LINER NOTES
As Mark drops his nonchalant façade and apologizes to Nancy, a dark progression rises in the strings. Concerting Guitar and Celeste figures underscore their conversation, before a lone statement of the Searching Theme in Violins and Cor Anglais challenges Mark to recount his story. As he admits the reality of his funeral gone wrong, we hear the first full rendition of the Truth Theme, in Guitar. A pounding Harp takes over just as he gets up and leaves, but it is not long until Nancy follows in an attempt to console him. Here, we meet the score’s third and final leitmotif, the Reconciliation Theme, in Guitar, Strings, and Clarinets. Peaceful but somewhat restless figures in Flutes and Celeste try to invade its every gap, briefly quoting the Truth Theme as Mark suggests Nancy should leave soon for her own funeral. As she explains that she must first finish the sonnet, Woodwinds and Celeste play a contrapunctual rendition the Searching Theme, like Nancy ending on an uncertain, unresolved note.
