    M1 The Flower
    LINER NOTES
The piece opens with a rising string motif, hinting at the I-iv progressions pervading the entire score before resolving to a faint Violin pedal, a brief addition requested by the director to underscore our opening look at the fallen flower. It is followed by five strikes of the Harp, impatiently measuring the wait for Nancy’s arrival. An earthy repetition of the opening string figure accompanies her as she picks up the flower, followed by the introduction of the score’s first major leitmotif. The bittersweet I-iv alternation of the Truth Theme outlines the characters’ struggle to come to terms with their new reality. Nancy has not yet accepted the truth of what has happened to her, and its first rendition in Cor Anglais, Flute, Celeste, and later Clarinet is broken and incomplete. As she begins to count off the flower’s petals, it gently fades into the rising threes of the Searching Theme, sounding out its full striding form as she walks off. It is only once Mark arrives that the construct falls apart. His reaction to the circumstances is off key, and so are the string pizzicatos that underscore his introduction. A comical stab at his mismatched socks finally introduces the instrument associated with his character throughout the score: the Nylon Guitar.
    ALTERNATES
In the film version of this cue, the introductory statement of the Truth Theme is in Harp and Celeste rather than Flute and Cor.
