Repurposing Obsolete Rifles: The Lebel R35 Carbine

The French military had investigated the possibility of a Lebel carbine in the 1880s, but by the 1930s a different set of priorities was in place. In an effort to make some use of the vast stockpiles of obsolete Lebel rifles France had, a plan was put in place to shorten then into carbines for auxiliary troops like artillery crews and engineers. These men needed some sort of rifle or carbine, but they did not need the best and newest weapons. By giving them shortened Lebel carbines, it would free up more modern rifles like the M34 Berthiers in 7.5mm and the new MAS-36 rifles to go to the front line infantry who needed them most.
The R35 conversion was developed by the Tulle arsenal and adopted in January of 1936. The French government ordered 100,000 to be made, and deliveries began in April of 1937. Production would accelerate and continue right up to the spring of 1940, with a total of about 45,000 being actually delivered before the armistice with Germany. The conversions were all assembled at Tulle, but 4 other factories manufactured barrels for them: Chatellerault (MAC), St Etienne (MAS), Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques (SACM), and Manufacture d'Armes de Paris (MAP). These barrels were 450mm long (17.7 inches), and with the similarly shortened magazine tube, the R35 carbines held just 3 rounds. Production would not continue after the liberation of France in 1944.
So it's a rear line rifle made free up front line rifles that were actually rear line rifles made to free up front line rifles.

It'd be the ideal thing for hunting feral pigs in underbrush. Those things can be nasty, to the point where in Australia, hunting feral pigs with the aid of dogs requires the dogs to wear armoured chest plates (the pigs in question have tusks!). If you are caught short without one in the chamber, being able to put twenty inches of steel out in front of you could be a lifesaver. A death from feral pig claims one of the characters in Colleen McCullough's novel "The Thorn Birds".

I picked up a 1940 marked one of these in real nice shape. Came with 200 rounds of Syrian mg ammo. A batch of Boxer brass with dies and bullets. To me recoil is not that stiff. Well worth my 135.00 investment :-)

I think the appropriate sound for the "U" in Tulle is just something completely foreign to the English language. I could say it's similar to the German "Ü", but that's getting us nowhere. :D

The actual French pronounciation would be "Tull", the E at the end is silent.
Even in the south, the final "e" is pronounced very softly and unstressed. Well, maybe not in Marseille, but that's all.

Love mine. It is a bear to shoot though. Someone in my family brought it back after the war and was ignored in the will, so when I discovered it I was given the rifle. It’s this gun that got me into collecting historical firearms.

Great video! I just won a Lebel R35 carbine at auction. After watching this video, I am so excited to pick it up next week. I had to have this gun as my namesake is Lebel, and I already had bought the cool Lebel Rosalie bayonet that was originally paired with this rifle before it was sent off to the auction. I even managed to recently get my hands on two boxes of new Privi ammo so I am ready to go!

They actually came back after WWII and after the French Army tried to get rid of it they popped up again in Algeria, but in the hands of the FLN this time around.
Rumor has it if you enlist in the french military and you ask your armorer nicely, they'll hand you a spare lebel.

The ones still left in my series are the MAS 44, MAS 49, MAS 49/56, MAS-36/51, and MAS 36 CR 39. Oh, plus the Meunier A6 and the MAS 49/56 MSE. And the Chassepot and Gras variations. :)
Don't Forget that after that, you still have to do the machineguns and submachineguns with the STA 24, MAS 38, HOTCHKISS mle CMH2, MAS 48-C3, MAT 49, Darne mle 33, Reibel MAC 31, AAT-52 and AANF1 ;)

Ian just forgot one little thing... There was another difference with the original Lebel : the long rifle was blued, except the bolt, the buttplate and the trigger guard, left in the white. The R35 parts were all parkerized and the barrel, receiver, handguard and nosecap were covered with a black paint, baked in oven for a better resistance, just like the MAS 36. You can see it clearly here

Ian I caught your video with Bloke; what's the MOA on this rifle?
I traded some motorcycle parts for a sportsterized MF1937 marked model with a bent bolt, allowing for a scope mount. Fitted with a highly figured buttstock with monte carlo cheekpiece and a wide and checkered front stock ending at the first band. Its a nice deer and elk gun and the three shot mag is perfect for that. Any idea if this is a one off custom or something that was done fairly common with the R35?

