    Kings & Queens of England 5/8: The Tudors - Off with their heads!
    How did Victoria make weddings white and Christmas green?
    Why did Edward VIII give up the crown for the woman he loved?
    Why is the modern royal family called Windsor?
    An overview of the lives and the interesting and scandalous stories of the Kings and Queens of England. This chapter covers the many changes Britain and the world have undergone during the rule of two very long-lived queens. Kings and Queens included are:
    Victoria
    Edward VII
    George V
    Edward VIII
    George VI
    Elizabeth II
    Wherever possible I have used artwork representing the event being discussed however in some cases none could be found so artwork indicative of the subject was used.
    I do not own rights to any of the imagery or music in this video. This is an educational video.
    Music is Renaissance Castle by Doug Maxwell.

    Wait, Church of England was founded because Henry VIII wanted a divorce that the Catholic Church did not give him, yet it doesn’t recognize divorces? How ironic.

      Henry made a case that since Catherine of Aragon was married to and (supposedly) consummated with his brother Arthur first she was actually his sister. Therefore their marriage was never recognised and why 5 out of 6 pregnancies lead to death. Wallis Simpson definitely married 2 guys before their deaths, therefore divorce was never an acceptable excuse.

      A few inaccuracies here and there. For instance, it was stated that three of the Queen's children divorced in 1992. Charles and Diana only separated then. They divorced later in 1996. Also, it was previously stated that Henry Tudor (Henry VII) kidnapped Elizabeth of York, when in fact, all evidence suggests -- and most historians note -- that their match was arranged by their respective mothers. Inami he is definitely the consort of the monarch but he never held that title. Otherwise it would be his most senior title and we would know him as Philip, Prince Consort, just like Albert, Prince Consort (Queen Victoria’s husband). There was a lot of debate in the early years of Elizabeth’s reign on how Philip should be titled since he was only “HRH Sir Philip Mountbatten, The Duke of Edinburgh, etc.” so he was elevated to “HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, etc.”.
      The Prince Consort title was only ever used by Prince Albert.

    • @analuizagarciaescuissato4669
      @analuizagarciaescuissato4669 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kelly Day lol i do know that they hold more than one title (as you can see the “etc” after his most senior title) but as i also stated during the early years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign they debated if Prince Philip would hold the title Prince Consort or not and they chose he wouldn’t, the only person that has ever held this title in the United Kingdom was Prince Albert. Although Prince Philip IS the monarch’s consort he is NOT “The Prince Consort”, even if he is a Prince and even if he is the monarch’s consort because “The Prince Consort” is a title and not the position he is in. “HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, Baron Greenwich” is his full title plus honors such as knight, companion and aide-de-camp. And moving to what you said about Catherine, yes, she is a British princess although she is not Princess Catherine, just like “Princess Diana” was never that but she definitely was the Princess of Wales, ETC.

    • @Miuccia.
      @Miuccia. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kelly Day Catherine is not a princess like Diana, for exemple, was, she can be styled princess William of Cambridge but is not really a princess. However, she will be when Charles becomes king, William will inherit the duchy of Cornwall and become prince of Wales, and Kate will become princess of wales

    • @VeracityLH
      @VeracityLH 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's amazing how this gets mixed up. Philip is not Prince Consort, though he is consort to the monarch. The title Prince Consort has to be granted, as it was granted to Albert in 1857 (he was not Prince Consort until just 4 years before he died). Being a consort and being entitled as Prince Consort are 2 different things. There has been talk off and on that HM the Queen might create Philip the Prince Consort (at her Golden Jubilee, Diamond Jubilee, on their 70th wedding anniversary, etc) but it has never happened and it's doubtful it ever will. I think the Prince Consort title will likely be kept as something only Albert the Good was granted. While there was talk in 2005 that Camilla would be known as Princess Consort rather than Queen Consort when Charles reigns, this was a sop to those offended that Camilla was replacing Diana; it has no force of law and is not official and all talk of it since then as been dropped. At any rate, it was talk of *styling* not official titles, and these are two different things.
      As for Catherine and Diana, there is no Princess of Wales and there has never been a Princess of Wales *in her own right.* A couple of women were unofficially styled that way (Mary I for example) but it was never officially granted either. Both Catherine and Diana were Princess only in right of their husbands; Diana was officially "Princess Charles of Wales" and Catherine is officially "Princess William, Duchess of Cambridge." When Charles gains the throne and William is officially created Prince of Wales Catherine will become "Princess William of Wales." While Diana was granted the post-divorce title "Lady Diana, Princess of Wales" without the HRH, this was in line with the U.K. tradition of divorced wives retaining some remnant of their married title. Princess Margaret was Countess of Snowdon through her marriage, and her post-divorce title was "The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon" even after her husband the Earl of Snowdon remarried. I know this is confusing but that's the way it works. Had DIana remarried she would no longer have retained the "Princess of Wales" part. This is like a divorced woman retaining her husband's surname, which she usually changes when she remarries.
      Because of the new laws regarding absolute primogeniture rather than male primogeniture, if a female becomes the heiress apparent (as opposed to heiress presumptive as the Queen was before her father's death), that will be the first time there is a true Princess of Wales in fact rather than in unofficial style.

