really cool! But there is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping it simple, and it too looks really nice as well 👍. I wonder if Charles will choose to be buried there with Camilla one day or choose to be buried elsewhere 🤔.
@@TheMeloettaful As the heir and current king, I don't think Charles has the luxury of choosing, unfortunately. I'd imagine that if he did, he'd want to be buried near the cottage he finds solace in. But as king, he will likely join the vault his mother made for them, or one of the notable vaults of monarchs.
@@NosKryme There's no more room where QEII is buried. The late Queen isn't actually laid to rest in the "royal vault". Her final resting place is the George VI memorial Chapel where she is with her father, mother, husband, and sister. It's a small Chapel and there's no more room there.
Very interesting video! It’s so Victoria and Albert to have a special mausoleum all to themselves. And very Henry VIII to never getting around to building his.
True. Henry VIII left money for a very impressive memorial. I saw the plans. It included an altar for a daily requiam Mass to be offered. Henry took the black marble sarcophagus from Cardinal Wolsey for himself. He never got to be interned in it. Admiral Lord Nelson is in it in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral in London. Henry VIII is entombed in obscurity in a shared vault below the choir area. There is no access for the public. It would seem that none of his three Children saw building his memorial as a priority.
Not quite all to themselves. There some others family members in the vault below. The last one to be entombed in there was Princess Alice Countess of Athlone who was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. I saw her once on RMS Windsor Castle on her way down to Cape Town, South Africa in 1975.
Thank you. This was very interesting. I kept hearing Princess Margaret was buried with her father but never shown where. So far yours is the only video that I've seen her resting place. The family is back together again.
Marble coffins are so beautiful❤ I wish all kings and queens coffins were that way. Huge respect for respecting dead and not letting public in. Thank u for episod
Thank you for doing this video. I've been curious about the Royal Vault since Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth's death. I couldn't find anything online that explained it. I really enjoyed learning! Thanks again!!
The Queen was not down there long. She was brought up later in the day together with Prince Philip. They were both entombed in the George VI memorial chapel around 7-30 that same evening.
I find it quite lovely that if anyone in the royal family wanted to go pay respect to their family while the church was open, they could do so in privacy.
I would love to see a video about princess Charlotte. There's so much about her that we barely know and it's sad that she never got to see her mother when she got pregnant. I wonder if she was screaming for her mother when she was going through the grueling labor. I can't even imagine the terrible pain she went through only to lose this child that she'd so desperately wanted. And on top of that, she ended up bleeding out. I thought it was sweet that her husband, after he remarried, named one of his daughters after her.
So, I'm fairly certain I have ancestors/relatives buried in St. George's cathedral. My great aunt has been working on the family genealogy for over 30 years, and I remember her telling my earlier this year that he was someone who worked (maybe took care of?) the church, and lived there with his wife and child. They were found buried near Henry VI, I believe, during a renovation in the 19th century. I'll have to ask her about it again, she has all these documents.
Well once you get the documents I'd like to read them online. Not that I don't believe you, just wanna see for myself cuz that's extremely interesting.
Add another lie to Shakespeare's account. Richard III did not kill Henry VI - that was done at the Tower of London on the order of his brother Edward IV after the Yorkist victory at Tewkesbury and was the natural follow-on from the death of Henry's son, also Edward, in that battle.
i love seeing pictures of the descendants of the hanoverians; they all have such a distinctive look with the bug-eyes and it's amusing how many generations that trait has stayed for
Is it weird I can imagine King George V and Alexandra, Mary of Tekt and her husband in their ghost forms look at Elizabeth II with horror and shock as Queen E relates tech innovations and family drama as they drink their cups of ghost tea... I still find it funny imagining them in Georgian styles as they stare at E in her 2 piece get-ups...

