      Technically, the entire video is a commercial, but at least it’s useful and not just a bunch of BS. Now if Josh started towing trailers on the beach like the old car commercials, then I would say he has “jumped the shark”. Maybe it would work for shark week though???

I had wood on my keystone sprinter and the roof wasnt walkable but it never leaked and my husband weight like 160 and he did walk on the beams to check and wash it once a month and get the snow off it in the winter. I like the wood because it didn’t leak it was all wood with metal siding the paint looked new at 14 years old.

    • @duffb
      @duffb 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm getting ready to install solar panels on my Minnie 2106FBS. I used an electronic stud finder to get the layout and it shows the trusses are 3" in width. This helps me know what I would be screwing into. Are the trusses 3" tubular aluminum or is there something between the tube and the deck that would be 3" wide? @@JoshtheRVNerd

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@duffb They're actually a galvanized stamped steel i-beam style truss. Historically Winnebago HAD used tubular aluminum structure in the roofing, but swapped to the stamped steel a few seasons ago.
      Winnebago along with many other brands will often still refer to their RVs as "All Aluminum skeletons" simply to indicate it's a non-wood skeleton RV. Stamped steel trusses are actually more expensive and beneficial vs. tubular aluminum, so referring to something as "All aluminum skeleton" isn't actually an upsell, but a short-sell of the product's true benefits.

    • @duffb
      @duffb 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshtheRVNerd Thanks for the info. I mapped them out with a stud finder to install solar panels and it shows them to be 3" wide. I'm still wondering what the profile against the deck I would be screwing into looks like, mainly if there is a gap in the middle or if that 3" is all solid, metal or something a screw will hold to. I beam would make me think it's probably 3" sheet metal.

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@duffb The truss as described in my previous reply provides a larger anchor point than the galvanized sheets used in sidewalls to act as anchors for cabinets. Be careful not to go nuts using something like 4" screws, though, as you could run the risk of hitting wiring that runs thru the looms.

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vast majority of heat/cooling loss is thru the roof/floor similar to the largest areas of human heat loss are your head and feet
      The walls have far less impact. There's also nearly no insulation variance between a 1.5" wall and 2" wall (and no discernible difference in structure)

    Years late, but if you see this, Josh, I'd love to know: why aren't the tubes in tubular aluminum roof trusses filled with insulation?
    Is it not technically feasible? Is it too expensive to justify replacing the air, static air being a fairly decent insulator itself? Or does the extensive heat bridging by the aluminum just defeat the purpose of any kind of added insulation? ...Or something else?

      Rockwood uses a laminated Roof. Laminated roofing does not have periodic cross members like a constructed roof. So no, it does not have 16" on center studs. They have cross members as required -- such as by the air conditioner to support extra weight and a full aluminum perimeter.

Wonder if you could make a few short comments or give leads on what do do with resealing epdm roofs. I was going to go with a silicone roof paint, but I'm having 2nd thoughts and I'm wondering if something like Liquid Roof or similar product available in stores might be a better way to go? I have already used some silicone seam sealant, which I gather may not stick to anything other than silicone - but I might be able to cut or ply it off if necessary, given my application technique weaknesses. If within scope, any tips appreciated on reconditioning an RV roof and in the case of a used RV, what to look for and ramifications. Thanks.

    • @JoshtheRVNerd

      I'm sure it varies greatly by brand. Most of those feature laminated roofing. When you laminate studs tend to spread much further how by design. I typically don't see them more than 4ft on center. I could imagine brands in that class adding more of course.

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All Apex models use a laminated roof. It's not THE MOST walkable in terms of load ratings, but there's no reason one adult can't get up there and do seasonal upkeep.
      Interestingly, the Nanos with a non-centralized A/C unit actually have a little superior walkability since they do not have the A/C channels cut thru the roofing. On an Apex with central air it's best if you either walk right in the middle or along the edges (with caution of course)

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The biggest thing a full paint package does for you is cosmetic. They usually look "better." There are other benefits however.
      Full paint will eliminate nearly all exterior decals, so peeling/flaking is simply no longer a thing. The nature of the paint will generally provide superior resistance to things like sun fading. It often wraps a few inches over the roof line which can help protect things like the perimeter seals for a longer period before a full peel and reseal is required.
      But... they're also INCREDIBLY expensive to apply to an RV. And, God forbid you ever need any sort of body work getting a touch up paint to match the original will never be perfect due to things like sun exposure -- even if you have the original paint codes.
      So, "is it worth the price?"
      Well... that's for YOU to decide.

    Hello! Great video. I have a question for you, I own a 2017 Kodiak 223RBSL Ultra Lite travel trailer, I am installing the glass solar panels on the roof. I’ve reached out to Dutchman to see if I can get a roof plan for the support locations. I was told they don’t have one. Do you know what type of struts are used in this trailer? Also, I’ve used several types of stud finders with no success. How do you suggest I go about finding the roof supports? I greatly appreciate any advice you can offer!

      @JoshtheRVNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Quick note: Since I'm not a Kodiak dealer I"m not 100% familiar with their exact construction. However, Kodiak is a "cousin" to the Passports we carried here for years. For years Passport used a galvanized stamped steel roof truss that may not be "playing nice" with your stud finder.
      Some Kodiaks have also had laminated roofing over the years. You may find it has aluminum framework located ever 48" or so on center
      *Also, did you properly calibrate the stud finder by first holding it up to your chest and going "Yup. There's one." before using it? This is of critical import when using that particular piece of equipment.*

    Another informative video Josh, thank you for all your hard work. When thinking about what 5th wheel to purchase, I'm beginning to believe that having thicker walls like 3 1/4 in. wall may not be worth the extra money it costs to get that better insulation due to the two main ways you lose heat, through the roof and windows. Having never owned a 5th wheel, does it make a huge difference in keeping a particular temp, moving from a 2" wall to a 3" wall?????

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you have mentioned the main heat/cooling loss point are roof/floor/windows. I do not believe an extra super duper thick wall makes any significant or functional difference.
      In the case of something like an open range 3x what the 3" wall is doing is adding an extra inch of bead foam on top of the aluminum skeleton so you don't see those condensation lines outlining the skeleton of the RV in the morning.

      *TECHNICALLY* yes, but not in the way you'd think. All Open Range towable RVs now use a laminated floor with crossmembers set every 24" to maintain a strong structure. The top of their floor is a dual layer offset luaun.
