City of Gods (Mock-Up)

Performed by the Edinburgh Composers‘ Orchestra during their Winter Concert on Dec 7, 2023. Due to a technical issue during the concert, I can unfortunately only present the mock-up.
Programme Note:
Originally written for piano and Flügelhorn solo, the piece harkens back to lockdown times, when distancing rules made orchestral rehearsals impossible and plans were made (and eventually abandoned) to have smaller compositions recorded remotely. Now presented in a new arrangement, City of Gods uses the Composers’ Orchestra’s full instrumental strength to reminisce about relicts of a time that never was. Its harmonic minor mode evokes the sadness of a beauty that has long been forgotten, or was maybe never known. Its faint bells toll under a pale sunset, while a grave chant rises over the silence of the ruins, once taller than the sky, now covered in moss and sand, only a glimpse of their former glory remaining.
