Before Mark Ruffalo or even Edward Norton were Bruce Banner; and with Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts coming up as part of the MCU Multiverse saga developing over Phase 5, John & Tara Erickson watch & react to Ang Lee's Dramatic Superhero Epic, HULK - giving their review, recap, & breakdown of the film that stars Eric Bana as Dr. Bruce Banner, Jennifer Connelly as Betty Ross, Sam Elliot (General Thunderbolt Ross), Nick Nolte (Dr. David Banner), Josh Lucas (Glenn Talbot), Cara Buono (Edith Banner) & more + cameos by Marvel Comics Founder Stan Lee and The Incredible Hulk TV Show's Lou Ferrigno! HULK SMASH!!
Here's our reaction to the best scenes / movie clips such as The Gamma Accident Scene, The Hulk is Born Scene, You're Making Me Angry, Hulk vs. Hulk Dogs, Absorbing Man, the Talbot Confronts Hulk fight, Hulk Breaks Out, Send in the Tanks, He's Got My Missile, Father vs. Son and more!!
With Hulk's recent appearance in the She-Hulk Disney+ series and Harrison Ford set to assume the role of Thunderbolt Ross from the late Wiliam Hurt, hailing a potential arrival of Red Hulk, it will be fascinating to see what the future holds for Marvel's Angriest Avenger. And while we don't necessarily expect to see Eric Bana back in the role anytime soon, now that we've covered the Blade, Ghost Rider, & Fantastic Four Movies, we're more prepared than ever for whatever surprise cameos Avengers: The Kang Dynasty & Secret Wars have to throw our way!

Your reaction is so interesting. I think this movie may have been extremely ahead of its time. Watching the film again with you guys really makes me appreciate it a lot more than when I first saw 20 years ago. The Hulk dog scene in particular is something that many comic book movie fans absolutely hated. I think if this movie came out today with a bit of updated CG and a slight color change on the Hulk in particular, I think he would have looked a little bit more real and could have really worked today. A few different editing choices and comic book panel transitions removed and the central theme of Bruce Banner's trauma could have worked very well with today's audience. This movie got so much hate when it was first released and I was definitely one of them. We didn't particularly like it all too much but like I said after rewatching it with you today I see it very differently.

I think some of the writing and performances in this are highly underrated ngl. The film has its problems but it’s very emotionally impactful. Bruce’s childhood trauma from the comics and general psychology is represented really well here.

Hulk was the Incredible Hulk origin story that we didn't know we needed at the time. Our attention spans hadn't matured yet. (and the gamma dogs/final battle were... two chooses???) But overall, as an origin story that shows off the powers of the Hulk, it hasn't been done better.

They did a phenomenal job with the casting of the younger versions of David Banner and Thunderbolt Ross in the Flashback scenes. Of course, Sam Elliott really nailed his role in this movie!
Also, with Josh Lucas (who plays Talbot), Hollywood gave him a shot at being a CHARISMATIC LEAD in a straight action movie, Rob Cohen's Stealth (2005). That movie, oddly enough has been compared to Top Gun (which you mentioned here :). I would love for SOMEONE to finally make a reaction to that movie! COULD YOU please do a reaction to that 2005 movie?

The Gamma dogs appeared in hulk comics (Dogs of War, Incredible Hulk (Vol. 2) #14) about 3 years before this film therefore yes it is a comic thing. This film is still the most faithful adaptation in live action and while it has aged quite a bit.. i still love it!!

Critics and die hard Marvel fans have named this The Worst Hulk Movie Ever Made, but I think it's pretty impressive in scale and storytelling.
Originally, Eric Bana and Lou Ferrigno were going to reprise their roles as The Hulk VIA CGI, where they were going to have cameos in SPIDERMAN NO WAY HOME. Unfortunately they were cut from the movie.
Development for the movie began in 1990, with Joe Johnston and one time, Jonathan Hensleigh, were considered for directing before Ang Lee and James Schamus were brought on board.
Jonathan Hensleigh, John Truman, JJ Abrams, Michael France, Zak Penn, Michael Tolkin, David Hayter, Scott Alexander and Larry Karazewski wrote different drafts of the script between 1997 and 2002.
David Duchovney, Billy Crudup, Steve Buscemi, Jeff Goldblum, and Johnny Depp were considered for the title character until Eric Bana was cast.

His dad is Absorption man one of hulks enemies and Hulks anger is endless. My dad told me he can breathe underwater the angrier he gets the bigger he grows he can be in space. I honestly like the way this hulk spoke and he wasn’t always on a rampage. Bruce was reliving his memories through Hulk’s eyes, the military attacks him, he’s of course pissed tf off. When Hulk said puny human that was hulk basically saying “We tried your way I’m taking over now” until he saw Betty.

Other than turning him into a giant in order to show "The angrier the Hulk gets, the STRONGER THE HULK GETS", the movie stuck really close to the comics. The biggest changes - renaming Brian and Rebecca Banner David and Edith, and renaming his adopted family Krenzzler instead of Walters. Also, as a sufferer of Multiple Personality or Dissociative Identity Disorder, there's actually more than one Hulk running around in Bruce's head, each with varying levels of strength and Intelligence. Savage Hulk is the strongest but least intelligent, Joe Fixit is the meanest but rather mid-range in everything, Professor is the smartest but lacks the other Hulk's ability to increase his strength, and Devil - the Immortal Hulk - is the toughest since he literally cannot die.

The significance of such scenes in this movie and the later ones, is to let audiences that followed the "CBS" series with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno, know that this version won't be dying just because he fell from a, ahem, "incredible height"! 🙄 (See the series finale, "Death of the Incredible Hulk"!)

I get why you'd feel that way about Ruffalo's Hulk but I also feel like he had it the hardest. The rest had full movies or series to flesh out their character. Ruffalo was a side character in several movies, sometimes getting some character development but a lot of it also happens completely off-screen. Marvel really should have given Ruffalo a standalone movie, or at least an ensemble movie that focused on Banner/Hulk.
Also, didn't Eric Bana and Bill Bixby only play Banners? You included their Hulk counterparts in that list already.