      Queen Elizabeth's father chose his bride and they loved each other. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon actually turned down his first two proposals because she wasn't sure if she wanted to live life as a royal. She eventually accepted because she loved him and neither of them thought that they would ever be king and queen. They thought they could just live life as minor members of the royal family. But of course that changed.

    Elizabeth was at Balmoral when Diana died, and William and Harry were with her. Her primary concern, as their grandmother, was for her grandsons, who were devastated by their mother's death. Realistically, she was in the unhappy position of being castigated for being either an uncaring monarch, or an uncaring grandmother, which is a no win position for a person to experience. The press, in my opinion, acted as though she had no right to put the two persons most affected by the tragedy as her first duty. Being Royal does not preclude having normal human emotions.

    Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953, at the age of 27. She came to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25. The monarch becomes King or Queen at the moment of the previous monarchs death. The crowning is set months later. You have accession and crowning messed up on many of the monarchs. Edward VIII was never crowned.

  • @tacosmexicanstyle7846
    @tacosmexicanstyle7846 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    You forgot one big thing-
    1760, the beginning of The Civil List.
    To fund his huge debts, George III asked parliament for a salary in return for rental income from the crown lands. Parliament took the offer guessing that the rental income would one day outweigh the salary...
    So, on top of voluntary income tax paid by the queen (as of 1992), the crown pays parliament 100% of its profits in return for a salary which has been defined as exactly 15% of the sum given to parliament. However this does not include the income from the Duchy of Lancaster.
    This makes the British monarch the most heavily taxed individual by marginal tax rate in history hence what you said about tax and the monarch being funded by the public is simply misguided.
    Another point, you made the queen seem quite cold when you mentioned her week away from the public after Diana died. In reality, the queen spent this time protecting the distraught Princes William and Henry from the press by hiding them at Balmoral. The queen is not dumb enough to piss off the public by making a statement such as "whatever I don't care that she's dead"
    Although, the evidence of Diana and the queen's personal relationship suggests that the queen was highly annoyed by Diana's extreme immaturity when dealing with her marital discord and her inability to be decisive about moving forward with her life.
    The final blow was Diana moping to the press and causing a scandal, so no I don't really blame the queen for hiding her grandkids. To me, Diana echoed Wallis Simpson in the way that she appealed endlessly to the press and demonised the royal family, who on all accounts have attempted to protect their own and their image as should be expected!

      The Crown Estate is a collection of lands and holdings in the territories of England, Wales and Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom belonging to the British monarch as a corporation sole, making it the "Sovereign's public estate". All of the profits from the Crown Estate go to government. The government keeps 85% and the remaining 15% is given to the monarch in the form of a Sovereign Grant (formerly the Civil List). For 2019, £343.5 million revenue was given to the government. www.thecrownestate.co.uk/media/3189/22668_the-crown-estate_ar_2019-interactive.pdf

      If he had a son, then she would never have been Queen. When she was born she was 4th in line for the throne, after her Uncles George and William and her father as her Grandfather George III was the ruler. Within a year she went up to second as both her grandfather and father died. Since George and William were separated from their wives, they had about 15 illegitimate children between them, so their relationships were not the best, and George's wife was about 50 and England did not allow divorce, then Victoria knew, as long as she could outlive her uncles, she would become Queen.
      The oldest Uncle George, separated from his wife within 2 years of their marriage. They had two children, one died by age 2. Charlotte was the other. Since he was not with his wife, Charlotte was raised to become the Queen as there would be no younger brothers. Therefore, her uncles Frederick, William, Edward, Ernest (age order) never bothered to marry since they had mistresses as their children would not become a ruler. When Charlotte died in childbirth at 21 to a stillborn, her mother was too old to conceive an heir. Frederick had passed so the other 3 uncles rushed to the alter, they were 50+ at the time. William failed at an heir, his died by age 2, Edward was Victoria's father and since he was older than Ernest, she got the crown.
