the reason Matteo is funny is because he's bursting with intelligence and talent, and can pivot on a dime. it was really interesting to hear how he develops his routine
God it would be so exhausting to be one of those “manly” dudes who feels like he has to police every word he says, every little action, how he walks, how he talks, etc etc … for fear of possibly looking even a tiny bit effeminate. We can all tell it’s an act.
It's funny how in the UK we have had Paul O'Grady, Graham Norton and Alan Carr but then they're also mainly famous for doing their own chat shows? I think the British way of "using" gay comics is to position them as the friendly but witty comics your grandma might enjoy watching interview more famous people. It's less about them being standup comedians and more about how they engage with other celebrities? Maybe that speaks to their worth in the TV exec's eyes, that if they were to have their own set, it would be "too much" for an audience?
@seriousbinch3749 Julien Clary, Joe Lycett, Alan Carr, Tom Allen, Simon Amstell do stand-up sets, Paul as Lily did huge prime time stand up. We also have newcomers, Stephen Bailey, Josh Jones and Mawaan.
Matteo told the story of that happening about 8 years ago when he was hired to be the entertainer at a bougie gay pride fundraising dinner in Pennsylvania, but during that set he actually revealed that it was Kimmel who told him that. Mr. "ally to the gays" Kimmel. Indeed.
I would say that Matteo is on the cusp of being a household name. Maybe a gay version of the blue collar troupe could get him the rest of the way there.
Not for standup. He's a household name to the sort of Rogansphere type. The "he makes fun of Whitney Cummings, therefor I like him" crowd. His standup isn't good. It's also not widely viewed. Matteo Lane has a combined 10+ million views on his specials. Tim Dillon has a 20 minute "special" on youtube that barely scratches 500k views. I'm not saying one is better than the other. One just gets A LOT more views and that's Matteo Lane lol
What's the best drug addict comic? Or best alcoholic comic? Or best sportsman comic??? The comic isn't supposed to have much of an identity, right? You don't win friends and influence people by telling people about your identity Plus, identity is so much more than sexuality. Of all the freebasing auto-pyros, Pryor is my favorite 😂
Sexual identity is an inherent part of EVERYONE. Heterosexual comedians present their sexual identity in their material pretty much constantly when they talk about their relationships, the sex they have, dating, etc... But when a non-heterosexual comic talks about those same subjects, suddenly they have "too much of an identity." I see.
Any comedy that I can’t relate to (at all) won’t make me laugh. So, while I’ve tried to like gay comedy, it doesn’t make me laugh only because I can’t relate to it. Oh well.
Eddie was amazing back in the day as he always stated that he was a man that wore (stereotypically) women’s clothes. Now he says he’s in girl mode and freaks out young girls in public toilets and blames them for upsetting him.

“So straight, it’s gay.” Is something so so so many dudes don’t realize they’re performing every day. 😂
truth
Especially Nick DePolo 😂

I'd say in the US, but in the UK, there are definitely gay comics that are household names.

Matteo is becoming as successful as he is in part because he’s obviously smart and has real wisdom about these things
"your set was too gay" ok, now I REALLY want to see that set :D
Matteo told the story of that happening about 8 years ago when he was hired to be the entertainer at a bougie gay pride fundraising dinner in Pennsylvania, but during that set he actually revealed that it was Kimmel who told him that. Mr. "ally to the gays" Kimmel. Indeed.
Love Matteo Lane!
Tim Dillon hardly talks about being gay. He works overtime to appeal to the MAGA crowd
no he doesn't
Exactly! He wants to make money
Have you considered he’s just a gay conservative and isn’t saying this shit to win over a crowd.
6:08 omg the gaytalian ding sent me 😂😂
I would say that Matteo is on the cusp of being a household name. Maybe a gay version of the blue collar troupe could get him the rest of the way there.
A household name? I've never even seen or heard of him before, and now plan to steer back in that direction.
@@dubns Do you even like stand up comedy?
@@dubns poor snowflake
Good idea!
You're a household name for newer Matteo. *MUAH*
I feel bad for gay people who only had Kathy Griffin to watch back in the day
Speaking of, Mario Cantone would be a good guest on the pod!
4:44 Respectability. Credibility. Permissibility.
Paul O'Grady and Julian Clary performed in 80s
Jeff Arcuri
Ellen? Rosie O Donnell?
Which is why they specifically said gay MEN comics.
6:12 OMG…oh my god…ermagerd…
Eddie isn't gay 😂
But she is part of the queer community, so the point holds.
Queer visibility bb
It confuses people lol.
As she now identifies as a trans woman, and exclusively dates women, yes...she IS gay. And she goes by Suzy now.
She’s a lesbian.
Let’s be real…..Tim barely counts
Tim is a bath house gay. I.e. masculine.
I would say Tim Dillon is a household name these days...

Who?
Progressive gay comedy isn’t funny. Matteo does a good job but lots of his jokes mainstream doesn’t understand.
Alas.
What does this even mean, Matteo himself is progressive lol
@@onediplimit That’s what I mean. He’s not funny. He has some decent material.

How can you convince me you’re not a bot
So being gay is in the same category as alcoholics, drug addicts and sport nuts? You must be an intellectual 😅

It’s cool. I’m as gay as a Maypole, and I love Rickles and Dangerfield. And Joel Kim Booster and Fortune Feemster. Whatever floats your comedic boat!
Only of your culture and no women?
As a gay I have to say that gay jokes are funnier when said by a straight comic 🤷♂️
That dude calling Eddie Izzard, a man that identifies as a male lesbian, as a woman made me swap the video.
Eddie Izzard came out as trans several years ago and in fact goes by the name Suzy now... so...
How did he make you “swap” the video exactly….and what did you get for it?
Eddie was amazing back in the day as he always stated that he was a man that wore (stereotypically) women’s clothes. Now he says he’s in girl mode and freaks out young girls in public toilets and blames them for upsetting him.
The fuck is a male lesbian?
@@beatnickblanket whelp, can’t win them all. Still love his old shit 🫡
You mean to tell me white, fairly masculine men are the only gay comedians accepted on higher platforms?? No!! 😭😭😂🤣