Wow, wasn't aware of this Ethiopian prince. Shouldn't he be returned home to rest with his relatives? Or should he be left where he is, for history's sake? Also, the vaults could potentially be a good tourist attraction. Why don't they allow public viewing, at least periodically?
I didn't know that as well 😮! It irks me he was buried outside 😤. Let alone was taken far away from his homeland. I wonder besides his parents if he had any other family left. But I guess not 😢. As for the vaults being tourist attractions I think that's an awesome idea 💡😀! It doesn't even have to be every day just periodically like you said. Probably the likely reason they don't do this is because it is supposed to be a final, peaceful, resting place. And it probably feels very disrespectful to them to open the vaults up as attractions 😅. No matter if doing so would no doubt bring in a lot of extra money 💰💰💰. But it doesn't hurt to dream though ☺.
@@TheMeloettaful El Escorial just outside of Madrid has a royal vault you can visit. It’s very beautiful and everyone there was respectful. Can’t say everyone would always be that way tho.
The vaults are sacred private burial places for the royals. Only the royal families may enter them. Tourists are not allowed to disturb them. They are not a tourist attraction. For that you can visit Disneyland.
I think it’s spelled “choir” today, not quire. Wow, I didn’t know about the two coffins in Edward IV’s tomb! And I cannot imagine the grief of Queen Anne having lost 17 children.
This is England. Nothing is spelled like it sounds or how people think it should be! The choir is the group of singers that meet in the quire area of the chapel.
They brought it back up later and placed it in the George VI Chapel at the side of the church. It isn't open to the public. Prince Philip. He wasn't a king.
Philip stayed down in the vault under the caraphult toawait Elizabeth. They were then raised an interred with her parents and sister a week later in a private ceremony of just the Royal family in attendance.
I found the original designer of St George’s in my family tree, Reginald Bray. There are records that say he is buried there in the chapel as well. I’m a descendant of his nephew and heir as he and his wife were childless.
I've often wondered about the one child of Queen Anne's. All those children, all buried at the same place, except this one. It wasn't that they ran out of room, as this was not the last buried. Nor was it the first buried, the eldest, or the youngest. It did not die of plague or under unusual circumstances. I can find nothing out of the ordinary about this child that separates it from the others. Does anyone have any idea why this one child was singled out for a different burial place? I've queried several history groups but no one seems to know...
Probably the baby was born at Windsor and probably due to overwhelming grief only meant to temp bury the baby there and didn't get to bring the baby to where the rest are buried.
Goid thought, and one I checked into. Anne's children were variously born at at least 6 different places, but all but this one were buried in the same space. If you think of anything else I can check, I'd be glad to hear it. I even contacted Westminster Abbey to see if they knew. No such luck.
I’ve watched several of your videos and this is the most fascinating one. Thank you and keep making more interesting videos, I’m a huge fan of yours!🥰👍
Jane Seymour wasn't actually the only one of the wives of Henry VIII to give him a son. Catherine of Aragon actually gave birth to a living son, Henry, Duke of Cornwall who sadly died at 52 days old. Although he died as a baby, he was still a son borne by one of his wives.
I wonder if anybody else will ever be named Duke of Windsor? It might be too tainted, even though it's the family name. Some people speculated Charles wouldn't use that name again after Charles I&II, but he stayed with it as king.
There’s no precedent for it, as it wasn’t a “proper” royal dukedom, like York, Cambridge, Sussex, etc. It was created *for* the former Edward VIII and Wallis. Technically, it could be bestowed again, but given how much the family have tried to distance themselves from the scandal around his abdication? It’s *very* unlikely.
I don’t think anyone in the royal family will ever use the Duke of Windsor title again since Edward was the first and last holder to be call Duke of Windsor.
No, the title is extinct. George only created it for Edward after he abdicated, it was the first thing he did as king and paid Edward a salary until he died. He also had to purchase Balmoral and another estate from Edward, as they were personal property and didn't come with the crown
Thank you for doing this video. I have been curious about the Royal Vault after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. Wonderful history of the Royal Vault and how it was begun. Thank you for this video.
Such a fan of your videos and podcasts. Anything about Edward VII and the decision about the Romanov family being brought to the UK...so many different rumours
Watching the old film footage of Elizabeth II’s coronation at Westminster Abbey back in 1953, and then watching her final return to that very same spot in 2022, somehow symbolises the journey of life itself. Our late Queen was surrounded by the trappings of her destiny, but within herself she was a simple and virtuous person who recognised her role as one of service and duty, that was the oath she took in 1953 and she remained true to it for 70 years. Watching the Crown, Orb and Sceptre being removed from the coffin was a sobering reminder that whatever station we may hold in life, in the eyes of God we are all equal, and nobody was more aware of that than the late Queen herself; is as equals that we depart this life and go before Him to face our final judgement.

