RV Roof Damage easy repair, good thing we went on the roof and noticed a soft spot, the leak came from a 10-inch length sealant on the edge of the gutter, so what was not falling in the gutter was seeping through that small hairline stress on that sealant.

I would recommend this glue. this was not available when this video was created. amzn.to/3Mcm9HZ
So you don’t recommend using the flex seal glue you used? I just have two rear corners and don’t need a gallon of recPro adhesive
I'm very impressed by your diagnostic and remediation skills...I quite agree with you that there's nothing too complicated in most RV construction systems and really what you need to bring to the party is some confidence and a willingness to repair it better than it was constructed in the first instance. Well played sir!
Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it!
Funny i have the exact same camper and same year, with same leak. I have to do my repair now. Thanks for the video. Will be a lot cheaper than a full replacement or armor roof.
We love Eternabond! We just had a leak come through a light fixture in a fifth wheel that we just bought… your video makes me feel confident that my hubby and I can fix this! We didn’t want to rip up the roof but if we did go that route, I feel better seeing your video on it.
We Eternabond taped our motorhome two years ago and haven’t had any issue at all with the roof! Really hoping this fifth wheel will be an easy fix. No better way for the universe to congratulate us on the new rig than for it to have a leak as we move in 😂
Thank you for sharing!!
You've just convinced me to eternabond my roof asap! Great info on the repair though. Well done!
I just had a tree fall and hit my roof.. now I got a dent about 6 inches in circumference up there and it also cracked the inside ceiling panel and it's drooping a few inches.. thanks for the video... maybe I can cut around that dent and replace that wood also...😊
Great video I had to save this one to my playlist.
It's definitely scary cutting into your roof like that. But you made it sound very reasonable. And you're fix what's on par thank you for the great video
Thanks for this video… we just noticed a leak and a soft spot in our bunkhouse … I’m new rv owner with my first used RV and this is what I am
Faced with and the season hasn’t even begun. I feel confident my husband ( carpenter) will have no issues repairing
I just Eternabond taped my front/rear caps and around all of the skylights, fan, and vents. I noticed a soft spot like yours near the side edge because the membrane had 4 small pinholes that was letting water in. Glad I found your video because I have to do the same thing to repair that soft spot. I may replace a 4 foot section like you did to span the "rafters". Thanks for showing me what I can expect as I tear into it. I will then finish up the roof by taping both sides with 4 inch Eternabond tape.
Thank you so much for sharing. We are thinking about buying a rv and we know it has a leak and want to know how it would be to fix it and this helped with our decision.
Thanks, I have a similar issue I need to tackle around my TV antenna that I just found the other day. This is basically how I envisioned doing it.
A coat of Henry’s 100% white silicone and will last forever…good job btw.
Great video sir! I have used lap sealant yearly but just ordered Eternabond as extra insurance. Question: are not all RV rooves pitched so as the water flows down to the gutter from the center making the roof not actually flat? At least my TT Connect is built that way? Take away from your video is inspect...clean...inspect...clean. Thanks and great repair.
Thank you for taking the time and creating the video, this was super helpful. I now feel pretty confident to fix a small hole on the top of my RV roof.
Thanks for watching. Make sure you use rv roof glue. Good luck.
I would recommend using this glue this was not available when this video was created
amzn.to/3Mcm9HZ
@@TSquadRVing I was curious about the flex glue . Did it not hold up ?
