I met Victor Fritzche in Montreux back in 1987, he was a guest of honor at the Festival of Jazz and we kind of stumbled on one another in a coffee shop. I expressed my admiration for his work on Gato and we had a nice chat about it. He recalled the days spent working with David in a stuffy Sheffield studio and how seamless the recording process went for most of the album. According to him, the synth progression for Werewolf with Pants was massively inspired by the popping exhaust of a Triumph automobile that was passing by their avenue during lunch. David got obsessed with the weird cadence of it and spent a solid hour riffing until it became the synth bass line. He said it's the one thing he remembers the most about working on that album, and he gets a kick out of telling people about it every time. Also, fun fact, he always subconsciously snaps his croissants in half. I asked him about it and he said he doesn't think about it, he just does it to make sure the croissant's not rotten like David's was way back then. We had a good laugh about that.
Ah I remember listening to Gato back in 1983... this was back when I was in college and the drinking age in Texas was still 18... they took that away from us the following year.... But I'm also rather thankful because I would have never entered the inescapable ketamine vortex with David Wojciechowski & Victor Fritzsche had I been drinking beer at the bars!! Really brings me back
if it was, i could imagine people saying what they do for most albums back then, you know, the whole "This was ahead of its time!!!" type stuff. (mind you, are they wrong?)
I showed this album to my parents and talked about the backstory in the description. They were nodding along and my mom correctly predicted the style was something from the late seventies. They completely believed it, and I don't blame them. It's extremely authentic to the point where you can just.. let yourself believe. Such a great piece of music. (Obviously I told them afterwards and we had a good laugh about it)
