I have no idea how an M’s team trying to shed a big contract can get 2 young MLB-ready bats, a basically free Jeff McNeil, and maybe the highest upside pitcher in the Mets system. There is no way that another team is offering that while taking on the contract. His Home/Road splits are also terrible. Almost a full run and a half higher away from Seattle
If the Mets take on Castillo's salary, the prospect ask goes down. If they include McNeil and Cohen just decides to eat McNeil's remaining money (a la Scherzer and Verlander), the prospect ask goes WAY down. If Castillo does get traded, it'll either be Mets due to their ability to take on the money, or the Red Sox with their farm depth (assuming they still have an appetite to trade prospects after the Crochet trade.) I like Castillo because of his durability and incredibly high floor. He always goes 150 innings or more (he did not go over 150 in his rookie year and the 60-game 2020 season - both situations were beyond his control.) I like him the most of all the remaining pitchers allegedly available (assuming the Pirates put the drugs down and thought better about dealing Jared Jones.) But if the ask is too much, I'd much rather just go get Manea back in the fold and/or Buehler, and/or Pivetta. Corbin Burnes will want too many years for Stearns's taste.
You don't sign Soto and not add an ace. We need a Manaea, Castillo type and then a Burnes or Cease kind of SP. No reason to take the foot off the pedal now.
Yessir. And you also don’t sign Soto and not sign Alonso, and at least another decent bat to hit around him in this lineup, but it looks like the Mets are about to do all of these things. Soto is gonna have a tough time carrying this entire team on his back all by himself next year. Maybe they are just conceding a third place finish next year, then trying to grab Vlad and an ace next year and are basically playing for 2026 at this point.
This dude really HATES the Mets young prospects… dam… Let them play… Vientos, Alvarez and Nimmo all played and got better with playing time. Jesus… i’d rather pay for premium free agent, than trade our high end and cheap prospects for players.
If you’re talking about stearns he doesn’t hate playing prospects look at examples of his previous job where they had to plug young guys in Milwaukee the thing is you don’t wanna push guys who aren’t ready a few of the Mets prospects last year where injured most of last season and they had to get reps in the fall league you also don’t wanna activate there service time yet only prospects I see playing this year would be drew and sproat
@christophercancel934 Curbin Burnes is 2 years younger than Castillo might as well give Burnes a 7 year deal with a high av. I don't trust Stearns with these pitching projects. Cohen need to step in and get Burnes
Well, the Mariners have one of, if not the best, rotations in baseball so being the third best pitcher in that group doesn’t mean he’s not an ace-caliber pitcher. And I could definitely see the Mets in on Burnes if he settles for a short, high AAV type deal. Otherwise they’ll look elsewhere.

In a trade for Castillo, you could include McNeil and just eat half his bloated salary to make it appealing. I think Marte could fall in the same category as well, but you would also have to eat half of his salary. Marte would make a great DH or platoon guy in the outfield for a team lacking, good outfielders. McNeil would be a good utility guy, given all the different positions he can play. If a team has a terrible 2B, they could even use McNeil as a replacement and hope he has a good season or two left in him. I know, wishful thinking, but I am pretty sure Seattle doesn’t have a solid starting 2B, so it’s not that far-fetched. lol. I understand that whatever they have right now has to be super terrible to even consider taking McNeil, but from what I heard, Seattle is just that and has no 2B. McNeil has been god-awful the last few years with zero power and now he’s not even connecting anymore and he’s also a head case with anger issues, making him completely useless for the Mets. I understand neither of those guys is good enough to get Castillo on their own, but if you include one or both of them in a deal as the icing on the cake coupled with one or two solid prospects, it could work. We could use Winker or Iglesias for the DH or put Iglesias at 2B and finally getting rid of McNeil seems like a possibility. The problem with this is you’re literally going to have to pay another team to take both, McNeil and Marte. Lol. But Cohen is super wealthy and probably has no problem eating some payroll to win.
I had mentioned this once before I am all in as well as all for trading for Luis Castillo but, I am not including Luis Angel acuna Jr in that trade. I will trade any other rookie but not Luis acuna jr