Sorry to see this happen Angelo. It's unfortunate. From what I saw I don't think your leak was at the gutter. I think it was the vent itself but it's difficult to be sure watching a video. If you look at the pattern and the way the water radiated it appears to be focused at the vent. Also I saw no dicor around the one side of the vent and it should've been there, very heavy like the other items on the roof. With that said, the appropriate way to deal with the roof membrane is to remove the gutter from the back corner past the affected area. Then remove the rear trim from the corner, down a ways, maybe completely across. Those items actually hold the edges of the membrane in place. Then remove the vent and then pull up the membrane. This would've eliminated the need to cut it all up which is really try to avoid. At this point I'd recommend a new roof membrane be installed. Roof inspections should happen every 6 months. Why this happened to a 2 year old camper is unclear but I don't think it's any secret I'm not a fan of this company. I see far too many of you guys on TH-cam having problems with them that you shouldn't be having. Be careful about what sealants and adhesives you use on RV roofs. Certain products won't adhere properly. Silicon for instance is a major no no. Dicor self leveling is pretty decent and is widely used. On the edges you'll want a no sag sealant. Also any items installed on the roof should have a layer of butyl tape under them. The butyl will act as a gasket offering a second layer of protection in the event something makes it past the dicor. As always, you have my number if you want and advice.
As always. Thank You for this information. It helps this channel and our subscribers and viewers. So the leak was coming from the gutter edge, there was water damage on the wall part and where the vent was there was nothing. You may be right though. I’m still reading your comment though. Lol. Thanks again. I’ve pinned your comment for other to read.
I agree. The water was coming in from the roof vent. In my humble opinion.
I wouldn’t have put vent back in.I’d dicor all eternabond edges to seal it.Thas a recommendation from a pro.
What type of tape did you use . We have to fix a tear in our Rv roof .
Why flex seal is not a good option of tape
Great video on a nasty job! I also have a 2020 reflection and recently found some water in the bathroom area. Once on the roof I found I had stress cracks in my sunroof and soft areas around the sunroof. My job will be similar to yours, but I prefer not to do it myself unless I have to. Do you know if this kind of repair is covered by extended warranty? Thank you again for your awesome video and recommendations!
This was a great video. I found a soft spot on my roof yesterday. I was considering just repairing the pinhole I found on the membrane, now I just think its better to investigate and repair the soft part.
How old is your camper, very disappointing these things happen. Our local RV dealer, just increased their labor rate to $200/hour. I had an 18x 35’ building with 14’ high opening built to park my new camper under. I will also keep an eye on mine after seeing this. You need to be glad it didn’t damage the interior because that would be a nightmare. I also hope the arched too roof of my Jayco helps too. Companies should be ashamed this happens on a newer camper. Thanks for sharing
I just took our reflection 260 RD to the dealership, we purchased it in July of 21, it was built in may of 21, so after 2 years I found a soft spot between the front a/c and solar connector box, mind you I keep this unit under a carport, we have used it 6 times in two years, for a total of about 30 days out from the cover of the carport, I never found a bad place in the sealant, I check it at least once a month, before and after each trip, so grand design has approved a repair under warranty, I had already lined up a flex armor roof to be put on, if I don’t like their repair, I will take it and get it put on myself, for a price of 6000.
WOW, that's so sad! But thank You very much for sharing your steps, you made it look easy, but I know it wasn't! Thank you
Thank you for this vid. This gives me confidence to repair the roof of my 5th wheel. What thickness of plywood do they usually use on the roof?
Thank you for watching. I want say 7/16. I would take a piece a bring to match. It could be different for every manufacture. Thanks again.
Thank you for making this video. Really appreciate it.
Great video! It will help me out tremendously on my upcoming roof repair this weekend. Thank you!
I had to redo using this stuff. I would definitely recommend this. amzn.to/3Mcm9HZ
This is great! I know we are going to have to do this as well. Currently renovating an 86 Toyota odyssey on our channel. Thanks for sharing your journey, definitely saving us time and effort with research. Cheers!
Hey. Thanks for watching. I definitely will follow you on your journey to renovating your Toyota. Thanks for visiting.
Time to check mine. Thanks T. Nice job. And thanks Casey for the suggestions.
Hey Angelo, looks like you did a great job! I was wondering if you are worried about water going down that exterior part of the wall?!
We just bought a 2023 GD Imagine 22 MLE in November and got to use it after having it set on some friends open property. We found a leak in the bathroom coming from the roof. I crawled up on it and found a few splits in the rubber roof on the edge of the roof right above the gutter on the awning side. We took it in to the dealer knowing this is a factory defect. I hope the damage isn't like yours because we are camp hosting march first.
