  • If Arceus is the god of the pokémon world, what are the Unown? Is it possible they act as the angels to Arceus? Could their inspiration come from biblically accurate angels? Could this explain the mysteries that still surround the Unown?

    Origin Palkia and Dialgia also fit into the category of Biblical Accurate Angel's while Arceus is a reference to God. I'm all for Christian lore in Pokemon!

    I like to think that you're on the right track. I think they function as angels who come to Arceus's aid and serve as a vehicle for its messaging, but there's more to it to me. I also think that it functions as a sort of divine code and universal history, like the Akashic Record.

    I think they initially started as just letters with no defined concept in the game development but they added more as the franchise went on, especially when Arceus was introduced. I don’t know if their abilities in the unown movie were the writers idea or discussed with the game devs but I imagine the movie inspired them to expand the concept of the unown in Gen IV, as evidenced by the first Pokédex entry mention of an odd power appearing when multiple come together not being until heart gold. Not to mention this was also the Gen where Arceus and the creation trio were introduced where they were starting to think more about the universe lore somewhat

    Kind of funny how the unown being "wheels of the chariot" correlate with the fact that the origin forms of Palkia and Dialga resemble horses, Giratina's tendrils look like Reigns and Arceus has the same exact color palette as Wyrdeer, the first rideable pokemon you get

  • @TheRCTAddict

    it's a much smaller and less consequential aspect, but I was thinking about this stuff myself recently - name why they're called "Ruins of Alph" in the first place, because the name is ever-so-slightly odd - and I found something interesting that I haven't really seen anyone talk about -- if I did, it was in GameFAQs forum threads from 10+ years ago and the replies to such suggestions were dismissive. "It just means alphabet, obviously."
    But, in fact, the name of the Ruins of Alph _isn't_ referring to the alphabet in their title-or at least, their Japanese name _アルフの遺跡_ isn't. If we break this down into segments - _遺跡_ means "ruins" or "archaeological site", _の_ is a possessive, and _アルフ_ ...is a shorthand for "alpha and omega," used in Japanese translations of the Bible, and thus very specifically a Judeo-Christian reference. Translated _literally_ , we can read the original Japanese name of "Ruins of Alph" as, instead, "Alpha and Omega's Ruins" or, more simplistically, "God's Ruins". This blew my mind when I realized this!
    It probably also explains somewhat *why* it was translated to lean more towards "alphabet" in English, as Pokemon was a hot topic of criticism and furor for religious conservatives in the 1990s and such a direct reference to religion would *not* have gone over well at all with this portion of the American audience.

  • @CallumMcPherson
    @CallumMcPherson 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I've always been fascinated by the connection between Unown and Arceus. The illustration in Spencer Hale's book gives your theory a lot of credibility, the resemblance to Ophanim is uncanny (and the man in the yellow robes even looks like Jesus!) Maybe the Unown are shaped like letters because they are the "Word of God"?

  • @APlusProds
    @APlusProds ปีที่แล้ว +7

    12:08 I have a personal theory I came up with about the Unown a few years ago is that the reason they appear as letters is because they were initially modelled or inspired by the “code” written in the game that the player doesn’t see but is there that makes the game (universe) run. That’s why the Unown are modelled after the Latin alphabet and they come out of thin air/wormhole/“space” when summoned or they need to or are shown to appear.
    Code is very powerful in video games, which is why the Unown are related to Arceus. You change the code, you change the game, meaning you change the universe. If Arceus can control Unown, Arceus can control the game/universe.
    Edit: I didn’t know you talked about the origin of Unown at 12:08, I didn’t get to that part of the video yet. Definitely was interesting but it still doesn’t prove my theory wrong.

    Unown are basically code

  • @riolunadraws
    @riolunadraws 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    fun fact: the 3rd anime movie also shows other forms of Unown - of different writing systems we have/had
    also! arceus' pokedex entry states that it used a thousand arms to form the universe. now, what makes up the fabric of space and time? Unown! best example are like mentioned when arceus creates the eggs in the sinjoh ruins or when dialga and palkia fight - they throw space and time into disarray, leaving Unown thrown out of their "realm"
    I feel like we should less think about real life religions being portrayed in fantasy world 1:1 and instead think about how maybe yes, it gets inspiration from real life, but also could be something original
    when talking about how Unown apparently taught people how to write or gift every being language or whatever you have to remember that in the pokemon world the writing system is very different to ours. yes, they have letters/syllables, but they still look very different to the Unown that have been shown in any pokemon media so far
    aaand then there's my theory that ash is actually the thousand original Unown that gained a consciousness and were tasked to protect the world from disasters

    Man this is so interesting unnown r theoretically angels is interesting and u posted this a perfect time happy Sunday bro 😁😁😁
    Also this might be a bit of a stretch but when we get the scarlet and violet dlc omaybe unown could get a paradox form and it'll be based on Arceus dex entry when it talks about being Arceus' thousand arms but the catch for the paradox form is the unkown controls Arceus and takes over it's body kinda like in the crown tundra dlc the Pokémon Calarex takes over peony (chairman rose's brother) during the big chunk of the story and the paradox unown would be a psychic dark type and as for the name it would be immortal husk and it'll be a scarlet exclusive thoughts 🤔🧐🧐

    I'm just here because I got curious about the Unown after not touching a Pokemon game since Junior High (Silver and Crystal). I randomly got the itch when i was reminded of them and had no idea what has happened in Pokemon since Gen 2.
    Now we're talking about multiple dimensions, Pokemon gods, and a poop ton of other stuff. Now Im just more confused. Man, i had no idea how much bigger and more wild the franchise got 🙃
    Now at 31, I think im gonna jump back in.

    Here's my question: Why, even in Japanese, are the Unown the modern Roman/Latin alphabet plus and exclamation point and question mark? Is it just because in Gen 2 it would have been a nightmare to have around 200 variants of Unown to represent Japanese characters?
