Your videos are great. Very enlightening and informative. I am very impressed by your work. After doing a lot of research and partly from watching your videos, Ive seen how these are built. Since the aggravation seems inevitable, I decided to save myself a ton of money and just bought an older coach that already needs a roof. I am about to do a full tear down, repair and replace. Including new trusses and some skin. Wish me luck!

I appreciate these videos, I’m getting quite the education at same time getting sick to my stomach trying to figure out how to raise the money to repair my 2006 Outback travel trailer that had a small roof leak. After watching videos like these I’m sure I will need a new roof and partial sidewall, possible front wall, was just quoted 10-15 thousand :( and I’m still paying on it, smh. (Divorce sucks!) I know it’s mostly labor which after watching these videos I completely understand. You guys did a beautiful job on this repair. I’m jealous lol. When I’m able to do the repair I will be better educated on what do and what products to use vs just taking their word for it. Thanks again. Really informative. I’ll continue to watch.

@@sparkywow1 I lucked out, my son in law took pity on me and offered to do the work replaced the interior bedroom walls, resealed the trim on the roof, used peel n stick wallpaper, which looked great and I made the decision to sell it and it sold in less than 24 hours with over 500 views! It’s a hot market for RV’s right now. So less than 500.00 in materials, and I gave him 1000.00 for labor and still made a profit. thank God for my son in law.

(2015 Keystone Cougar 1/2 ton Fifth Wheel - Purchased New)
A raven pecked away at the Dicor sealing the skylight above the shower, but I didn't notice it till the water was already dripping from the ceiling panel trim 3 panel joints back. The back wall is delaminated as well. I work for an architect and am very familiar with detailing roof curbs for commercial buildings. I will be replacing my roof membrane with the same upgrade you installed for this project. This video is truly GOLD for RV owners, THANKS! One more thing, Hydrogen Peroxide will kill black mold. Mix one quart with 2 gallons of water and use a weed sprayer to apply.

REALLY great videos, makes me very scared for the 2020 Jayco Melbourne I just bought... after watching a bunch of these seems like it is only a matter of time. Tremendous craftmanship shown in these videos. I hope I am never a customer, but if I am it looks like the fix will be done better than new! wish me luck. :(
Honestly, I would just take it to him right now. Or set an appointment. That's a good chunk of money to not be perfect. And It doesn't take long before they leak if not already..... Most all of them have an issue with the roof before they even leave the lot. Nobody will notice, until the damage is done. Now would be so much cheaper than later. Just my opinion, as hard as that may be to hear.

All that rot in just three years…..crazy! Now I’m nervous of what I’m going to find under my 2011 Tiffin Allegro. Several soft spots and some leaking windows.
Why don’t manufacturers offer this type of a roofing system as an option to upgrade? With campers being notorious for leaks I would gladly pay extra to know it was done right.

I think it would help your viewers if you would give us a tally of things. Man hours, recommended roof sealants to use. Time this rig spent at the shop, was this an insurance job. Type of screws to use, trim type you use. Your work is outstanding!
These videos are really not DIY videos. They are out together for the customer. That's one if the reasons there are no ads. We don't make a dime off the videos, we are not trying to be TH-cam stars...lol. all the info you suggest would really take more time to add than we have. We simply video, pull the clips and post. Very little editing. Again that's why we don't have a fancy intro.

Jayco is not the problem.Maintenance is. Early on the roof should have been at least annually inspected and preventive Eternabond sealant tape put on all the roof seams - edges, around all openings. This could be followed up by painting a RV rubber roof sealant as well. Any roof will leak with age and lack of maintenance. NOT a Jayco problem, they are very well built.
Yes maintenance is required, although we would not endorse any rubber coating. Coatings don't work on campers and RVs. We've showed this time and time again.
Sealing the windows, doors ,latches, light ,etc is a must.

Depends...mainly we use 3m94 but if your not applying it correctly it will eat the foam. If glueing to luan it'll be fine. Expensive... but it works. Thanks for watching!