How did it turn out?
Good job, enjoy your camper!
Great Video! We bad a 3" diameter tree branch go through our Brand new 41' Forest River this season. Of course Insurance is giving us the run around. So I will be making repairs myself. My question is what thickness ant type of plywood you used? Again Great video. Thank you
Hello. I hear that a lot about warranties and insurance companies. It unfortunate they are like that. I believe RV roofs are made with 7/16. I wouldn’t out a piece and bring with you and get as close as you can.
Thanks so much for watching.
I think you may have just saved me thousands !!! Thanks for posting!
Looks like you did a good job on the repair. How's it holding up
It was holding up really good after I used the correct glue verse the caulk I used previously. I found another leak in a different area and decided to redo the entire roof with RV roof Armor. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for posting this video. I own a 2018 Forest River Sabre Cobalt. We discovered a 3" wide x 24" long soft spot at the hatch opening in the basement storage of our 5th wheel. Searched everywhere for a leak and couldn't find any. This was over a year ago. 3 weeks ago my adult son was poking around and alerted me to the fact that the soft spot had grown. Now about 10 inches wide. He climbed up on the roof and discovered a 2' x 2' soft spot in front of the forward ac unit. We pulled the ac unit and found that the vinyl roof was cut short during the manufacturing process. There was a area about 2 inches long that didn't quite fit over the lip of the opening. Although the flange on the ac covered it, apparently water was still getting in. Now I need to repair the roof and the floor. My biggest concern was how to seal the roof membrane. Now I know what to use. Thanks again.
Hello. Wow!!! Thanks for you message and watching our video. Well I’m glad your getting it fixed. Just be sure to use the correct glue I’ve posted in the links above. They didn’t have that glue at the time recording the video. Good luck. Share some before and after photos.
Damn, well done , thank you for this video, i hope i don't have this problem on my Reflection, again thanks!!
Good job ! Thanks for keeping it real
Thx for materials list
How is it holding up
I have the 2022 version of yours. During my early Spring examination I just found out mine is rippling on the sides. Corner crackes in the sealent. Called GD and I have to take it to the dealer so they can determine, if they are going to cover it. I am 2 days outside my warranty, but they said they will evaluate it. Dealer said "Dont touch it! Tarp it! and bring it in. I have a tub of the Alpha non-sag sealant, and want to fix the corners and seal the cracks. Then I can figure out how to tarp the whole RV. We live in it FullTime and are parked. I have not moved it since the dearler dropped it off and set it up here last February. While adding a small tarp for the back corners, I noticed my under belly was drooping. Took a couple screws out of the cardboard membrane and " Full of Water". I apparently also have a leak in my fresh water tank somewhere. To go along with the Hot Water heater, refrigerator door, and outside kitchen cabinet door, and all the propane recalls. Would you buy your RV again? I am wanning on Grand Design. Upset and confused on what to do next.
Wow!!! This was a tough read because I feel your pain and frustration. First I want to say I’m sorry you are going though this. I hear this story more then I want a lot. 2021-2022 were built during Covid with less care and monitoring going into these units. Although don’t know if that true, one thing I can say is most of these stories I hear from different makers are all consistent with the time frame. Your question “would I buy another Grand Design”. Yes I would. There’s more Pros then cons for me But……. Only because I can fix most of everything myself. Not everyone can do this and have depend on GD or the Dealer to come up with solutions and that can be painful. Especially if you live full time in your rig! As long as you have that membrane on your roof you will ALWAYs be prone to leaks. That’s why a few months ago we have had it with leaks and had our entire roof resealed (see video). If In the budget and you do live full time in your RV. I would consider doing that.
So Recalls are Recalls. They have to be addressed.
Fresh water tank leak can be just a broker seal.