Hello Ian, thank you for your videos and what you do to promote french history. Just one thing regarding the markings : The R35 rifles were made from either original " long " Lebels or from blank parts that were not used after WW1. So to distinguish a R35 rebuilt from an original long Lebel or a " new " made one, the R35 marking is in line with "Mle 1886" when it's a new made one like the one in your video and it's under the "Mle 1886 93" marking when it's built from an original long one. I plan to to a long video about this, I hope, in the next months.
I think Ian might be the only large gun youtuber, who pays any real attention to French weapons.....and thats a shame.
From what I can tell most TH-cam small arms content is Amerocentric given it’s mostly American creators funded by their local small arms industry. I watch less than a third of the content that comes through my subscriptions because it’s just not relevant.
With Ian I learnt about so many firearms I didn't even know existed whether they be cheap mass production SMG's or indigenous rifles from small countries. Other fire arm channels tend to do the mainstream western firearms such as the M16, M82 etc. Ian is probably the best one out there as he tells you the history and takes apart the firearm. That's why we love him.

@@Alan.livingston That is most TH-cam channels, the worst is tech channels by far. Either you get a channel that is a sellout or praises linux. Linux is the worst OS ever made, it makes MS-dos look like windows 10, it only survives because its free and server hosts use it. Looking at most firearms channels either they try to sell you on getting a 10,000$ gun or have bias information. Some of them only do it to inflate the value of a particular firearm, since youtube fame increases the value of something by a significant margin.
You said that the m93 markings were scrubbed and replaced with the r35 but i was looking at one of these in a gun shop and it still had the m93 marking with the r35, however the barrel was dated 1937 so maybe it was something they decided to change later on

You missed AEG barrels as well. You have one but did not mention it. There is also a cavalry version with the stock sling on the side, like a Berthier carbine late model. The Germans had some of these made in Krakau using French barrelled receivers and parts to assemble them.
Just bought one in excellent condition with a bayonet after wanting a lebel for years. Want to get the full sized one as well
Before this series on French rifles I knew next to nothing of them. Now after watching Ian's videos I have developed a soft spot for the Berthier and the whole thing has resulted in me reinstalling Arsenal of Democracy so I can play as France!

Since I own one of these, let me say that wanting to shoot one is the best incentive to get into hand loading. Anything approaching full power ammo will rock your world….and not in a good way. However hand loading mild cast bullet loads makes this a very enjoyable rifle to shoot. Since they received new barrels in the relatively short period leading up to the armistice, they are your best bet for a minty bore Lebel.

I've recently taken an interest in French firearms. Is there any reference material on post-WWII French firearms? It's a bit hard to slough through the internet looking for information.
Tim B there probably are. I’d start by looking for well known publishers of firearms and see if they have any books on them.
The one good book out there is Jean Huon's "Proud Promise" about French semiauto rifles, which covers the MAS 44, 49, and 49/56.

Yes, a bunch. In particular, early lever action "trapper" carbines. If you look up the ATF's C&R list, it has a whole section listing these exemptions.
Using these carbines for rear-echelon troops is the same thing that the US did with the M-1 Carbine.
Many of its vices are due to being an emergency production. If France had a bit more time I Wonder if they might have tried making a "magnum" powered pistol carbine by creating a new cartridge with the same rim dia. but a shorter case to allow for more rounds in the magazine ?
Maybe with the Bullet used in the 8x27R ?
Even just downloading the case with the 8mm pistol bullet would have made the weapon easier to use. The 7,8g or 120gr bullet could have been pushed to 1800/2000 fps with out much issue as it is jacketed.

I have a Larga 65 with a broken off bolt handle. I can't find parts anywhere especially since it was made in Argentina.

Hi can someone explain the “only dropped once” shirt for me? I don’t get the reference.
There is a common joke among US gun collectors about French rifles being never fired and only dropped once, because soldiers dropped them and fled (I think it started because of the imports of factory refurbished MAS 36 rifles being imported, which looked brand new). My point with the shirt is that they were typically dropped only once: when the poilu carrying them was killed in combat.
There's an overused meme of sorts in the gun community about French rifles that were "never fired, only dropped once", supposedly when French troops quickly surrendered. The shirt is a rebuttal to that, a reference to all of the very brutal battles the French were in in WW1... and their rifles were only dropped when they died.

Some sort of Carbine Mosin-Nagant. Cheap gun, Cheap ammo. Reliable and good bullet.

How did they deal with the potential problem of bullet tips impacting primers during firing? The spitzer, straight-walled nature of the 7.5 cartridge seems like it would be a problem.
On his other video last week, he said the tip of the bullet was angled in the magazine so it didn't sit on the primer and the back of the shell casing had a lip for it to sit in.