It boggle my mind how the manufacturers still get away with such shoddy work/craftsmanship. I'll NEVER buy a new unit because of it. You buy a new car for $40,000 and you can reasonable expect 10+ yrs with little maintenance. (20+ years with a little more maintenance) Buy a $40,000 trailer and be happy you get 3-5yrs before it needs a $12,000 repair job. How do they justify that much anyways?! It's not like there is any R&D into these things. They've just copied the designs over the years. No engine or other complicated mechanical parts... and they build it with the cheapest parts available. Sorry, for the new buyers, but thanks for the secondhand units! Thanks for the video. Even if you got a new camper.... It would be coming through this shop for a roof. The roofs on the new ones are no good. Get em built, get em out, get em sold is their motto.

Great video. Lots of insight into what lies beneath. But it begs the question what does a job like this cost? I can't even ballpark it. Anybody have an idea?
How do the interior garnishes look when you raise up the vents and AC? Are the bolts long enough to tighten the AC gasket to the curb?
Good questions. We use taller garnishments to cover any framing. The vents look like they do now..or did. We also use longer bolts for the AC.

Thank you so much for the videos you do, I’ve learned so much about RV construction from you. One thing I would like to mention is RVs need to be stored with some kind of cover. The climate and weather (expanding and contracting) can cause leaks. If the unit is stored in the open, the leak can go unchecked for several months. I had a shed built for mine before I purchase it.
@@gregwalker731 good advise. Our roofs are all commercial, that being said, you don't see commercial buildings with covers. But every bit is of extra cover us definitely a plus.

RV ROOF INSTALL your right, your roof wouldn’t need a cover. I was speaking of the factory RV roof. I don’t trust them and keep my unit covered.
Super easy trailer rot repair hack:
1) go to gas station
2) buy appx. 300 gals. of gasoline
3) pour gasoline into trailer
4) light a book of matches, throw into trailer
5) collect insurance check
DONE!
Since you don't like dicor etc. , What sealants do you recommend to prevent leaks to roof , vents , fans , and RV sides , I don't like the dicor either just want something to work and last a while , enjoyed the video , lets me know how things are actually made , of which inturn I can try to protect my investment.

Own a 2004 Jayco Designer and my roof plywood is delaminating and I want to replace rubber roof with T P O roofing. No leaks just spongy. I hate rubber roofs. My question is: in the video it appears that you only glue the deck not the new material. When I installed it on my other RV they recommended glue both surfaces.If you can only do1 surface this would be GREAT !!!!

Could you tell me where I can get the roof trim that protects better please. I was going to fill the track up with silicone but you mentioned a style trim that did a better job. Thanks. Great video. Such a shame Jayco has such poor quality control.
First you need to measure the track. You can do a search online for ...vinyl insert trim. AP products makes insert trim as well. Johnson surplus supply. A marine supply place may have some as well We special order the insert we use. We had to buy 10,000 feet of it. You should back the screws out and get a dob of caulk behind the screw heads-up anyway

What kind of insulation did you use on the exterior walls that have a silver surface.
Thats easy..they used fibre glass wool attached to an aluminized paper backing, same as what you would use for a house , from big box stores .
I’ll find the best mole killer by far is RMR 86 mold and stain remover. It literally disappears in front your eyes.

RMR 86 is sodium chlorite... essentially bleach. Bleach will kill mold on non porous surface such as countertops and shower walls...even on painted wood. However bleach does not have the need amount of surfactant to penetrate deep into the pores of wood or drywall. Concrobium is chemically designed to sleep and suficate the mold spores by shrinking the pores... essentially squeezing...so the pores die. Bleach by a other name would be .... whitener. It will whiten or discolor the mold on porous surfaces but won't reach deep enough to the root.
I do a lot of research on the products, their intended use design and limitation to make sure we have the right product for the entailed project and elements the project will undergo.

