The savings on gas and maintenance lower you TCO considerably, and then on top of that I got almost 9K in tax rebates. It's the only car I've ever owned that I find is actually fun to drive. It's clean, it's simple, I hardly ever have to touch anything other then the steering wheel - almost everything is controlled by voice command (this is something completely overlooked by most testers); and the driving dynamic is amazing. I love the over-the-air updates it gets every month that makes it just keep getting better and better over time.
    The quality issues with Tesla are real, but completely overblown. I've had BMW, Honda, Toyota, Ford and Hyundai cars over the years. I'd rate my Tesla Model 3 fit and finish as definitely better than my Ford, and close to the BMW and Hyundai. Probably not as good as the Toyota though - that was flawless when I took delivery.
    Overall though, it's the combination of tech, performance, handling and just how enjoyable it is to drive that makes it a deserving winner of this award.

    I have owned a Tesla M3 SR+ for a year and 47.000 km and I absolutely love it. The styling, the Tech and the pure joy of driving this car makes this not only the best car I've ever had, it is the best product i've ever had. Amazing, breathaking. Rory, you are absolutely right. In the next few days I will make a video- review of my car and it will be very positive! Lots of people talk about the "terrible build quality" and to be honest is is not perfect, but have you taken a close look at some Mercedes- A-class and C-class cars? My car had a few minor issues, but the whole car is such an amazing product and so much ahead of the rest that I am willing to forgive it. A MA ZING. And as Rory states: It is absolutely mindboggling that this very young car company comes with this car that makes the competition look very, very old fashioned and dated. It must be very frustrating for brands like BMW to look at the Model 3 next to the new BMW 3-series and to see how far behind they are. When I invite people to drive my Model 3, I always warn them. Seriously. "Every other car you drive after this wil be very, very disappointing." In Fact, Tesla ruins every other car.

    It's the best car on the planet right now. Every car is a compromise, but this is as close as it gets to being the best car for the most people... It's super fast (I have a P3D so I know first hand), it's practical, efficient, safe, loaded with cutting edge technology, a great tourer, sports car, or kid shuttle car... It's as close to all things for all people (that people realistically need) as you can get... And I can smoke 99.99% of cars on the road! (Oh and the sound system is actually good... Over the past few years I've had an Audi RS3/BMW M3 F80/Merc C63 amongst other high performance sports cars and never thought I'd be driving (a silent) EV car just 6 months later as I loved a noisy car. Cold starts on the 6.2V8 C63 were epic and the RS3 with the sports exhaust was a great noise. I was never into the whole electric/green thing but as a company car with no BIK now, I bit the bullet and got a model 3 performance as it made more financial sense and haven't looked back.
    Having had the RS3 and Tesla model 3 together for a couple of weeks while the Audi was sold, I can tell you I loved the RS3 but after a week in the model 3, getting back into my beloved RS3 was a shock. The fast car I used to have all of sudden become slow, the gearbox (in manual on the paddles) felt even slower, the vibration and harshness I never noticed before was there and the tech felt very old fashioned with its tiny screen, having to peer through the top half of the steering wheel to see the dials (which where always partly obscured) and was overwhelmed with all the buttons - all of sudden I hated it! It genuinely felt like I'd gone back in time.
    Little things like not having a physical key, being able to cool the inside down in the Summer or Heat it/defrost (and turn all 5 heated seats) in Winter wherever I am from my phone are small thing but they all add up. Then theres the constant updates which are free and done on your driveway via your phone without having to go the tradional and out of date $tealers (who would prob charge a good whack just for updating your sat nav). The moral of the story is thats its very easy to bash EV's/Tesla when you've not lived with one for a very short time. I still look at the vids on YT on all the new performance petrol cars coming out and get the urge sometimes for a big engine but I honestly don't think I could go back to petrol now. They're all culled by the EU now and sound pretty crap anyway :/

    Drive 300 mile round trips in this (and stopped at a supercharger for 30 minutes cost of £11) so those that say you cant do long journeys in an electric car are wrong (check out Mr EV going to Italy in an Niro). @johnmckay1423 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Corvolet5 True enough - which is why I reckon a 300 mile range is about right. I rarely want to travel more than 300km (200 miles) without there being somewhere I want to stop that also has a charger. If the range was 200 miles, I would always have to think about how I drive it. With 300 mile theoretical range, I don't need to worry.
      I do accept that it still isn't enough for everyone, but it's more than enough for a lot more than the 7% market share they have in the UK.

    • @imac1957
      @imac1957 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is expensive up front, but I did the analysis comparing the M3 to getting another VW Jetta, and found that it was cheaper in Total Cost of Ownership to buy the Tesla than a VW. If you track your spending on fuel and maintenance you will probably get a horrible shock. Yes, I do about 40k km per year, which is more than many. Factor in the long life of a Tesla (few moving parts = not much to wear out - so 10 years and 400k km is very doable), and the likely excellent resale (judging from other Teslas), and the equation becomes very solid for Tesla. Then compare the driving experience of a diesel Jetta to a M3, the safety, the cool factor, and then the 1,000 litres of diesel you are not burning each year and it becomes a very good deal indeed. I love mine.