Like I said I encourage you to watch that video. Please email me with updates at tsquadrving@gmail.com I would love to continue this conversation and answer any questions or may have.

@@TSquadRVing thank you sir. I prefer to fix things myself as well. I am not a professional like you, but dad taught all us boys to cowboy up, and handle your business if you can. If you cant ask for help expecting none, but be open to those that a re kind enoough to share their knowledge. You have, and I did most everthing you suggested. Will let GD make a decision only because I figure they owe me at least that for this 80K rig. I will endeed let you know how it goes. Do you have a video on your tow hitch. Thanks for posting. A lady wants me to repair her rv roof. This is very helpful! How has the repair and tape held up since you did the repair, all good?
Everything worked great until I decided to do the entire roof. Use this glue though.
amzn.to/3Mcm9HZ
@@TSquadRVingexcellent, thanks! 😊
Eternabond Tape do they last? What is the recommended replacement time? I am dealing with the same problem on my Lance TT. Thank you.
Fantastic and timely. I also have a foot square soft spot too, very similar to your location. As for the replacement board OSB or Zip, what thickness? Thank you
th-cam.com/video/JeJHDXFl4kQ/w-d-xo.html
I think I’m this video he mentions the thickness.
@@TSquadRVing I figure it out. I removed a vent and could see the thickness of the OSB.1/2".
Thank you please keep me updated
Looks like the slid topper is funneling water to the gutter, Also look at the screws in the gutter for rust my screws were rusted in 1/2 had to replace them with SS ones with caulk on the treads before proceeding on the roof
I hope that you don't end up regretting putting eterna bond over everything. Unlike there advertising it's really not forever and the problem with is once it starts to lift it creates channels underneath for water to pool and it can be very hard to tell that it's leaking until it's been doing so for a while.
Also I'm pretty sure your leak was at the vent not the gutter. It's unlikely that water would go underneath the gutter around under the roof membrane then back up into the wood. It's much more likely that it was just dripping in from the vent and then down the wood
You spot on. I ended up resealing my entire roof because I found another leak. Here my newest video on the roof.
th-cam.com/video/JeJHDXFl4kQ/w-d-xo.html
I just discovered a tear and leak by a similar vent on my Imagine. As noted by you, Angelo, the roof "gives" when pushed. I'm going to follow your handy instructions. Any thoughts about using Zip board?
Hey. Thanks for watching. I would definitely use zip board. Also using the correct glue not the one I used. I think there’s a link on this page. Good luck.
It’s nothing less than amazing that not only do these types of serious issues come up on such a new coach, but the fact that there’s only a 1 year warranty on most of them is downright appalling, given the cost of them! I just started a new career in the RV tech industry(mistake #1😅)and I’m already horrified at the poor build quality and building practices in this industry. I got into it so I’d know more how they work because I just bought an older one. I don’t think I could ever buy a new one, even if money was no object, I’d rather have an older one for much cheaper that all the issues have been identified and dealt with.
Great video! Im Tunkhannock of using flex seal on my leaky roof but i have to shovel in the winter. Do you think I will be able to stay on the roof with frozen snow or is this finish going to be too slippery.
Great job!!!
Wow, I have a bunch of those 1" stress cracks (slices) right at the same edge spot where the plywood edge of roof ends under the TPO at the 90 degree down angle, almost like the edge of the plywood sliced up through the TPO from below. What works best to fix this before water sneaks in as you described?
Eternal bond everything you can. All seems everything to prevent this from happening. amzn.to/3Jswuza
How far apart are the roof rafters? Thanks in advance.
What do you use for caulk on the roof? Around the vents
Here ya go. This is what I used amzn.to/4b7hQZk
@@TSquadRVing does it work good? How has it held up?
How has the tape held up?
Great vid........
Look how they build these 150,000 mansions....😮
What size plywood did you use I need to do my roof almost the same spot as you did
I believe 7/16.
Did you use pressure treated plywood or normal plywood? I'm thinking about using severe weather just to give the wood some extra protection.