So I have a personal coach class c, yes the front bunk is “rottted” and in the rear room the roof is also “rottted” to the point that it’s about a whole panel sagging down from the ceiling. So since I’m planning on doing all the work myself where should I start? Fix the walls and ceiling or do the roof then ceiling and walls? Thanks love the videos!
I would open up as much as I could to get things to dry out. Tear the roof off. Get the fiberglass off or loose enough to get air in to dry and mold kill. While all that is drying you can rebuild the bunk

VERY impressive video! Thank you! I bought a 2006 Jayco 29BHS trailer with known roof issues a couple of months ago. I'm a retired contractor and pretty handy so I figured for the price I paid I can fix the roof. Although you said this isn't a DIY video I want to thank you so much for the detailed images and verbal descriptions of the construction of these trailers. Looks like I have a project ahead! Was a little surprised at your comments re; Dicor. RV forums seem to have a high opinion of Dicor and I used a tube of their caulk to seal obvious leaks as a temporary measure. It worked well. Can you recommend better sealants? Can TPO be pieced in, ie; do 1/4 of the roof with new? Most of my roof seems sound. Hah!
I bought a 19 foot trailer with a known water issue years ago. I stopped the leaks but need to fix similar issues to what’s shown in the video. I’m thinking of doing all the wood and insulation repair and then bring it to have the pros put the roof membrane on. The main reason we bought it was to live in it for a summer as we built a place.

That's an old coach. Watch the videos we have on ultra lite or super lite...can't remember the title...but I go over how to do a preliminary inspection. Beware that class c bunks are known to leak and rot. We have done a slew of them.
Dx-946-1w is the white we use. So products has some as well.

I’ve been watching a lot of repair videos lately and not sure if I would buy new.
They depreciate worse than a car, build quality is getting worse. I don't own one. We get some that customers are selling from time to time...we pass them along. We have a class C and a bumper pull 30 ft both with new roofs.
i wish i have watched your video before buying a jayco, i just bought a used one and worried that i might get a lot of work and money to keep it running. I do have a question: how do i know if my RV was leaking or about to leak? appreciate it, I did not see anything unusual, and surely did not clearly see in this RV but as soon as you open the roof, it is trouble! Do you have service in WA?
No we do not service in WA. This is our only shop. Inspect the caulk thoroughly. Use a butter knife to go around the caulk edges to see if it's loose. If there are any cavities in the caulk they need to be sealed. Inspect the boot on the crank up antenna. Inspect the caulk on top of the gutter rail. Inspect all windows, doors, latches, lights and handles to make sure they are sealed. Inspect the plumbing base. If you have the one that has the 3 legs look inside to see if it is sealed under the leg on the inside of the cap. Don't wait to see stains on the ceiling. Once that happens you have bigger problems. When the roof leaks the deck and framing absorb the water....then the insulation and when it reaches the ceiling that panel will absorb what it can before it finally comes through. So really once you notice a ceiling leak everything above it is soaked and probably rotted. It will never dry out unless it gets opened up. I've had coaches in my bay for a few months before we could get to them and they were still wet when we opened them up. Chemlink makes product called Duralink 50. You could try that instead of the crappy Dicor. It may be compatible but I have never gone over Dicor with it to test it.

@@twheeler7747 Dicor is made by Carlisle Syntec...they manufacturer commercial roofs, however Dicor just wants the low budget stuff. Carlisle make a commercial grade lap sealant. You could get some Big Stretch and try it. It's water based, easy clean up. Just try one vent and check it in a couple few weeks to see how it does. We don't reseal those roofs at all. I have had good luck with the big stretch in other applications. It may not be Dicor. Some sealants have silicone in the and if yours does nothing will stick to it. Even silicone doesn't stick to silicone. There are a few variable and that's why we shy away from recommending product because if they don't perform you'd be upset with us. Those are a couple if you want to try them.

Yoú can sand it óff if your careful. Any hígh strength contact adhesive should hold it back on. Read adhesive container. Thanks for watching.