All joking aside it's a good car, to me it would be best bought used for half the price as a cheap runaround but it's far from the best car out there. For someone like me that does a lot of 200 miles plus trips one way to different states here in the US and even to Canada I can tell you that using a Tesla to make those trips would be miserable. I would never have a Tesla as my only car, but as a second car, sure. My personal, anecdotal opinion on what cars I think the public actually think are the best I would have to say BMWs, my neighbors are buying X3s, X5s and X7s by the loads, even X6s, even got a few new 3 series, 5 series and a new M5 in here. Audis were doing well for awhile but everyone seems to be switching to BMW. 100 homes just in here, one Model 3 and I think someone that just moved in last week has a Model X, that's it.

      Yessir. It's already replaced all ICE cars for me. Getting a Y this month to upgrade the wife's Explorer so we can accommodate kids and our 120lb/55kg shiloh shepherd on trips.

      Thanks for the replies people but the question was aimed at true petrol heads, not at everyday drivers. For me I would have an EV but only as part of my garage, if it had to be just 1 car no way is it going to be an EV, not until and unless I am absolutely forced to by evil governments, and if I did buy an EV it wouldn't be a Tesla for me, not with their poor build quality. I'd wait over next two or three years and see what the German lot are going to be releasing. Already at the top end of the spectrum I'd rather have the Taycan compared to its direct Tesla rival and the new VW ID3 looks interesting at the lower end as does the BMW i4 at mid end.

    Can I buy this car if I park my car on street and use only public charging stations

    • @peterford5408
      @peterford5408 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many people do that. And the charging situation worldwide will quickly improve this decade. But you should probably check the details for your personal circumstances.
      Long range model? Where's your nearest supercharger? Any public chargers at places where you shop? Check on Plugshare. How many miles per week?

    When is the last time you've seen *any* car excite enthusiasts and people that never cared about cars before in the same ways. This car is enough to convert non-car people into enthusiasts and do the unthinkable to enthusiasts...break brand loyalty. That says enough.

      My wife was set against buying a Tesla - she saw it as a mid life crisis sports car - but now she is the one who wants to drive it most, and is enjoying all the "oh" and "ah" she is getting from friends and family. Completely won over, and I have not even been able to explain how it is also saving us money!!!

    Not according to J.D. Power as it ranks dead last in quality issues...

    • @Cheradanine
      @Cheradanine 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      JD Power also ranks the Dodge as the best, which just about says it all. their ratings weigh all issues with a single mark so the gearbox falling out scores the same as a user querying how the radio works.

    I actually had a 20 minute drive with the Model 3 Performance and it was enough to blow my mind. I loved the handling and the performance! Even the comfort is pretty good considering it was on 20 inches alloys with low chassis!
    I actually have a Renault Zoe and a Golf and I’m thinking about getting rid of these 2 cars to get the Model 3 Performance. 😃

    I love my Model 3, and wouldn't trade it for anything on the market right now. Nothing, at any price point. I've had it for 2 years, and I still absolutely love it, whether I'm just driving to work, or on an 800-mile road trip with 3 friends.
    I was surprised to hear Rory say the speakers are "nothing to shout about." The Model 3's sound system sounds great to me (it's not going to compete with my Focal/Hsu Research/Onkyo home audio, but no car's OEM speakers will), and it seems to be regularly lauded as one of the better sound systems in cars today.
    Still, it's a little strange for a 2018 car to be named 2020's best car. The only changes Tesla has made since 2018 is to cut back on features to save money. Even though I'm not personally interested in owning a station wagon (sold as a "CUV"), the Model Y is probably more deserving of the 2020 Best Car title. It improves on the Model 3 in a number of ways (it is *objectively* a better-built vehicle than the Model 3), and... it's a 2020 vehicle!

    Your .02c is near worth zero. Yu are looking at it from a young person point of view. You really didn't get into the car. Does it have space to haul the goods we go for. I sometimes need room for 8'boards that I can in my Forester run up through the middle of the two front seats. Is it easy to load groceries into? How easy is it to access the trunk/ what ever you Brits call it. What I saw of a person in your piece driving, they looked cramped with little leg room. Why does the car have a hump between the seats with a battery and FWD. Leg room please. I don''t know how your right side drive use your left hand to use the screen.? Could lead to many accidents. Us older folks would like the SUV to stand a bit higher to get in and out of the car. Oh, did the back seat fold down? Does a charger come with the car? Extras, Extras?

    YES! Our "boosted" Model 3 dual motor long range is fantastic to drive. We LOOK for Porsches and Dodge Challengers at red light to humiliate them - most know better and hold back. Love it. I love the look, I love the white interior, I love the tech, and we look forward to the next software release as it it's Christmas morning. I paid for the white interior because it makes the whole car "pop". Best car we've owned.