Regular plywood. I would definitely use the severe. Thanks for watching.
@@TSquadRVing you used OSB not plywood. ACX or BCX exterior grade plywood will hold up better than OSB.
what was the cleaner you used? I think you said not acetone
Do they make a regular glue for that membrane, if so, why not get a quart and brush or roll it on first, then put the roof back on? I know it’s a hassle but the ultimate fix would be remove the awning/gutter, do all the repairs, put the tape on, the put everything back. I guess as another layer of protection you could do the tape afterwards? The main thing is, if it doesn’t leak, excellent!
Use the glue in the description. Also I did tape it after. It worked great. I ended up finding another leak in another spot so I decided to do the entire roof. Here’s a link for the glue.
amzn.to/3Mcm9HZ
Thanks for watching.
I just repair the plywood, the rubber membrane has way too much silicone, not sure I can tape it around. Which material would you recommend to use for new membrane? Is a 4x4 area. Very small, rest of the roof is solid
amzn.to/3Mcm9HZ
Nice job. Now I’m ready! Didn’t think it was possible
What kind of type did you use
amzn.to/49zwVCm
always use EternaBond Tape. Thank you for watching.
Hello , can the same patch method be used for epdm roofing?
Is PVC or duralas roof
It looks like the water was coming from around the vent and running down towards the gutter and trapped under the roof material that's a radius roof if it was coming from the gutter area that means it would have ran uphill and water doesn't run up hill it just pooled there by the gutter causing the damage starting there and making it's way up in the wood hope everything works out for you
100% Agree. Thank you so much for watching.
How far are the studs apart center to enter.
Thank you
I have a 2018 Jayco White Hawk and the roof menbrain is lifting at spots, no leaks yet what can I do?
Lifting like that is where it all begins. Watch this video. But at approximately eleven minutes in of this attached video Eric explains lifting of the membrane
th-cam.com/video/JeJHDXFl4kQ/w-d-xo.html
I found almost the same damage from my a/c unit. I wish mine was as easy as yours. I have to remove my a/c units to replace the plywood. Lol want to come and help?
Are you close to Charlotte?
How is the repair holding up?
Holding up good. Thanks for watching
Hows it holding up over a year later?
Hey. thanks for watching. It’s holding up excellent. A piece of mind I don’t have to worry anymore on roof leaks. Also I will
Say in the summer I noticed it does not get as hot in the RV like it used to prior to doing the roof. Thanks again. Anymore questions feel free to ask anytime.
Have severe water damage in motor home.
How does one go about repairing it.
It seems obvious and maybe not worth it..but thought I would ask
Well depending on a few factors. How extensive is the damage? Has it gone through the roof to the inside, is there mold, You have not said how old the motor home is but is the damages more costly then the motor home is worth?
If you would like to send me some pics I can kinda point you in the right direction. tsquadrving@gmail.com
I would cut the insulation straight with plywood &, install new insulation
Why wouldn’t you replace the insulation that had the water in it? I’m just wondering
Hey thanks for watching. So the insulation was not wet and was in pretty good shape. Thanks again.
Does anyone know how to recrimp a section of a camper roof, aluminum. Help
Think that leak was getting under the roof at that fixture not the gutter.
As long as you have full coverage insurance insurance will cover the damage and what he should have did was just called the insurance company and say hey look I got a bad spot and then it would have gotten professionally fixed probably a whole entire new roof
Thanks for this information. Yes. We had full coverage insurance. And no they do not cover leaks.
@@TSquadRVing well that's not good I had a leak in my trailer and I have State farm and they covered it but I guess not all insurance companies do great video

What type of tape did you use ? We have a tear in our Rv .
amzn.to/3SsREkm
Wouldn’t that be a deal breaker when you go to sell it ? Red flags to an inspector?
An astute inspector will note and determine the soundness of any repair. Not necessarily a red flag though. Anyone buying a used RV can expect repairs to have been made, comes with the territory.
Dealers are backed up for factory defects.