What do you suggest is the best alternative for using decor to re seal seams ?
Dicor is made by Carlisle Syntex. Carlisle makes a commercial lap sealant. But any commercial grade lap sealant should work. Dicor is loaded with petroleum distillate that cause it not to stick. They admit there is distillates on their site, but they claim the distillate will evaporate off. Petroleum distillate is the slickness you feel when you have gas or diesel on your fingers.
There also isn't any properties in the Dicor that I could find, that thwarts UV light. So essentially sun's UV rays cause the product to dry out prematurely causing cracks that open up. A quality caulk shouldn't need reapplication every few months. It's Doctor's cash cow!
Do you have a good video for repairing or replacing RV ceiling that delaminates. It's 15 years old. No water stains, but delaminted.
Ceiling panels come out from the roof side. That's the easiest way we do them.
Do you have to remove deck and joist to install ceiling panels?
The ceiling panels cit kn the wall and the cabinets. We replace ceiling panels from the top, removing the trusses. If you opt to try to do it from inside you would ha e to cut around the edge of the wall and cabinets and your new piece is going to have to be exact or your going to need to install some molding. The molding won't match, and you'd be forced to do the entire coach to make it look proper. Also. Why would you need to replace the ceiling panel? Must've gotten wet. If that's the case, you need to check the framing and roof deck for damage. If it's wet, it needs to be opened up and blown dry fans. It will never dry out unless you open it up. Trapped moisture can breed mold. Once opened, it needs to be sprayed with kold kill. So, to answer your question, the proper way would be from the roof to replace the ceiling.

What roof caulking would you recommend? I'm doing several repairs to an older carson fun runner and was going to use dicor but after seeing this I'll look for something else.

Wow! I have a 2013 Sierra Travel trailer. I was lucky that they took a measure of pride building it. That's not saying it had no problems. I have found a good amount of issues due to them using cheap material and incorrect materials. Fortunately my floor is real plywood, not sure how that happened, probably all they had that day. Some other incomplete stuff I found such as missing floor joist and I believe they failed to finish the duct work in the ceiling the same as your video. My back wall needs rebuilt and I would like to have a new membrane. Aluminum frame in walls, except the rear. Very little defamation existing, only around the water heater, which has leak has been resolved. How can I reach you?

What did you use for mold killer. Just keep reading people saying bleach or vinegar. Are the branded products any better?
We use mold control with consortium available at Home Depot. Look up concrobium. I know there are a lot of concoctions, but from what I have learned about concrobium, it seems to be the best solution.

Yes we have done numerous class A roofs. We don't go back with fiberglass. We use the same commercial grade 60 mil thick TPO.

I've worked in construction for about 22 yrs doing kitchen and bathroom remodels. Is this something u would recommend to have professionally done or could someone with a little construction experience and common sense could handle?
There is a lot...and I mean a lot, of detail to pay attention to. I would not recommend someone try to tackle an RV, that said, these RV centers and shops I see shouldn't be doing them either. Ask anyone the number 1 issue with their camper and I'll bet it's roof leaks, despite being repaired or replaced. They are also time-consuming. You would need to have scaffolding to do the job properly. You'll wear your ass out.climbing up and down a ladder all day, trying to hold tools, walking across a plank without rails and bouncy.
That's my advice. I'm a GC by trade, and I have installed a restaurant roof quicker than some RVs.

@@frankkernan751 Mr. Frank we used to do commercial roofs and commercial coating. The Rv armor is only a coating. If it was worth installing wewould buy the machine, they are always looking for installers. Some of the reasons we do not endorse the system is because 1. it will not elevate the vents and AC like they should e done. 2. What is the roof deck like on your coach? You never now until you get the roofing off. We did a hideout 5th wheel that had a minor antenna leak and if we did not remove the roofing we would never have seen it. The water was still pooling on the top side of the ceiling. Had we not investigated and roofed it the water surely would have soaked through and the customer would be adamant there was a leak. We wouldn't repair as in patch it. We would put a new roof in it. Depending on the year it may or may not be worth it to you. Roofs are literally the most expensive replacement on any RV, camper, coach. The sad part is that even the new ones leak and if they don't right out the gate they will very shortly, despite the claim of a 10 or 29 year roof the salesman will tell you.

