Was in a brick & mortar sporting goods store the other day, and all but two of their Mets replica jerseys were Alonso. Not the reason you sign any player, but Pete is both beloved and highly marketable. He’s our HR smashing goober!

It’s a slow developing market. Stearns isn’t the kind of guy to panic and overpay. It’s clear that Alonso isn’t worth what he thinks he’s worth. His price will come down eventually.

I haven’t forgotten about Mauricio, unless he lost his skills since the injury. If they give him a chance to play 3B, he’d probably stick there. We always hear about teams wanting to get younger and more athletic, yet rarely put them to the test at the big league level. Switch hitter too, he can help big time.

Jordan Montgomery's numbers the past three years have been solid. I really believe that 2024 was an outlier. If the Mets take on his salary, they wouldn't have to give up too much talent. A trade for Castillo will cost you three top prospects.

Hi Ryan, Pete is our homegrown guy in the organization. I bet he has a good relationship with everyone in the clubhouse, he isn't a distraction and there isn't anyone on the market that's better even though the prices are high. The only thing I see is they are possibly looking at Vladimir to replace him next year. Now the problem could be Pete is being difficult in the negotiations and not agreeing with the terms that's allowing the Mets other options if available because Pete's market hasn't stirred a lot of attention.

I hate saying this. But, if Vientos can play league average defense at 1st and replicate last season at the plate, Bregman is a 2 for 1. He’ll solidify 3rd, we’ll solve 1st and platoon and give guys rest at DH. It’s a gamble because we don’t know if Vientos can do this for a season. Alonso waiting also hamstrings us from rounding out the team. If the Mets sign Bregman soon, they can focus on Pitching, BP, and platoon depth. And then this team is complete heading into next season.

    • @Mitchropolitan
      @Mitchropolitan วันที่ผ่านมา

I absolutely disagree emphatically! I can’t believe we’re trying to have a debate about this. Pete Alonso is much better 1st baseman than he’s perceived as he saved some bad throws with his ability to scoop including some from even Lindor. Pete’s a homegrown player. Much higher ceiling with RUN PRODUCTION. Again since he entered the league nobody has hit more homers & RBIs except Aaron Judge in a MVP season who just leapfrogged over him.
He had nearly 35 HR, 90 RBIs this year on a BAD YEAR. Bregman is a lot closer to Brandon Nimmo with his bat with around 25 HR than Pete with the bat. He’s probably going to be at 40, 100 next year. You’re putting Vientos who has virtually no experience at 1B. He’s much more likely to close to average 3B. & more likely to be a liability at 1B.
Pete loves this team, passionate about this franchise is marketable. Pete’s not taking a discount. Pete is going to get 200-220 bc you’re not paying for a 1st baseman but the run production. If Pete actually hit with RISP this year, Pete would be getting 250 million, but his down year is better than 90% of players at the plate including bregman. Not, to mention you make the team significantly weaker with an inexperienced not that athletic player at 1st base who ñ nwill handle 60-80% of the plays in the field & you take away his strongest asset which is his arm.
So, get Pete back & I stand by my statement 7/220. That’s a bargain especially if he can actually have someone like vientos to PROTECT him he may actually get some balls to hit over the plate & he gets back to being a more disciplined hitter. Bregmam has so much more wear & tear & is closer to 25 than 30 & he’s about League average despite the defensively over his career. Sign a defensive a defensive 3B & vientos can split his time at 3B/DH. This is a no brainer & the Mets better grab Pete before another team does, imho

I’m more in on Alonso than I am Guerrero let alone Bregman. I see Bregman as a 3b constipation that takes at bats from every high ceiling position prospect that we have. (In one way or another.) Bregman is not NY battle tested. I can’t even let myself celebrate Soto until I know we keep Alonso. Jet or Acuna or Gilbert will be the future of CF and or 2b. The remainder’s can get traded for pitching. Either now or at TDL. If we have to start the season waiting for Sproat and/or Blade and/or Tong.

What the heck is the hold up of signing this guy. Give him a five-year contract and be done with it sure he may start to decline year 3 But that’s one of the reasons we have the designated hitter that was the original purpose of it to keep guys around longer and get them more productive. Another thought: you sign free agents to fill positions that you can't fill internally. Mauricio did enough in his time in the Majors prior to the injury to suggest he could probably hit .270 with 20 homers, and that is all you are going to get out of Bregman. Why would you spend $30 mil. AAV to get roughly the same production Mauricio could give you for minimum wage?

    • @fr2ncm9

I'm open to trading Gilbert and Clifford, but I'd hold onto Acunua, Mauricio and Baty, Acunua's defensive skills are outstanding. In the event that you lose Lindor, Acunua will give you near the same level of defense. Mauricio is still a bit of an unknown quantity because he only played 26 games in the majors, but,. he has good power and speed. As for Baty, his bat-to-ball skills are outstanding. That was the reason why the Mets chose him with the 12th pick in the draft. He is a career 283 hitter in the minors, and he has shown the ability to hit major league pitching. 276 BA on the road in 2024. He's a solid defensive player and has the potential to hit 25 or more homers per season.

They are both demanding far far more than they are worth, so hard pass on both of them. They are both living off their fantastic numbers from the "rabbit ball" years, when everybody was hitting at least 30 homers. Take away the rabbit ball years and Bregman is consistently .270 b.a. with 20 homers -- something you might get out of a minor leaguer for minimum wage (albeit not as good a fielder). Leave out the rabbit ball years, and Alonso is a one-dimensional home run hitter in the 30s or 40s. He's just a little bit better than Schwarber, who signed for $22 mil AAV. Both of these guys want Aaron Judge kind of contracts. Neither of them can lace Aaron Judge's shoes. If some foolish owner wants to give the Aaron Judge kind of contracts, let him; never prevent your rival from making a fatal mistake.

Too many people are sentimental. Who cares if Alonso is homegrown. We want a Title. $ per production to get there. I hope we sign neither of Alonso or Bregman. Mauricio at 3B. Vientos at 1B. If we can trade for Vlad without selling farm, do it now. Or we wait until next year to sign him. Put rest of willing to spend $ into pitching.

Ryan, I don’t think this is a choice between Bregman and Alonso, but rather on what the plan is if the Mets get Bregman. Bregman is a more definitely sound 3B, which is a big Stearns check mark. I have a feeling Stearns like Pete but when you have Vladdy coming into the market at 26, it might make sense to stop gap first for 1 year (maybe that’s Vientos, maybe not). I trust the plan, no matter what it is

Tell me Ryan, how the defense compare. Pete Alonso is not even tops in his own damn division. Much less the NL. This is easy, sign Bregman and put the pressure on Pete to come back at the Mets price. There are plenty of ways to go with First base, Bregman is by far the best third basemen on the market and has WS pedigree. Him and Soto would be the only ones. I want both but Bregman for those reasons to me is the must sign first. Mets don't bet against yourselves for Pete, what is his market, who else is knocking down his door right now

Pete Alonso doesn't have much of a market right now. I don't expect him to get more than 170 million. If we can get him on a 5-year deal with deferments, I'm ok with that. I don't think that Alonso is going to age well.