8mm does have a spitzer bullet but the way the case is shaped the taper is too great for that to happen
The rounds aren't 'parallel' in the tube, they angle down because of the shape of the case

He then loaded them in a tube magazine fed rifle and fired it remotely . He couldn't get a magazine discharge after several rounds . Can anyone out there find a verified story of Spitzer bullets causing a tube magazine discharge ? Maybe the whole tube discharge fear is unfounded. Not that I'm going to use myself or my rifle as a guinea pig . I've loaded soft point Spitzer bullets in 30-30 Win for my Savage 24V-A . She's an over -under double gun , 30-30 over 20ga. Those rounds shot well , but I've never killed game with them .

My first guess as to purpose was police carbine or similar civil service agency like forest ranger or postal service. Was there a Lebel or Berthier developed for the civil service?
French civil services aren't armed, aside from the Police Nationale. Even municipal police isn't armed, and those days it's a hot topic - although most people would fear the bunch of simpleton they hire to carry a gun :) Only a few municipalities have the proper budget to buy weapons and maintain them trained anyway.
Forest services can be seen with guns, but it's their own personnal gun, their personal licence, as wildlife regulation is made in accordance with local hunter. Makes everyone happy.

The obvious and sensible thing the French Ordnance Dept should have do with such rifles they declared obsolete is to sell them as surplus, sell the old stocks of 8mm ammo as well. Then use the money from surplus to ramp up production of new modern rifles. If you really need these rifles because you're being invaded then the best place they can be is scattered all over the country and if you don't know where they are then the enemy can't know either.

Almost. The French "u" that has no equivalent sound in English, and the double "l" is pronounced as dragging on it. So "Tewll" wous ble closest, I think.
It's trickier than that. It is (around here anyway) pronounced but only just. As you finish saying 'tull' you throw in a soft token ''eh' as you relax the tongue to finish 'tull'. Don't worry about it. My French club colleagues are always asking each other about what is the correct grammar and pronunciation for assorted things. The older ones revert to the local patois which is a species of Occitan and incomprehensible to most of the others.

An OLD school bolt action lebel with a tube mag that holds a whopping 3 rounds. In WW2. WOW. I can't say that I would be filled with confidence in my superiors with THAT sort of armament...
At least the US gave rear line guys M1 Carbines.
The US was under no direct threat; also, you have to remember that in the 1920's and 1930's, because of WWI and the Spanish Flu, the French population was weakened, losing 4 million people, most of them men, in 4 years. Survivors of the war were not willing to go at war, and the military budget was cut to allow more spending for rebuilding and reinvigorating the economy. People wanted to forget war. Many army projects were delayed or never made, which explain why by the mid 30's the French army was equipped with obsolete tanks, had almost no planes, and still had those 8mm Lebel rifles available.
Ironically the government that reacted the most and dropped much money in military was the leftist "Front Populaire" (alliance of the Socialist and Communist parties). But it was 1936 and it was too late to make enough new guns , so repurposing obsolete guns was a temporary "good" solution.

And, yet, if the rear line guys ever came under attack, they weren't being attacked by rear line guys with bolt action rifles designed in the LATE 1800s, with a tube mag whose capacity was REDUCED to all of 3 cartridges.
Again, there were ground soldiers - ANY ground soldiers - in WWII that were given a late 1800s bolt action with tube mags that were reduced to 3 round capacity. To defend themselves with. Seriously.
I understand why France had to do that. I was just saying that even being rear line it doesn't make that a good option compared to what other rear line troops were getting. Certainly the situation in France didn't allow for anything better and they made with what they had.

Dank Memes ... If your question is meant as posted ... I would say yes, the volume of ALL versions of bolt action rifles manufactured combined would outnumber the production of AK-47 style rifles.

I have not looked into what they may have returned to Vichy forces, but the Germans did use substantial amounts of captured French arms themselves. A lot of it went to troops on the Atlantic Wall and occupation duties, where they were not expected to see combat and thus the logistics of ammunition and parts supply were not all that important.
+Hunter Smith. I guess they didn't. The Germans wanted a Vichy state with a very weak army. The Milice (fascist paramilitary organisation) was equipped as bad as the french resistance.

I agree on the armor-piercing argument. As to maximum firing range, I don't think the R35 carbine could reach that far!
It will reach; it just won't reach with anything resembling accuracy or consistency unless the area you're trying to hit is the size of a football field. And to be fair, rifle sights out past a thousand yards or so weren't really meant for anything except mass volley or area fire anyway.
Pistol would have much less stopping power, and effective range with them, if memory serves, is usually around 25-50 metres. Especially if you consider that we're talking French who were using .32 ACP guns and 7.65 Longue, which was similar.
A carbine like this would allow you to legitimately engage something 100-200 metres away and hurt it plenty if you do hit.

Mas 38/39 and Ma 40were semi automatic rifles. They were produce after WW2 as MAS 44 and Mas49