@@fredypabon8171 I can't recommend anyone because no one does our roofs except us. I designed them. But you have some structural issues that need to be addressed. I think you have a plyfoam roof if I remember right. Take the square plastic piece off the ceiling in the roof vent. Look inside and you may see white foam and not regular batten insulation. If you do have the foam you need to re-adhefe it all back.
Do you know of anyone in California who does as good work as well as you?
We are the only company that installs these roofs anywhere. We designed them and have yet to train another shop. We are looking into training other shops.

Use some metal roof screws in there determinate are you getting the trim and you don’t even have to use that rubber in their seven years

If you only knew how many folks I've said that very same thing...lol. sometimes , if your a camper person, it's better to fix than replace because the next one will need a roof as well.

I’d put fire stop foam around all those wires coming to the roof. I’m watching this because I have a 19’ where it leaked to the floor so a whole front corner needs rebuilding. I’d like to know what all this work costs to see if it worth having the work done. I can see to do it right scaffolding needs to used.
We don't quote on social media, but if you give us a call we can try to get some rough numbers to you. We wouldn't know the extent of the damage until we tear it apart and see how far back it goes...what all needs to come out etc.

Why would you need fire caulk? That's only used in firewalls, chimneys and stove pipes to prevent a the fire spread, or retard a flame.

@@RVROOFINSTALL I would use fire seal spray foam that would prevent the wires from chafing. It also prevents moisture coming into the roof cavity. I have built a few homes and do this for energy conservation as wire holes in walls make a chimney for convection.
@@Chris_at_Home I'm a GC myself. It's expensive and unless someone asks for specifically we will use rigid foam or batten. Whichever we can get nowadays.

Expensive....very expensive. Plyfoam is a design if the roof...just winging it with spray foam is not. Lol it's to consider spraying over that you may need access to later. Then the clean up...not worth spray foaming a camper.

Woo I'm dreading the up coming work for my 01 keystone tailgator 210rr the escape window leaks , the roof leaks in the shower and the paneling is not in good shape. And I cracked the tub a few weeks ago when I dropped the shampoo. The door frame leaks. I'm expecting it to cost at least $2k and that's for me to do it myself. I think I'm going to have to hire someone smaller than myself to help with the roof since I'm 6'7" 320#

If you are referring to a camper RV....they are all the same... literally. Take the decals off and you wouldn't know who is who. Even the construction is the same.

No....it's all TPO. All welded together, not glued. Then welded to the main roof sheet membrane.

@@tomcat5986 eternabond is a brand of roof tape. TPO is a form of roofing membrane, just like PVC or EPDM (rubber). TPO and PVC are weldable. EPDM rubber is not. All are typically glued down. EPDM thinks and us unstructured. Structured membrane has a weave or mesh in the center to add strength to resist branches and hail. EPDM is what I consider a low budget membrane. It literally is the cheapest product on the planet. Most architects will specify EPDM because it is cheap but the fail quickly at protrusions and in bigger projects the lap joints will fail because they are merely glued.

Dicor= dollar tree caulking. Lasts longer, and much cheaper to redo. You're supposed to reseal ANNUALLY anyhow. What I used when I replaced the door lock as well as when the entryway door glass decided to dislodge from the plastic trim. Sealed her right up and no more glass falling into the doorframe issues.
I bought a Jayco new from Camping World. They hooked it up. We took it home. Next time we hooked it up the connector wouldn't plug into my truck. Took it in under warranty and they wouldn't honor it. They said the connection on the trailer was likely tampered with. I will never purchase another Jayco or do business with Camping World.
We had the problem on a new Ford. Lights worked in my old Chevy... customer's older Chevy. He bought a brand new Ford and the lights wouldn't work. Called a trailer and aftermarket company and he said the new trucks need to be flashes or programed for the trailer. That's may be what's wrong with yours. Unless you got it figured out.