Is anyone allowed into the vault today outside of maintenance and other necessary workers? It would be so enthralling to actually be able to go down there! I’m a grave nerd lol
No one is allowed to enter the vault except for the royal family. There is a locked iron gate guarding it. It would be improper for tourists to enter it. You can see the vault through the iron gate. You can enter the church but not the vault. It is a private family resting place.
I can’t imagine Queen Anne, being pregnant SEVENTEEN times, and losing all of them. 💔 not even one survived. That’s a heartache no one should ever know.

Are you allowed to go into the Royal Vault?
Hi Lorna Merry Christmas in advance.

A case of what goes round comes round.
@Redmi 9 change the name to Pete it still won't take away any of the German roots lol blood is blood.

Great breakdown of the tombs in this. It always saddens me a bit to see Mary I's and Elizabeth I's tombs. Mary I desperately wanted to be buried with her mother, but was snubbed of that as she was with so many things in her life.
Poor Bloody Mary....
TBH, Mary, BLOODY Mary, should have been thrown in a ditch somewhere.

Great video! Explains so much about how the royal vault works. We went to pay our respects to the late HMTQ at the Windsor Castle on Sept. 29. It was very sad to see the marble slab with her name on it, it was unreal that she was no longer with us. May HMTQ rest in peace.

It’s eerie. You were close

His prized son didn't do it, and his daughters probably would've if he hadn't treated them so 💩 horribly. Who are those 2 boys under the stairwell!? 👀 Guess we'll never know!
its odd watching this for the first time in 2024 and knowing our queen elizabeth II could have been Queen Elizabeth III
Who would have been the 2nd? Because if it had been William IV's daughter with Queen Adelaide, our Elizabeth II might not have been Queen after all. However had Edward VIII not abdicated Elizabeth STILL would have been Queen. Wallis was infertile.
the late queen elizabeth's parents' graves are so simple and really nice
Though I must admit the stone effigies of the royals are really cool! But there is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping it simple, and it too looks really nice as well 👍.
I wonder if Charles will choose to be buried there with Camilla one day or choose to be buried elsewhere 🤔.
@@TheMeloettaful As the heir and current king, I don't think Charles has the luxury of choosing, unfortunately. I'd imagine that if he did, he'd want to be buried near the cottage he finds solace in.

I would love to see a video about princess Charlotte. There's so much about her that we barely know and it's sad that she never got to see her mother when she got pregnant.
I visited Windsor this year and had a brilliant time. St Georges chapel is beautiful and im so lucky to have got to visit

I think it’s spelled “choir” today, not quire. Wow, I didn’t know about the two coffins in Edward IV’s tomb! And I cannot imagine the grief of Queen Anne having lost 17 children.

Gawd that is so creepy to think about. Now I'm wondering why? 🧐
That was fascinating. Thank you very much from a historian of over forty years. I still have much to learn.

Hi pretty lady. how are you doing today? And how is the weather over there???
Charles the first is of unhappy memory and Charles II was a pleasure loving libertine. Neither were role models to be copied.
No, the title is extinct. George only created it for Edward after he abdicated, it was the first thing he did as king and paid Edward a salary until he died. He also had to purchase Balmoral and another estate from Edward, as they were personal property and didn't come with the crown

Hi Michelle Merry Christmas in advance.
Most are ok. But Richard III and Bloody Mary may not be.
@@JimMac23 I would add Henry VIII to the list, if only for the fate of his six wives: “Divorced, beheaded & died; divorced, beheaded, survived!”
