This video was AWESOME! The editing in between the live action is great! You know that satisfied feeling that you get after eating a really good meal? I feel that way after watching this.
The first time I found out the pictures in Pirates of the Caribbean were based on real people was when my newly married son’s wife pointed to Pirate Manwaring and said he was her ancestor. I was like what?! It was true. So amazing to hear about all the pirates. Thanks Chris for researching all this!
Fascinating. If you had told me a year ago that I would give money to someone so they could go to Disneyland and tell me about it, I would have said you were delusional. But, you, Amanda and Miles are so likable and your content is so informative; I'm on board (no pirate reference intended). Thanks for doing this deep dive and giving us the background. The production was amazing!
I don't understand why Disney didn't do a movie where Elizabeth goes off on her own and becomes a pirate. I would have liked to see what they could do with that plot.
Back in 2005, for the 50th anniversary of Disneyland (during their year of a million dreams event) a park guest won a contest and a mural of her was added to that collection in her honor. I'm honestly surprised you didn't mention that one! I wonder whatever happened to it??
Ah but if a Disney history memory is right in my head there was at one time a contest or a auction and the winner got to have there picture painted on the wall...
Mainwaring is pronounced Mannering Great video. There's a theory that Mary and Anne switched identities so that means it was Anne that gave birth and Mary was possibly disguised as a man again and able to hide in plain view.
This was so fascinating, excellent video Chris! I always see the POTC murals every time I walk in and I always wondered what secrets lurk behind these pirates. I didn't know they were so violently ruthless. The gags you put in the middle of the editing really add to the fun of your videos. Thank you for always teaching me new Disney history, everything you have been teaching me has been staying with me throughout my life as a Disney fanatic. Really awesome joke you asked Captain Redd, she is my favorite POTC character!
I usually see videos on pirates and already know the info but Chris did well on his research and brought up a bunch of things I didn’t know. I love the comment about doing piraty things like piecing ears for a buck.
"THE MATTERHORN TREE" === I love your videos and just became a Patreon member. Would you please show us "The Matterhorn Tree," how it blocks the Matterhorn from New Orleans Square, what kind of tree it is, and exactly where it's situated in Disneyland? Many, many thanks!!
Female pirates, historically, were just as bad as the men! And no, they didn't show any mercy. The British government had many of them sent to the gallows in the 19th century when the Golden Age of Piracy came to and end.
I would like to see you run through all the tombstones in the cemetery at both Haunted Mansions. Which are in both and which aren’t, who they are and way they are there. Even the pet cemetery and queue.
I LOVED this video! No one else could tell stories of a psycho pirate who tortures in such a lighthearted way! 😆 But so fascinating! I love videos like this.
What!? I had no idea that those murals were real pirates 🤯 I'm so annoyed with myself that I didn't know this!! Thank you for another interesting video 😊
Can you talk about all of the facts regarding The Golden Horseshoe? I bought a Trivia from the Valut book the last time I visited and the coolest random fact I learned from there was that the same guy who designed mainstreet buildings designed The Golden Horseshoe, and it was modeled after the stage from the movie Calamity Jane! (One of my favorite movies) Not sure if there's enough fun facts for a video, but just throwing it out there!
Anyone who thinks this ride wasnt PC from the day it opened, didn't know anything about pirates. They were not the nice, sweet characters that actors like Errol Flynn, Yul Brenner and Burt Lancaster portrayed in movies.
I strongly recommend the book "Under the black flag" by David Cordingly. He strips away all the glamor and explains what they were really like. It is NOT for the faint of heart and I recommend it only for children ages 15 and older unless parents read it with them. PS: Cordingly was a historical advisor for Disney Pictures on the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
@@largol33t1 an outstanding book. Also there is a huge amount of literature on pirates and piracy of the 16th and 17th centuries in naval archive's both here in the US and Britain. Not nice people, to say the least, but in a lot of incidents, were tools used by the British, French, and Dutch, against the great power in the Caribbean, the Spanish. And in turn, the Spanish used the pirates against their foes, quite often. And a pirate's main weapon, terror !

Thanks. I had good histories on Ann and Mary--but the other four I was going to look up. I spent my 65th birthday in Disneyland and wrote down the names of the four real male pirates for later research. You saved me a bit of research. Where was Pirate Red? I couldn't find that machine when I was there.
@@provostparkpass Thanks. I was there last Wednesday, and I don't know how I missed that large fortune-telling machine. Eleven years ago it was in the back of the store. I'll have to look Fortune Red up when I'm in Disneyland next time.

This was a great video. I would like to see you do a video of rides that have replaced rides that are no longer at Disneyland. Why does it take pirates so long to learn the alphabet? Because they can spend years at C
Fun fact: in "At world's end" when Liz and Jack tell their pirate allies to "hoist the colors," those were not made up by the production team. The flags were used by real pirates like Edward Low and Blackbeard. And the Chinese pirate was based on a real person, Madame Ching, who lived in the mid-1800s.
With Disneyland going so PC, I am surprised that they kept those morals up (knowing the history behind them was interesting). BTW why is there no moral for Redd, I thought maybe one the two ladies was her, but *nope.* Also why is Redd only in one spot on the ride (formerly the auction scene) and not represented nowhere else?
A moral is the lesson taught in a story. I think the word you're looking for us mural. Also, the murals in the queue represent actual pirates of the past other than Barbosa and Jack Sparrow. Redd isn't real, therefore isn't represented alongside actual pirates that existed or movie characters. I do like your idea, though, of having Redd be in more places as a recurring character. I would say that no other pirate is in more than one pace, but...there's Jack Sparrow. And I would be 100% okay with having Redd replace him as a character that shows up multiple times as part of the story,
This is actually an amazing and well thought out historic video, thank you for sharing!! I do wonder though what your thoughts are regarding one...... Jean... Lafitte. (Semi hidden Mansion and Pirates reference, I don't know who all else here follows Offhand Disney / crossover Disney lore) Also, here's my bad joke for the day!
