    I have watched quite a few TH-cam’s on using Inkscape to make shadow layers and this is by far the best one to date. I have not yet tried Inkscape because it just looked to involved and difficult to learn. You’ve made it simple and I think given me the courage to give it a shot. You are a blessing! Thank you!

    Hi there fist off a BIG thankyou for sharing your knowledge here on Inkscape I have a plotter and pc that has Flexi sign loaded this needs EPS files to cut the vinyl I have converted clipart and other images from the net and vectorized them in Inkscape but when I try to edit these files in flexi sign there is a box around the images so this will not allow me to apply outline along with general sizing the images as the software sizes tt ohe box so this get very wastefull on vinyl . So Im sure this will be a easy fix when you know what you are doing .

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I am not familiar with Flexisign, Mark. Is there a way to ungroup or release the design inside FS to delete the box, maybe. Or you might try saving as SVG and then converting to EPS via another route such as cloudconvert.com etc.

    so I've been trying to learn to do this, and found this video. Only the video is almost 5 years old now, and it doesn't work for me, following the step by step as you do it. I want to be able to just put the line around a word, like the first time you click the paint can and click oh the word, then you went back and clicked the T and did it too. Maybe I missed something in this tutorial, but say I make a word with 5 different layers. How do I do this but make each outline its own layer? Currently it treats everything as one layer which displays sub layers as transparent or makes the original layer below the larger outlines.

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, each new path is on top of the last one in stacking order, so if you want them small to large you will need to reorder them (Extensions>Arrange>Restack>Based on Z-order tab>Reverse Z-order) or manually put them on their own layers.

  • @deannatetreault5119

    • @cleversomeday

    Thank you so much this is perfect and worked a treat, now just one question...... I am a scrapbooker how do i get this to print the word & cut out round the border in cricut DS? if you can answer that my life will be nearly complete lol.

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      All you would need to do is select both layers in DS and flatten. If you don't want the outer layer to print, change it to white before you flatten.

    You have fill at none before you even start and stroke with a Color. . My fill shows the black for touchdown . When I go to no paint makes it clear and not a solid . I can’t seem to get it like yours

      Please watch the intro video referenced in the description above to learn how to set your defaults like mine; or just work in Outline mode.

    I can’t get the “node mode” to show up. The bubble keeps separating the beginning of the word from the end

      Be sure you are holding down the shift key when making additional clicks with the bucket.

    When I try this, it just makes random blobs of color. I was really hoping I'd come here and at least one other person said same thing but I guess it's just me? Meh.

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really is the same problem others are having, just manifesting differently. Your defaults and settings are not the same as mine and need to be adjusted. Be sure to watch my Paint Bucket Basics video to learn how to do that. Link is in the description of this video.

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Change the defaults you are using for the Paint Bucket Tool, or change the fill and stroke after you click, or just use the Outline View so you can ignore all that.

      if you get a blob of color, that is the fill color. X out the fill and you will be left with a stroke line

    I’m having trouble exporting.. I believe I followed all the steps correctly but when I save and upload it to design space it only has one layer to cut instead of the 3

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kristal. You probably need to convert the original layer to a path. The easiest way to do that is to select the text block then select Path>Union. This always has to be done with text for it to import properly into DS.

  • @dianep4
    @dianep4 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    After changing to path and saving as a SVG i have a problems seeing image in DS. I see the layers but image doesnt show up on the grid. Which is strange. Even saving image on desktop its white. When uploading i see the words and colors of layers in the panel but not in the canvas

    • @cleversomeday

      This is a new bug in DS. Use the width and heigh boxes to reduce the size, and set x and y to bring it into the field of view.

    Also how come when I get paint bucket then set the 18 then click on a letter it automatically puts and entire (red) border around/over text and I have to send to back to see letters but I have no way of getting a second outline let alone a pink outline and any welding ...
    .... I think it has something to do with Phil and stroke but I can’t seem to change it...

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your shape is filled instead of just a stroke like I have so the top shape obscures what is underneath. Please see the description above for an intro video that explains this.

      @@cleversomeday I’m sorry but what description above?? The video above is what I was watching and I can’t figure out how to get a double outline of diff colors when every time I click with paint bucket I only get one overlapping large coloured image but never one bigger and bigger like you seem to be able to get... (2 layers once size)

The video description is found directly below a video when viewing it on TH-cam and is the first place you should look when you have a question about a video. In this particular case, since you already guessed the issue you could google "How to Change Fill and Stroke in Inkscape "

    I tried this and all it did was fill my letter with a color. what am I doing wrong? Correction. When I click on the letter it fills in the letter with a color, not just an outline like yours, and its making the fill layer on top of the original text. So I have to move the text layer to the front and then the fill layer is behind the text but it isnt just an outline

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephanie Smith I have mine set to display as a outline so that it shows up better in the videos, then I change to fill later. You can set it however you want and the result is the same. If you are not getting the offset then recheck your tool settings to make sure they are set like mine. Those do matter.

      Most of the time people have trouble, it is because they are using different fill and stroke settings than I have in the video. Please see my Paint Bucket Basics video for more info.

    Hello Thanks so much for your tutorial. I'm having a little trouble and wanted to if you could help me. I'm trying to make a shadow layer for one word that isn't welded togther. I hope that made sense lol. I have a picture to show what I'm trying to say Thanks

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the letters are separate, it the same as with the T in this example. Just hold down the shift key as you click to combine the outline. You will need to pick the width of your shadow to connect or not connect the letters as desired.

  • @mariarodriguez18092
    @mariarodriguez18092 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question, how do you get the layer to connect when you have spaces between letters?

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can put a dummy shape or letter in the space then delete it. Or you can use a larger enough grow setting to get them to connect, then shrink it back in the opposite direction to tighten it up.

  • @outofhandco.9831
    @outofhandco.9831 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have my settings exactly like you show, but instead of an outline I get shading. Like a shadow as an outline.

    • @cleversomeday
      @cleversomeday  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      check your fill and stroke settings, including opacity, or just use outline view so that those settings don't matter and you can see the cutlines instead.
